Wow, I scored! I have been looking for the trifecta of light weight hoodies for ages. Hood, zippered pockets and full zip. If you don't think that it's difficult to find all 3 in one garment plus an excellent form fitting look, please advise. Lucky me, After combing every other outdoor store at Northstar, I found 2 here and they were both 40% off. One was a pale, minty green Cotopaxi with a fiber filled quilted front. I also had the luck of finding a pair of ON cloud tec, multi colored running shoes in my size at half price. The bonus on these was a rubberized, outer finish for rainy weather. Be sure to peruse the entire men's and women's clothing selection. You will find creative, designer sportswear that you don't see everywhere. Toby, Scottie and Erika are fantastic - they took such great care of us! This was our very first time in Tahoe with our kids and friends (who are avid skiers) and our friends were impressed by the quality of the rental gear. During the COVID era, the most usual practices can be grueling, unpleasant and somewhat tedious. Getting fitting out for rentals is tedious in any case (with 6 year old in tow).. but it's the bright faces of the crew and their efficient work that truly make all the difference. In and out.. as quickly as we could possibly be! Super happy with the equipment, guidance and help. When we were nearly late to our ski lesson, they helped out tremendously. When I wasn't sure about fit of the boot, they had all the info. When we wanted a harness for our 6 year old (he was FLYING at a speed we weren't comfortable), Toby and Erika were there to help. Village Shoutout - True North: Margeen (female) (sorry if misspelling) & Taylor (male). I was referred to this location to buy new boots for my new skis which I picked up as demos from The Ritz-Carlton Northstar demo location. TrueNorth staff helped me get the correct fitting boot by measuring my feet & removing the insoles to verify the boots would fit correctly. They even brought me multiple pairs to try on and didn't push me toward the more expensive boots - they let me choose but provided guidance and feedback based on what I felt. Also, wow... bringing multiple pairs? Thank you. The trying on of ski boots is no joke and the removal is the same. Thank you for allowing me to try many! It was a relief to be in good hands with people who are so knowledgeable about very expensive products! Skiing is not a cheap sport and purchasing is an investment so I was adamant I wanted to get the right stuff for me and I did, thanks to all those named above. It's not only not a cheap sport but it's so important for your health/safety to have the right gear - proper fitting is paramount. I also was steered right with poles, the ones spec'd are not just aesthetically pleasing but also functional. They have quick release handles for the wrist strap that has two quick release methods & is much easier to take off for the lift - not to mention safer. They also adjusted my ski bindings (perfectly, might I add) to fit my new boots & heated up my boots for me when I came to pick up so I left toasty warm! Yay! I got a gigantic, on wheels dakine ski bag to bring my loot home & secured myself a helmet. Wow, that helmet was expensive but it does feature air vents that are closable & removable ear warmers. When I weighed out the cost of my health insurance copay vs. the cost of the helmet, (god forbid I hit my head without a helmet!), it was straight up a no brainer (no pun intended). Would return here for sure. Their equipment is top of the line, as is the pricing. But with such an aggressive sport, you have to get the best! Side note: they price match! Win! Cheers you guys! I had a most depressing and terrible experience at this place trying to get my kids skis through junior swap for one day on the mountain last Tuesday. When I called the evening of Monday the 20th I spoke with a nice woman who said that if I showed up at 8am the next day, they would help me. Not the case. We showed up early the next day, waiting 20 minutes in the cold before they opened at 8am. When we walked the guy said they probably couldn't help us because of understaffing, followed up with "it's going to take a while." What followed was two hours of the worst experience I have ever had in any type of store. The guy would help us for a bit, then disappear for 20 minutes, then help us a little more, then disappear again, all the while making us feel like we were some sort of intrusion on his time. At one point I begged him for a screwdriver so I could adjust my kids' skis myself. Any new customer walking in got first attention over us. It's maddening to feel like you have to beg for someone's attention, but that's what it felt like. I ended up dropping close to $400 in the store for the ski swap program when we finally got skis. I didn't even bother getting skis for my little guy because I didn't want to spend another two hours. He just used the skis from my older guy, which I had to adjust myself. I was completely frustrated and demoralized by the whole experience, which was compounded when I couldn't get my own boots on. I went to another place, but the line was out the door. I just wanted to get one day on the mountain with my kids, and it was already half over. I went back to the store and sat there trying to get my boots on. The same guy as before walked by my several times without acknowledging. I finally said "hi I was here for two hours with my kids and I just spent a lot of money here, can you help me with my boots." He took my boots to the warmer and helped me, which I appreciate. Meanwhile, this German woman next to me lost her mind on me because I was taking time from her day. I couldn't win. I will not be going back to Northstar. I would suggest you arrange for the guys in this store to have some sort of "soft skills" training to give your customers a better experience. I am a patient person. This guy had zero empathy and communication skills. I get it when you're understaffed. I work in a bar that is frequently short staffed. But what helps is bringing people along, giving an update, saying "I really appreciate your patience because it's crazy, and we will get to you." There are some small things your people can do to help people feel better about the long wait. There was none of that. True North is a True Disaster for customer service. Don't waste your time. read more

True North helped setup my wife and brother up for a few days of skiing/boarding when we were staying at the hotel. Obviously, the convenience was the main reason we chose to go through them--and it's typically a mixed bag for service for an on-site resort rental--but they were extremely helpful throughout the stay, covid-safe at all times, and quickly assisted with a swap out for a boot replacement that was a wee bit large that allowed us to be in and out and back on the mountain in no time. I even had an issue with a strap on my snowboard binding for my board (an owned non-rental) that busted out of the seam near the end of the 2nd day. They helped me out and hooked me up with a spare Burton replacement strap that saved me some $ for not needing to buy a full strap set, spared me of a trip into town when an après cocktail sounded much better, and was a fix that kept the binding going through the rest of the trip (and that will likely hold up for the 2-3 trips I'll have next season too). When we arrived the ski guy said he was going on break so it would be at least 45 mins. I mentioned that we were told to come on in and he just shrugged and said, "Sorry". I understand that they may be short staffed but would hope a retailer in a resort like North Star would be more accommodating. Bummed. read more

We drove up to Tahoe to begin our weekend ski trip. We were scheduled at Any Mountain for a ski swap upgrade for our daughter. We show up and they were unexpectedly closed (likely due to COVID). Their VM said that we need to go to Northstar or Heavenly. We got to to Northstar Sport 30 minutes before they closed knowing we might not be able to get our skis in time to hit the mountain in the morning. Ben!!! The SAVIOR!! In less than 10 minutes, he refit my daughter's boots, and adjusted her skis to her new boots. THIS IS UNHEARD OF!!! AMAZIN SERVICE, I could not believe it. Thank you Ben for saving our weekend trip from becoming a disaster. read more

My wife and I dropped in here so I could try on some Sorel boots. I did not wind up buying them here because their prices were higher than the Sorel site (Sorel was having a holiday sale). The staff was super helpful though and explained a bit about Sorel's and why they would make a good choice for me. While I shopped, my wife went and looked at the apparel for women. She fell in love with a purse/ handbag with a vintage vibe ski / gondola print on it. It even had a leather patch on the backlights that said Northstar. That was it. She was in love. $80 for a canvas purse was a bit steep but the design and Northstar branding made it a great early Valentine's Day gift. If you need something in a pinch, they have a great selection, but you will pay for the convenience of buying right there on the mountain. In the past I've come in for google cleaner and other smaller items and found the prices to be quite reasonable however. I would stick to the smaller or unique items and avoid anything you can get elsewhere. read more

We came here as a favor to our friends who were snowed in a couple days ago and couldn't pick up their equipment before leaving Tahoe. We came to pick up their equipment around 4:50pm, the shop closed at 5. We were greeted by a tall man who shouted "we're closed" at our faces without asking what we were there to do. He aggressively told my husband to put his mask on, then we were able to explain why we were there and he frustratingly sighed, and said "I don't even know what you're talking about but fine get in" The shop workers helped us kindly and calmly find our friends gear within 2 minutes. We were out of the shop and back in our car before 5pm. I understand the storm, holidays, and COVID makes everyone feel pressure and tense, but I have never been treated so aggressively. He made me sick to my stomach and nearly want to cry. I wish everyone could have more compassion and empathy, patience. We are both very kind and understanding people, my husband worked in customer service and sales at mammoth, and Ive been a caregiver for 10 years. No one deserves to be treated that way. This is a great place to shop for clothes and gear for your stay in the area. Everything is pricey but it was cool to look through the store and see what was in style in the "fashion snow gear" scene. I love the jackets and the shoes. All high end brand names. We ended up using them for the following: -Ski socks! Cool designs and 100% wool. -Chapstick, can't have too many on ski trips! -Neck warmer for husband and daughter. Ben Redfield is a magician! I have been skiing for ten years and went through more skiing boots than I liked and have never found a pair of boots that didn't give me pains. Unlike some other shops, he didn't try to sell me another pair of skiing boots and gave me the most professional, honest advice and worked his magic and fixed my boots. He noticed my metatarsal bones are protruding and molded the inner lining and exterior according to the shapes of my feet with such precision and detail, I was skiing seven hours straight with one break. What a terrible experience at the store. Came in this morning with 3 kids hoping to exchange skies aa we subscribed to "junior exchange program". There's a very irritated old guy named Mac working the who refused us a service. My 7 years old accidentally dropped one ski and got mad right away. After that he discovered some sand in one of ski boots to exchanged. He claimed it was a rat droppings. But it wasn't. It was just a sand. We stored the boots in enclosed plastic box in a garage and no way rats could possibly have any access to it. I explained it to Mac, but he extremely rude and unwelcoming. Later he agreed it wasn't droppings, but still rejected the service demanding us to leave the store. He claimed he had been doing thus for 30 years and knows what he does. Well, Mac maybe you should consider retiring as you definitely hate your job by now. read more

Updating my review of True North in 2017, 3 years later! Anyway, some of the folks have changed, but they are just as good, if not better. Again, this time we bought some gears (poles, neck gaiter, ski boots). For the poles and other accessories, they have good selections, poles of different sizes, nice prices, carbon ones, etc. They have amazing selections of gloves, helmets, goggles, and many more. On ski boots specifically, I had Ben helping me, and he is just amazing!! He is a great skier himself (he was a ski instructor for a long time at Squaw), and understand not just boot fitting, but what boots make sense for which type of skiers, and how to make the boots fit them like gloves. Also, Ben (and other folks at the store like Frank the manager and Nemo) are first and foremost about helping customers, and never offer/push anything that may not help their customers. In fact, Ben talked me out of custom footbed because he thought my cheaper footbed is good enough. All in all, not only is True North so convenient for skiers/riders visiting Northstar, it is a store with great people, selection, and prices that I'd visit even if I were not skiing here. read more

Worst customer service ever! If I could give it a 0 star, I would. My parents and I went into the store and wanted to buy a couple of jackets. We ended up finding some that were on sale. When we tried to check out, one of them rang lower than the other. When asked, the "manager" Lorrie B. told us she would charge both for the higher price. When we tried to reason with her, she refused to listen and told us to get out of "her" store. When asked why she was treating us that way, if it was because we were Asian, because she treated the white couple before us with all smiles and had no patience or fairness when it came to us. She called security on us simply because I asked the question. Do NOT shop there!! read more

A one stop shop for gear, clothing, eyewear, footwear and lifestyle clothing associated with winter sports. I think it's the sister retail place to North Face (they're interconnected). You can get anything from skis, to helmets, to sunblock all in the same place in a semi upscale environment. I'm guessing they're surrounding the "technical gear" niche North Face has so that you can be completely decked out from head to toe whether you're active or just lounging. read more

I came in with ski boots that I'd been fitted for at REI and was close to tears because my foot was in so much pain. Tricia was amazing. She spent several *hours* with me helping me find the best possible ski boot for my foot. After trying on what seemed like half the store, we finally found one that was comfortable. Even better than just helping me find boots, Tricia is super knowledgeable. She spent a lot of time explaining to me why the boot should fit in certain places and helped me (a pretty newbie skiier) understand exactly what I should be looking for in a boot. Have to say every time I go into this store the staff is awesome. Customer service is perfect, knowledge of the goods is impeccable in both skis and clothing. I was looking for something unique and the sales person offered to call other stores, seek out other options for me and that was so nice. I appreciated she offered to go beyond call of duty. I walked in with ski boots sold to me by another Vail Resorts affiliated sport store. My boots were painful every day I used them and I hoped True North could help modify them. Instead boot fitters Jacob & Tricia saw right away that the boot was totally wrong for me and my custom foot beds were wrongly made. They insisted on making new foot beds. Then they got me into a much better boot and customized the shell right away. Jacob then credited me for my old boots under the performance guarantee and I actually got store credit to use on anything else. I was shocked by the service and convenience. I've never seen anything like it. My new boots fit better on the first day in them than any boot I've ever worn. I'm truly impressed. I had SO many questions about boots because I've only had trouble with them and they took time to fully answer everything. So much patience for a customer who lives over 100 miles away. I plan to only trust them with boot purchases and fitting for my whole family. read more

Their ski rental service was top notch. A wide selection of high performance skis even early in the season (i.e. not much snow yet!) The K2 Marksman carve beautifully at high speed and grip the snow beautifully. The Nordica Enforcers were a Zen magical carpet ride. Incredibly responsive. read more

Tricia, Ben (the manager), and Phil have always been a great resource at the Village at Northstar. We actually wanted to get some clothing at the other True North (up at the Ritz) and Phil personally took us up the gondola and helped with the sale at the other shop--totally above and beyond. They have a great selection for a village ski shop, and always seem to have what we need. Also, their boot fitting services are always working to get better and better, and I have had a positive experience there with a family member (having a boot fit done by tricia) where she's now skiing better (and more comfortable!) than ever before. Highly recommend this shop, and when I'm at Northstar, it's a go to! Five stars--and two thumbs up! read more

Terrible customer service. I needed new ski boots and have bought many from here, skied down and asked to be fitted for boots but they wouldn't do it because "they close in 20 minutes." That's funny because it was 4:40 and their hours online said closing was at 6. I've been in pain all day from my boots and planned to come down here for boots but if they won't help a customer willing to pay hundreds of dollars for new boots, i'll just go somewhere else. Squaw's boot shops are better anyways! I highly recommend Squaw Valley instead! read more

After our conversation I'm certain the new team will exceed expectations. In addition to new talent, I was able to take care of my broken poles with no further issue, which is already above and beyond what was required. Thanks!! ****** PREVIOUSLY This was a year of treating myself to some new gear. I've been hitting Northstar pretty regularly so I figured I'd check out True North for some new skis. After a day out on the slopes, I came into the shop and started browsing skis. I picked a few up and after a while, started to look around for an employee. I saw 2-3 people roaming the floor so I figured they would eventually make their way over, or I'd succeed in making eye contact that might indicate I was looking for some help. While employees walked around me (as in, within 5 feet), none of them looked to me nor asked if I needed help. At one point, I said "pardon me" aloud, but only to a back that walked away. Alas, no one came. Meanwhile, there was a mother and a daughter up on the chairs behind me meant for trying on new ski boots. They were also looking around for someone to help as well. I heard the mother mention, "we'll give it another minute, then we'll go." (I originally assumed they were waiting for someone to bring them out boots.) After at least 10 minutes of without being greeted, part of which I spent flabbergasted at the view of passing yet aloof staff, I put back the skis I had set out and walked over to the cash registers, which were manned by two associates and no customers to ring up. Line of sight from the skis? It's maybe 20 feet. "Hi, I'm over by the skis and wondering if I can get some help. Is that possible - do I need to make an appointment?" "No, you don't, but the person who helps with skis isn't here. They leave around 5." I asked for a few more details, like when they'd arrive in the morning, but that kind of made my mind up. Time to look somewhere else. I ended up going to True North down in Tahoe City, where I had an awesome experience that very night, and got a great set of skis and bindings. Moreover, Any Mountain's prices were $100 less than at True North. $995 well spent :) PS: take a look at my review of Any Mountain, Tahoe City. The only thing I couldn't get at Any Mountain were the 48" Leki Carbon 14s ski poles I wanted. They had 46," but not 48". True North and Any Mountain are all owned by Vail, so stock cross-checking said True North had them. I picked them up there the following week (23 January 2017). $166 after tax and less than three days out on the mountain later, however, one of the carbon poles sheared off after planting it for an aggressive pivot. While it's not True North's fault that the pole broke, when I went in to get advice on what to do, the manager confirmed that that is what I can expect of the Carbon 14s poles, and that he could sell me another pair if I wanted. I might have hoped that being less than a week into my purchase they might swap out the pole and duke it out with the manufacturer, but no dice. I broke out my phone and started to look at the Leki website where I found warranty information that seems to say I can get an RMA for replacement. After some prodding, the manager mentioned that I could seek warranty repair, but unfortunately they couldn't do anything. It was a brief and sparse interaction, which kind of sums up the customer service I had received the first time I came in. Kick me once, shame on you, kick me twice... I'm sure you can buy great products here, but I'm not sure you're going to enjoy that journey, nor any follow up that might result. If you're looking for a transaction: be careful. If you're looking for a relationship: it's them, not you; they're just not ready to see new people. read more

True North does it again. I replace my skis every 2-3 years and so it was time to do it again this year. I knew exactly what K2 skis I wanted for me and my wife. True North did not have the skis in stock but they were able find them within their network of ski shops. They price matched the internet competitors and shipped the skis to their Northstar location. I brought in our boots ( my wife bought new boots from True North that she absolutely loves) and they had the skis adjusted and ready to ski the next day. Selection, price, and excellent customer service all at the base of the ski hill make True North the best choice for new ski gear. read more

We came here upon the suggestion of the Burton store after our son tore his ski pants. We were greeted by the professional and friendly Lorrie. Very grateful we were able to find ski pants at the last minute and our son was satisfied with the fit and style of his Spyder pants....price point not on point but Lorrie lessened the burden by giving us a discount. I look forward to shopping at this store every time I visit Northstar, both in the winter and summer. Today however the customer service was terrible. I purchased a few items including a warm pair of $90 sweats for my husband since he forgot his and only had ski clothes and shorts to wear. My husband didn't care for the color so I brought him back with me approximately 25 minutes later at 4:55pm to select a different color and a sign on the door said closed however there were still people in the store and the website said they closed at 6pm. Nevertheless as a customer walked out I entered and ask an older scruffy looking salesman if I could just select a different color. He very rudely said, we are "clooosed" and will reopen tomorrow at 8am. I explained that I just needed a different color and he again said we are "clooosed." I am so disappointed and to think that I now need to drive 45 minutes back to Northstar tomorrow just to exchange these sweats when we have plans to be at Alpine tomorrow and then drive home. They have lost a returning customer and they will see me tomorrow when I return my ENTIRE purchase. read more

Service was okay. It took about 20 minutes before someone noticed me. Keep in mind I was 1 of 3 people in the store!! Decent prices on the hard goods, but the soft goods weren't up my alley in price. 2 stars for the helpful soft goods personel, 0 stars for the hard goods guys. They were rude, unattentive, and didn't have a straight answer for anything I asked. (i.e. "how does this ski handle in the crud?" "well, just like the rest I suppose.") Go somewhere else for your hard goods. read more

I used to shop at Helly Hansen everytime we stay at Northstar Resort but they are no longer in the village (I'm disappointed) I thought I'd never find ski pants, I found a pair at True North, "spyder" I should've bought the matching sweater in magenta color, sigh. In my opinion, this is the best play to buy any type of ski gear if you are picky. They are quite good at fitting you with shoes, skis, and clothing. They also don't push you to buy their inventory if they don't have the right product for you. Most ski shops very near the ski lifts tend to be expensive. But this place is reasonable. They are very friendly and helpful. I had a very positive experience with them buying boots that fit just right. They also sent me to the right place for equipment for my kids. read more
