Industrial. Like, the most industrial aesthetic to ever exist. This place is a relatively newly remodeled hotel and their online marketing checks all the boxes. Its clean and minimalist vibes are satisfactory; but the actual experience is nothing shy of warehouse chic. Cement floors, minimal furniture, zero countertop space, small and cot-like beds. This is a far cry from cozy luxury. I found the aesthetic to be brash and think it could be balanced by some plush linens and other more comfortable details. This place is absolutely disgusting. It smells, looks, and feels like you're staying in a prison cell. My room wasn't clean at all when I walked in, the bed wasn't even made. My room smelled like cat piss, mold, and cigarettes. My coworkers room had cigarette buds everywhere, another had mold everywhere, another had dirty sheets and an imprint of where someone had laid on her bed. The place just felt dirty as soon as you walked in. The only reason I was staying here is because a tour I was on put us here. As soon as I walked in my room I took a video and walked out. I just couldn't do it. Every girl that was on tour with me walked out and slept in the parking lot on our tour bus instead. I don't enjoy writing reviews like this, but after multiple attempts to resolve this privately, I have no other option. I booked the Trumbull & Porter for a work retreat, reserving the hotel's premium suites because the property and amenities fit the experience I was creating for my team. Instead, it became a liability. The majority of the amenities that influenced our booking decision were unavailable during our stay. The rooms were also not clean. We found debris and even hair in one of the beds. For a boutique hotel charging premium rates, that is simply unacceptable. The most frustrating part, however, wasn't the condition of the property. It was the complete lack of accountability afterward. I wrote directly to the General Manager. My team member, who was also staying at the hotel, wrote separately. When neither of us received a response, I sent a second follow-up. Nothing. No acknowledgment. No apology. No explanation. No attempt to make things right. As someone who runs events, I understand that problems happen. Hotels occasionally have maintenance issues or staffing shortages. What separates a great hotel from a mediocre one is how leadership responds. In this case, they didn't. This stay turned what should have been a profitable relationship with a returning customer into a cost center for my business. Instead of focusing on my team, I was dealing with issues that should never have existed in the first place. This is not a hotel. This is a dumpy motel. It's also inaccurately advertised on HotelTonight. Wish I would have looked here or at other reviews. HT says "room approximately 350sqft" which is why I booked it. The room was extremely small. At most 150sqft. The concrete floors and clear bulbs with bright white LED lights made me feel like I was in a jail cell. Not comfortable at all. Tiny bed. Only one body towel provided when the room is supposed to be for 2 people. Mold in shower. Shower fan is deafeningly loud. And paper thin walls. I paid over $400 for a king superior room. For that price you would assume it's a nice room, considering my king deluxe at the Godfrey was cheaper than that. The entrance looked nice, I get to the room expecting it to be newly renovated, they said as much. It was like a motel 6 with a new sink and fresh paint. Outrageously over priced, the polar opposite of luxury. To the point that we didn't even stay because we were not comfortable in there at all. This place is trash its the most basic you can get don't even have a whole shower door on top of that concrete floor with paper thin rug and 1ply ya 1 PLY toilet paper WTF. TLDR: Dirty sheets, thin walls, locked doors to the stairway, do not waste your money! I really wish I would've read the reviews of this place before I came here. This place was terrible. We checked in late (around 11pm) and three groups walked in with us. The woman at the desk did a great job of simultaneous getting us all checked in. We took the elevator to the room and the elevator was sketchy. The doors were closing slowly and stopped for a long period before opening. (This happened multiple times during our stay). The walls had some art on them but I noticed they were all by the same person. Not a big deal but I thought a boutique hotel would have a bit of variety. Also the halls were dark. The little lamps didn't do much. You could still see but it was by no means bright. When we finally got to the room, I was a bit disappointed by how small it was and to see the bed wasn't made. We were only staying the weekend so I didn't stress about this too much and decided to make the bed. When I get to the comforter, it's filled with stains. It looked like it hadn't been washed. I quickly call the front desk and the same lady was like "ok we'll bring another one". They brought it, I move on. We're finally ready for bed. The tv was nice because it had multiple channels and a guide so we could watch whatever was on cable (no Netflix or other streaming apps were choices btw). It was about 1am when we heard music BLASTING, like it was so loud we could hear the words clearly. I was taking aback by this but too annoyed at this point to call the front desk. The music played for about 10 minutes and thought we would get some peace. NOPE! Not even 5 minutes later we could clearly hear our neighbors having sex. It wasn't like yelling, more of the moans and grunts. It was terrible. I knew in this moment, I'd never come back to this hotel. Hell, I wanted my money back but when we talked to the front desk they informed us that any cancellations would have to go through booking.com. Our stay consisted of more of this. We heard a different couple arguing multiple times throughout the day. The absolute worst and most concerning thing was that the doors to the stairs were locked! We tried to take the stairs 3 different times (at different doors) and the doors were locked. We only found 1 door that wasn't lock. I'm not well aware of fire laws but I am sure THIS IS A FIRE HAZARD. All in all, I won't be back. I'll probably post this on google reviews as well because people shouldn't waste their money and somebody needs to check those doors. The system is set at very moderate 68 degrees, lowest fan setting. No assistance from the hotel: called the front desk and the general manager for advice or a change of room, but no answer. From the start the pictures do not fit the description. We get to the hotel check in drop our things and leave for the day to go off and have fun. We get back to the hotel into our room I pull off the comforter layer of that's what you want to call it. My daughter says there is blood, I look and there is dried blood on the comforter. I look around since I'm getting ready for bed and the hotel is dirty and for what it costs is a complete rip off. I pack us up go down to the front desk, I tell the girl that we have blood etc she says let me talk to my manger I told her I wanted a refund. She goes in the back pretends like she talks to a manager and comes out and says as soon as hotels.com calls we will refund the money. Little did "brennie" "Brittany" who knows her name she lies so I don't know if she is making up her name. My husband is taking to hotels.com calls the hotel and brennie says she's the manager and no not to give us a refund. I drive back up there and confront the front desk girl we will call Brennie and say you told me that the money would be refunded, she says no I didnt well she doesn't know we recorded the whole conversations that were had. Then we ask to speak to a manager and she says she's busy then says she left, oh wow YUN comes from nowhere and now she's the manager. Now we have many of patrons staying there hearing this conversation. Brennie is so angry cause we keep asking for a manager she refuses to take care of the other patrons at the desk and lets them proceed to listen about the blood biohazard on our bed. I will add photos, not only blood but the room is gross it's dirty and well not worth the money. The walls were gross and the windowsill was falling off the bed frame was dirty. Nope. Had to stay overnight, and used a third party website to find something decent close to where we were heading for an event last Friday night. Online, it looked like a boutique hotel. the front is certainly cute, they have bikes outside for guests to use. The lobby itself is kind of cute. But for almost $300 including tax, the room itself it just ehhh. They also keep a $250 fee for incidentals. This is not the Ritz people. Wth Let's call it lipstick on a pig. No elevators. Third floor in the back lot. We didn't even feel comfortable parking our car. While it's fenced and gated, the only car in the back when we pulled around had its drivers side window rolled down and a suspicious looking driver smoking a j. I told my bf to park on the other side of the parking lot. We walk up the three floors, the stairwell itself had tile from what you would see an elementary school halfway. Entering the room, it was very small. We had a beautiful look outside of the parking lot. lol No drawers, just a hanging rack with hangers. No coffee machine. Concrete floors with some throws on the ground. Some updates, such as a bath towel holder, but terrible job painting. The bed, fine until you sleep in it. Uncomfortable! Our backs hurt the next morning. Just being in the room felt a bit sketchy. Some faint stains on the bedsheets. I want to know how it the heck have the nerve to charge $300 ish for this mess. read more

After the Marriott near the convention center cancelled my reservation the day before the show and tried to relocate me to the airport (no thank u) I was scrambling for a hotel room in the city. Everything seemed to be fully booked except Trumbull & Porter. I made a reservation from the Marriott lobby, waited too long for a confirmation email that never came, and eventually just drove over to the hotel where, thankfully, they were expecting me. Trumbull & Porter bills itself as (and, literally, bills like) a boutique hotel. The first floor has various amenities including a coffee shop, sundries store, bar, restaurant and even an outdoor patio with a stage where I saw some industry colleagues letting loose one evening. There's ice on the second floor and a fitness room on the third. The interior design is somewhat sparse but modern and clean. Just be prepared for the bare concrete floors (there are rugs) and IKEA-esque furnishings. The hotel is perfectly comfortable for a few nights in Detroit. It did have a few quirks though that added up to the loss of a star. First, the doors were not soundproof at all--which made for one particularly unpleasant night whilst my next door neighbor dry heaved themselves to sleep. Second, I would have appreciated a kettle or coffee maker in the room rather than the microwave. I am a person who runs on tea morning, noon and night, and so I ended up purchasing a souvenir mug downstairs to be able to heat water to brew my tea. Third, I wished there were a few more wall outlets available. And finally, while the fitness center is pretty well appointed, it lacked any sort of disinfecting wipes for cleaning the equipment. Not like, the canister was empty--like, there was no obvious place they could or should have been which frankly is really surprising for a hotel gym post-covid. I brought a Purell wipe with me the second time I went. All told, my stay here was pleasant if unplanned. The location is only a 5-minute Uber ride from the convention center and close to the restaurants and bars downtown. If the Marriott mistreats you, you can do a lot lot worse than Trumbull & Porter. read more

I love this place for so many reasons. They have complimentary bikes all year round. The staff is always so friendly. They have a cute little bar--plenty of secure parking. It is nestled just east of Corktown and less than a mile from Hart plaza in downtown Detroit. They offer complimentary computers in the common area. The bathroom is nice, lol. While looking at the pictures of this boutique hotel known as Trumbull & Porter, the thought of staying at it felt like an adventure that I surely wanted part of my getaway to Detroit for the Detroit Free Press Marathon. I also figured why not because overall I wanted to be closer to downtown Detroit. As for my visit, I noticed that the mask mandates are different in Michigan because I was literally the only one in this hotel wearing a mask! Coming from Illinois where we have mandates it just feels so odd not wearing one in businesses. The exterior has a unique appearance that certainly stands out. As one that considers myself a hipster, this hotel is definitely hipster friendly the way it is designed and what it offers. I really loved the interior of the hallway; the interior had a dim lit appearance with mini lights plastered along the wall. The dim lit appearance coincides well with the hotel's noted message 'welcome to the quiet zone' which gives you that vibe. During my visit I didn't utilize any of the amenities, specifically the fitness center, but I did see it from the hallway as I peeked through the window. I wanted to enter, but an access code was required to enter. I loved the artsy feel of my room; the room had everything you would need for a comfortable night's stay. Before getting comfortable on the bed, I did a thorough check for stains and anything else that would hinder me from getting rest. I found nothing which was a huge relief! And more over being able to toggle with the temperature added extra comfort along with the room's already cleanliness. There was not a carpet covering the entire room; just pieces covering underneath the bed as well as the sink area which I had to get used to. The carpet pieces looked like something straight out of your grandmother's house. So if you choose to stay at the Trumbull I recommend footwear to wear around the room because who knows if the floor is cleaned or not. There were also limited cable channels, but still enough to get me through the night. With it being a college football Saturday I was satisfied with being able to watch the main games. Another thing was the absence of a microwave even though I had no plans on utilizing one during my night's stay. Checking out was a breeze! With my flight being later in the afternoon I utilized every minute I had to pack my things until it was 11:00 AM, the noted check out time. During my night's stay, the staff took care of me. And despite having many other guests dealt with, their kindness will never be forgotten from the time I checked in to the time I checked out. Being that Trumbull & Porter offered everything I looked for I am quite positive that I will return. Other than it being accessible to downtown Detroit, I loved that it is close to Corktown where you'll find good restaurants. Check in was fine, took longer than other places, but the person was friendly enough. Room is sparse, but comfortable. Did run into a couple of issues. The biggest one was that my toilet didn't flush. I called down to the desk - three times - and no one ever picked up. So, I took the lid off the toilet, diagnosed the problem, and fixed it myself. Took about 10 minutes, but was a bit of a pain, and it was super annoying that no one answered the phone at the front desk. We walked to several things from the hotel, so that was nice. We were there in February, and February is not a good look for Detroit. The area around the hotel could use some serious neighborhood cleanup love. I'd stay here again as it was central enough for want we wanted to do. read more

Update: I was originally gonna give this place 4-stars but they charged my card even though I pre-paid my entire stay, checked in and out on time, and left the room in a very clean condition (I even made the bed again!). They didn't even give me an answer as to why when I called :( My first Uber driver, a Detroit native, told me he didn't know this hotel existed. My second Uber driver asked me about my stay, telling me this place used to be a "real sh**hole." Neither of these comments really made me excited to stay here. The area seemed very industrial, and honestly not safe for a single traveler. Once inside, I was greeted by a wonderful woman and a quirky man - both of which were very banterful. My room was on the fourth floor - it was small and quirky. The best way I can think of describing it is Pinterest meets farmer. The room was small, quirky, and filled all the basic needs. The walls were not soundproof at all, I could hear my neighbors watching a movie and could distinguish their entire conversation if I really wanted to. It was unclear where the gym was, and what areas were part of the restaurant. There were no water bottles or water stations near the rooms. My stay was comfortable; I wasn't receiving too much attention and I was able to coordinate everything myself. If you're looking for a more homey environment than your average Marriot, this is a nice place to consider! Note: it's not in a centralized location. read more

My husband and I loved this hotel. The welcome from Jeremy and Bell was super nice and set the tone for us. We went right to the restaurant and I had heard the food was very good, but we just had some drinks before going out. The room is basic with iron,hair dryer, bathrobe, slippers - but was really clean and smelled fresh. The big courtyard they have had some games and a bonfire which was really cool. The vibe is cool and everyone there from the welcoming desk to the restaurant was extremely friendly. We recommend you give it a shot for sure! read more

My God, that mattress. It was slightly less firm than the carpeted concrete floors. I literally ached in the morning. Also, that queen sized bed felt more like a full sized bed, thought I don't carry a measuring tape with me so it's hard to say with certainty. Walls so thin we could hear somebody in an adjacent room peeing. Trendy spaces here and there, but none of them operating. It's a motel folks. The remote was gross and the bathroom was pretty gross looking. 2 stars because the art was pretty cool and the staff was nice. The restaurant and bar was not open and there are homeless camped out I. the park across the street. The area is not the best looking but pro being there is a gated parking lot that was only $10. Music was heard blasting from a room when leaving our room. This place is so overpriced and I was kicking myself for booking there. If you're thinking of booking there, don't do it!! Ok. So, I've read many reviews of this wonderful hotel, which were mostly negative. I'll start by saying the hotel is in severe need of staff; during our four day stay, the same four people were the ENTIRE staff-Brittney, Yun, and two others who I didn't get their names. I personally saw where Yun worked from 5am until 2am, opening the bar at Red Dunn to serve patrons, while checking in/out guests. I asked her about this, because I noticed her length of time working. She noted literally everyone who worked there during my last stay in May are no longer there, and people seem to not want to work. This is to simply say the staff committed to ensuring your stay there is great are doing their absolute best. Red Dunn cannot open because they don't have staff; I guess the bittersweet thing about this is it allows you to checkout the many fantastic places to eat, drink and shop nearby. Checkout Honest John's, Folk, Rivertown Market, and The Gathering Coffee Co., among many. The hotel is a great place and is pretty much my second home when visiting one of America's best cities. Due to a family issue, I needed to find a hotel in Corktown. I just spent 5 days in this hotel. I have never felt more welcomed and treated with such kindness in any hotel. Like many hotels, the Trumbull & Porter had to survive COVID and soon after that, a major water pipe broke on the street broke forcing the hotel to close and regroup. And they have! Like most hotels these days it's understaffed but the staff they have are all kind and considerate and are happy to do whatever is needed. They recently did a soft opening to their restaurant where I tried their corn beef and cabbage for St. Patrick's Day and it was wonderful. One of the more unique hotels that I've ever stayed at, and certainly my first Ascend hotel. In describing it, I have to say that it is an urban contemporary-style blend of hotel design. Located in a section of the city called Corktown, Trumball & Porter also has a pretty decent bar & restaurant, as well as gated parking within the side & rear entry of the building. The latter of which was extremely appreciated & highly important for a first-time visitor to Detroit that did not know the area well. Now, back to the hotel design scheme again. While comfortable, its just very different. I can probably compare it to an A Loft hotel, but that's a slight stretch. No carpeting within the rooms due to the urban contemporary scheme, exterior closets & tubs. Just different, yet not bad. In fact, the entire stay was quite comfortable. I really don't have any complaints other than a slightly lower ceiling in the hallways. But then again, I'm just over 6-2 in height. Will certainly return when in Detroit once again! read more

Front desk at check-in was very friendly. The room was much smaller than anticipated for the price but it was clean. It's supposed to be a hipster, modern vibe and for the most part it is. A few things- there is no carpet and it's a cement floor. The "nightstands" are very small, outdoor type tables and it's strange not to have a full door or curtain on the shower. We were happy it was clean and fairly quiet although we could easily hear people talking or walking. A good night's sleep was bad. Note: 1. We called to reserve and room and after checking Price Hopper they had a better price for the same room. 2. There is a $10 fee if you want to park there. I don't often rent rooms but I have never had this fee separate. 3. This hotel is under construction right now. I appreciate the effort they are making in cleaning up the building and making it into a nice place to stay. read more

The hotel boasts boutique hotel accommodations with high-end rooms, amenities, and products with an on-grounds gourmet kitchen serving brunch and dinner in the restaurant and room-service delivered meals. I was so excited for this experience that, upon checking in but before getting to our room, I asked for an additional night so we could take advantage of all the space has to offer. In hindsight, I really regret it. Not one feature in the hotel was actually high-end. The room we started in had bare concrete floors that had carpet padding chunks and dust sealed onto it that looked gross rather than part of the esthetic. The moldings and trim are flat, painted wood slabs, showing off that the contractors likely don't know how to miter cut and join much less simply align the corners. The standup shower stall had a single pane shower window wall with a small space between the glass and the wall to get in, instead of sliding doors. The whirlpool tub that made the single king bedroom I booked over $500/night was dusty and the tile enclosure had pieces poking up making it not fun nor romantic to use. It's worth mentioning that the website said it was a two-person tub but it's only big enough for one adult. Exposed wiring, popcorn ceilings, and unfinished construction styling added nothing to the value of the space and made my guest and I feel like we got sent to the basement as a punishment rather than to an expensive hotel room. We had to vacate this room due to the A/C unit leaking water onto the floor (that's where the concrete cracks are forming) and made the rug squishy and slimy. I called the front desk and waited on hold for 15 minutes while the desk person (whose first day it was, along with others that we discovered were having their first day on the job too) found someone who could help. I ended up walking all the way up to the desk because they never got back to me. I had to explain to 3 others about the room problem and a manager finally showed up and offered to put us in another room. I was happy, for a fleeting moment, when offered their best room, The Rolling Stones suite, where we slept the first night. The suite has all of the same, terrible quality of fit and finish, including the TP dispenser being screwed directly into the wall with screws sliding out of the drywall right next to the screw anchors. The shower stall window wall in the suite had a cutout on the mounted end and I realized that the contractors took two-piece sliding shower door sets and used one pane per unit and mounted them fixed as a wall instead of spending the money for a full sliding door set for each room. In this suite, the small gap for people to get into and out for showering is right next to the door going out to the bedroom so the bedroom to bathroom door jam is moldy because the shower water directly hits it. There's no towel bar or hooks anywhere near the actual shower so we had to drip all over the bathroom to get to our towels where the hooks are mounted across the room. We couldn't sit on the lip-shaped love seat to watch television in the sitting room because the seat kept tipping forward. My guest said the legs looked bent and broken but I discovered that the front legs were mounted backward. I remember seeing a news interview showing the room in 2019 with the same seating and wonder how long no one has been able to sit comfortably in this suite due to details like this that could be fixed easily. The record player and Rolling Stones records they invited us to use were warped, dirty, and unpleasant to listen to. The staff never even bothered to tell us that the restaurant was closed and there would be no food. We were supposed to have a firepit fire made for us in the courtyard but overheard them say that staff told them to start one themselves. I'm so furious about the experience that I've been crying. I told the manager about the problems, calmly and politely, while I was checking out early because I didn't even want to sleep in the room another night. He listened but made no attempt to do anything else since he had already provided the "best" room they had the night before. I would have been happy with a partial refund (at least for the night I didn't want to stay), other compensation, correction of problems, or even a fully genuine apology. read more

I'm shocked at all the good reviews. We had visible MOLD in our bathroom and they are fighting us on a refund. It even looks like they had painted over it before. If there is mold in one room, you better believe this place is full of it and they are not taking care of it properly. They did a quick flip and did not fix any issues with the building. This hotel is perfect for those who is into arts. The hallway is decorated with Detroit art work. The room is hidden behind the art display. It can be crowded when there is an exhibition. Room is small and very minimalist. There's a microwave and refrigerator. Sink is separated from the bathroom. The shower has permanent glass half way which is annoying for taking shower and and I cannot put my towel near by because there's no railing. Service is great. Staff is very friendly. Gym is very nice. It has two elliptical machine and two treadmills and free weights. There's a bathroom inside the gym. Breakfast is not included. There's a big parking lot. I have been a member of Yelp for years but have never posted a review - but after my experience at Trumbull and Porter, I had to go public. My partner and I checked in to our room, only to find it dirty. There was some type of sauce on the bathtub, there was hair on the bathroom door, and the cement floor was broken and cement chips and grit were strewn across the floor. As we headed out for the night, we asked for the room to be cleaned. When we returned from our night, we found our room had been properly cleaned BUT when we pulled back the sheets, we found that the mattress was covered in BLOOD. It was the grossest experience I have ever had in a hotel in my entire life. It was too late to check out, so they changed our room and we left in the morning. Because my first stay was so enjoyable, my wife and I stayed here when I was up near Detroit this past weekend (Saturday 2/9). As much as I loved the style, accommodations and comfort-ability, my wife loved it even MORE! After we checked in, my wife and I went over to the restaurant, RED DUNN, and immediately were seated. We just wanted a little snack and ordered the Shrimp Jalisco and some italian/mushroom fried balls. Both were really delicious. We both loved and enjoyed our stay and will come back again if we're staying near the Detroit area! . . The hotel and concept was very cute, but there were some issues. We had to get an actual key for our room because the key cards didn't work. Also got stuck outside because one of the back doors didn't work with the key card system. You can also here everything from the rooms in the hallway, which is probably because of the gap between the door and floor that was roughly an inch. And I have never had a hotel put a $250 deposit on your card at check in! Seems a little excessive and unnecessary. To top it off there was no complimentary coffee! $2.50 for a cup of coffee read more
