Interesting concept where it's a sort of tapas-style omakase. It's run by two chefs who enjoy entertaining and they're quite the show themselves. Food wise, it was largely hit or miss with me. They served freshly-baked bread right in the beginning and mine was very dry unfortunately. My partner's was tender and pillowy though, so not sure what happened there. There were some dishes that were off balanced, where it was either weird flavors or over-seasoned. I did have some favorites, particularly their slowly flame-grilled chicken and their corn soufflé. Both take quite a bit of technique and the chefs absolutely nailed them to perfection. Overall I had a fun time and some tasty food but not sure if it's worth a return visit.

Recently I came here for a b-day dinner. Trust is a Chef's table concept restaurant and was ranked #18 in 2023 Yelp's Top 100 Places to Eat in the US. Was the dinner expensive? Yes, but our party paid for an intimate 18-seat culinary theater experience by Chef Kyle McClelland and sommelier poured paired beverages (alcoholic or non-alcoholic upon request) with each course. [Reservation]: Prepaid reservation for parties of 1 to 6 with 3% credit card processing fee via Tock. There's a different theme for each evening from Conservas & Tapas (Spanish flavors), Trust Dinner Party, Trust Lite, Adventures in Seafood, Italian Night, Evening at the Farmer's Market, etc. With reservation, visitors also get an evening pass to DTTN 2.0 (membership lounge right next to the Trust Kitchen) and let concierge know by sending an email (concierge@detentiondtsa.com) prior to 3 PM on the day of dining event. However the lounge still welcomes last-minute walk-in visitors and that was what our party did. [Entrance]: The kitchen entrance is on N Spurgeon St and the door opens exactly at 7 PM. Visitors can just hang out at the DTTN 2.0 lounge in the meantime. *** Ultimate Steak Dinner from 7 PM to 9:30 PM (a celebration of beef featuring several of the world's finest examples and favorite steakhouse sides. $225 per person, food and wine pairings, tax and gratuities included) *** === Rose === *** Bread from 61hundred *** + Airy texture. *** Red & Green baby romaine lettuce, classic dressing, garlic sourdough croutons *** + Light and delicious salad to start the meal. *** Tomato's & Emerald Figs, fried quinoa, ricotta, basil, balsamic *** + Acidic, sweet, and salty = quite an interesting and great tasting flavor profile. *** Steak Tartar , toasted milk bread, parm *** + Lovely toasted Japanese milk bread and melt-in-your-mouth steak tartar. === Barbera === *** Japanese BBQ Korean cut short rib, sweet & sour mixed mushrooms *** + Short rib tasted slightly salty, but mushroom had great seasoning. *** Wanderer Hanger steak, grilled Jimmy Nardello Peppers, chimichurri sauce *** + Juicy steak with a slightly vinegary aftertaste from chimichurri sauce. Good peppers. === Syrah === *** Imperial Flank steak, organic roasted carrots, mandarin yuzu butter *** + Steak cooked to perfection. *** Imperial Outside skirt steak, whole roasted XO cauliflower *** + Another melt-in-your-mouth steak. === Bordeaux === *** Aussie Sher Striploin, Turlock Asparagus, smoked egg yolk aioli *** + Smokey. *** USDA Prime 24 Day Dry Aged Ribeye, Wiser Farm Fingerlings, charred organic onions *** + By this point I was pretty much full. === Vermouth === *** S'mores Cake Binchotan whip*** + While whip cream tasted quite interesting, the cake tasted a bit too sweet for my liking. *** Coriander & Cardamon Brown Butter, Ice cream sandwich *** + Ice cream also tasted a bit too sweet for me. [Conclusion]: The only nitpicking aspect with the dinner was overly sweet desserts, but the main courses were amazing and the service was superb. This is absolutely an amazing & intimate spot to celebrate special occasions and to fire taste buds on all cylinders. P.S. - They have takeout boxes so yes customers can take leftover home (our party only took desserts and small portion of cooked leftover back home).

Chef Jason was hilarious! The way he described his dishes were truly comical, we got a meal and some entertainment. My favorite was the many layers of thin beef... almost like a Lady M crepe cake but using meat! The green salad was also surprisingly enjoyable. And we didn't just get 1 dessert, we were served 2. Overall great experience!

This was a great night. Small chefs table and overall an experience. The price is all inclusive and I'd say if you don't drink it's not as great of a deal at $250/person but I think they will discount the meal if you notify them. You split the tasting with your partner which was interesting but that's how we eat anyway. We will be back to try again as the menu seems to change with what's available. The bar connected is also a great spot.

    1. Each dish was unique, and they were delicious in each of their own way! My favorites are the fresh brioche, Hangar Steak, and the Honey Citrus Cake! That hanger steak was tender! 2. The spot has a nice intimate ambiance! The interior is also cozy yet comfortable! 3. There are only indoor seatings at a counter with a small number of seats available! Reservation is required! 4. The staff were friendly and informative about the content of each dish and wine! They are also good at controlling the flow of the multiple courses! 5. Garage Parking, Meter Parking, and Neighborhood Parking are available! There is a free two hours period for the garage parking on the weekends and nights! Note: There is a restroom available for customers! It just located in the back after passing the last guest's seat! I throughly enjoyed this experience if you want to go all out on an expensive coursed dinner! I loved the more intimate setting where you're sitting right in front of the chefs preparing the dinner. Every dish comes with a wine pairing and I was pleasantly surprised by the wine choices! I really don't usually love wine but all of the wines worked well to each dish & also they weren't wines on the dry side. The first course was an oyster with caviar. I didn't mind the oyster or the caviar but it had different vinegars on it & honestly I do not think it paired with it. It tasted sour in a funky way. I could barely swallow this & I am pretty open with food. Thankfully everything else was really great so it started off rocky & improved from there. After that, they had this bread from a local bakery that was KILLER. I loved the big flakes of salt on it. It was warm & pillowy. There was also a salad with goat cheese & apples! It was refreshing while creamy. I liked it overall. The next course was different beets - I think if someone liked beets they'd really enjoy it but I'm just not a beets girl. My favorite dish was this piece of bread with bacon jam, mussels & shaved Parmesan on it. IT WAS DECADENT AND IT WAS UNFORGETTABLE. Me and my boyfriend still talk about it. The mussels had a slight chew as they should but easy to bite through. The bacon jam was smoky & you couldn't get enough of it. The Parmesan paired so well with this adding a creamy but tangy bit. I liked the scallop dish overall with the flavors but the scallop could've been more tender. The meat dishes were both incredible! I think my favorite meat dish was the veal. It had this creamy tuna sauce under it that worked really well with the tender veal. I will say - I had a bit of a harder time than I would have liked cutting through a ribeye at an establishment this expensive. I also think they could benefit from sharpening the knives so it cuts through easier! After the dessert, there was a freshly baked kouign amann. I mean how'd they know that was my favorite pastry?! They didn't but I love them for serving that. It came out super hot & the ribbons of sugar extending when you pulled out the bread was beautifully artistic. Overall, I'd come back when I want to treat myself!

Review specific to the battledish vegetarian dinner On paper this was a good concept - battledish -3 chefs compete to make 3 cold, hot appetizers, entrees, dessert. But execution and dishes fall below expectations. At the beginning the chef narrated the dishes as he said trying to not give away too much and it felt a bit awkward like they're buying time for the brioche. (Since it's an intimate affair, maybe they could have introduced themselves and gotten to know the crowd, just a thought). There was a score sheet for each person and at the end, they tallied and just stated who won each round, no stakes/special appreciation, no connection to the concept. We went in for a vegetarian dinner. There are 10-12+ dishes but they're shared among the party yet each person pays $200. I've seen the other menus where there is meat and the food feels substantial. IMO, they could either do the vegetarian one at a lower price or consider offering at par in qty. All dishes felt pretty lack luster at the cost - for cold we had a snap pea with yogurt, a radish with some yogurt sauce and finally beets with yogurt....There was a lot of yogurt and just the main ingredient without a theme or even a base carb. The same pattern repeated itself in the other courses. There was no uniqueness or standouts from a dish perspective. It would have probably helped if there were palette cleansers or better distribution of the dishes so it keeps things fresh. Throughout the meal, some of the chefs kept saying or giving away who made what. The entrees and hot appetizers felt identical/repetitive in flavors. The main whites and reds (wines) were not good and the server felt illiberal (felt as though there was an air or distinction abt hosting or having people of color, which as subject I didn't appreciate). It also didn't end on a great light palette cleansing note, the dessets were also too palette saturating and too fatty. The only dish of the night with some weight/ substance (yet too much fat), the baked pastry was also fatty heavy sweet. They could have done more, a lot more with everything. This was my birthday dinner and I didn't feel it was worth the price.

Great dining experience at Trust. Unique take on chef's choice or omakase. Chef Jason was an excellent host and delivered an outstanding culinary experience. Only 18 seats are available so reservations are a must. Each item paired with an accompanied wine made it out to be a great night. Definitely would recommend for any foodie or anyone looking to try something new.

Always a great time when coming here! Tried the ultimate steak dinner recently and it was delicious! So far I've tried Surf & Turf, Trust, and The Ultimate Steak Dinner theme and everything has been great. You can't go wrong with the wine pairing that is included! Love the environment, the service, and the food.

Dined here 3 years ago, and still dreaming of this place. This is one of the coolest restaurants with delicious food that I've been to ever!! It's on the pricier side but well worth the experience. Great for a special events like bday/anniversary celebration etc. Ambiance: very intimate space, need to book early for a specific time slot (can't just walk in); everyone is seated in this round table format with chef in the middle Food: food was incredible!!! Everything the chef made was with such details, he walked through the ingredients of each dish and everything was so unique and paired really well with the wine suggestions; highly recommend coming here!! with each dish, he talked about the inspiration to making each dish, service was incredible

Came here for the first time to celebrate our anniversary. This night they did a fun Battledish set up. 12 courses in 4 categories, each category paired with wine. So fun to watch them cook and create right infront of you. It is a small place with seating for 18. The food was amazing, conversation was fun, and we walked away full and happy! Looking for a special night out, this is worth the money and a great place to celebrate!

Fabulous experience for an upscale dining place. Celebrated my birthday here with my kid and it was just simply delicious and a day to remember. Took me awhile to get a booking and the price per person is not bad all. Since it's a small intimate kitchen counter sitting, plus it is a small place in dtsa district, parking can street parking or parking lot areas. Foods menu change weekly so you don't know til you get there but if you are allergic to something, you can tell them during booking via online. It is something you got to try it one in a life time, especially on a special occasion with that special someone.

My boyfriend took me here for our anniversary and so happy and thankful he did because every dish served that night was delicious (especially the toasted bread with a clams/bacon/tomato sauce on top, which I forgot to take a picture of...couldn't stop talking about it! & the ice cream!). Loved the ambience as well, very relaxed and enjoyed seeing all the chefs working their magic. Will definitely be coming back!

    Ask the Community - Trust

In the Amenities section, it lists outdoor dining...but is outdoor dining still available now that we don't have Covid restrictions? We would be a party of 6, but 2 of us only eat outdoors. Would love to book if this is possible!

No, this was in effect during COVID. It's currently 18 (I think?) chef's table-style spots all indoors.

What if one person does not eat beef?

Definitely avoid our ultimate steam evenings but our other events will be perfectly fine.

Would the Trust Dinner Party experience be recommended for solo/single parties?

I think it would be a great experience for one, but most come in pairs or a group. Depends on your comfort level.

I haven't been here since pre-Covid. Are the plates shared amongst 2 or 3 people now?

We were there recently and it was 2 people. Not sure if they do singles!

    What's the dress code?

    Comfortable/casual

Can anyone tell me the difference of ultimate steak night and trust dinner party ? I tried the ultimate steak night but not the trust dinner party. Thanks!

Think of the Trust dinner party as a chef's table where you eat whatever the chef wants to prepare for that night. Kind of like the side dishes that go with Ultimate Steak dinner. Those are different all the time too. Trust dinner party is the… Read more

Is this tasting menu style restaurant? how much does it cost per person? Is there a la carte menu also?

Before coming to 2.0, guests purchase a ticket from our tock page. Tickets range from $175-350 per person and are all inclusive. There is an a la carte menu, at the restaurant next door, playground.

    Is there valet parking?

No. There is a City structure across 4th St.

Hi! I'm planning to go here for my bday, but my husband is Muslim and doesn't eat pork? How do we go about it? especially if we're going to a Trust Party?

Hello, even if your husband comes to a trust dinner party, not more than 1/15 courses might contain pork. It will be very easy for him to have plenty of food without pork—if we even serve some that night.

Is there an accommodation made for allergies?

This is a very challenging question to answer over text. As a short answer, I’d say no. But I’d like to have a phone conversation to see exactly what the scenario is and see if we can be more helpful. 949 292 6282

What if I don't drink? What are my option as the price include drinks as well?

    They do mocktails as well.

Is each person given an individual serving? If not how many people does each serving accommodate?

There are some individual servings (bread, dessert, and maybe an occassional delicacy along the way) and there are grouped servings split amongst 3 persons.

How long does the dinner last?

Not very long at all. If you come to the 6pm seating, usually the last guest leaves before 8:10. We are frequently done serving food around 1 hour 50 minutes. Many guests stay and enjoy good conversation or stories and leave later than those who are… Read more

I would like to come 4 people on Saturday May 4 at 5-6 pm can we make the reservation?

We can accommodate that reservation at playground, unfortunately we are full at 2.0 at the time you have requested. If you do want to go through with that reservation you will need to confirm with us.

Forgive my ignorance but can you tell me the difference between Playground and Playground 2.0? If this was to be my first experience should I start with one in particular? I'm super excited to finally try this place!

Ignorance forgiven! Playground is a restaurant where you sit at a table, have a server and order off a menu. Playground 2.0 is a counter where you are served a menu by the chefs who cooked it, dining with a total of 18 guests at each seating. There… Read more

Does 2.0 ever offer vegetarian menus?

Look for the "Chino Farms" nights on the Playground 2.0 website - make sure to double-check but I think those are almost always vegetarian nights.

Is it possible to buy gift cards for playground 2.0? I want to get a pair as a gift but I'm not sure when the friends would be available to go. Prefer they set their own dates

Yes, you can buy general gift cards at PG or online, and they can be used at either PG or PG 2.0.

What if you do not drink? The prices include the pairings fee.

Consider the pairing free. The price of admission is well worth it even without our alcohol pairing. We’ll be happy to make you mock tails or soft drinks.

Does anyone know if there is a place like 2.0 in San Diego area?

There is a place called Juniper & Ivy down that way that's pretty good. Different than 2.0 but worth a try

The smoked salmon flatbread wasn't as good, it looks very colorful and pretty, but I didnt think the flavors went together very well. I like the smokiness but the salmon wasn't umami enough to justify mixing in caviar and avocado and arugula that would normally pair well with beef. Making reservations is recommended since the restaurant is small but making it wasn't too difficult. We were impressed by how cute it was. It had a dark European vibe which we loved. It's definitely intimate and great for small groups, not so much larger ones. We brought in our own wine to enjoy with a corkage free. We got seated right away and our nice waiter gave us great recommendations and answered our many questions. We ended up ordering a lot between all three of us but that's just how we roll. We started with their bread & ham butter, pork pate, and burrata. The pork pate didn't come with bread so we were glad our waiter recommended it. The pate was really good and was different. It was on the dense side but still spreadable and full of flavor. The burrata had peaches, cherries and pinenuts. It was different but in a good way and we also ate that with the bread. It was more bland and nice with the pate. For dinner we got their steak tartare, mushrooms, chicken, and pork. The steak tartare was on the saltier side which I didn't mind. It was actually a large portion and sat on some toast. The mushrooms were a hit. They were braised with an onsen egg on top to mix. The pork was exceptional. It was flavorful, tender, and cooked to perfection. I highly recommend it for protein. My least favorite dish was the chicken, which was actually super tender and cooked just right. I just didn't like the sauce taste and I am not a fan of beans. We ended the night with some basque cheesecake which was not too sweet and delicious. What an incredible meal. The pricing we thought was good for the quality and what you get. Some of the portions were smaller but good for us. The pork did have a 40 minute wait to make which our waiter told us. Service was amazing and the food came out as it was made. The restaurant is small so reservations is recommended. They have limited parking and there is also street parking around.

Checked on us multiple times in addition to letting us know additional specials not listed on the menu and checking on us before social hour ended. We got the short rib croquettes and the slider flight. All were excellent tasting. The short rib was tender and the potatoes were well seasoned. The burger was my favorite sandwich on the flight. It was tender and juicy and very flavorful. The pork belly sandwich was also nice. The Nashville hot chicken has a kick to it in case you like a bit of spice. The pricing was very reasonable as the flight was only $13. The food was so tasty that I will definitely be back for the social hour but I also want to try their usual menu as well. Parking is in a lot connected to the building. You'll need to grab the ticket to enter the structure but the restaurant validates parking.

For happy hour, there is a variety of familiar simple bites to choose from. We ordered the sliders flight which includes a normal cheeseburger, fried chicken, and pork belly. We also ordered the sea bass crudo which had a tangy, oceanic flavor, highlighting lightness and simplicity. The short rib croquettes were crispy on the outside and warm on the inside. The flavors of each dish did not stand out and were primarily bland, especially the sliders flight. To add, the sauce that was to be paired with the croquettes was extremely cheesy. The taste of the food was uninspiring. When seated in the patio area by the hostess, we were not greeted by any waiter/waitress. For 15 minutes, we were left in a state of confusion. The other servers who were tending to other parties did not even care to see if we were taken care of yet. I had to go inside and self-initiate a conversation with someone at the station to get our order moving along.

It's a little tricky to find, but once you do, it's absolutely worth the effort. We started with the grilled peach and burrata salad, followed by the shrimp saganaki and the short rib ravioli. For everyone who had to do multiple laps around the plaza's parking lot to find this place, you're not alone. We were struggling, but eventually found the restaurant tucked away on the outskirts next to a private training gym (the one with the super tinted windows). Upon arriving, the restaurant was very gracious to bestow upon us a pair of complimentary lemon and thyme dinner rolls. They were warm, fluffy, and everything a carb should be. Honestly wish we had more of them, to be honest! The menu was short, which was helpful in its own way. I have such chronic decision paralysis, meaning the more options I have, the more ordering conflicts I'll have, lol. Forever petitioning for every establishment to have tasting flights!!!! We ordered the Grilled Octopus Al Pastor and Ora King Salmon entrees. The octopus was a unique take on the dish, but I don't think I would order it again. I was hoping for more sauce and flavor, but it was more of a dry dish. Still something everyone should try at least once -- especially because feedback is subjective and my experience may not be yours! My friend enjoyed the salmon dish, but it looked pretty standard to me. They also brought out a complimentary Epresso Creme Brulee for my birthday, which was both figuratively and literally sweet. Very decadent and kinda had a nice tiramisu taste to it -- order this! The service was excellent and very attentive. Was very hydrated during this meal because my water cup was never empty! I would come back to try the other dishes with a larger group so I can pick at everyone else's plates, hehehe.

Very dark and moody lighting and great spot for a friend night out or a first date or whatever your heart desires. Service was attentive, patient, and super friendly. Scallop Crudo: 8/10 Bright, refreshing, light, and packed with flavour. Only wish there was more scallop :( Fish Dip: 8/10 I think it had a mixture of three different fish. Probably the best version of a fish dip I've ever had. So many different textures and flavours that paired really well with each other. Only thing that was missing was some kind of vessel to dip into the fish. Tartare: 9/10 One of the best tartares I've ever had too. Again, incredible mixtures of textures and flavours, and the potatoes it came with were honestly so good I could've ordered 10 of them just to munch on to myself. Scrambled Egg Agnolotti: 10/10 Little pillows of goodness. Pasta was al dente, the sauce was divine and honestly wished I had ordered a second serving of this Hangar Steak: 8/10 Wished some slices were a little bit more tender but overall, thought this was a very unique and pleasant dish. The serving size on the steak was huge, especially given the price point, and the sauce and creamed spinach brought everything together wonderfully. I'm usually hesitant to order steaks at restaurants cause it's always a hit-or-miss but this did not disappoint Semifreddo: 7/10 - Super unique and while I'm not a big fan of desserts in general, I found this really interesting and actually enjoyed it.

It's hard to make a direct comparison in terms of food because the menu changes so much, but the notables from our visit include: Kanpachi crudo Kolrhabi salad Wagyu tartare Scrambled egg agnolotti Darkroom burger I'd order any of the above again without hesitation. The maitake mushroom that many reviewers raved about was actually my least favorite out of everything we ordered. Potatoes were ok and had a spicy kick to it. Wanderer steak was average. There is a lot going on with each dish. Lots of sauce and lots of different flavors going on. I wouldn't say complex, just a lot haha. Our server checked up on us often and was great. Even the folks that dropped off each dish were kind enough to ask if we needed anything further. This last visit makes me want to return next time they update their menu.

Service was excellent too. Shout out Tai? I'm not sure how to spell it. Cute inside with pretty decor but a little small so make sure to put your name down. We went Sunday around 7:30/8pm and there wasn't a wait for party of 4. Pork jowl is a fav of mine and their ssamjjang tastes pretty authentic but definitely had a little twist to it. It was super tender and well marbled. The crispy chicken was also juicy as it was all thigh meat. It reminded me of takoyaki in terms of taste. I wonder if it's because there's bonito flakes in it or something like takoyaki? Scallop pesto pasta was AMAZING. Scallop is my fav seafood and I never had a creamy pesto before. Udon noodles were cooked perfectly. The skirt steak really surprised me. We asked for medium rare and nice never had a skirt steak that tender. The broccolini tasted very charred and smoky (in a good way). It complimented the meat so well. Miso bacon carbonara was a solid choice and we also got that last time. Can't go wrong with it. The wings though were standard fish sauce wings. The slaw was a bit too vinegary or sour for me. Can't wait to come back the next time!

We went right at opening so there was no wait, the waiters were very nice and on top of everything. Their cocktails are on the sweeter side which I liked. Yuzuni: 7/10 it was good, sweet with yuzu flavor. The part I didn't like that it was the after taste. It was very bitter for some reason. Fries: 10/10 it was delicious. The garlic flavor was strong in a good way and the crispy is on point! Calamari: 10/10 can't really go wrong with that tbh Carbonara: 8/10 the flavor is there but it wasn't that special. The noodle was super al dente that felt a bit undercook (?). There was barely any bacon and the portion size is so small Vongole: 8/10 the flavor was very good. Lots of seafood in the bowl, but there was barely any noodle. The portion is also very small for it to cost $40 Pork Jowl: 7/10 nothing special. Not much flavor to the meat. The sauce that comes with it tastes like the cocktail sauce that I feel like did not go well with the pork. Overall I would give this place a 7/10. The portion size were very small, none of the dishes we ordered were special or stand out enough to wow us. The service was great. The atmosphere was alright.

The restaurant was dark and stylish, and I immediately liked the vibe. Even though it was crowded for a Thursday night, we were seated within 15 minutes. We each picked a shareable dish to split. Predictably, my daughter chose the mac and cheese. I rolled my eyes -- it's so her -- but it turned out to be the best of the four. Maybe it was the velvety cheese sauce or the golden cracker crust that made it so irresistible, but that mac and cheese was, as she'd say, absolutely bussin'. The next standout was the maple-buttered Brussels sprouts, my man's pick. If all vegetables tasted this good, I'd eat them every day. Candied pecans, maple butter, blue cheese -- how could that not be amazing? Was it healthy? Sus, but definitely worth it. I picked the pig candy for the group, which was outrageously sweet and candy-like. Clearly, this wasn't healthy -- bacon, sugar, and rye whiskey caramel make a trifecta of indulgence. But it was so delicious, I couldn't complain. The sliders were the last shareable we tried. They were fine but didn't stand out -- the meat was a bit dry. I also ordered a cocktail (something pretty and fruity, though I can't remember the name). The bartender nailed it, delivering a delicious drink. My man enjoyed his Negroni. The service was great, and I loved the grassy area with fire pits for hanging out. Excellent place for our first night out in Irvine!
