Retour du Marche a Poisson (market fish)- King Salmon
    Karen G.

I've been here a few times but never reviewed it, so here's my attempt. We were a party of four and dined here on Saturday for a friend's birthday dinner. Everything was ready for us and we were seated right away. Philippe was our server and provided outstanding service throughout the evening. Since it was a special occasion, we decided to bring a special bottle of wine from Napa. Corkage fee is $45. We ordered the following: Salade Amelia - their composed version of a chopped salad. Light, fresh, and herb-forward. Row 7 Upstate NY Badger Flame Beet Salad - say that three times! Lol. Kidding aside, this salad featured sweet, flame-striped beets that are far more delicate than traditional varieties. Paired with fresh herbs, bright citrus vinaigrette, and a touch of creamy cheese and pistachio crunch, the dish was light, vibrant, and beautifully balanced. Really good! Beets are starting to grow on me. Sashimi Hamachi - silky slices of fresh hamachi served simply so the quality of the fish really shines. The delicate richness of the yellowtail paired beautifully with the bright citrus and light seasoning, creating a perfect balance of clean, fresh flavors. Every bite was vibrant and the flavors were bursting in my mouth, leaving a refreshing finish that made the dish hard to stop eating. This was my favorite. Coq Au Vin - ordered twice. The birthday celebrant didn't finish hers and ended up taking it home, and she said it was even better the next day after all the flavors had time to marry. My boyfriend ordered this as well and finished his plate. Pave de Boeuf Braise - a friend ordered this and described it as a braised cut of beef cooked low and slow until incredibly tender. The meat was rich, succulent, and practically melted with each bite. Retour du Marche a Poisson (market fish) - king salmon served with cauliflower, lemon confit, and marcona almonds on top. This was cooked perfectly, just the way I like it. The birthday dessert wasn't comped so we ordered the Hotel Crillon Paris Riz au Lait, or what they call an "elevated rice pudding." As my boyfriend described it, it wasn't quite as memorable compared to everything else we had. Marche continues to dominate modern French fine dining in OC. The food and service here are consistently outstanding. I highly recommend it to anyone who's a fan of French cuisine.

Marche Moderne is a pretty regular stop for me during my semiannual visits to nearby Laguna Beach. It offers consistently excellent contemporary and classic French fare. It's very popular and clearly has a dedicated clientele. It's one of the fancier restaurants in the Crystal Cove Shopping Center, which has its share of restaurants. Recently I've usually ordered their 5-course tasting menu, which changes seasonally. What lured me in this time, however, was their limited-time Dover Sole Meuniere special, which they were only offering 3 nights a week for 2 weeks. Since my table had a clear view of the glassed-in kitchen, I could see it was a very popular dish that night. I started, as always, with their excellent Pain Epis bread with house-made butter flecked with salt. I also got the Salade Amelia, their tasty chopped salad which comes formed in a ring mold. The Dover Sole was classically prepared (brown butter, capers), presented whole and filleted tableside. Two staffers (including the maître d') were busy filleting an adjacent table, so my very amiable server Jeffrey did my fish. I give him an A for effort, a B for execution. He admitted they really didn't get fillet training on-site and that You Tube helped out. The fish was a generous size and delish, served with some simple baby potatoes and a basil emulsion. I had leftovers! Dessert was aptly called Between A Pavlova & A Vacherin, with several grapefruit components, plus hazelnut and vanilla. Delish! They also had a special Harry's Berries strawberry tart I would have loved to try. I also had 2 mocktails, Lychee Rose and Tangerine Passion Fruit. The Lychee was especially exceptional. Jeffrey provided great and friendly service. Service here can be a bit aloof if you're not a regular, but tonight was fine, despite the crowd. I think Marche Moderne's food is at just as fine as that at Knife Pleat, the Michelin-starred French restauant that now occupies Marche's former spot in South Coast Plaza. It also is a better value and better located for me. I of course will return.

5 STARS. Marche Moderne is one of my favorite French restaurants to go to in Southern California. It's perfect for a special occasion type of dinner and has become a go-to for anniversary celebrations. The menu changes up every so often, but the staple dishes are the following: - Pave de boeuf braise (or braised short rib served over a bone): this is probably our favorite dish every time we visit. The current way they are serving it is without the bone, but it is still delicious. The mashed potatoes are a perfect compliment. A must order! - Coq au vin with fettucine: this is another savory dish. If you are a coq au vin lover and enjoy slow cooked braised chicken in red wine, this is the dish for you. If you are already getting the beef though, maybe choose a different savory dish, as they could be too similar. - Scallop crudo: a fantastic appetizer to start with! - Bread with house-made butter: we got this pro-tip the first time we went. They make a special butter in-house. Order it with the bread. You won't be disappointed. - Oysters: if you are an an oyster lover, they have a wide assortment. We tried the Des Huitres oysters. Located in a beautiful part of Newport Beach off PCH, there is ample self parking (valet parking is also available right out front of the restaurant). The staff is so attentive, helpful, and extremely friendly. They have always done something so nice for us on our anniversary. We will continue to visit as often as we can!

I haven't tried any French cuisine in Orange County so my girlfriend and I checked this out for her birthday. Service is very friendly and proactive, but not too pushy/proactive as thy sometimes are in nicer restaurants. The duck confit was perfect, crispy outside and buttery inside. Braised rib will melt in your mouth. The tartare was worth trying, I could tell the meat was good, but I'm not a mustard fan so kinda ruined it for me. I'm not sure if my palette isn't refined enough, but I wasn't overwhelmed by most of the dishes (other than the confit). I really liked watching the kitchen through a window by our table. Made for an excellent setting! Would come back again for another special occasion.

Visited this French restaurant at the Crystal Cove shopping center yesterday. Parking was a little confusing at first -- valet is in front, but self-parking is actually on the other side near Trader Joe's. We had a reservation and were seated right away. The restaurant is bright, clean, and modern inside. Service was a bit slow in the beginning before anyone came to take our order, but after that it was attentive and professional. We ordered the duck confit, which was very tasty, and the duck liver mousse charcuterie was excellent. The lychee rose mocktail was also really good. We also tried the chicken, and it was moist and flavorful. The bread and butter they gave us were to die for ! We would love to come back! It was my birthday and there wasn't a complimentary dessert, but we ordered the chocolate soufflé and banana pudding, and both were really yummy. The bill came out to over $300, which is expected for this type of restaurant. Overall, great food and a nice experience -- just a few small things that kept it from being perfect.

3.5/5 stars Made a reservation for my birthday dinner, but it took a little while to get seated. We shared the bread with butter ($7), salade amelia ($16), tartare ($29), sashimi hamachi ($22), and bone marrow grilled octopus ($41) amongst three people. Bread: 3/5 - The waiter asks if you want bread, but note that bread is an additional cost. The bread was warm, but the outside was quite hard. The bread and butter were on the salty side. Salads amelia: 4/5 - Presentation of the salad was cute. I enjoyed the pieces of avocado and pumpkin seeds Tartare: 0/5 - Barely edible. It was so sour. None of us wanted to finish it Sashimi hamachi: 4/5 - Tender and flavorful, but nothing extremely mind blowing Bone marrow grilled octopus: 4/5 - The octopus was soft, but it's a small dish For my entree, I got the the Mediterranean sepia and Hokkaido scallops ($36), which I would give 4/5 stars. It was very tender, almost to the point of being undercooked. The flavor was tasty. The croutons were soggy. The scallops were small For dessert, I got the chocolate soufflé cake ($16), which I would give 5/5 stars. The inside was hot with melted chocolate, and the praline crunch and coconut gelato added an extra layer of flavor. For my birthday, they gave me a madeleine cookie with a lit candle, so that was a nice touch. The ambiance is nice inside, although we were seated near the window, so we saw a giant, black beetle on the wall. Our server was nice, but the service was a little slow Overall, the meal was solid, but nothing extraordinarily amazing, especially for the price.

Amazing! I still rave about the food days after to every one I talk to! We celebrated our 3 year anniversary here and every dish hit the spot! Absolute perfection - and we cant wait to come back for those yummy scallops! Larissa and the entire staff was extremely helpful and wonderful! Thanks marchè!

Dinner at Marche Moderne was just okay, and not quite what I expected from a French fine dining spot. It was pretty busy, and the service felt average at best. Ambiance is upscale, but noisy. Started with the octopus, followed by the crab and corn appetizer, and finished with the lobster entrée. Unfortunately, all the dishes were fishy in my opinion, and made the entire experience less enjoyable. Might give it another try down the line, but not any time soon.

    Desserts for top notch.

Upscale unique restaurant with amazing dishes. We absolutely loved everything we ate. The restaurant is a bit on the smaller side and it's busy with lots of noise. But we got sat in a back room that felt more private. The appetizer was so delightful. We absolutely loved all of our servers recommendations.

The food here was absolutely delicious. To start, we got the bread and butter board with the black truffle butter. We also had the sashimi hamachi and the brown butter kona crab. Both were incredible. The sashimi hamachi was by far my favorite dish. Our server mentioned that it's one of their most popular items, and I can definitely see why. It was such an innovative pairing with hamachi and a mango yuzu jalapeño sorbet. So unique and refreshing. For our mains, we ordered the scallop and clams, braised short rib, roasted duck breast, john dory fish, and the chefs special side of porcini mushrooms. Every dish was perfectly cooked and incredibly fresh. For dessert, we tried their banana cream pie, which was their spin on a deconstructed version. It was just as amazing as the rest of the meal. They also offer chef's specials that I believe change from time to time. The service here was top notch. Probably the best I've ever had at a restaurant. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and took the time to explain each dish, which made the whole experience even better. Overall, every dish was not only delicious but also fun to try. It was cool to explore new flavor pairings I wouldn't have expected, and they all came together beautifully.

    Hamachi carpaccio with passionfruit sorbet

I don't know why reviews are so mixed because I thoroughly enjoyed my time here for a special occasion dinner. I will note that you should try to request certain tables because our first table had the chance to ruin the experience. It was right by the bathroom and waiter station, so there was a lot of commotion, and it was under a harsh glaring light. Luckily, we were able to be moved, but many tables had been specifically asked for. Our waiter was amazing. He had the best service. I have allergies, and he was so attentive. He found solutions around them all. I forgot his name, but we sat against the window so that section. Food was also amazing from the bread to the chocolate soufflé. Hamachi carpaccio: 8.5/10 Super fresh and unique with passion fruit sorbet. There are two on the menu but this one has thicker slices. Soup: 8/10 Great flavor and unique but too thin. Too pricey for me. Scallops with risotto small plate: 11/10 Incredible! A must get. Coq au vin: 9/10 The chicken was a little dry but the overall flavor was incredible. I loved the sauce and would honestly have this as a pasta dish. Steak with the special OCR fries: 9/10 Splurge on the fries, you won't regret it. Lemon aioli was amazing. The steak was juicy, well cooked, and flavorful. Side salad was also good. Chocolate soufflé: 9.5/10 I wish it came with ice cream or more cream to cut the decadence of the chocolate. Overall, such a great restaurant. I do think they could make a dessert free for a special occasion given the overall cost. But otherwise would recommend for a special occasion and delicious meal.

We were here with a party of 8 celebrating a friends 40th. The service is top notch with a very attentive server. We ordered Caesar salad , bread with butter, and steak tartare to share. My entree was the duck confit and my husband ordered the steak au poivre with fries. Everything was delicious.

We were sad to see them leave South Coast but excited to try out their Crystal Cove location. Their build out was beautiful and felt elevated. We started with perfect martinis. Seated in a nice cushioned seat that had a full view of the dining room and kitchen. Ordered bread and butter, such comfort food. Yes but limited. Call to see if they can accommodate off menu dishes. They good at working with dinners. Cheers!

Any food accommodations for their tasting menu? Want to bring my parents here but they don't eat beef

From my experience with the restaurant they will accommodate almost any request. You just have to ask ahead of time.

You can order outside of the tasting menu. Try it once though. It's always fantastic.

Do they offer a chef's table for reservations?

We got seated at our table at our table around 4:30p and had the most perfect view of the ocean! *we went on a Friday night and noticed the patio cleared out about 4:45-5pm and I didn't appear to have a lot of people waiting during that time. The main patio was covered with umbrellas, so once you are seated for dinner, there was plenty of umbrellas for shade and heaters for when it got a little cooler. For our food orders, and as recommended by our server, we went with their seafood options and ordered their Pacific Ceviche for an appetizer and for Entrees my husband got the Roasted Halibut and me and my mother-in-law both got the Scallop and Shrimp pasta. We all loved our dishes and were very satisfied with our choices. Their menu does have non-seafood options, but why not to try what they're most prominent for? They don't have a dessert menu, but they heard that we were celebrating mom's birthday so they brought us a little Toffee Cake to share and enjoy...and for a place that doesn't have dessert, the cake was pretty delicious. Such a cute place all around. My husband and I can't wait to go back! Upon arrival, you'll find that the valet completely disregards the flow of the street. They use the southbound lane as a parking lot, effectively turning a small two-way road into a one-way alley. The valet guys were also rude to people trying to drive through for no apparent reason. When sitting outside on the deck, there are 12 heaters available, but the hostess wouldn't turn them on. (I've eaten at many waterfront restaurants, and they all turn the heaters on--especially when the temperature drops from 80°F and sunny to 68°F after the sun goes down.) The website states no seating after 8 p.m., yet they were still seating people well after 8:15. The menu was also not what I was expecting. While waiting for dinner, the aroma of marijuana drifted across the dining area. (I know they can't control what happens outside their establishment.) the deck is roped off because apparently it's unsafe and could fall off at any moment in addition to the rotting floor. The food: The menu is underwhelming. I ordered the chicken with sun-dried tomato risotto and vegetables. The risotto was undercooked and flavorless, and the chicken was also lacking flavor. I sampled the New York steak with mashed potatoes--the steak was cooked well, but the potatoes were cold. We didn't even bother ordering dessert and went elsewhere instead.

When booking, I had the option of dining , chef's table, or patio seating. I specifically chose the dining since my daughter loves creating content, and the indoor ambiance is absolutely beautiful for photos. The hostess seated us on the patio, and I mentioned that I had selected dining. I was told that seating is based on first availability, which was a little disappointing, especially since the restaurant is right on the water and by 7:30 PM it was getting pretty chilly. While they do have heaters outside, sitting in gusty winds with the smell of gas (especially after a fresh trip to the hairdresser!) just wasn't ideal. My daughter went back to the car to grab a blanket. Thankfully, the hostess noticed my discomfort and came back shortly after saying, "Donna, we have another table further down that's out of the wind and under a heat lamp." That small gesture made a big difference, and honestly, that's when the experience started to turn around. From there, things only got better. When our entrées arrived, our waiter Nick realized we had never received our appetizers. Without hesitation, he assured us he would make it right, and he absolutely did. He brought out a selection of cheeses for us to sample, which led to us ordering a caviar bump paired with champagne (highly recommend!). To top it all off, he surprised my daughter with olive cake and fresh berries to celebrate her birthday. Such a thoughtful touch. If I could give this place 10 stars, I would. Not just because the food was amazing, but because of the attention to detail and how seriously they take the overall dining experience. Parking is available in a nearby garage, and they validate the first 90 minutes, which is a nice bonus.

Yesterday, I came here for my birthday lunch with my mom after she made a reservation, and honestly, I wish we had just gone somewhere else. We sat down right at our 1:00 reservation and then waited 35 minutes just to get a drink menu. Not food. Not to order. Just the menu for drinks. After we finally ordered, the champagne showed up about 20 minutes later. It was served in wine glasses, which feels like basic wine bar knowledge, but apparently not here. When we asked to switch them to champagne glasses, the waiter brought out smaller wine glasses. Not exactly good etiquette for a place that leans so heavily on its bar concept. The whipped ricotta appetizer came out even later, around the 65 minute mark. As an appetizer. It was fine, probably the best thing we had, but "fine" after that kind of wait is not a positive. From there, everything just dragged. It took almost an hour for my mom's meatballs to come out, and when they did, they were raw. Not slightly underdone. Fully pink in the middle. She sent them back and was so turned off she didn't even want to eat anything else. I ordered a salad and specifically asked for light dressing. What I got was the opposite. It was drenched in a thick, heavy dressing that made the whole thing borderline inedible and the lettuce soggy. After our food, I tried to order drip coffee, which they didn't have, so I settled for an Americano. I asked for warm cream, which I've had done at plenty of places, and somehow it came out clotted. If you know anything about coffee, that shouldn't happen. At this point, we had been there for over two and a half hours. For a salad, an appetizer, and four raw meatballs. The server was very nice and doing his best with being busy. BUT, the overall operation felt completely disorganized and untrained. We weren't the only ones either. The couple next to us was also complaining after waiting 40 minutes just to order breakfast items. To make it even better, parking is only comped for 90 minutes. So because of their slow service, we ended up paying for parking on top of overpriced, underwhelming food. What should have been a 45 minute lunch turned into a 2.5 hour ordeal. The bathroom also wasn't clean either time I went, which pretty much sums up the lack of attention to detail across the board. The only slightly redeeming part was the crème brûlée, which was... fine. Not amazing. Just fine. It's a pretty space. I'll give them that. But that's about where the positives end. The food is not good, the timing is unacceptable, and the whole experience feels like Instagram style over quality and substance. Definitely not worth the money, and not somewhere I'd ever go back to.

Absolutely phenomenal! The Winery in Newport Beach has quickly become one of my all-time favorite…read morerestaurants. From the moment you walk in, the warm, elegant atmosphere makes you feel right at home--perfect for a romantic date night or a special celebration with friends. The food is outstanding. Every dish we tried was executed with precision and packed with incredible flavor. The filet mignon was melt-in-your-mouth tender, the seafood tower was fresh and impressive, and the truffle risotto was pure comfort elevated to gourmet levels. Don't even get me started on the wine list--it's extensive, perfectly curated, and the staff helped us pick the perfect pairing for each course. What really sets The Winery apart is the service. Our server was knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely passionate about the menu. Nothing felt rushed; everything was timed perfectly, and they went above and beyond to make our evening memorable. If you're in Newport Beach and looking for an unforgettable dining experience with delicious food, excellent wines, and top-notch hospitality, The Winery is a must-visit. We can't wait to go back--easily 5 stars and then some! Highly, highly recommended!

I couldn't recommend this restaurant enough. I couldn't! I should have taken more pictures, but…read morehopefully this review can do it justice. First and foremost, our service was impeccable. Our server was so knowledgeable and ready to help, she made the stay as comfortable as she could, and delivered! The appetizers were phenomenal, we had the shrimp cocktail, the truffle mushroom flat bread, the crab cake, and a baguette, and the real star was truly the truffle mushroom flat bread, which was recommended by our server. For the main entree, pictured is the chili lime rubbed mahi mahi which was absolutely delicious, tender, and all of the flavors married together so wonderfully, I couldn't give it high enough praises. For dessert, we had the crème brûlée, the beignets, and a chocolate cake, all of which were so decadent, sweet but not too sweet, and perfect to cap off the dinner. Overall, the ambiance was perfect, great views of the waters, and also, a cozy and intimate place that delivered very well. Valet parking is offered for $12, and that made the ease to get in and out, a whole lot easier. I couldn't recommend this place enough, will be back!
