I have much more experience here with piercings than tattoos, so that's mostly what this review will be about. Customer service is great. They actually listen to customers and work with them to achieve something that is a) possible given the individual's body/physiology, b) aesthetically pleasing, and c) within the customer's budget. I had most of my piercings done here by Stan and Jezebel and could not be happier. Aseptic technique is solid, and it's also nice that they have actual separate rooms rather than just curtain separators--it cuts down on the noise and gives it a more professional feel. They are slightly pricier than some other places in the area for piercing services (again, don't know about tattoos or upscale jewelry as I have not purchased either of those things), but this seems to be one of those cases where you get what you pay for. I did inquire about a tattoo here, however the artist I talked to was not very helpful or willing to work with me on designs, so I ended up going elsewhere. I think this is partly my fault: I went as a walk in (albeit at a non-peak hour) to see the artist currently in the shop, rather than making an appointment. I think if you want an "artist's choice" tattoo or something "textbook", doing a walk in here would be fine. However, if you have an involved idea or just want some space to think things through, you'd probably be best to look at their artists' portfolios and then make an appointment with one who matches your style. read more

AMAZING EXPERIENCE. Everyone was so so kind, even when I called to make our appt. I chose to go to TRX for my most recent piercing. I was super nervous as this was a more "adventurous" piercing for me. STAN was HANDS DOWN the best person to do this! This review is mostly for the piercing side of the shop because I have not had a tat from them, yet. We, myself sister and a friend, came in on Saturday afternoon because my sister wished to have some new piercings. When we entered the establishment we were quickly greeted by Erika and Tom , whom were friendly and helpful! Not only did they explain everything that would go on but they suggested some jewelry when we asked about what the best pieces were. The shop is clean, and decorated with not only some great art but they had HUGE swinging boards on the wall with some ideas for those whom wanted to get tatted up. I found them to be interesting and helpful for someone whom wanted to get something but didn't quite know what they wanted. We had a little wait, it was Saturday after all (note to those out there, if your in a hurry come early or come during the week) so we looked around while we waited to be called. (I believe we waited about an hour, but it didn't seem that long). We were called back by the fantastic Jezzy, whom took us back into the room that she works in. The room was clean and she welcomed us quickly and got down to business. She explained how to care for the new piercings and what she was going to do beforehand. My sister chose to do a double conch piercing which she was rather pleased with. I, on the other hand, just got my cartilage jewelry changed out from another place because it was rather bothersome, and now it's perfect! Overall a solid shop. I've dealt with two different piercers and both were fine. However, when I came in to purchase a new piece of jewelry, I was told on 4 SEPARATE OCCASIONS (over the phone before I got there and in person) that it would be "around $70". The person working at the counter mentioned the gold jewelry was priced by weight, which I completely understand and am familiar with, and I was given a choice of 2 pieces that they said would be "around $70". When I went to checkout after already having the jewelry put in, I was told it was actually $120. With that being nearly DOUBLE the price that I had expected to spend, make sure you verify the EXACT price of the jewelry before it's placed. I thought asking 4 times was enough, as I was told "around $70" each and every time, but apparently it was not. I completely understand the price of quality gold jewelry, but wish it was the price that I was told and had agreed to. read more

A friend and I were in town for a short visit and we wanted to get our noses pierced. We did a quick search and saw this shop highly recommended. So we made our way in and we were blown away by the professionalism and kindness that all the staff showed us. I ended up not being able to get my septum done because I am still breastfeeding, but my friend got her nostril done and it looks great! Note: I have only gotten piercings here. However, I'm interested in getting a tattoo with one of the TRX artists and will update this review if that happens. TRX is seriously one of the best places in the area to get pierced at. I have 8 piercings and 6 of them were done here, by the incomparable Jezebel Voule. Jezzy is friendly and hilarious, and really put me at ease when I was getting anything intense done. Now, I can't guarantee this for anyone else, but I have two piercings on cartilage and I didn't even feel either one of them because of how excellent she is. Okay, but not only are their piercing professionals awesome, but the folks at the counter are wonderful, too. They really make the shop fun to be in and they're so welcoming of questions! Besides the staff, I also love TRX because they have SO MANY jewelry choices. I'm very specific about the types of jewelry I put in my piercings (I have an aesthetic to maintain!) and they always have quality, beautiful stuff. I went to TRX for a daith piercing last week and I was very impressed and how welcoming and knowledgeable everyone I talked to was. Wonderful shop. I got my nipple piercings here and the entire process was great. Unlike most shops where you're just given a basic bar I was able to choose my jewelry and then match my already existing piercings with the same style. The shop is a great way to pass time and has tons of cute items including a great selection of tarot decks and incense sticks. We spent a lot of time chatting with the person working the shop, I wish we had gotten their name! Very sweet and funny and made the experience much less intimidating. The piercing itself was very easy, she was fast and gentle and it was over very quick. It has been one of my easiest healing experiences to date. Had such an incredible experience here getting my conch pierced by Jezebel! It's true, TRX is considerably more expensive than most of the other tattoo places in St. Louis, but they have an unparalleled selection of jewelry and their piercers are professional and efficient. The interior is completely clean (which cannot be said for most of the tattoo places in town) and very well maintained. Everyone working here was so friendly. Even the guy manning the front desk was more than patient and eager to talk about my piercing with me and give jewelry/position suggestions. It's been almost a year since I got my conch pierced and it has healed nicely with no complications whatsoever. I love it! Piercings are not like clothes or makeup, they're a fairly permanent part of your body and should not be taken lightly. AVOID AT ALL COSTS Went in to get my ears pierced. Explained that I wanted two on each side, that i wanted them side by side and not one dead center of the lobe and other off some other direction. After they told me the price (which was 4x more than any other shop i had ever asked about it in my life) i couldn't pick my jaw off the floor before my girlfriend paid it. So while i was stunned, we went to the back, and she explained the after care and such. Then proceeded to put them in LITERALLY EXACTLY HOW I SAID I DID NOT WANT THEM PUT IN. I've been thinking about a particular piercing for awhile, like, months. I finally decided to take the plunge and my husband and I came in on a Saturday. The guy at the front was super nice and informative, but there was a wait. However, I knew it would be worth it based on things I've heard about Stan. A little clarification -- Cheap TRX is the store and TRX Tattoos does the tattoo and piercing. They are side-by-side and have the same telephone number (different extensions) but it's two places. I could spend all day at Cheap TRX looking at different things. The clothes, purses, jewelry, postcards -- oh my! Not to mention the basement, where all the "adult" things are, hence the adults-only policy. But I LOVE TRX. The counter staff is extremely helpful and efficient at getting you in. They ask all the right questions. Courtney has a great touch at piercing. I've only had one but it was painless. I've watched her do various piercings on a friend and she is so knowledgeable -- get her on a roll and she can talk your (pierced) ear off. Laura is an excellent tattoo artist. She's done two touch-ups for me and one large piece she drew herself which is gorgeous! Her shading is sublime. I've also watched her do several large pieces for a friend and her work is amazing. Plus, she's just a super-nice person who is incredibly knowledgeable about skin and ink. I've spent quite a bit of time upstairs and all the artists I've met are very engaging and do great work. If you go to Randy, you'll probably get serenaded! P.S. Both the piercers and tattoo artists are extremely conscientious about everything being sterile and hygienic (which should go without saying) if anyone has a concern. read more

I've gotten two tattoos at TRX. I don't remember who I got my first tattoo from but my second artist was Lora. I came to TRX both because I'd heard that TRX was one of the best tattoo parlors in STL and because the artists at TRX seemed to have experience with watercolor tattoos and small tattoos, something I couldn't find at other parlors. The people here are nice, and the space is big. They have a comfortable couch to wait on, and I never felt pressured or nervous while I was taking care of the administrative stuff (payment, booking the appointment, filling out paperwork, etc.). However, my actual experience with getting the tattoos is why I had to give TRX 3 stars. Neither of my artists was empathetic. Both tattoos held a lot of meaning to me, so it was important to me that they be done right. But both artists were fairly dismissive and seemed to find it amusing that I cared as much as I did. My first artist told me point blank "this doesn't mean anything to me, but I guess it means something to you." Obviously I don't expect my artist to have the same emotional investment in the design, but it also doesn't inspire confidence in me to hear my artist tell me she doesn't understand my design. As for my second tattoo here... Lora clearly didn't look at the image I had given her during our consultation until I came in for the actual appointment. She had done a 30 second sketch during our consultation, and she looked like she would have used that instead of a cleaner sketch until I asked her to clean up a few of the details. She also simplified the watercolor detail of the image quite a bit without telling me beforehand that she would be doing so, which was doubly upsetting because I had come to her specifically for the beautiful and intricate watercolor work in her portfolio. Ultimately both tattoos came out okay. Not spectacular, and not the way I had imagined either tattoo, but not unthinkably awful either. But I'll definitely be getting them fixed somewhere else as soon as I'm able. The other thing I want to touch on is that people with dark skin ought to be cautious. I have dark skin, so I was obviously worried about how cool colors would show up on my skin. When I asked Lora about this, she told me "Oh, I never would have thought about that if you hadn't said that." Once again- not particularly inspiring to hear an artist imply they aren't familiar with working on darker skin. TL;DR the artists I had at TRX weren't particularly empathetic (and I've had empathetic artists elsewhere, so I know this isn't just "the norm") and deviated from the templates/designs they had shown me. Be wary if you're looking for delicate, small, or watercolor tattoos. read more

I like going there for last minute uhhh fetish stuff like tights, shoes, lingerie, toys, etc. ;-) I also decided to get my ears pierced for the first time ever at the piercing half of the shop back in September. I am SO glad I went to Cheap Trx and not some scummy mall piercing place. They use actual hypodermic needles to pierce...and they are SHARP as they should be....not dull/blunt/worn down piercing gun tips. *shudders* The guy who pierced me, Stan, has been piercing for a reeally long time, like 20something years or more? Anyway....he was really helpful in providing all the info. I needed to keep my piercing clean and to help it heal faster. Also the staff in the shop part are very helpful too, they even offered to special order me some boots because they didn't have any in stock in my size. I love their penis shaped muffin pans. The first thing to say about this place is it is CLEAN (as in sterile...). Secondly, everyone is so helpful and nice. I lost my nose stud and needed to get a new one, so my boyfriend recommended that I check out Cheap Trx. Honestly, I don't know much about piercings or tattoos, but when I asked questions they didn't make me feel dumb. I ended up buying two studs, one they had in stock and the other they had to order. Courtney helped me put in my new stud and told me how to do it myself. It was way different (and better!) than my previous stud. My new one is a threadless titanium flatback - oooh la la! Only the best from Cheap Trx! I walked out of there thrilled that I had lost my old stud and wishing that I had done so years ago. About a week after my nose stud buying experience, my friend from Texas came and visited. While in STL, I talked her into getting her cartilage pierced (muhahaha!). Naturally, we went to Cheap Trx. Stan made the experience so pleasant for us both - he is funny, calming and does a really solid job. He knows his stuff, that's for sure. My special order came in about two weeks after ordering it, and they gave me a call, as promised. I had Stan put it in for me to get the end bent correctly, and we ended up chatting for 10-15 minutes. Great guy. Great store. Highly recommended to all! read more

I've been tattooed 15 times in my life, in three different states by around ten different artists, including almost every reputable shop in St Louis, and Cheap TRX is hands down the best I've experienced. I cannot recommend them enough - and in fact, I do pretty regularly when a complete stranger grabs my arm and demands to know where I got such kick-ass work done. I had Amanda recommended to me - checked out her online portfolio and was sold. She was a pleasure to work with, taking every consideration into sketching out my custom piece. Her chair-side manner was friendly, funny and considerate. I'm one session into my sleeve and cannot wait to get back and get it finished. (and this is truly a statement of her skill - I get mad complements on this piece and its just line work at this point) Besides Amanda, the entire staff is a pleasure. My mother, who has never as much as smoked a cigarette in her life, decided that for her 50th birthday she would throw caution to the wind and do something that she had always wanted to do...get her nose pierced. So, this short, stubby nurse and I went to my favorite spot in town when one gets a hankerin' for a bit of self-mutilation...Cheap Trx. Her piercer was Stan, who had done a number of my piercings and was never anything short of impressive, and on this occasion he did not disappoint. I think he sensed her nervousness, and spent upwards of 45 minutes with us. He explained the details of the nasal structure, what the piercing process would entail and a gave a thorough review of all after care procedures. The piercing was quick and easy (we discovered Mom is a bit of a bleeder), and in less than a week was healed enough that she didn't even notice it. This was not simply a piercing for my mother, it was a symbol that she could overcome her hesitations, that she could do anything. Each time that we visit to pick up a new face bobble, she remarks with amazement how kind they are to her, and how welcome they make her feel. Stan and the staff at Cheap Trx gave me the opportunity to give my Mom a gift of confidence to mark her half-century of existence. And I cannot thank them enough. read more

I'm tattoo-free, and the craziest piercing I've ever gotten was my tragus. So, I was a bit nervous about my visit here yesterday, thinking I would be scornfully regarded as too straight-edged for a place like this. And while I didn't exactly blend in, I couldn't have felt more welcome. From the minute I opened the door, everyone was friendly and helpful--I showed them the picture of the piercing I wanted (three on the flat of my right ear, with diamonds that increase as they ascend), and the TRX staff immediately got to work showing me my earring options, pricing, and the important cleaning/maintenance info I'd need to keep it infection-free. Courtney did my piercing, and I can't remember when I met a more friendly person. She immediately put me at ease, and it was obvious from the get-go that she knows what she's doing -- she's not only an artist, but a smart and talented one at that. She even offered me a referral to someone in Chicago if I had any questions when I returned home, or if I needed to have the piercing looked at and I wasn't in the Lou to come in and see her. She also offered me the option of emailing her with any questions as well - if that isn't great service, I don't know what is. The piercings went smoothly, and I left with one more item checked off my "30 before 30" list. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place -- the staff were professional, VERY thorough with safety and sanity, and friendly to boot. I'm a fan. read more

I've been here twice this year, and both times were beyond positive experiences. The first time was in July. I saw that TRX was doing a Friday the 13th special, and I decided to, on a whim, to go there on Friday the 13th for a new tattoo. I ended up getting tattooed by Jamie Toon, which was a really great experience. Just like the rest of the staff at TRX, Jamie is really fun and laid back, yet professional. He took a lot of care making sure everything was clean and sanitary. He also had what I would call good "bedside manners" for a tattoo artist. He wanted to make sure that I wasn't in pain and that nothing was bothering me, and most importantly, to make sure I was relaxed. I will definitely be back to TRX for the rest of my inking needs. My second visit to TRX was yesterday. I decided on a whim to get my ear lobes pierced for the first time ever as a birthday gift to myself. After having such a positive visit the last time I was at TRX, I decided to return for my piercings. My piercer was Courtney, and she was super awesome and helpful to me, and made it was such a great experience for me. She has a great personality, and her technique was smooth, yet quick and practically painless. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking to get poked. read more

I have had friends that have very much enjoyed their experiences with TRX so when it came time to get a new barbell for my existing snug piercing (of 9 years), I figured I would stop in. Although the front desk staff was very helpful in showing me my options, there may have been some miscommunication. When I picked out my jewelry, I was led into the back with a piercer that was going to help me replace the barbell in my ear...or so I thought. What should have been an easy, routine jewelry replacement, turned into a painful ordeal. My piercer, Jezebel, seemed to know what she was doing but when it came time to replace my barbell she said that the exit hole was closed and she'd have to use a taper to help get it through. Okay, that seemed odd, as I had put an earring through it the other day to keep the hole open, but she assured me that it was probably because I used a post that was of a smaller gauge. She kept pressing and I felt pressure and pain that seemed unreasonable for a replacement of a barbell. I was talking a LOT of pain. When she finally finished, she asked me to look in the mirror to see my new jewelry. Well, I was surprised to find that she had misunderstood my directions and pierced an entirely new hole in my ear! Though she was wearing gloves, nothing was prepped or cleaned with alcohol, and no waiver was signed. When I explained why I was upset, we picked out a new barbell, which she finally put in the correct spot with no issue, then told me I was to pay the difference on the price of the jewelry...after she had pierced me without consent! I must have been visibly upset and dazed from the experience because when I finally came out to the front room, the associate who had originally helped me choose jewelry told me not to worry about paying the difference. I should think not! Although the staff was friendly about the ordeal, they did nothing to make sure I was okay, or offer me any sort of relief from what had just happened. I should have asked for a refund, but they didn't even bother to offer me some ice or cooling gel,,.something! My ear is now very sore and swollen red, and I will be checking its condition over the next few days. I would recommend being EXTREMELY CLEAR with any instructions and make sure you supervise EXACTLY what is going on. read more

Been going here for over 10 years for a multitude of piercings and tattoos (both small ones and a full sleeve), and have had nothing but high quality experience with every single staff member ever encountered in the last decade. Every single time I have ever decided to go to any other shop for piercings or body jewelry specifically, ANYWHERE in the city, it has been messed up - yes, even at other "high end competitors". I'm 23 now and I specifically remember having my navel piercings done first, at age 14, at Iron age and the barbell was literally SO crooked it was sideways and had to be taken out. Trx redid it, and I've been a believer ever since. I remember William even LAUGHING at the scars from how awful it had been done. That piercer at Iron Age also handed me ibuprofen to take - my mother was PRETTY displeased about that!!! How unethical!! All the other shops in south St Louis county and Jefferson county I've ever tried? Well, you don't even want to know what happened there.... Nothing better can be said. read more

I went to get my nose pierced and Stan was great. He has actually pierced my nose more than once. He has more experience than most of the others, is friendly, gentle, and very patient. I did a good deal of research before I decided on my first tattoo (went BIG with a half-sleeve dedicated to my family and our Chinese zodiac symbols); needless to say, I've been planning to get a half-sleeve for several years and I finally got the guts to go through with it. After about 15 hours over the past 3 months, it is finally complete and I absolutely LOVE it. I could not have asked for a better first tattoo experience from TRX. They already have an outstanding review record on yelp, which drew me to them initially and after visiting their website, I got a good feel on which artist's styles appealed to me. I ended up choosing Midwest Rick, an extremely talented and professional artist that made me feel totally at ease during the entire process. He has a great sense of humor as well as great taste in music! With a big piece like mine, I met Rick a week before the first session and showed him my ideas and he did an amazing job transposing it to paper. During my first session, I was quite nervous, but Rick walked me through everything that was going to happen. There was great finesse in his ink work; the needle went the perfect depth and made the healing process much quicker. After the first session, he made sure I was wrapped up proper and gave me very good instructions on aftercare. The second and third sessions were of the same great quality! Another thing to add, Rick unfortunately was sick during my original third session date and had to reschedule; to make up for it, he gave me an awesome print of his as a gift! The space itself is very clean and has a really cool atmosphere, lots of great artwork and displays. All the staff were very friendly and approachable, making scheduling and paperwork a breeze. I've been going to TRX for 6 years now and I cannot recommend them enough! In total I've gotten 6 piercings, LOTS of jewelry changes, sat in on 3 friends' tattoos and have an upcoming tattoo booked with Dustin. Tom and Ash are awesome and friendly behind the counter. Always professional and willing to deal with my constant questions about the piercing and the tattoo process while I contemplated various modifications. Dustin and all the tattoo artists I've met there have been friendly and professional. I've had multiple medical problems over the years and had to switch out my metal piercings for glass on several occasions for MRIs. Each time I came in for a jewelry change, I was treated like any client coming in for a piercing or tattoo and taken care of with respect. No one made me feel as though I was imposing. They're just good people. I've also been pierced by everyone who works there and they're all the bees knees. Stan, though, is the Man. He's been courteous, professional and just awesome for years and has the best piercing approach of anyone I've ever come across.
