After going through TSA they found a pocket knife in my backpack I had inadvertently forgot about.

We don't have global entry / I'm going to get it...so we were in a standard line. It took us from 3:15 to 5:45 to get through security! If we didn't land 40 minutes early, we would have missed our connection !!! The Customs agent we had paused to comment how we should have filled out our customs doc to save a minute - we replied the airline personnel distinctly told us NOT to fill it out. The TSA agent went on and on complaining. As if to say the long slow line is not his fault? I don't blame any of the agents. I'd say 1/3 or at least 1/4 of the TSA Customs booths were empty. I'd say the govt TSA management at O'Hare is inefficient. Their budgeting and manpower planning seems barely functional. We ended up running to our flight n barely made it by 2-3 minutes before they closed the door. One other couple made it on behind us and United left about 7 minutes late - fortunately waiting for us. Why 1 star? Because zero is not an option.

Are you planning on flying your dog, cat or other accepted animal to another country?…read more My first bit of advice: DO ALL YOUR RESEARCH AND PREP well in advance. WELL IN ADVANCE my friends. I've literally been working on this for a few months and it feels like a full-time job. But I love her, so there you go. Depending on where you are going the laws differ, but I am going to the UK...so it's monumentally crazy and insane. But not impossible. You can do it on a short time line...but its stressful even with a long one, so to each their own. But I am bringing her with us. Tillie is going to be British! She loves the Queen. And thus, I visited the USDA office for Illinois. Make an appointment in advance. They are nice on the phone. Luckily for us Chicagoland people this is quite conveniently located in Des Plaines, just off I-90 and near O'Hare airport. It's very near the Rivers Casino just west of the highway in a complex with white buildings. You'll drive back into the lot where a few more buildings are...then park your car (free) and walk around to the second (back) entrance. You'll go through security, and be checked in. What you'll need to get their good old stamp of approval for your pet to fly: *health certificate (from your veterinarian) with the below items: *current Rabies vaccination cerificate. *dogs: treated for tape worm no more than 5 days before flight and not more than 1 day before - vet signature. *current Rabies vaccination certificate. *proof of microchip inserted BEFORE most recent rabies vaccination. *sticker from microchip. You bring them all of these things (and as you can see, this is all a huge feat in itself!) and pay them $38 and you'll get all of your documents stamped so your furry friend can fly the friendly skies. *cashier's check or credit (all forms) accepted. (no cash). This completes your documentation for the US side (for the most part) but you surely need to visit this office if you are going out of the country with your pet...so there you have it, hope this helped a bit!

The people were incredibly friendly in what was a very stressful situation for me. They clarified a few of my questions over the phone so I was sure I was showing up with the right papers and even accommodated me with an earlier appointment time the day of my flight out.

This is by appointment only. I'm going to make this easier for people since we had a bit of difficulty finding it. When you go to O' Hare International airport, make sure you are at terminal 5. If you're driving, it's on the lowest level. You don't have to park in parking lot D, you can park inside the garage closest to the arrivals entrance (that's where you'll enter). You take the stairs down and take a left. You'll see a McDonald's and the global entry sign just a little past that. At Carousel 12, turn right and walk all the way until you enter the door. You'll need to check in at the window before entering the waiting room. The actual interview process takes like 5 mins or less. You take a picture, fingerprints (both hands), and answer a couple questions. The staff were nice and no one was ever rude. PS, exiting terminal 5 is a lot more confusing than entering. $3 for the parking ticket.

This was much easier than I expected. I was worried that it would be hard to park, far away, and…read morelike a maze to find it when I needed to bring my daughter in for her Global Entry appointment. I put it off a little for that reason and considered going to the South Loop location (where I got mine) but decided I just needed to get it done last week. I was astonished by how simple it was to find it and get there. It's in Terminal 5, and there's a parking structure directly across the street from the entrance. The instructions said that it was under construction and you may have to park at Terminal 3, but I was so glad to find that the Terminal 5 parking structure was practically empty. The CBP office was easily found once we entered the terminal. We got there about 20 minutes early since I was afraid that we'd have to find parking elsewhere, so once we checked in with the border patrol officer we had to hang out in their waiting room but they were pretty close to the time of our appointment. My daughter is only 19 months so it wasn't much of an interview but she got her picture taken and we got her card this week. This location also does on arrival confirmation, so that's an option if you don't want to go prior. But unless you're much closer to the customs office I think this is a better choice.
