Tucos Taqueria is a vibrant Tequila Mexican Bar renowned for its gourmet tacos. Located in an up and coming chick area at 416 Salem Ave SW, Roanoke, Virginia, it reasantly went through a thorough renovation. I arrived for an early dinner on a Wednesday late afternoon / early evening. Very impressed with the quality building structure renovation and with the elegant open space interior design, I asked the Host / Server for a table and I was seated and given a copy of the menu. To drink I ordered the Housemade Lemonade. As I waited and examined the menu, I observed the beautiful open space renovation with nice and comfortable furniture and outstanding works of art decorating the restaurant. The server arrived with my drink and a welcoming smile and took my order. For apappetizer I ordered the Chips and Choriqueso. And for my main entry I ordered two Flank Steak and one Pork Carnitas tacos. Two of them Traditional style and one Gringo style. And for dessert the Churrosticks. The iced lemonade was one of the best lemonades I've ever had. Very lemony and the right sweetness. The quality of the Chips and Choriqueso was superb and the tacos were simply delicious. The service was superb. My server came by at the appropriate times to check on me and provide refills for my lemonade. I can't imagine how good the Margaritas must be at this restaurant / bar. Came across the parking lot from Golden Cactus after wanting to try multiple times. Staff was super friendly and helpful with navigating the menu. I got the Spicy Cucumber marg and it was so refreshing and just enough spice for those that don't like it super spicy. Ordered the Carne Asada tacos and the Hillbilly. Parking is tough. Tiny lot that js shared so we paid for parking down the street. Friendly staff. Today was all day happy hour. Food came out quickly. The quesadilla was delicious as were the nachos. Birria tacos were just ok. The consommé was more a tomato sauce and the meat was almost pasty. I would not get those again and would try something else. It was a bit loud in there with the music to hold a conversation so we were shouting between bites. Overall I liked the place and would come back: I would like to try something else. Ordered takeout and headed across the street to Big Lick Brewery. The food was prepared in a timely fashion and everything was delicious. The birria tacos are filled with tender, flavorful beef and the consomme was also very tasty. My husband was very happy with his flank steak quesadilla and we shared street corn queso which was a combination I didn't know I needed in my life. Three stars for the cocktails. The food is usually pretty good but we dined in after an event downtown and got there over an hour before closing. Our server was sweet but so nervous she was frantic and the only other person on the floor was behind the bar and incredibly rude to her and to us. We ordered quickly but the food was not Tuco's usual quality. The burrito was 80% rice with no flavor and the Al pastor salad was iceberg lettuce with maybe 5 pieces of meat. After completing the IronMan race we decided to stop by this restaurant and get some tacos . Who doesn't love tacos ? (Tacos are not just for Tuesday) I had the rib-eye cube tacos but in all honesty, the meet looked more ground than cubed. I was really not impressed. I had the tacos the gringo style which includes lettuce, tomatoes and sour cream. The meat was just spicy with little flavor. I honestly think that I can make better tacos but after racing, the last thing that you want to do, would be to cook. I also ordered the Three Amigos (Queso, Salsa, Guacamole) and they were good. The chips are good too. The service was good but I had to ask/remind Jacob that I needed water. Jacob was good but he seemed overwhelmed or maybe he was having a bad day. The decor is nice, a very cozy restaurant for sure. Keep in mind that margarita pitches are only served during happy hour and all day Tuesday. If you go outside those hours, you can forget it. I asked the bar manager if they could serve pitcher to a group of athletes that just finished getting beat up and he said "No!" I actually I did mot even finished my statement and I was shot down. So if you are in town and looking for good tacos and a pitcher or margaritas for the crew? Look to another restaurant unless you meet their timeframe. You know the conversation you start with your spouse/partner... "Where do you want to eat?" - my wife immediately comes back with "tacos, good Chinese or Japanese". Now the ball is back in my court, she's clever like that. Tuco's is my go-to taco joint. We first ate there during Roanoke's Halloween celebration on the 28th before Halloween. We've been back a few times since and this review echo's all of those visits. It didn't matter if we sat on the patio or inside, the service was on point. The Halloween visit we tried their three-amigos chips and dip - all three dips were fresh and tasty, as were the chips. They didn't "push" the entrees so we were able to get through the chips and dip about the time the tacos came to the table. I ordered the gringo style street tacos, my wife the same - just different variations of the meat and toppings in/on them. The street tacos, dips, and chips have been consistent with each visit - something I pay attention to since chef, recipe, and ingredient availability can change on any given visit. The service is spot on as well, even if, like us during two visits, on the patio; once by ourselves the other time was the pre-Halloween visit when it was very busy. The food and experience value ratio was in our favor during all three visits so far, something else we pay attention to. We've had conversations with folks who didn't care for their tacos, but we just agree to disagree which is fine. We'll continue to frequent this place when we're close and I have to choose between "tacos, good Chinese or Japanese". read more

Really this is an exact 3.5 stars but just rounding down based on a relative comparison to a lot of other taco places I've been to over the years. I came here after hiking McAfee and was looking forward to some well earned grub! We arrived just before 5pm and were given our choice of seating, so we opted for outside. Our waiter greeted us promptly and returned with waters. We started with the top shelf and spicy cucumber margaritas and for entrees stuck with some a la carte tacos. We had an assortment of chicken and flank steak on corn tortillas. I thought the margarita had a nice kick to it, could've been a bit stronger. While I wasn't necessarily disappointed in the taco, neither really knocked it out of the ballpark for me (I did like the flank steak more than the chicken though). I was really surprised that they didn't come with any salsas or sauces at all; I squeezed some lime juice on but I think they either needed more/better seasoning or should have been served with a couple of sauces. I like the vibe here though; open, fresh, bright, inviting. I would probably give it another chance and just be sure to add some salsas to the order next time. read more

we are from ohio and wanted to find somewhere to eat during our stay here. from the moment we got there, we did not feel very welcomed by the staff. we sat down and ordered pork nachos, those were by far the best of the food we ordered, then we got the birria tacos which were just okay, then the arroz con polo, the rice was hard and not cooked all the way, the fajita veggies were cold, the queso is really what made it good. overall not anything special at all. the wait staff just seemed uninterested in serving us even though we treated them very nicely and with respect. read more

The server was very attentive and had our meals and drinks delivered in a very timely manner. The food was absolutely wonderful. I was so impressed with my food and the server "Lauren" I just had to write a short review. First of all the my Hillbilly Taco was the best chicken taco I have ever put in my mouth or ever had! They use fried small pieces of chicken that has a crispy deep fried crust. This is toped with a roasted corn relish that will just all blend together and leave you wanted to order another. I sincerely say we can wait a minute to which she replies, I don't care, I won't be waiting on you anyways. Then our waiter comes 10 minutes later and is seriously the most rude waiter I've ever had. Ask for The Rock margarita. He brings a top shelf and I say I ordered the Rock. Second eye roll of the AM and a flippant, I'll go add the one ingredient difference and huffs off. 30 minutes later, comes to take order (mind you, there are only 2 other tables with 3 people each). Order the three amigos (chips and dips). Chips are cold but we dare not say a weird for fear we might upset our hickey laden grumpy waiter. Got the Birria tacos and the braised beef was tough and dry. No drink refills offered. Carne Asada tacos were dry too. But the Hill Billy and Coconut Shrimp tacos were great. Thankfully one waitress came in around 12:30 who was super nice and even took a pic of our group. So my girlfriend's brother raves about this place and we decided to try it today! Grabbed the slow cooked chicken, carnitas, shredded beef, and the special Mahi tacos. 1. The best *Carnitas*: great tasting, full of flavor (I think some might say it's a little salty but I think it's pretty great) 4. My wife and I met some friends at Tuco's. This was our first time here. The inside was nice. It's a little on the smaller side but we found seating at the bar for the four of us. There was three bartenders behind the bar but we still waiting a solid 10 minutes before we were waited on, at the bar, in front of bartenders. We eventually just said can we be waited on before the bartender helped. We stayed for about two hours and we ordered tacos and chips and salsa. My wife said the tacos were not well flavored. We repeatedly had to flag a bartender down because they seemingly just didn't acknowledge us. We would have stayed longer but the service, again this was at the bar with three bartenders, was terrible. They just walked around and washed glasses or messed with the register and they didn't wait on anyone at the bar unless you basically forced them to. Over the experience wasn't very good and the customer service was some of the worst I've had in any restaurant or bar. read more

Honestly when you walk in, it initially seems like one of those hipster new bougie places, and it's very dog-friendly as well. However, as a vegetarian, not only is are there not enough options, but it's super over priced for what you are getting, both the size and quality of food. Drinks were pretty good and would come back just for that, but for the amount that you are paying, you'd be expecting bigger portion sizes for food and I just was very disappointed. I'd been wanting to visit Tuco's for a while and finally had the chance when I was in Roanoke with family for the holidays. A friend and I met there for lunch and were instantly in love with the atmosphere. The murals on the wall and attentive details throughout were spot on. It was great to find a new place in town with a modern, trendy, big-city feel. Unfortunately, I didn't fall in love with their food as much as I did the decor. I did enjoy the salsa and the chips (well made, not overly greasy). We both enjoyed the flavor of the queso, but the texture was a bit off-putting; it had the grainy texture of a roux. I ordered two tacos, the black bean and the roasted chicken, and wasn't amazed by either; the chicken didn't have much flavor and I didn't personally care for the chili they put on the black bean. My friend said the tuna tacos were pretty good. All this being said, both my friend and I lived in Southern California for a few years so we're pretty particular about tacos; it's hard to find something that tastes that "authentic" in Virginia. I've heard the happy hour specials are great and that I should give Tuco's another try, so I'll probably go try a couple different tacos next time I'm in town. read more
