All of 4th Street in Tucson has kitschy places to shop at from the Tucson Thrift Shop to the Hippie Gypsy to Antigone Books and all the little eateries in between. Had we had more time, we could have spent hours walking up and down the street checking out all the little shops. The Tucson Thrift Shop actually connects with a pass through with another store called, The Other Side. I don't know if they're two separate shops or one big one, but they sold the same type of vintage clothes, costume jewelry, and costumes perfect for any occasion. The staff were friendly, but stayed behind the counter and offered a nice smile and said hello when you entered the store and have a nice day when you left. They certainly dressed as if they shopped at their own store and had enough tie dyed shirts to make any deadhead happy. If you're in town, it's definitely worth a peek inside. Stopped by hoping to find some goodies. Walked and was taken away by how colorful and fun it is inside. The racks were stocked and everything was well organized. The store is pretty big and there are two sides to it. One has clothes and the other one has mostly fun costumes. On this day it was pretty warm inside and we were sweating after trying a few things on... I found some cute pants and ended up spending $29 for them. They were new, not worn. The cashier was friendly and checked me out right away. A lot of items were overpriced and or of older style. They had a lot of jewelry as well. Looooove Tucson Thrift Shop. Recently stopped in after having forgotten about it for years- it was a go to spot as a treat during my high school days. Unlike most thrift shops I adore the way Tucson Thrift separates their store out both by style AND decade. As well as curating a selection of larger sizes for the curvier girls. Although- I wouldn't say they have much if any selection for plus sizes, so keep that in mind. I don't know if it's entirely their fault or just a product of primarily carrying genuine vintage with a limited size run, but I'm sure they could probably do better for the larger ladies. As it stands I'd say I have luck with about 20% of their inventory and I'm a modern 10-12, curvier in the hips and bust than most vintage pieces allow for. But I did find a GORGEOUS 1950s nightgown last I was in and my friend who is a modern 6-8 had significantly better luck with probably 50-70% of the store catering to that size range. They aren't the cheapest thrift store in town BUT for the quality of the garments they sell I certainly wouldn't call them overpriced or even priced on the high end. Expect to spend around $35 on a well constructed day dress from 1967 or $45 on a business casual skirt and blouse. I definitely highly recommend if you're in their catered-to size range, and even if you're on the larger side there's usually a few amazing things to be found on their racks, just with a little more digging required. read more

Lots of used clothes, too.they also had a lot of things like magic tricks, and some costume jewelry. This is, hands down, my kids favorite place to shop. Not only do we come here in search of Halloween items, we shop here regularly throughout the year. The staff here are aways very friendly and helpful and unlike some other stores on 4th Ave., they are always knowledgeable about community events happening in the area. They not only have a great selection of costume items, they also have cute clothes and a fabulous hat selection. This is probably one of the kitschiest thrift shops I've had the pleasure of patronizing! A kaleidoscope of gently used clothes, costumes and accessories adorn this 4th Ave shop. And it would be easy to loose oneself for almost an hour admiring their huge collection. Our first night in town, we decided to hit up downtown and 4th Ave to truly take in the under appreciated city that is Tucson. We Phoenicians really do you our southern sister a bad rap. But I can see that your city really does have a vibrant lifestyle and I, for one, love it! Part of the 4th Ave funkiness is due to establishments like Tucson Thrift Shop, where David picked up a couple pairs of glasses and several unique rings. Okay, so some of those purchases *may* have been intended as gifts, and *may* not be given because they're so cool. But it's the thought that counts, right? The staff here go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and it feels like you're visiting a friend rather than a shop keeper. Words cannot express how much I love this place. I've been a faithful customer for about 5 years, now, and seriously cannot sing this thrift store's praises enough. Not only do they have a huge selection of used (and cheap!) costumes, but they also have a very extensive collection of accessories (used and new). I recommend coming to this store if you have no idea what you want to be for Halloween- just because they have a ton of stuff to give you ideas. It's also a great store to go to for theme parties, because you can be sure you won't be spending a ton of money for a last-minute costume. I love this shop and always find what I need for a dress-up occasion. But I had a very frustrating experience today... I purchased a few items and then immediately changed my mind about one upon leaving the store. I called and spoke with someone (i did not get the name of the person I spoke with) asking if I could make a return. They informed me that this was against store policy but asked "what's your story?" I said that I didn't have a "a story" but had purchased just an hour ago and wanted to return one of the items. They said "oh you just bought it today?" I told her yes and she said, "okay well if you bring it back today we'll go ahead and give you your money back." I said thank you so much, I'll be there within be hour. Again I didn't catch her name, and I wish that I did, but when I returned I was told that there were no refunds, no exceptions. I would have had no problem with this if i wasn't told quite the opposite on the phone. I had just driven all the way back to the store expecting a refund on just one of the several items that i had purchased. The employee called the owner with no answer and again told me refunds were against store policy. Which was already expressed to me on the phone but i was told they would make an exception. Eventually I was given the refund with quite a bit of attitude from 2 of the 3 employees working at the time. A blame game proceeded of "I didn't tell you that and it says no refunds right on the receipt you signed," instead of whoever gave me the false information owning up to what was said on the phone. I had to leave 'the bad guy' for something I was incorrectly informed about by a store employee when I never meant to cause problems. I guess I'll be finding a new costume shop in town, which is a shame because they do have such great inventory... read more

Though this place can get a bit expensive, It's well worth checking out. They are very organized, compared to lots of places I've seen in SF or Berkeley where you'll pay a high price as well. They've got lots of cool costumes, uniforms, and clothes from the past 4 or 5 decades. My 13 year old son loved this place. It was one of his favorite stores. I didn't really care for it because it's not really a thrift shop more of a place that sells cheap Chinese made costumes and accessories. Even after he paid $25 for a pair of fake leather gloves and whatever chemical the Chinese used to manufacture them burned his skin and gave him a rash for several days he still wanted to shop there. Well today during the street fair he wanted to go in again. One of the girls who works there accuses him of stealing a 99 cent gag gift. My. Wife does the right thing and maintains her composure and has him empty his bag for the girl. In the bag is his candy and his wad of hard earned cash. Nothing stolen from the store as we knew there wouldn't be. The girl says I still think he stole something. That was enough and I told my family lets go and I told her we were never coming back. She says you don't have to disrespect me. Disrespect I said! The only one disrespected here was my son! Never again wi we go into this store. Very rude people. read more
