BUYER BEWARE!!!! my friend had been taking her cars here for a while always dealing with with sean. she said sean was pretty legit and would tell her if she really didn't need something done or that she could wait till the next service, she felt he was super honest and brought all 6 of her cars here (kids , mothers cars). i sold her a 2008 lexus es350 that i bought off my friend who owns a toyota/lexus service shop. The car had about 110,000 miles on it when i sold it to her. i had my buddy replace the front lower control arms and bushings, i personally took the car to the dyi service center at the navy base to replace the driver side cv axel, the rear struts and new pads and rotors my self and i have worked on many cars and installing that stuff .... let's just say this aint my first rodeo. so she takes the lexus in for 120,000 mile service which was $1400, and this guy eric sends her an invoice of all these other things that need to be done, cv axel , front bushings, rear struts, brakes and says it's shaking when you brake. now mind you she just brought the car in for a 120,000 mile service and said it squeaks when she goes over a speed bump at her work then eric hits her with a $6000 invoice of stuff i have already done. so i told her don't do anything im gonna take it to my buddies shop. i drop it off at his shop and go run a couple errands and come back and he tells me there's nothing wrong except it has a transmission leak ........ the transmission leak was because the service she had done because the crush washer wasn't seated properly. so i went to the back and talked to the mechanic that i know that checked everything out and said "so there's nothing wrong with it ???" and his response was "no this thing was in great condition. even the sean guy told her when she took it in for an oil change when she first bought the car what a great car it was. SO BUYER BEWARE this place is shady as hell , if they give you a big estimate , get a second opinion. read more

My son brought his car in during an emergency: he was leaking coolant and his car was overheating, so we needed to bring it somewhere close to where he had to stop. Luckily, Tune Craft was pretty close, and within range for my roadside assistance. Shawn was really clear and thorough with his assessment, giving us a quote on everything that needed to be done in order to put the car back on the road safely. He even did an extra test which uncovered yet another problem (within the cooling system) that hadn't been picked up before and didn't charge extra labor for finding and fixing it. His time frame for getting the work done was worth the money we spent. My son was able to get back to work on his own within a couple of days in spite of the problem being more extensive than we originally thought it was. My daughter made an appointment for an oil and filter change for 9AM. When we arrived we were told that we would need to wait a couple of hours or more. We were told if we came in at 8AM then maybe it could have been done sooner. My daughter asked why come in at 8AM when we had an appointment for 9AM. The dude was a bit rude and condescending to her "we're not Jiffy Lube" was one of his responses. If I could rate this place lower I would, I came to this place thinking it would be a great place to help fix my cars AC that had been blowing hot air for weeks. They made it seem like my car was gonna need everything removed and taking all these parts out of my car and made it sound like a terrifying situation. I reached out to Shawn about the cost and he said "industry standard" is to mark up 20% from MSRP for all parts they install. MSRP is already 10-20% higher than what you can find at Autozone and then to add 20% on top seems very unreasonable. The service was quick but at what cost. read more

Let me begin by admitting I've used Yelp for reading reviews for 10+ years but I've never been so inspired by any single experience to warrant writing a review myself...until this past week while my old beat up Chevy S10 was receiving some long over due TLC by Shawn and his team at Tune Craft in Clairemont. I've always done my best to "YouTube wrench" around my truck these last 10 years, only repairing and replacing what was necessary to keep the wheels in motion. In my 20 years of driving i've been a believer of the common stigma that all auto repair shops are run by crooks who pull numbers out of thin air and deceive their customers. Only on maybe two occassions have I utilized a professional mechanic for work needed. Tune Craft is not your average shop, not even close. Shawn was amazing, and I applaud the service he provided for me and my "rust bucket in its twilight years". From the time before having my truck towed over there, he listened, and even performed some over-the-phone troubleshooting with me. During the time they had my truck I received updates, quotes, explanations, education and much more...very, very timely. I wasn't left hanging. I was given knowledgeable opinions and provided with options. It started out as gut wrenching to rake out money into an unknown abyss of this neglected 20 year old rusty truck that's barely worth the tires, battery and fuel that's in the tank. He again gave me options as he could sense my angst. So, after all said and done, Shawn diagnosed my coolant leaks (yes plural) replaced my radiatior, replaced my water pump, flushed my cooling system, repositioned my shoddy alternator install, replaced my drive belt, put everything back together...drove it himself for 30 miles, ran it at freeway speed, and finally only after he was assured that the repair was done right, my car ran safely and mechanically well, did he hand over the keys and take payment for the services. He took time to show me everything that was failing on the old parts and explain. I was over the moon and can't really compare this to customer service at any other shop. Tune Craft has earned my first review and I won't hesitate to bring any vehicle in my family back there. The cost was super reasonable all-in-all, especially after I experienced the care, expertise, and integrity of Shawn and his highly trained team. Truck is driving like a young buck again! Andre picked up, I told him my concerns about my prius and check engine light on. He told me to bring in the car anytime and they'll scan it and run some tests. Well once again....for like the 20th time, Shawn, Andre and the rest of the staff at Tune Craft save the day. I have had two good mechanic shops in my life. The 1st was a mechanic who conveniently was my (ex)girlfriends dad, he was honest, a good mechanic, and charged a fair price. As you can imagine things changed when I was no longer dating his daughter, but that's in the past and in Rhode Island. In California I have dealt with many shady mechanic shops, both privately owned like Tune Craft or major Chains like Pepboys. I always feel like my interests are never in consideration, but lining their pockets is what is most important. I finally came across Tune Craft about 8 years, ago, mostly discovering it (on yelp) because it was well rated and around the corner from my house. Since then I have probably taken my two cars here about 20 times, (add my friends taking their cars here on my recommendations another 10 times) for anything from regular maintenance to: "I have no idea what the hell is going on, but you here that crazy sound, well its affecting my dating life". Each time they figured it out. My two favorite things about Tune Craft are 1. They are honest, if there is a repair that your car needs, but it doesn't really need it, they will tell you: "Well your thing-a-ma-bob is broken and could be repaired, but honestly if you don't want it, you don't need it, and quite frankly I wouldn't fix it if it were me"...."Well to get this thing running right would cost you $XXXX amount of dollars, for that kind of money, wouldn't you be happier just buying another car?".... In the past other repair shops would never tell me to buy another car, they would charge me XXXX$ and then try to upsell me on something else. There is no upselling here. Also my 2nd favorite thing, they always remember you, they remember whats going on in your life, they remember which cars you have over the phone, they remember the names of your three ex-girlfriends. Its impressive. All that to say, is that I have to move now to the East Coast, but I am coming back to San Diego, and I hope TuneCraft is still in business, because I will need a mechanic, and someone to complain about dating life with.
