The food was good but when I called for reservations and asked about BYOB they said yes we can upon getting to the restaurant and taking the 2 bottles out. The waitress got the manager who informed us the both bottles if we wanted to drink the would cost $85 dollars we were confused. He had all kinds of attitude and said he has a bar and if we didn't purchase it from the bar that was the price the food was average. I would give the food 5 stars and the service 4 stars. I came here with my mom and a few friends for their Sunday brunch buffet. We sat in the mezzanine area and it was quite spacious. The round table made it easy for chatting. For about $20 you get a great variety of food to choose from: bread, cold appetizers, meat entrees, dessert and fruits. The lamb dish was very tasty and the juicy texture goes well with rice. I especially love the desserts they have, flan and baklava. Though sweetened by syrup, which my mom couldn't take, I find it fulfilling. Definitely a great spot to chill on the weekends with friends. read more

I'm really confused as to why this place has so many positive reviews. Maybe I didn't order the right thing, but I doubt I'd choose to come back again to try something else. I got a rice dish with only lamb meat. Considering the dish was close to $20, I expected there to have been some vegetable options other than an oddly cooked quarter of a tomato. The unreasonably expensive food was subpar at best and I felt like they were trying way too hard to push unnecessary items to us. For example, instead of a regular dessert menu, the server comes around with samples of the options wrapped under saran wrap. Also, they kept trying to promote their brunch, which I will most definitely not be trying. Maybe a lunch special might be worth it, but I wouldn't recommend coming for dinner. read more

I've eaten here a lot. I mean first, the annoying things. The service is pretty uneven -- like we'll get our entrees at different times. That's just bad. They should all come together. Other times it's good. The price -- well, the portions on the entrees just aren't a lot...especially when at other Turkish / Middle-Eastern places you leave completely stuffed after the entree. And I think the cocktails are kinda meh...although the bartenders are all super friendly. And, I've made reservations here several times and I've still found myself waiting for over 15 minutes. But I do really like the kofta and the bon file sis. I really do. Just wish the portions were a bit bigger. This place is a good place for large groups -- perfect for reunions with friends. This was definitely a different experience as I have never had Turkish food before. Upon entering the decor of this place is really beautiful. When we entered they took our jackets to put them in coat check. Definitely a nice perk. The waitress was nice and so was the rest of the staff. The only problem is that it was HOT in there. They tried to open a fire door but that didn't do much at all. The temperature inside made things a bit uncomfortable. Even the water they served was warm we had to ask for ice. The food was good. For apps I had the zucchini cakes and the feta cheese rolls (not sure of the exact names on the menu). Both were really good. For my entree I tried the tilapia bugulama which was tilapia topped with a tomato sauce, mushroom and mozzarella cheese. It was very tasty. What I did not like was the wheat pilaf that came with the tilapia. The flavors were off on that. I also tried a bit of the lamb which was good. My wife and I love it so much that we got married there! their food is consistently amazing. I am a fan of any of the lamb dishes they serve - I think it might be the best lamb Ive ever had. They have perfected the lamb shank dish, the gyro style lamb dishes, and pretty much everything else I've ever ordered there. Which might be everything. I am also a big fan of their whole fish dishes. Shepard's Salad is made of WIN. They might tell you that there are onions, tomatoes, cucumber and stuff... but make no mistake - you are eating WIN! read more

My favorite Turkish restaurant when it comes to classic, traditional Turkish dishes without anything funny, no spins, no fusions, nothing "to adapt to American tastes" like a few are trying. With the new decor, it is even better. Service always great, reliable, friendly, pides (the bread) is to die for, well worth straying my gluten free diet!! My friend and I were supposed to meet for dinner and he was majorly craving Turkish food. Though I love the cuisine, I rarely sample it and have wanted to test out the hip Turkish Kitchen for years. This was the perfect opportunity to enjoy a fun restaurant and indulge in some renown Turkish food. I was unable to locate Turkish Kitchen on OpenTable, so I feared that we would have difficulty securing a table. However, we were immediately seated, even though the upstairs and downstairs dining sections were both packed. We started our meal with some stiff martinis from their unique cocktail menu. (It was too bad that our server did not also partake in a beverage, since his serious and uninformative attitude was completely unhelpful.) We also shared the jumbo Shepherd Salad, which included large chunks of fresh tomato, cucumber, parsley, green pepper, and onion. It took us quite a while to navigate through the hefty bowl of healthy goodness, but its light nature allowed us to save plenty of room for our enjoyable entrees. My Mantarli Tavuk Sis platter consisted of skewers stacked with grilled chicken breast, mushrooms, and peppers. The meat was tender for the most part, but several cubes were slightly under-cooked. The sauteed vegetables were fresh and crisp. The accompanying rice, however, was rather bland. My friend's Izgara Köfte was char-grilled ground lamb that had been formed into a lengthy sausage shape. The moist meat had been well-seasoned with Turkish spices and was much more flavorful than my chicken. His rice was similar to my own, but his meal also included pan-fried potatoes, which were reminiscent of greasy home fries. Though my review contains a few ups and downs, I mainly enjoyed my experience at Turkish Kitchen. Ambiance was nice and modern, appetizers were delicious: beef dumplings, stuffed grape leaves and shepherd salad were fresh and tasty. Lamb chops were fantastic and reasonably priced. Good red and white Turkish wine list; staff was helpful in picking good bottles. I love the authentic feeling of the serving plates, as well as the Turkish coffe to put a cap on the meal.. They brought over an enormous copmlementary plate of fruit with dessert that was truly a work of art , with cantelope swans and the whole thing...but again, that was probably because of the company I kept. Maybe the best part for a bargain hunter like myself, to celebrate their 20th anniversary the whole menu is 20% off. That puts me in the mood to celebrate! read more

I came here for brunch a couple months back with a few friends. Looking for something a bit different than the typical brunch, we decided to come here and have a nice Sunday morning meal. My first tip would be to ask what the price is first (or be more aware of where it might be posted than we were). You get all you can eat at the buffet, but it costs a solid $22 - quite a bit pricier than the other brunch options in the neighborhood for sure. The Turkish-style options when it came to chicken and lamb were delicious; the meat had clearly been prepared for some time; everything was tender and succulent. The more traditional options for breakfast fell a bit flat, though; the omelets weren't prepared all that well. The baklava was okay, but nothing memorable. I'd classify the brunch option as more of a lunch option, as it's a bit heavy for a meal right off in the morning. The meat's good, and if you eat a good amount, you'll probably end up with your money's worth. But given the price - not the quality - I'll probably stick to more traditional brunch spots. I'd be interested in coming back for dinner sometime. Service was okay but nothing to make note of one way or the other. read more

I came here a while ago and was fairly impressed with the quality of the food served. The bread was warm, fluffy, and quite tasty, and my entrée, Dönerli Hünkar, was really delicious. Thinly sliced grilled lamb served over smoked eggplant purée with a light tomato sauce, this was definitely a hearty, rich dish perfect for the winter. The smoky eggplant purée was addicting, and I made sure to use the bread to wipe the entire plate clean. The dessert was, in my opinion, less successful, as the order of baklava that I shared with my dining companion was way too sweet. Overall, the food was tasty, amply portioned, and reasonably priced. However, while the food was quite delicious, the service was not very good. Bread and water refills were not offered without our having to flag down a busboy, and our waiter disappeared for lengths of time. We waited quite a bit of time between our dessert and the arrival of our check as well. While I loved the food served at Turkish Kitchen, the poor service downgrades my rating to three stars. read more

Impressed with Turkish Kitchen. My friend Christine said the decor reminds her of a bad 80's restaurant but don't let that fool you--it's good stuff. Their set $12 and $16 lunches are filling and pretty spot on. Yesterday I had the $16 grilled talapia set and it was solid. The green salad was huge and had a great dressing--with maybe just a touch too much oil. The dolmas were a bit thin but extremely flavorful. My friend ordered the hummus and since they give you a bunch of bread I stole some of her's. It was great. The talapia fillet was a good size and grilled perfectly. There was a good half cup of rice and a grilled tomato as well with the meal which were a good compliment. Another friend asked for a spicy sauce which was good. If you don't like your fish simply grilled I'd ask for that as well. In and out pretty quickly as well which is necessary for lunch! read more

Went for dinner with a gf on a Wed night, randomly for dinner. Was totally full on the inside, and some people were dressed for dates. We were post-gym - oops. Service was pretty disconnected - not very friendly, and wasn't sure who should be serving us. Finally got a waiter who would answer our questions and help us out. Shouldn't have taken that long though. Ordered the cucumber yogurt stuff and lamb shish, through server reco. Didn't sound that exciting. However, the lamb was PERFECT. Tasty, flavorful, perfectly cooked. Yum. Really delicious. So was the yogurt tzatzi (sp?). I can't really decide on this one. Basically this comes down to a 1.5 on service, 4 for food. I liked this place a lot and the decor of the restaurant itself is really cool. The menu definitely goes beyond your typical kebaps and such. We split a couple of appetizers and had some sort of spinach with yogurt sauce and some pickled artichoke/veggies. Both were really good, and then I had the beef dumplings and my dining companion had the lamb casserole. Confession: I picked this restaurant because they have kunefe(type of dessert) and for some reason it is really hard to find even though it is delicious! I had it at a Turkish coffee place in DC at the suggestion of a Turkish coworker and I was hooked, but unfortunately the coffee place was not convenient for me to get to very often...or maybe that was a good thing, I don't know. Anyway, service was fantastic. Our waitress was really friendly and not pushy, and they brought us a complimentary fruit platter and a couple of digestifs that I unfortunately cannot recall the name of. read more

My wife and I dropped by here for dinner last night and were pleasantly surprised. This restaurant is situated in the infamous "curry hill" portion of kips bay. An area that is surrounded by lots of East/south East Asian restaurants. The drinks here are strong and cheap. The place is much nicer than your typical Turkish restaurant and would be a decent pick for a first date assuming your date is not extremely high maintenance. The bread basket that they offer is nothing special despite a few rave reviews. I was expecting a more traditional Turkish offering but what we got was more along the lines of chopped up deli rolls. My wife went with the baby lamp chops and I went with the chicken skewer. The baby lamb chops were perfectly seasoned, cooked up to a medium temperature and served with a rice pilaf(contains nuts and raisins). My chicken skewer was absolutely phenomenal. I've never tasted chicken so soft and juicy ever in my life. The chicken was served with a bulgar wheat which was spicy and delicious. For dessert we got lured in to their baked rice pudding. For some reason I was under the impression that it was going to be served warm but it was served chilled instead...tasted absolutely out of this word. It was a small portion but enough to satiate the palates of two relatively full people. I told the waitress that I would order a cereal bowl full of it if I could. :). Why four stars and not 5? I didn't get the Turkish bread I was expecting, no side sauces and the service was a bit slower than what I would've liked it to be. read more

Turkish Kitchen was entirely okay, but I have a tough time recommending it for anything but a deliberate change from whatever food you normally eat (I'm assuming you don't normally eat Turkish food). The Manti's flavoring tasted like the chef was holding back - like this audience could only handle 80% of the taste he could handle. Same for the Hünkar Begendi - it was fine, but clearly could have been unleashed and blown me away. Instead, it was inoffensive, tame, and ultimately worse off for that. Finally, I usually don't like mentioning servers (because, really, a restaurant can't control all of its servers' moods), but ours was patently impolite. Whether hovering, scoffing, reaching, ignoring, or patronizing, he was consistently unpleasant. With all that said, I'd go back if someone wanted to go. It's not awful, it just feels like I could spend my money elsewhere and enjoy a better overall experience. read more

However, the food: it is just ok. My chick kebab was fatty and not well drained. It was just a small bit better than what you get at street fairs or from the kebab carts. The apps were a not bad, but still lots of deep fried everything with pita. And at this price?... nah. Dim lighting and white tablecloths do not turn a 6 dollar street food into a 20 buck main course. The menu for the all you can eat brunch looks promising. This place would probably do much better with the buffet style single price idea seen in a lot of Indian restaurants. Turkish Kitchen is just overreaching the food. Not sure what to make of this place. The waiting area places you in a position where the Maitre De has to almost knock you over to get back to his stand. The waitstaff are frantically trying to carry an armful of coats whilst taking people to their seats. And the Russian staff (plural) make you wonder if you've come to the right place. Disappointed with the "Okra and Chunks of Lamb" dish. There were only two small measly pieces of meat with lots of baby okra (which seemed to be out of a can) swimming in a pool of tomato broth. Although I was disappointed in my main meal, the appetizer, "Lahmacun", was delicious. Definitely order a serving of Cacik (yogurt and cucumber sauce) to accompany it. Would I go again? Totally passable Turkish cuisine for exactly the right price. Everything from the $30 bottles of wine to the $18 entrees, most large enough to be shareable, say to me 'come here with a few friends who want decent food but not to break the bank.' Some things are pretty standout, most of the sauces/dips/accompaniments. Avoid anything fried, there is no light, flaky touch, just too much time in the fryer. Lamb dishes are nice, not particularly memorable, but tasty. Service is warm & friendly without being overbearing. Turkish Kitchen never fails to satisfy my craving for straightforward, delicious Turkish food. However, the atmosphere and service is a little strange. Last week, I was happy to discover that we arrived early enough to take advantage of an amazing $21.95 prix fixe menu (similar choices as the lunch special on their website but only available until 6:30pm Mon-Thurs). The doner was absolutely amazing. I usually prefer mine simple, over rice, but my boyfriend Iskender kebab was even better. It's the same delicious meat, but over pita bread soaked in a great garlic yogurt sauce similar to the manti sauce. I was very happy with the manti as well. The salads were fresh and wonderful. It's quite a bit of food - the appetizers were sized down but the entrees were the usual large portion. Definitely a great deal! The baklava was very good as well. Having been to Turkey four times, I've gotten used to the style of restaurants there. It's as if restaurateurs tried to blend traditional Turkish culture with American culture by watching episodes of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Jersey Shore. So the bright red walls, neon lit martini glasses and awkward layout at Turkish Kitchen are adorable and familiar reminders of Turkey to me. The famous Turkish hospitality is unfortunately not part of the experience here. Some of the servers really have no idea what they're doing. Give them a break on the decor and service and focus on the food. It's worth it. read more

It's a good brunch, with a freshly made turkish spread, but I wouldnt put it on my list of my favorite NYC establishments. Turkish Kitchen is one of my favorite restaurants in the city! My boyfriend is from Istanbul and was craving his favorite food "Midye Dolma" (stuffed mussels) which is a traditional Turkish street food but super hard to find here in the states. I googled where to find midye dolma in NYC and that's how we found Turkish Kitchen. We've been here many many times since our first visit and the food never disappoints. We always bring friends/family here when they visit from out of town (people from Turkey as well as people from the US that had never previously tried Turkish food). I'm vegan so I really like that they have vegan/vegetarian options (grilled vegetables entree, eggplant dip, hummus, pilaki, grape leaves, falafel, etc). They have a nice cocktail menu and wine list too. The ambience of the restaurant is nice and the staff is really attentive and friendly. Plenty of seating (there is an upstairs) so I've never had to wait too long for a table. read more
