After seeing the epic movie Homer's, "the Odyssey" in Manhattan, my friends and I decided to go eat at the village taverna greek grill at 81 University Pl. corner of 11th St. Of course we'll go Greek to stay within theme as I always do. We ordered a traditional Greek dish, Moussaka. It arrived and to my surprise, I had to think about what just saw. I expected a traditional plate with a huge 6" x 6" usually with maybe 4 inch depth, cut almost like a large chunk of a lasagna, except this was served in this huge ceramic soup bowl and for and for moment, I thought we were supposed to Use a spoon and sip it ? I guess yes m, except we used a knife & fork. It tasted wonderful but to give it to me in a soup bowl ? My friend introduced me to village taverna by taking me out to lunch. I love the freshness of each meal and how welcoming the staff is. My friend goes there religiously and I really appreciate the way they greet her and even know her allergies. They're really kind about accommodating because a lot the menu items are made to order. I love the salads here! I've officially had at least 3 or 4 of their salads and have enjoyed each one. You ever eat something at a restaurant and then you try to recreate something as simple as a dressing and can't quite get it right? I swear the dressing for the Domatosalata and Horyatiki is the lightest simplest most complimentary dressing for the succulent tomatoes and herbs. But...can I recreate it at home? Nope. Ha! I usually add a side of haloumi. It's salty and grilled to perfection. I'm in love with the salad here so much that's it's what I order most often. I love the chopped salad and I add grilled chicken or shrimp. I also take enjoy their sautéed spinach. I honestly feel super healthy eating here and when I leave I feel well fed and full in a good way not a bad way. I've also had a few different wines from their wine list. I've enjoyed what I had so far but usually lean towards a rose or white wine due to the brightness and lighter nature of the food I tend to order. It's definitely in the rotation. It's a really large space. Gorgeous in the day time with all the natural light coming in. I've always sat at the bar because I feel more comfortable and casual in that way but they have a ton of tables. It's a great spot of groups large and small. Another 1st meal, but in Village Tavern. I'll give it four stars because for portions or its recipe don't justify price. We ordered the pastitsio and and sausage appetizer. The pastitsio was mostly mashed potatoes and bechemal sauce with some minced beef for over $20. The sausage appetizer was basically a half length of sausage, grilled and then sliced in half for almost $17. A side of lemon potatoes was okay. It's served slightly warm with a faint taste of lemon and olive oil drizzle. I thought it would be like a pallet opener or appetite opener to make me want to eat more , but it fell flat. I ordered a glass of Sauvignon Blanc which was fruity and refreshing and clean as described on the menu. We shared the dip appetizer - of which my favorite was the tzatziki by far! Next time I will probably just order a big portion of that. The other dips were nice, but the tzatziki was by far the best. Completely overpriced. The "Silogi" is $30 and only 6 tablespoons of their different "Mediterranean spreads." As it turns out we didn't need more because one was worse than the other. We had barely touched them, since they were so bad but the waitstaff kept wanting to clear them away. When I commented that they were really quite bad -- no offer of something else. We also orders an app with filo, feta and prosciutto, topped with a fig jam. It was very filling and the flavours complimented each other well. We ordered chicken with rice and a side of salad, as well as the lamb with orzo. The portions were huge, and really well worth it for the price. The lamb was so tender it fell off the bone. This amazing restaurant is located in union square and has both indoor and outdoor seating. My sister called 20 minutes before we went and they reserved us a table outside. The outside area is beautiful and the heater kept us warm on a cold night. Thinking about this dinner, makes my mouth water. The service was impeccable from the matre D to our waiter and the bus boy. I was really impressed. So attentive, constantly filling our water. Made sure there was no sesame in anything he brought out due to my recent allergy. The full feta was good I think it was well balanced with the figs my friend felt it was too sweet. The pits was warm and tasty. Now my friend hyped up this organic chicken. It was good but not "life changing" as he claimed. It was moist and nicely flavored came with green liked asparagus and fingerling potatoes in a lemon hunter sauce. We had a lovely dinner here -- sitting outside under their outdoor street structure. It was a warm day and the server was quite responsive -- We ended up ordering the special branzino (fish) with a base of squash puree and vegetables as well as lamb kebab with lemon potatoes and roasted vegetables. To start we had the special appetizer -- an arugula salad with a watermelon, feta cheese, and poached pear inclusion. All were fabulous -- even though the day was muggy -- so the sparkling water really helped. Oh and I almost forgot, they also brought us olives and pita.
