We were staying in Billerica at a hotel and needed something quick to eat and this was the only decent looking option. The outdoor igloo seating seemed like a risky choice (it's only outdoor seating or take out here) but we went for it anyway. You're seated in your own igloo, it was about a 40 degree night and we stayed comfortable keeping our light jackets on. We enjoyed our time and our food eating-in, that we will order from this market again in the future. We both ordered the spicy mango margarita, which tasted very good. I don't think the drinks are made fresh? Can't confirm, but I believe I saw something premixed poured into the glass I was served. We ordered the charred veggie hummus and it was some of the best hummus I've ever tasted. If they're not actually making that stuff fresh they had me fooled, so I will guess that they are. The pita was warm, fresh, and fluffy. We each got one of the bowl entrees -- the steak and a salmon bowl -- the portions were generous and the fresh, veggie forward entree was exactly what was needed for an out-of-town stop (you can only eat so much bar food out here). Overall, I've read the bad reviews and can totally see how this place would be a gamble depending on what you order. But from my experience I had no truly bad remarks, and I would definitely return. read more

I'm sorry, but I really don't understand all the great reviews. I'm not one of those people who likes giving bad reviews. I always try to give credit where credit is due, but this place REALLY rubbed me the wrong way. I ordered a classic burger and the truffle tots and was completely shocked at how bad it was. The patty was dense and bland and had scalloped edges!!! Wtf. Clearly bought from a food service company. And worse, it was completely over cooked. I could have overlooked the industrial patty had the flavor and the burger fixings been good, but unfortunately not. No lettuce, no tomatoes, just a couple of pickles and a sloppy amount of chipotle aioli. I don't think that's a "classic" burger in most people's book. The aioli had SO much chipotle powder in it that it overpowered the entire burger with bitterness. I find a shitty burger to be an unforgivable restaurant sin given how little effort they are to make properly. It's lazy and inexcusable. The tots (which I'll give you, are a slightly more acceptable item to be out of a bag) were so drenched in truffle oil that they were greasy and overpowered by artificial truffle flavor. I also got a piece of cake. How bad does cake have to be for you to toss it after one bite? Pretty stinking bad... it had a weird chemical taste. I feel disrespected as a diner that this market eatery thinks people don't taste the difference between industrial food company food and the real, freshly made thing. read more

Had take out dinner last night from Turnpike Market and it was very good! We ordered THE NEWYORKER PIZZA and it was a total hit. The flavors were incredibly well balanced ; salty, a touch of sweetness, and just the slightest heat. Even the little kids loved it! We also got the kids pasta, and honestly, it might be the best kids' pasta we have ever had at a restaurant. My toddler absolutely devoured it! The buffalo pizza was tasty but could have used a bit more sauce. The veggie (Fresca Venduro) was good too, though it felt like it needed something extra; maybe a drizzle of a bold sauce to really make the flavors pop. Service was fantastic! The sweet lady who took my order over the phone was so patient and answered all my questions. We can't wait to go back once the patio opens! it's definitely one of our favorite spots in the area! Stopped here on a whim and ordered ahead, after driving to Billerica to try another local spot, which I couldn't get through to on the phone. Ordered a cheese pizza ny style and a cheese steak. The cheesesteak was advertised as ribeye, cooper sharp and onions, so I gave it a shot as that's not widely available in the area. Flavorful sandwich, but lacking in cheese, if there even was any. I was expecting more shaved pieces of meat with strands and not the ground beef minced style which is prevalent in the area, but still very flavorful, just a tad on the dry side. More cheese would've elevated it. Really nice bread. Still better than 50% of competitors in the area as far as a cheesesteak. Pizza was pretty great. Nice crust, cooked to perfection, and great tasting cheese, definitely a New York orange slice, with a yeasty crust, chewy and springy, nice undercarriage, shaved parm over the top. Haven't had pizza in a while where I could honestly say every aspect was on point but the pizza here checks a lot of boxes. Hope to try another pie soon. Store had a nice appearance outside and inside, friendly staff, nice selection of beverages. Patio looked busy, cocktails look great, seems like a nice place to enjoy a few drinks on the water, great pizza, and I'm sure there's some great pasta dishes. I got a burger that came with bacon jam and the burger was definitely a very processed patty but the rest of the toppings and the bun were really good. I opted for the rosemary fries and to be honest, not worth the extra $2 especially as the rosemary was scarce, that said the fries themselves were good. We got the guacamole appetizer which came with an actually good portion of guacamole and really crisp chips, this was definitely a 10 out of 10. Drinks: I got a strawberry margarita which was nothing to write home about, didn't come with a rim, somehow both very sweet and with a strong tequila taste, maybe not mixed well? Value: About average for dining out at American restaurants these days. Overall, while the dining experience was very nice, the food itself wasnt anything special but it hit the spot. I used to consider Turnpike Market one of my favorite places, but after this experience, I have no desire to return. A friend I hadn't seen in years and I met there for drinks and an appetizer before dinner. The cocktails were excellent, and the hummus was outstanding. Unfortunately, that's where the positives end. While we were still enjoying our drinks and catching up, the hostess came over and essentially asked us to leave because there were people waiting for tables. Seriously? You don't take reservations, yet you also punish customers who arrive early, order food and drinks, and spend money by rushing them out the door? That's an unbelievably poor way to treat paying customers. We weren't camping at a table without ordering--we were supporting your business. Being made to feel like we were an inconvenience simply because you wanted to turn the table over faster was insulting and incredibly unprofessional. What was once a 5-star experience has dropped to barely a 2-star one. The food and drinks may be great, but customer service matters just as much. Being asked to leave in the middle of catching up with an old friend was rude, classless, and completely unacceptable. read more

We ordered from Turnpike Market for a working lunch today, and I tried the Dom's Steak Tip Plate, requesting the steak medium well. Overall, the bowl was delicious and well-balanced, and the portion size was decent. However, the steak doneness was inconsistent--some pieces were cooked perfectly, while others were much rarer and extremely chewy. Unfortunately, a few pieces were so tough that I had no choice but to swallow them whole. That said, the flavor was excellent, and the dish had a great combination of ingredients. Despite the texture issue, I'd be willing to give it another try because the overall taste was solid. Would love to see more consistency in the steak's cooking, but I can see why this plate would be a popular choice! Delivery was fine. Can't speak to the ambience as this was a delivery. read more

I swung by this market at an odd time, 9:30am on a Thursday, looking for a late breakfast on my way to the airport. The market was empty of customers (not a lot of people buy wine at that time of day, I guess), but the young lady behind the food counter greeted me kindly and took my order for an avocado breakfast bowl, which arrived less than 10 minutes later and was delicious. I enjoyed it while standing out back of the establishment (it had rained and the outdoor seating was wet), looking over the small scenic lake. Respectable lakeside restaurant that's all deck, no restaurant, meaning EVERY seat is outdoors. Awnings help in high heat. It's kind of ambitious, though my take is their reach somewhat exceeds their grasp. Excellent beer selection. Excellent vegetarian selection. Wings: Plump, with decent juiciness, decent crispness, decent flavor (I chose hot honey or similar), but could use a little more of all three. Several flavors available and not all listed on the menu, so ask. Burger: Has all the right naming, a few different configurations with hifalutin add-ons. I went with the bacon jam option and the beef got lost in the condiments and oversized bun. Good overall sandwich, especially if you view burger toppings as important as the beef (I don't), but it didn't scratch the burger itch for me. Steak Tips: That they're Dom's is a huge plus. That they're cut so small and were cooked well past my ordered medium rare are huge negatives. I sent the overcooked batch back to give them a chance to make it right, and the re-do hit the right temp. Unfortunately, no charred crust like the best ones (read: Champion's in Peabody and Tuckaway Tavern in Raymond NH) have. Sides: Generally good. Service: Generally excellent. This place still has a lot of potential, so despite not hitting on a few things, I'm keeping up hope and will keep trying. read more

On a whim one night we decided to get their Miami cheese pizza. It's not a giant large but it's not a small pizza either. Like a medium size that would feed two people. It was really really good. We were really excited to try this place as we have a new baby and the outdoor dining was beautiful. We arrived about 10 minutes before our friend and wanted to get our baby settled. There was a sign out front that stated their rules, which did NOT include that they won't seat full parties. So, we had to stand down the ramp with our 3 week old daughter and wait for our friend to arrive instead of them letting us sit and us perhaps ordering an app and a drink and adding money to the total bill. When our friend arrived, we go the same table they had already set up for us, so what was the point of making us wait? They also don't allow strollers and instead we had to balance our car seat on an upside down high chair, which really feels like a liability for them. Why didn't we leave you ask? It's hard to get babies resettled. So when we were finally able to order, we had to wait 10 minutes to be acknowledged by a server. We got the tater tots as an app, they were really delicious, highly recommend. I got the chicken caprese sandwich and asked for no red onion, it came with red onion anyway. Good thing I'm not allergic. My husband got the Dom's steak tip sub and said it was good but he wished they asked how he would like them cooked as they were severely overcooked. We had to ask twice for more water and waited about 20 minutes after we were done eating for the check and then another 10 for the server to take our card. I just was treated to one of the worst burgers I've eaten in recent memory. My $60 got me what appeared to be two supermarket type premade meat patties for my wife and I, both delivered cooked not even close to to the requested medium rare. They had that distinctive hard texture and livery flavor you get in a factor made patty. The condiments were mediocre. Fries and tots cold and stale. The $9 slice of coconut cake was half the size shown on the menu, about the size of a Twinkie. I can't understand why anyone would eat here more than once. We will never return and will likely never try Ferns should it ever open near our house in Carlisle. Honestly, the food was plain bad. Turnpike Market now takes first place in the most disappointing dining experiences I've had in the Boston area. read more

Really disappointing experience outdoor igloo dining recently. The only bright spot was the mushroom soup but everything else was mediocre at best. The bruschetta was not even toasted, the chicken marsala was bland, and the frutti di mare was the worst I have ever tasted, with broth that was somehow bland and unpleasant at the same time. I was literally washing my mouth out with water after I got home to get rid of the aftertaste. Also, no bread, and no water unless you asked. To summarize the dining experience I would say that they just aren't making much of an effort. For the money, this was the worst dining experience I can remember. To make matters worse, I realized after I got home that they automatically added a 20% gratuity to the meal so I ended up inadvertently tipping almost double what I should have. A hidden gem on Nuttings Lake....well maybe it's not so hidden! We went a bit early as I had heard it gets crowded and there can be a wait. This place started as a market that was a bit run down when ownership transferred. It took a few years but it has become a great market, take out restaurant and in the warmer months an outdoor sit down restaurant. Everyone, and I mean everyone was welcoming and friendly. This is sometimes expected when dining out with a smiley 10 month old, but it wasn't just the baby they treated well, this was clearly the norm as every other table was treated the same way. You can always tell the service quality when dining out with a baby-is it the same after she has dropped half her food on the floor as when she arrived all smiles? I can assuredly say yes, it is the same here! Excellent service. The owner (I think he was the owner ?), and his wife (again not sure) were attentive to all tables and supportive to the staff. I could go into great detail about the food but this review would turn into a book! We got a few varied dishes with a start of rosemary fries. My son in law requested those first as the baby was getting hungry. They were delivered in minutes. Everything was delicious. I had the best falafel wrap I've ever eaten anywhere! My husband ordered for me and ordered a side of fries but the wrap was so huge I didn't need the fries! And the pizza was a huge hit for the kids. And the view of the lake was stunning! read more

Awesome outdoor dining in an unexpected spot right on the water. The parking lot is a bit small so watch out for that, but if you're able to get a spot it's worth it as the food is really good. The Dom's steak tips were awesome and the mashed potatoes were also excellent. There were many choices of pizza and the meatball ricotta was delicious. They have beer and wine offerings as well as canned cocktails, but as they do not have a full bar you can't order any ad hoc drinks that aren't on the menu. Highly recommend this spot! read more

New-ish place. Have visited twice. Both experiences were delightful. First visit, I ordered the pasta carbonara on fettuccine. Really good and I am a carbonara aficionado. Second visit, we ordered the pasta carciofi (artichokes), with chicken, again over fettuccine - perfect, al dente. Zesty, lots of capers, tasty artichokes. All in all, we'll return. They deliver, and food pickup time can be specified - a convenience for sure. The place is still a bit of a work in progress - beer selection is still in flux but interesting nonetheless. Wine selection looks pretty complete but we have only tried the Pinot Grigio. $10 price was most reasonable. Try it. read more

I was blown away by turnpike market! I came here in a group of 6 on a Friday night. We didn't have to wait too long to be seated despite there being limited tables. The entire patio is lit up and overlooking Nutting lake. They play soft instrumental music in the background. Really hard to beat this ambiance! The staff were noticeably friendly and very attentive to every party dining there. The food is incredible! We started off with a hummus plate and jumbo bacon tots. All six of us ordered different entrees and were all satisfied with our dishes! Portions are generous. I definitely left here full! The back deck on the lake is a nice dining experience with a fresh and flavorful menu. Decent staff, good scenery, a bit pricey. The name "market" is also misleading. The rather stark interior is basically a beer and wine store with Ben & Jerry's in a freezer case, and a counter to pick up takeout. There is no traditional market with a variety of foods or goodies, which we discovered when we thought we'd peruse the "market" after our meal. ;-) If u have a specialty wine or beer in mind, it suits that purpose. read more

I have been to TM many times. The food is fantastic, well cooked and great presentation. The staff is inattentive and polite. The owners fun and personal. I have tried a number of things on the menu but the pizza is my go too. The Neapolitan is light and crispy as it should be and not over sauced or cheesed. The whole menu is diverse and anyone can find something delicious to enjoy. The pricing here for food is fair. The drinks can be a bit pricey but they are fantastic and flavorful. Eating outdoors can be a hit or miss but mother nature rules the day. When the weather is good, eating there is like a dream, especially at sunset. Cannot wait for the new inside dining area to open as takeout for us is not an option during the colder winter months. Keep up the attention to detail!...your doing great! read more
