For starters, amazing coffee and merch. There are times over the years I've taken 20 min detours off the parkway on the way to work. The cafe is so cute and chic and really had an awesome feel prior to COVID. I hope you guys are able to reopen safely soon. That being said, what really drove me to Yelp was to recognize how INNOVATIVE they have been this year. Other businesses have just complained about the rules and the hurdles. They added a contactless pickup window, built a very user-friendly mobile app with order ahead, and are still building great relationships even if we are separated by plexiglass. That shows a real spirit of wanting to rise above the challenges and I don't think words can capture how awesome that is. read more

My girlfriend and I had just finished our lunch at the Speakeatery and needed a great cup of coffee. Thankfully I had already planned out our trip and it included a stop at this lovely coffee joint. I consider myself a bit of a coffee snob; life is too short for mediocre coffee, so after reading the reviews I had to try a pour over. I wasn't even sure what I wanted but the girl behind the counter was so helpful. She asked what my usual blend was and I told her I enjoyed a medium bodied blend. She suggested their Colombian pour over. I wish I had taken a picture of the menu because I can't fully describe the flavors without it. The coffee was bold and rich. Recently tried this place out with a friend after seeing its great reviews on Yelp. When we entered, I was surprised to see how spacious it was inside. There's plenty of seating inside and outside, and we might have elected to sit outside if it weren't on such a busy road. My friend and I both got mochas, mine hot and hers iced. The latte art design on mine was beautiful, and the taste was pretty good, although a little bitter. I'd also be more impressed if they made their own syrups instead of using Ghirardelli. There's a pretty good selection of baked goods, I tried the butter scone and my friend the apple danish. Both were good, nothing out of the ordinary. Turnstile is craft coffee done pretty well. For the coffee and food offerings I'd really only give three stars, but because of the great atmosphere I'll up it to four. read more

Stopped by at this coffee shop before getting ready for Christmas Eve dinner at my bf's fam. I had chai and bagel with cream cheese while the rest had bagel and regular coffee. My chai was brewed to perfection, it was just right. Everyone enjoyed their coffee as well. A nice addition in the heart of Belmar. If i live in the area, i'll def frequent this establishment. I had been deciding between this and another local coffee place. Unfortunately I chose the other first and immediately regretted it. I came here after in need for better coffee. The coffee and food menu was much better here and had a greater variety of options. The decor was appealing and the environment was calm and comfortable. The staff was friendly and helpful. This is a legitimate third wave coffee bar and roaster, conveniently located near Route 35 in Belmar. I was wavering between four and five stars, but it is a bit pricey, and lost points for the value proposition. My flat white was well executed but on the small side, even compared to a place like Bluestone Lane. You'll have to ask an Australian whether it is legit to do a design pour into those special flat white bubbles. La Portena had a regular which went over well. I had a a 24 oz. nitro cold brew second round - there was a lot of ice so there was not as much coffee as that seems - I thought $5.75 was a little steep. Accompanied the coffees with a pain au chocolat said to hail from Balthazar. We also bought two bags of the house roasted beans - somewhat disappointed that they do the 12 oz. size here - noticed full pound bags at about the same price at Asbury later that day. I did prefer Turnstile's nitro to Asbury's cold brew, but that's comparing apples and oranges. Nice decor, you'll want to linger. Overall somewhere between 4 and 5 stars, the Yelp average is spot on. read more

Found this local gem while vacationing in Belmar last week. Went twice while we were there and it was wonderful! Tried the pour overs, lattes and Chai tea and highly recommend all of them. Great local independent coffee place! They have great varieties to choose from and have mastered the art of a mocha if that is more your thing. This is a place where you can have a seat and read the paper if you want to without feeling stuffed in, like the craziness of Starbucks. They have just a few food choices, like yogurt parfaits, pastries, muffins, oatmeal, etc. so don't go in expecting to order a breakfast sandwich. stopped in this morning for a cappuccino and a bagel with cream cheese. Sounds basic, I know but first of all the staff is absolutely the most welcoming friendly people ever! Kudos to the owner, your staff is delightful. My cappuccino was delicious! I could taste how fresh the coffee was and again the gentleman who made it was all smiles. I was in and out in less than 2 minutes. Bagel was crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. A delightful breakfast on the go and I felt compelled to come write this review. I am torn on this review. It was my first and only time in this cafe, but I do plan to go back soon to re-assess and see if my trip was only a fluke. The service here was awesome. I was greeted promptly, and the barista was knowledgable about the product and was friendly throughout the experience. I ordered an double espresso, and a 16 ounce drip coffee to go. The barista pulled the espresso shot like she had been doing it all her life. She was quick, and the shot poured perfectly. It tasted as good as it was prepared. I fully expected to be blown away by the drip coffee as well! I am not sure if the drip coffee in the airpot was past its prime, if the origin or blend was not particularly special, or if it was not brewed perfectly. The coffee was not bad, it was just bland and not particularly enjoyable. I am going back for sure, and I will update after re-evaluating. The espresso, layout, ambiance and barista were just too damn good for the drip coffee to be so average. It HAD to have been a fluke. Otherwise, I highly recommend this place. Great spot to sit and relax, and if you are an espresso junkie you will not be let down. read more

If you're in Belmar, driving along Main St, PLEASE drive past Dunkin Donuts and take a right on 16th avenue and discover an absolute gem of a coffee shop. As an admitted coffee snob, this place would stand up to the great coffee shops in New York, SF and Seattle, serving Stumptown, Intelligentsia and their own roasted coffees that are as good as the more famous roasters they feature. They offer coffees made by the cup as well as cold-brewed iced coffee, which is much less bitter than typical iced coffee. Obviously, they know their stuff! The space is also comfortable, warm and inviting with a great aesthetic and sense of style. My friend is a big fan of this coffee shop, so we stopped here for a beverage on a Sunday morning before heading to brunch. My friend comes here so often that when the employees see her they immediately start making her iced coffee with almond milk to go. On a Sunday morning Turnstile's was busy. There were people sitting at the tables and lots of people taking their coffee to go. The coffee shop has a rustic feel. There are small and large tables to sit and dissect the events of a Saturday night. Along with the tables there is a coffee bar area in front of the window facing 71. My friend stuck with her usual drink and I ordered a Chai Tea. The Chai Tea is made in house and was really delicious. I could taste all of the different spices used in the tea but the ginger seemed the most prominent. The last time I had a Chai Tea that was this good was at Small World in Princeton. The only complaint is that this coffee house charges extra when you order almond milk instead of regular or even soy milk. In reality, the shelf life of almond milk is longer than regular milk, so why the up-charge? read more

Ok, I am gonna say it. This is the best coffee I have ever had in my life. Ok. I said it. That's right. Better than all the fancy coffee shops I visit in Manhattan and other parts of the world. It has a wonderful taste. Perfectly brewed. Rich, flavorful, full-body, just WOW. Ok, so I have had baristas in Manhattan and Vancouver draw elaborate, fancy flowers and hearts and stuff in the foam of my bland lattes. And the barista at Turnstile certainly tried, but his leaf was blob-ish. But WHO CARES? It was the best tasting coffee I have ever had. The shop is cute. Antique wood floors, leather couches, cool stools, neat art. Beautiful. The only con was that my latte was $4.37...Pricey coffee! I truly love this place. I'm a native of NJ and come back to visit family often. Turnstile Coffee Bar is new since we moved to Boston. The cafe itself is gorgeous. Well arranged, trendy and even gives you a glimpse into the coffee bean process. The espresso machine was truly a sight to behold and the espresso that came from it was even more amazing. Not for the Dunkin Donuts lover, this was the closest thing to what I have had in Paris and Rome since I visited both places last. Truly wonderful to taste. The staff is friendly and willing to help and the "Turnstile" branding makes this place feel as professional as it is. So why 4 stars and not 5? Let me first say that these things would not keep me from going here and it would be my go-to shop if I moved back to NJ. Nevertheless, some room for improvement... 1. The price is a bit high. But so is Starbucks. And I am admittedly cheap. 2. The tea selection. I was hoping for more decaf options. While they did have a white tea which is low on the caffeine scale, I was hoping for a decaf option other than chamomile. 3. I got a caffeinated latte when I ordered a decaf. This was what really made me knock it down to 4. I have a negative reaction to caffeine (shakey, anxious and insomnia no matter what time of day I drink it). So I ordered a decaf my first time here, was a little nervous they may not have gotten it right but didn't want to be high-maintenance so I didn't say anything. Unfortunately, later that day I was pretty sure it was not decaf. The next time I went back, I made more of a big deal about the decaf and noticed where they pulled the decaf beans from and sure enough, it was from a different place than where they pulled the beans for my first drink. Now let me say that you will notice that the wrong drink didn't stop me from coming back. Again, I love this place. I only rank it 4 out of 5 because I think the staff may need to work on how they hand off drinks to ensure they are made correctly, not just for people with negative issues like mine, but more so for the picky person who wants their drink "just right" and won't come back if they get it wrong. This cafe was the best latte and mocha I have had in the states in a VERY long time. Go with confidence and enjoy! read more
