Absolutely loved the food and decor. I placed my order and went to have drinks at the winery next door. The owner was very polite and made sure we had everything we needed. This location is more of a local dive. The locals know everyone, and the surrounding neighborhood is very busy. I would actually give this location a 3.5 but rounded up because the food outshines all of my complaints. The cons were the very limited parking, the use of paper and plastic ware. Lastly, the in restaurant service was extremely SLOW and when I finally got my drink order there was lint or paper floating around in it. I will say, though, that the staff was VERY NICE, and they were apologetic about the wait times. It should be noted that each order is made at the time of the order. The food was phenomenal and the overall vibe of the location was very relaxed. This is a location that you must order ahead for pick up or dine in ONLY if you have an hour to wait. read more

Staff: Extremely helpful and over all amazing Food: Absolutely amazing !!! Everything comes out nice and fresh. The Fried catfish and chicken was seasoned to perfection and juicy. The mac n cheese was a whole catch. It was nice and cheesy, had me saying "dry where?" lol and tasted so good. The collard greens was even better. Literally everything was on point. Today two of my friends and I went to Ty's Joint. All three found it to be clean. The food that we tried was fried perch, bluegill and catfish. The sides were coleslaw, fries, fried green tomatoes, collard, greens, mac and cheese.Turkey and chicken sandwiches. The coleslaw, macaroni and cheese and collard greens were Excellent. Too full to eat the fish however in the evening I finished the macaroni and cheese and a piece of catfish which was excellent also. The staff were very friendly. It was disappointing that they had No sweets. I was looking forward to peach cobbler. Very poor selection of soda. No diet drinks. The condiments were not in view so I didn't know they had vinegar, hot sauce or tarter sauce. read more

The food has always been good. But we were up there this past weekend and my aunt picked up takeout and I have to say this was the best catfish I've ever had. This was not the only thing, the dressing was good, the sweet potatoes were better than mine & everyone loves mine , greens had a little kick and onion rings were on point!! So good!!! The potato salad was average but not worth dinging them a point. I would suggest trying them out with my whole chest. read more

Having lived in Mississippi I take my southern food *very* seriously. I'm happy to report that Ty's is the absolute best. The batter they use for the fried catfish and chicken is better than anything you have ever tasted and every item on the menu is sublime. We absolutely loved Ty's Joint :) on our visit to Kalamazoo, MI! We came & ate there more than once! This is definitely a must try if you want amazing home cooked Southern style soul food! The ambience is a laid back cozy yet sophisticated beautiful decor inside great for families! Both the food and customer service were phenomenal! I really loved the 4 piece whole fried chicken wings dinner which was freshly cooked and hot out the grease reminding me of homemade fried chicken made with love seasoned perfect not bland! The fried shrimp I also tried was fresh hot out the grease, crispy, & well seasoned also!!! The portion sizes were filling & great for the value as both my husband and I were stuffed. All the different sides were great such as the yams, greens, & mac & cheese! We met the owner both times during our visit and he was very personable & customer service oriented with attentiveness. We didn't try everything in the menu but I think any menu items would be great with the home cooked vibe!!! We definitely plan on coming back often! Great spot on Portage Rd! The interior is beautiful, comfortable, and clean. Warm wood furniture and tables, Edison bulb light fixtures, R&B playing in the background = welcoming & relaxing. There are dominoes & cards available to play while you wait for your order. The service is fantastic. They even recommended a different combo for the food I ordered to help me save money. That is old school customer service & integrity, which is uncommon these days. Now, the most important part, the food: catfish on point with a seasoned dredge that was light and delicious. Collards with turkey bits, well seasoned, a little heat & perfectly tender. Lastly, hand dipped ice cream is available and you don't see that many places now either. For my side, I had a mound of mac and cheese that filled a cereal bowl! Wish they served tea and not just punch or soft drinks. Portions are generous, so bring an appetite. Wow I've been wanting to come here for awhile and glad I finally did! I had the chicken and waffles and they were great- and only $10 for a yummy waffle and two perfect wings. My husband had perch and catfish with Mac and cheese and greens- everything was delicious. Great seasoning, cooked/fried perfectly, even the Mac and cheese was moist not dry. The pictures are true and yes that is a four piece chicken dinner and no, I could not eat it all in one setting. The chicken was fresh out the grease, the Mac was tasty and well seasoned. The greens (with turkey) had a kick ass pot liquor. Cornbread was cornbready, but I was not there for that. All in all, next time I'm in Kzoo, no doubt I will be back to Ty's. Good food indeed? though nothing your doctor us going to encourage LOL. The blue bill was good --maybe a tad overcooked--and the fried chicken had a delicious coating --even though I believe the breast to be overcooked as well (stick with the legs and wings, for flavor.) Green beans were superior in flavor. Cornbread was the best--yummy. Mac and cheese pretty standard fare, made with 'American' faux cheese cheese. Our trouble was with the service and our order being truly filled. We ordered everything online and received a call saying half our order (the crab boil, and one of the desserts) was unavailable. When we picked up our meal we were able to choose alternatives; however when we arrived home, we discovered a missing fry side (fried potatoes) and a missing dessert which they'd not told us we wouldn't receive. Apparently the ONLY dessert available was carrot cake, which we hadn't ordered --because it wasn't on the online menu! Ty's is potentially an excellent place that needs to step up its attention to detail, service, and supply issues. We'll definitely try them again, with hopes these get rectified. Today was my first visit to Ty's Joint. First you enter into a beautiful building only to be greeted by friendly faces. There was a large selection to choose from on the menu it was hard deciding! I went with the perch and shrimp entrée w two sides ( Fries & Onion Rings ). The fries were typical flats. The Onion Rings were immaculate and I will be getting more. Hand made freshly breaded and fried. Same can easily be said about my Perch & Shrimp. They were lightly breaded with a crispy golden finish. Overall wonderful place, location, people, and last but not least the FOOD. I will be returning and I hope the same can be said for future customers. Only downsides are awkward parking and fair prices! Seafood isn't cheap remember, but for those worried about pricing there are cheaper options if you look for the sandwich section on the menu.
