Nestled in downtown Kalamazoo, Brick and Brine specializes in cocktails and steaks, but they also offer a variety of menu options to fit all tastes. We celebrated my father's 70th birthday here, and it didn't disappoint. They offer a variety of spaces to fit small and large groups. We hosted 10 people in their main dining room, and it was the perfect ambiance. Their dinner rolls are complimentary, super fluffy and come with a side of black salted butter. We also started with the house salad, and I split two specials - a potatoes au gratin dish along with a dish called Jafar's Chicken. Both were incredible. Not a fan. We were seated in the lounge area while the rest of the place was not very crowded. We were not offered lounge specials, I realized after the fact. The seating was uncomfortable- our knees were touching the underside of the table because the tables in the section are short and not meant to be dining tables for a full on sit down meal. My fiancé is 6' and his knees wouldn't fit under the table so he spent his whole meal eating hunched forward over the table. Service was ok. Food was mediocre. read more

Wow, what a wonderful anniversary dinner! As old fans of Zazio's, we left the area right before B+B opened, but we have been excited for the opportunity to try it. After a long wait, it didn't disappoint. Walking in, we were struck by the beautiful remodel that was done (maybe with the exception of the very green glass chandelier that you'll either love or hate). The windows into the kitchen provide a wonderful view of the magic as it happens, and the old chef's table experience that looked like a Food Network set has been changed into a cozy kitchen table experience that looks delightful. I rarely give out 5 star reviews these days but Brick and Brine, was truly exceptional! The decor and design in the restaurant was modern and comfortable at the same time! Started with a French onion soup the cheese was cooked perfectly on top and the onions were delicious, 9/10 all time! My wife and I was at Radisson hotel for VFW dept convention, we was both excited being there because of convention and we celebrate paying off our home. My wife order scallops and I order the steak. My wife had to send the scallops back twice because they were under cook. She didn't like the purple mash potatoes, I order the desert pineapple up side cake with ice cream the desert was not good, the ice cream was salty, coffee was very weak. we was very disappointed with the dinning experience price 216.00 with out drinks. I want to start off my saying I had a great experience a few months ago. So great, that I brought coworkers tonight and felt our experience did not live up to expectation. Our server was great. Really warm and welcoming. We ordered the meatballs for an app to share and they were great. The tomahawk was really what brought me back to Brick and Brine. I was so excited to share this. Around 30-40 min after our order was taken we were informed that the kitchen had overcooked our steak and they would have to redo the plate. Another 30 minutes and still no food on the table. We were assured that they were adding finishing touches and would be served shortly. Mind you this has been over an hour since we ordered and it was a routine week night. We were very much looking forward to the main course at this point. To our disappointment the steak was far too rare for a medium rare cut. I try not to be too picky about rare meat but this being a work dinner we sent the food back to be cooked longer. All in all it was just ok this go around. The potatoes might have been the best part of the meal. Meat lacked flavor. I did have higher expectations and I know that it has been done before, having dined here just months ago. Not only is this place beautifully decorated, it has the good food chops to back it up! Came here for our anniversary and they did all they could to make sure we felt special. Small touches like merely acknowledging special occasions make an enormous impact! Our server, Anna, was well informed, gracious and just charismatic enough. Food was delicious, of course. I had the soft shell crab special, husband had the hanger steak. We split the peeled carrot salad (very nice) and shared the burrata toast to start, which was delicious. 2nd visit here... first time was amazing. This time I took the recommendation of the waiter and got the oven roasted chicken. It was tough and over cooked. Gave them the feedback and asked for the fried chicken I got last time. They said it would take 40 min. I was happy to wait, ordered another drink while I waited. They packaged my chicken and said hope you enjoy at home. My wife asked for a manager and he asked what he could do and just stared at our table. In the online reservation i mentioned that i am celebrating my husband birthday, but when we arrived the had us seated next to the kitchen door, very noisy, smelly and disturbing for a couple who are celebrating a special occasion and want a cozy romantic spot to enjoy their time. So, we were understanding and kind. HOWEVER.....The food took FOREVER!! Then all the burgers were over-cooked, ordered medium, got well and the fries were old. The François was burnt and the only thing sent back to the kitchen. We decided not to order dessert based on the experience. I am the only person who had celiac and I was not cross contaminated and that was the only positive thing. I pointed out all the empty table and that no one can make a reservation on OpenTable after 9:45pm (I knew this because I was going to make a reservation before arriving.) After consult with the manager, we were shown a table and Steve was assigned to serve us. The manager personally came over to apologize, explain how they try to start ending table service systematics at about 9:30pm, but that he would find us a server. Basically, it all worked out in the end. We got seated. We ordered the Feta"beginnings" menu item and it was DELICIOUS!! Bread was very warm, the feta was nicely whipped with honey contrast against the sour feta backdrop was amazing! The drinks were very good - my wife had the "Seven Wonders" and I had an Expresso Martini. Both were great. Steve was a solid server. We made an online reservation and noted it was our anniversary. The grilled focaccia they're served with was warm and perfect for putting a bite of meatball on or dipping in the sauce. The steaks done come with sides so you'll order those separately and they price and serve them to share. We shared the onion rings which were huge and extra crispy and served with garlic aioli, yum! I've never been disappointed by Brussels Sprouts and these are exceptional. They soft on the inside, slightly crispy on the outside and tossed with soy, chilies, bacon and topped with peanuts. I ordered the Butchers Cut 10 oz Hanging Steak and loved it. I ordered it medium and it was grilled perfectly. They serve it with a whole grilled garlic which is perfect to eat with every bite of steak. You can order sauces separately which I did. I loved the scallion & garlic ash butter. They bring out complimentary bread as well. We had the scallops and duck for the entrees and both were perfect. Ended with the apple pie a la mode and it was divine! The mixologists here are incredibly knowledgable and the bar is stacked- even bad crème de violet which I have found is very hard to come by. We got two desserts, the chocolate fudge cake and the orange bread pudding. Mind had a really good savory sauce flavor but left me disappointed with the dry way over cooked beef tips. It was surrounded by excellent pasta etc. so I was able to get it down. I will give them 1 more shot in the future it could have been a tough night where only cooks covered while the chef was off this Friday night. The service was excellent and some of the dishes were made very well, but we had a few dishes that were surprisingly cooked poorly and not seasoned well. Started with a great B&B Martini and some bourbon- the martini was excellent. A smoky twist with a blue cheese olive. Ordered the Caesar salad and wedge salad. Wedge was excellent! Delicious bacon, marinated tomatoes, pickled onion- very good. The Caesar was lacking dressing. Half of it was without dressing. We had scallops for an appetizer which were done very well. Highly recommend. The miso salmon entree was also nice. Salmon was cooked great. The beans must have sat out for a while and appeared a little dry but overall, it was a nice dish. Ordered their $70+ ribeye and asked for medium-rare. It came very overcooked and under seasoned- it was highly lacking salt. It also wasn't a good cut of meat. Expected it to be amazing for the price. We sent it back. Had a side of brussel sprouts with the steak- this was a yummy side dish. A little sweet with bacon. The lamb pappardelle was very gluey- the homemade noodles were all clumped and stuck together in the bowl of pasta. That was also a disappointment and we didn't eat more than a few bites. We ordered the fudge cake to-go. Our waiter was kind enough to remove the ribeye and the dessert from our tab due to the steak issue. Although- we never received the dessert in our take out bag. We thought all of the food was inside of the bag and we left, but apparently our dessert was missing. We tipped our server on the total meal (including the steak and dessert) but sadly missed the dessert. For a bill of $250+, we definitely expected food to be cooked better and seasoned better. The dessert mishap was unfortunate as well. Since this was our first date night in over 7 months, we left a little disappointed. My wife brought me here for my birthday. I was excited since this restaurant is supposed to be "the fanciest" in Kalamazoo, but it disappointed me. Here's my overall review: Pros: - The atmosphere was classy, nice, and clean. I liked the vibes. - The staff was friendly and welcoming. Almost everyone there wished me a happy birthday, which was a nice gesture. Cons: - They gave us a seat right next to the kitchen door. I don't want to smell like fried food after leaving the restaurant, so we had to change it to a better seating area. - The food was just okay. I got the Brick & Brine Burger, and it was burned--even though I specifically asked for it to be cooked medium well. - It's my birthday; I would've appreciated having a professional waiter or waitress, not someone in training. It was super frustrating to have two waiters constantly checking on us! - The restaurant called us to apologize, but their apology didn't feel sincere. Instead, they blamed us for requesting a table change, claiming that's why the note about having a candle was lost. The whole restaurant knew it was my birthday! What kind of apology blames the customer instead of owning up to mistakes? I once went to Red Lobster, and for their apology, they gave me a $60 gift card! - They didn't even bother to offer a complimentary birthday cake. Almost every other restaurant has been doing that for years! Overall: It's a nice, clean restaurant with smiling staff and okay food, but beyond that, having your meal at home is far more worth your time.
