I work right next door from here and I love the convenience of calling and ordering my food for take out as their fries are great and let's be real their homemade ranch is Devine!! If you are a sauce person this is the place to go as they make a majority of their own sauces. The waitress was a wonder. There were plenty of customers and she was by herself waiting tables. She was cheerful and neighborly. I saw her catch her own mistake and go out of her way to make things right. We chatted about the soup special and she asked the kitchen about our wonderings for me. Speaking of the soup, chorizo and cubes of white potato in a broth that had some pumpkin purée stirred in it. The presentation was so good--dollop of sour cream and fried tortilla points. If you are ever eating here and they have pumpkin chorizo soup offered, order it! So yummy! read more

My friends and I ordered ribeye steaks, and they were delicious. Each steak was cooked right, and the garlic potatoes complimented the steaks. The meal came with corn on the cob, which Iowa boys love. The atmosphere was perfect, and we ended up staying there for hours drinking beers and telling stories. Anamosa is a great, small city in the heart of Iowa. I love the fact that this city is investing in a beautiful downtown area with a variety of merchants, charm and (during the holiday season) piped in Christmas music to accompany your stroll. Tyler & Downing's (known as T & D's to the locals) is one of the reasons why you should visit Anamosa. Check out the pictures of the old grocery store that was founded by the current owner's great grandfather and you will see why T & D's is A-OK! Converted into a restaurant in 2004, the history of this building is still felt, with modern feel for the restaurant decor. The bar selection is decent, but could be improved. My recommendation would be to have at least two bottles of wine that you would not find in HyVee on the $10 or less rack. Not being a snob here, but having enjoyed good wine vs. cheap wine, I would be willing to pay for the good stuff with a good meal. That leads me to the very tasty $24 prime rib dinner I enjoyed. The cut was about 14 oz. and very tasty. I prefer my prime rib medium-rare, which means some juice but not raw. If I were to repeat my order in the future, I would order rare. It was just a bit too dry otherwise. Complimented with grilled zucchini and a baked potato, the meal was overall good. My friend had the pesto pasta and unfortunately, did not enjoy it. Ate here after hiking throughout Maquoketa Caves State Park on our way to another hike and it was a pleasant surprise! Definitely try the apple wood smoked wings, cod sandwich, coleslaw, and homemade soup. Had great service, clean eatery, and food was well worth it. Tyler & Downing's is unique. It once was a grocery store and meat market. The interior is decorated with memorabilia from when it was a grocery store. It looks very inviting. There is a bar and it appears to be stocked with a variety of Iowa brewed beers and other hard liquor. While there I ordered a 1/2lbs hamburger and the onion straws for dinner. The burger tasted great and so did the onion straws which were more like onion rings. Others in my party ordered the flat bread pizza which were really medium sized pizza's. I sampled several pieces of pizza and found it to taste good. My rating is mainly for the burger. The only issue I had while there is that service was slow. Otherwise I would recommend going there when in Anamosa. read more

Once a butcher shop and grocery store, the owners have kept the building's history and charm while converting it into a high-class affair. The exposed brick walls, stamped tin ceiling and long, narrow space remind me of The Pepper Sprout in downtown Dubuque. The menu focuses on traditional steak and seafood entrees. Service was slow at first, but picked up once the waitress came around. The highlight of my meal was a large slice of chocolate cake - a rich, moist piece of heaven. This place was awesome! Walked in with a couple of guests for lunch today. We were a little skeptical when we walked in and the owner said, "I am the waitress, cook, cashier, and floor entertainment!" Apparently, his staff (of 1) didn't make it in today. We had time, so we decided to stay. I ordered the wings with buffalo sauce and blue cheese, and a cup of Tuscan soup. The soup was amazing! When I took my first bit of a wing, I pushed the blue cheese and buffalo sauce to the side. These wings really are SMOKED! They tasted so good I didn't need anything with them! Finally, if you get the chance to eat lunch here on a Wednesday, do it! There's a group of local ladies that were there for lunch and ended up serving us with jokes and a smile! Aside from terrible service you also get over priced mediocre food. I can't really describe in words how bad our service was but I'll try. The waitress took our order, steak with a side of potatoes for me, soup and salad for her and a homemade kids pizza for her son. Simple right? She brought out our salads, so far so good, 45 minutes later comes her sons pizza. Then a side of potatoes for me. Finally after an hour and a lot of confusion I asked our waitress were the rest of our meal was. She said she didn't know and would check. It turns out she never put the rest of our order in! After having several pleasurable experiences in the past (and not having been there in several years) a group of us decided to try Tyler and Downing's out for New Years Eve...... BIG MISTAKE First after trying to order a Heineken the waitress came back and informed us that "they either don't carry or are out of Heineken".... Really, you don't know this? Which is it? Then we were brought a warm bottle of wine and when asked about it we were told "well what do you want to do, it is the last bottle of that we have". We had to ask for an ice bucket twice, before that was brought out. Then on to dinner.., two of us ordered the petite filet and two ordered the bigger 8oz filet. We were all brought the petite filet. When we questioned the waitress she looked at her order sheet (which it appeared was a book from as much as she was writing) we were told we all ordered petite filets. I immediately asked to talk to a manager and he waitress huffed and rolled her eyes and marched away. About 5 minutes a later a person came over and introduced herself as "not the manager but someone who helps out here sometimes" and apologized and offered our drinks for free. She later told us that the owner was very sorry and actually approved the free drinks (our assumption is that meant the owner was there????? Maybe they could have came over and talked to us). Needless to say our waitress never came back, we did choke down badly cooked steaks (WAY OVERDONE) and gummy mashed potatoes and promptly left. Needless to say it was an unpleasant dining experience that was a combination of bad food, warm drinks, and very poor "unpolished" wait staff. WE WILL NOT BE BACK. read more

Very disappointing and a royal ripoff. We had lunch there today. I am on a low carb diet and tried to order their sirloin that comes with veggies and rice or potato for $13. After 20 minutes the server informs me that they don't serve any of the steaks at lunch. So I order a cheeseburger, no bun, no fries, no cole slaw and asked if I could substitute a side salad. The salad was iceberg lettuce, white onion, a couple slices of a cucumber and a teaspoon of craisins. When the bill came the total was $15.89 & I drank water. My friend ordered their garden salad and was equally disappointed as it was a big bowl of pale iceberg and a tough chicken breast on top...which she didn't eat due to feeling it was under cooked. I couldn't believe almost $16 for a hamburger patty, 1 slice of cheese and one small bowl of iceberg lettuce! It cost more than the steak I couldn't get! read more

We've rarely been treated so rudely by a restaurant! We decided to see if we could get in on Valentines Day. We went early hoping to get a table. When we came in the place only had a few tables filled. The hostess/waitress seated us immediately. However, she was new and obviously the manager did give her even the most basic training. She didn't know what the specials were or what beers they had on tap. After getting that sorted out an placing our order, the manager came over and said if we didn't have a reservation we'd have to leave! We were completed shocked! After the most insincere "sorry" we've ever gotten he just kicked us out. He didn't make even the slightest effort to try and make up for it. We'll not be returning there again. This is the kind of storefront restaurant you'd hope to find in every small Iowa county seat town, but usually don't. It has a touch of elegance, but also a casual and intimate serving bar area upstairs. The menu has a little something for everybody, and while the service isn't too peppy it is quite adequate. Not real vegetarian-friendly, but there's enough. Don't miss the vintage pull-chain loos in the upstairs water closet and the electric bug gate that once graced the back door when the building was a butcher shop operated by his grandparents. read more

Tyler and Downing's is one of Anamosa's premier upscale restaurants. The place used to be a grocery store, and the owner's have kept the original look of the building to provide for a unique atmosphere. While the menu has nothing really innovative, everything they offer is delicious. Their signature Chicken Parmesan is well worth the price tag, and the Tuscan soup is some of the best soup I have had in a long time. Their desserts are also top notch. The best thing about my visit was the service. The waitress who served us was absolutely outstanding. From her intimate knowledge of the menu, to her very helpful and cheerful attitude, she made the experience that much better for my group. The only problem I had was that some of the foods didn't taste what I expected them to taste like, but that comes from my taste preference, and not from any inability in the kitchen. If you think you can only get high class food in a big city, let Tyler and Downing's prove you wrong; you'll be glad you did. read more

Did not expect to find such a great restaurant in a town the size of Anamosa. We went for dinner on a Thursday night and Lenny suggested we try the special kabobs. Wow!! I don't usually expect great meat or vegetables on a kabob, but I was very pleasantly surprised. We had the steak (amazing tender and succulent prime beef) and the combo pork and chicken. Both were accompanied by a skewer of the best grilled vegetables we had ever tasted. Set in an old grocery store, this restaurant provides what is often hard to find in a big city....Great food and a warm inviting dining experience. We started the evening thinking the resturant opened at 3:30 as the web site states..and dinner at 4.Had a party of 8 and they don't open until 4 with dinner starting at 5 even thought the signs stating happy hour starts at 3:30 were all over the place.Our food from ribs to the steak special were not hot as well as the vegies and the potato wedges from one plate were well done..we couldn't send back the whole table of food..the service was excellent and the decor was beautiful..first impression was Wow...but,the food just was not what it should have been for such a nice resturant.I would never go back..but,the dessert was yummy. read more

Best burger in town! We usually go upstairs to the bar which is fun and funky and comfortable. Thick generous burgers and great fries. Ask for extra pickles. Also excellent (hand-cut) tenderloins--salads are great. Good prices. There are usually some specials that are a little more pricey but highly recommended by my fussy foodie husband. Our go-to for a "lets go out and have a great bite." The downstairs dining room is a bit stuffier, but is undergoing renovation and should be a fun place to get great basics with a big of upscale for those who want that--I think they are planning some music too--will update when the room reopens. read more
