My family loves shawarma and we eat shawarma all the time. We have our usual places (Shawarma Chef, Garlic King, and Shawarma Prince) but we wanted to try something new, so we tried Tyros. It was ok, but all things considered, I don't think it will be in our regular rotation.
We got the Family Platter, which is $39.99, but you have to pay an extra $2 "deposit" for the plastic platter they serve it to you on. Environmentally friendly, yes, but if you don't plan on going back then you essentially bought the plastic plate for $2. The "Family Platter" came with rice, potatoes, chicken shawarma (if you want mixed chicken and donair you have to pay and extra $2), fattouche, tabbouleh, some pickled vegetables, hummus, garlic sauce and a bag of pitas.
The potatoes and rice are not in heated serving platters. They are cold and staff microwave them before putting them on the platter. The potatoes were microwaved in a glass pot (acceptable) but the rice was microwaved in a plastic bowl (unacceptable in my books, but at least they did not microwave it in Styrofoam like they do at King Shawarma!).
The fattouche was pre-dressed in the big serving platters (so I don't know how long it was sitting around all wet in dressing for). It did not come with pita chips :( However, it had lots of different vegetables in it in addition to the romaine lettuce (red, orange, yellow and green bell peppers, tomatoes, onions and cucumbers).
You only get 2 tiny Solo Cups of garlic sauce (you can see in my picture). A little stingy in my opinion. However, the garlic sauce was delicious! It was so fluffy, almost like a meringue and didn't taste greasy/oily like at some places. It was one of the best garlic sauces I've ever tasted.
The chicken was good. Some people might think it's a bit dry, but I like it on the dry side. I also love the crispy pieces. The rice was fluffy and tasty and not oily at all (my big complaint about rice at shawarma places is that it's usually so oily, so I was happy that it wasn't oily at Tyros). The potatoes had a definite cumin aroma to it. I like cumin, so I didn't mind. Just be aware if you don't like cumin! They were not crispy though, so points off for that.
The hummus was smooth and was ok (not too sour). They let you pick your own bag of pita (which I appreciated. I have to say, I was a bit pissed at our usual shawarma joint - Shawarma Chef, for giving us pitas that expired the next day and were already man-handled and cut up for sandwiches during our last visit, which is one of the reasons we set out to try new places, but I digress).
The amount of food you get in this Family Platter is less than Family Platters at other shawarma places in the same price range, so I was a bit disappointed with that.
Service was great. They were really friendly. The place is also a convenience store.
This place is on Jeanne d'Arc and to get there you have to pass through at least 1 roundabout (not a traffic circle, but a legit roundabout with multiple lanes, and people going all sorts of directions, people in the inner lanes exiting and people in the outer lanes not exiting and it's just too much for me!). For me, a business has to really impress me for me to endure a roundabout to get to it, lol. Tyros has some definite positives: non-oily rice, tasty garlic sauce, pick your own pita bag, friendly staff, etc. but it has some negatives too: so little garlic sauce, non-crispy potatoes, no pita chips, small portions, no hot peppers, etc. So all in all, we probably will not become regulars.
It's in a strip mall (it's next to Bien Pho). There's lots of free parking. read more
