Given the concept of Asian-Mexican fusion, I was intrigued to try it. Service: The lady who took my order was very efficient. They also churn out orders quickly; I'd estimate my wait time was less than 5 minutes during lunch hour. Food: For $9, I was pleased to get two meals out of it. This offset the fact that the only flavors originated from the sauces and garnishes, since the rice, tofu, and veggies were not seasoned at all. The variety and state of the veggies was also perplexing. I didn't expect raw carrot, cucumber, edamame, and chickpeas...what's even more interesting is the carrots and cucumber were julienned and because they were uncooked, stuck straight out like toothpicks on my fork. The carrots added quite the crunch. I hope they consider marinating/breading the tofu in the future, because the lack of flavor from them was just sad. The chipotle(?) mayo and sweet Thai chili sauce complemented each other, but with no other flavorings, the dish fell flat. Their Thai tea is tasty, not too sweet, and very reasonably priced at $3. As a vegetarian, I was disappointed by the lack of vision with this dish. I hope they consider workshopping it because I'd like to support them - but for now, I'll avoid them. There were some really fresh toppings on my bahn mi, but the pork was not what I was expecting for a bahn mi. Although pork quality wasn't there, there were some good parts to it. There are some fusion toppings on it so it's not just your straightforward Vietnamese roll, but it had the spice level and flavor that I remembered from the spicy mayo and pickled cabbage all topped on a pretty solid, light yet strong roll. This clearly should be on everyone's must stop list when it comes to a Night market event, or if seen in the city. These guys are legit, seriously they have some great combinations coming out of this truck. The O.G. dog is a grilled hot dog with short ribs that is covered with some shredded red cabbage over top with an aioli making it even better. All of this goodness on a roll, not an ordinary roll mind you, it was stacked and packed on a 6 inch roll that could barely hold everything in. Should be more like the "O.M.G. dog, and you should get it. They also have an amazing and refreshingly good Thai tea that needs to find its way in your hands. I have eaten here a few times when I'm on Penn campus. The food seems to lose flavors over time. I usually get the Korean beef tacos with Thai iced tea. For the most part, the food was legit, even though the meat is very little. One of the things I love about tacos is that, you have a lot of food packed between a small tortilla, so you get such big flavor in a small bite. Tyson Bees double stacked their tortilla and gave very little meat so you ended up tasting more flour than protein. With that said however, Tyson Bees is still a staple at UPenn and I will probably continue to buy food from here. The reason why I had to give a lower star is because of the last time I was here. I ordered Thai iced tea and for some reason, it was so bad that day. The tea tasted like left over tea someone drank and the ice melted out. I couldn't finish it, it was bland. However, as much as I wanted to really like the food, I was disappointed by the fact that their KBBQ short rib + kimchi burrito ($5!) was really 90% white rice with purple cabbage, and maybe 10% short rib and a few pieces here and there of kimchi. On my second trip I noticed something called a Tofu Wrap" on the menu. It promptly became my standard go-to for dinner before class. The wrap has simply grilled tofu, white rice (yeah, I know, I wish it was brown) diced carrots and an irresistible and quite spicy aioli that I can't stop thinking about for long stretches at a time. Absolutely delicious and a nice filling but not too guilty dinner. Be careful though: they close at 4ish every day. I ordered the jungle curry, which consisted of grilled slabs of tofu over rice with curry over top, and sides of kimchi and a bean salad. The kimchi was not to my tasting, but according to those who do enjoy it, the kimchi is good. The bean salad was alright, a little bland but it was clearly fresh and still quite good. The star of this though was the.tofu curry. My lord. Phenomenal. The tofu was not dried out and old, rice was obviously not left out from the night before. And the sauce, awesome. It had the perfect combination of sweet, garlic, and spice. And coming from.someone who can't get enough garlic, that's saying something. The overall size of the meal was on the large side. I have been the original Tyson Bees greatest supporter when Chef Tyson Ophaso and crew were operating it and its greatest critic when they left. My Facebook comments about the post-Ophaso food were so harsh that I saw the new crew pointing at me and whispering things about me and my Facebook messages. When the original crew left, something happened. The quality went down considerably. The rice was not evenly cooked and the curries were too salty. I can accept an almost-version of the original rice dishes at $1 cheaper, but at the time of the transition and for a year or so afterwards, it just wasn't up to par. Slowly, but surely, the truck rebuilt my confidence in its food. If you have the original recipes and the experience to tweak what's wrong with the outcome, you will eventually do better. I like the Korean BBQ burritos. They're always good. This week's curry of the week addressed my two issues and did so gloriously. Let me say that I'm a harsh judge of Asian cuisine, especially Thai-based cuisine. I feel that Tyson Bees finally got it right. More water in the rice makes it sticky, which is better than uncooked. I feel that washing the rice might make it better. I like the flavor of today's curry. I have no idea what it is. They could've made it up. Is it red or penang? I don't know. I just know it's got a lot of nice notes of flavor in it and a hint of spice to make it nice yet accessible to the masses. A well-spent $6. Congrats, new-Tyson Bees and keep up the good work! In a parking lot filled with six or seven food carts/trucks, Tyson Bees is definitely the most noticeable truck and probably has the most interesting type of food too (the others are your standard Chinese, Middle Eastern, and sandwich carts). I've only tried the Korean BBQ short rib beef & kimchi burrito (beef, kimchi, rice, spicy mayo, and a bit of cilantro) which is a decent and filling lunch for $5. I just didn't like that there was so much rice and that the rice was so mushy. Pluses: they also have vegetarian-friendly dishes like tofu wraps. Super cute food truck! We sampled the Korean BBQ Short Rib Beef Taco, Thai Basil Chicken Taco, and the pork buns. The Korean short rib taco wasn't what I had expected. I've had tons of Korean BBQ (yay Korean bf) and i had an image of what i was about to get. I was a bit disappointed to see these itty bitty chopped pieces of meat. But with the lime, the flavors worked well together. The spicy sauce was a bit spicy for me! The Thai basil chicken had more flavor than the short rib but I didn't enjoy the overly basil taste. The pork buns were probably my favorite of the bunch. Not the best pork buns ever (mine was a bit dry and not fatty enough) but for only $3, it's decent enough to suppress a craving. read more

I work in Rittenhouse so it's basically impossible for me to enjoy the food trucks in University City unless I take a super long lunch. I in fact plan to take a day off one day and just wander around eating, but I digress. Walking around, trying to decide what to eat at the PIFA street fair, right at Chestnut street I stumbled upon the Tyson Bees food truck. Needless to say I was ecstatic and happy to wait in the line to finally try this place. I was with a friend and we got the korean pork bbq tacos, the thai chicken, and one pork bun. All of it was delicious. The bun was my favorite, with the thai chicken being second. It had a really nice spiciness to it. The Grilled BBQ Lemongrass Pork Bahn Mi sandwich is very flavorful (slightly spicy) and very colorful. The portion is reasonable for $5 but definitely not as big as other sandwiches from other food trucks nearby on Spruce. The Korean BBQ Short Rib Beef & Kimchi Burrito for $5 is slightly disappointing. Most of the burrito's size is comprised of white rice, the meat was very hidden if there was any. ok, i'm a believer. i usually swear off food trucks, but this one is actually GOOD. i never bought into the whole kogi tacos when it first took off in LA. so my go-to item on the menu here is usually the jungle stew curry or the curry of the week. portions are large, easily doubling the amount of meat offered by the other asian food trucks within a two block radius. it can be a little pricier than other food trucks (ie. $5-7), but it doesn't taste like a bunch of msg poured over rice. and when they say something is spicy, it really IS spicy! how refreshing. tyson bees does a better job than most restaurants that claim they serve spicy food. read more

After my office moved further West, I was concerned that I'd never make the 20 minute jaunt to 33rd and Spruce, but I was also determined to hit it up. Recent news that it was under new management had me concerned. I planned a lunch with a coworker to make the trip down Spruce and investigate the "newly" managed truck. I showed up a little before 12, to beat the lines that I had witnessed before, and we had no wait. I ordered one chicken basil Thai taco and one pork bun. I liked the 9 of spades that they handed me as my "number;" it was a cute touch. I didn't like the syrofoam containers they served the food in. Come on, Philly food trucks, let's get green! I personally think there should be a tax break for food trucks that use paper/compostable containers as it will just encourage greener behaviors. Just sayin. Anyway, on to the main event: the food. I dove into the pork "bun" first, which was a pillowy, round piece of bread (?), on top of which was a flavorful but tiny piece of pork, some scallions, cilantro, and perhaps some other stuff too. I didn't deconstruct it to much because I was too busy inhaling the delectable thing. It wasn't spicy at all, but very flavorful. The taco was a little spicy, but nothing I couldn't handle (I am a lightweight, FYI). It was served with a delicious sauce, some fresh basil leaves, cabbage and a few slices of radish. It was fantastic. I think I liked the pork bun a little more, but the taco was the healthier morsel. Had I been any hungrier, I would have either ordered a third option, or brought along an apple as one taco and one pork "bun" would not be enough to sustain me. I will definitely be back. Penn Students are still ordering iced coffee and tea (its good, but I'm pretty sure the secret is condensed milk and I just can't justify.). I'd rather spend my money on the pork buns. I just learned that this truck is now closed citing a management transition. The first time I went I wanted to try something new. I got curry of the week. It was delicious as expected, but as time went on $4 curry went up to $5. When I asked what was up with that, the server said vegetables were getting expensive adding a quick "but you're still here and you're still buying it!!" he sounded too cocky and made me feel like I it was a challenge so I never went back. I did, however check the menu a while after that... it was $7 for the same dish. Too much to spend daily for lunch. Perhaps good as a treat, but not daily. I know people love a nice new shiny truck, but seriously, try the silvery truck right next door, get the Singapore noodles, they're delicious. They used to have a $6 meal (chicken with rice, later raised the price to $7)which is pretty good, and the burrito was great. I dreamt about this dish. New Management: tofu steaks with sloppy watery curry sauce that totally soaked into the rice so there's no relief from the heat, and a few edemame and chickpeas are sprinkled through.
