This was one hell of a place.
During my recent European adventure I saw my share of eccentric restaurants. Some, like the Machfelderhof in the outskirts of Vienna, were just completely insane. Others were rather sublime. This place fits in the "not-quite demented" but still "memorable" category in terms of the decor and overall experience.
To some, once you walk in you're treated to a feast of sight and sound. There is music playing thanks to the piano player and there are tons of old relics and references to the history of the Czech people. To others, it feels like you walked into a crazy antique shop that's full of old shit .. which happens to serve food. Let's just say if you like old stuff, you will be pleasantly surprised here.
Now ... as for the actual meal ... the food they serve here was just ok. While I have photos of what I ate, I actually literally have no memory of how good/bad the food tasted. Maybe it's because I drank a ton of Czech beer when I was dining here but the fact that I ate a cheese plate, some pork loin dish with sauce and potates and some ice cream dessert and remember nothing special about it ... that's probably not a ringing endorsement. However, I can honestly say while the food didn't stand out, the cozy and somewhat crazy ambiance definitely was unforgettable.
I would say if you're looking to eat amazing food, this might not be the place to go. But if you're looking to have a wonderful evening with friends at a pretty cool place, you probably can't go wrong here, even if the service was spotty and can be brusque at times. read more
