Apartment was unclean when I moved in (don't understand why there is a cleaning fee). I was promised a room, but I was picked the smallest room. I was the first person to sign the lease. Do NOT live here. Please avoid. I lived for a few months and moved out quickly! They're so unprofessional! Firstly, there were MANY BUGS if you love bugs, ants, and coach roaches then sure live here. On top of that there was mold as well and the carpet had stains when we moved in. My roommates and I asked for them to fix it, we sent in work orders! Never fixed it. Considering the fact tenants have to pay for a "cleaning fee" at the beginning of rental, there should NOT be mold, bug infestations, or stains in the apartment complex! Our apartment had so many things that needed to be fixed. There were several major leaks, kitchen burners were constantly not working, and light fixture malfunctioned. - A bullet came whizzing in from a drive-by shooting on I5 through a window, 2 walls and a closet door to embed itself in my friend's bedroom wall. And people were home. - They had to rip the carpet from the elevator because it smelled like eternal piss and replace it with hardwood flooring. - The wraparound indoor walkway on all the floors is cool in terms of aesthetics, giving you a "this looks like a rustic log cabin" feel. But not cool in terms of drunkards, smokers and loud party-goers being able to congregate RIGHT OUTSIDE YOUR WINDOW to project at the top of their lungs! I seriously thought of buying a broomstick and brandishing it old-lady style to "sweep" them out of ear-shot. There are some pluses, hence the 2 stars. The location is close enough to walk to the Burke and catch most major buses and even venture into Wallingford. The apt itself isn't that bad, coin-operated laundry, a vending machine and places to park your bikes in the garage. This all happened within a year. No thank you, never again. read more

My experience living at Apex only went downhill. The apartment was DIRTY when I moved in, I don't understand why there was a cleaning fee. Honestly just another one of Apex's many scams to get more money. I moved in and the bathroom door didn't close and we had ANTS twice within the first month. My packages were constantly STOLEN without any sympathy from management. They tell me that they "tell the carriers to use the package lockers, but the carriers don't" it's because the screen did not turn on until January (5 months after moving in), so really it was because they couldn't. The water immediately turned FREEZING when someone turns on the sink for .5 seconds. The window in my room wasn't even the correct size for the hole it's in so it had the worst insulation. They leaked every night and caused MOLD to grow all along the windowsill during winter. Don't be fooled by their listing photos. All units we saw had microwaves in them. Ours did not and we had to buy one. Many bedroom windows face towards the hallways in the complex so people can see in them. Hope you never wanted to open your blinds! The doors on the cabinets hang crooked. The bottom of one of the drawers falls out if you put more than ~ 2 wooden cooking spoons in it. One of our living room windows didn't have a screen in it the whole time. We can't open it to get air when the apartment turns into a literal oven because of all the BUGS that fly in that are attracted by the massive pile of trash that's constantly outside. Honestly the exterior is one of the nastiest in U District and that's saying something. The dumpsters are constantly overflowing, causing putrid smelling trash to go all over the walkway and even the stairs sometimes. When you're walking in the front door or in the garage you're attacked by a swarm of flies there because of the trash. And somehow each person is charged upwards of $17 a month for this? One month past 2018 and if I wanted to park my car there which I need for my job, surprise, the costs have gone up $10! Who increases rates in the middle of a lease, why not just wait until the end of august when everyone's lease expires. Many cars have been BROKEN INTO under the garage and somehow I must pay more for this added feature of theft? Every month our utility bill goes up a little bit more because we also have to pay the fee for Apex using a third party to send us our utility fees. With 3 people in my apartment that's a combined $15 "convenience" fee that is only a convenience to Apex, not its residents. Their washing machines hardly wash, and there were numerous instances where my clothes would come out with BLEACH STAINS despite me never using bleach on my clothes. One day our CEILING STARTED LEAKING and front desk lady could not care less. Took 12+ hours for them to come out and fix it. We spent many days with a giant rectangle hole in our ceiling. Turns out it was because the pipes were all rusted and started leaking. Which is also the case for under our sink. Elevator was broken for 2 weeks then they're like "oh we can't fix it for another 8 weeks" TEN WEEKS with NO ELEVATOR. Then they had the audacity to send out an email telling people that were moving out to make sure they removed their furniture otherwise they'll get fined. Maybe if you fixed the elevator so they didn't have to haul furniture down 5 flights of narrow stairs then it wouldn't be an issue. When we moved out - surprise - the elevator wasn't working still. I was emailed a utility bill on August 14th which said that the bill was due that day, August 14th. I didn't pay that day and got a $5 late fee each day. But by law in Seattle you are legally allowed to have 30 days from receipt to pay, and also for utility bills they are not allowed to charge more than $5/month + 1% interest. Broke 2 Seattle laws right there. I called and straightened it out but I feel bad for the residents that didn't know this was an ILLEGAL practice. Apex is poorly managed and the fact that they begged their current residents to renew their leases is testament to that and the conditions of the apartment. read more

The ONLY 3+ star rating sounds extremely fishy and made up by management or someone work affiliated with these apartments. I'm not sure who they're fooling but they are not fooling me. Hence, I give them 1 star for the type of sleaziness they're willing to do just for a mediocre Yelp rating. As for a more helpful review. I have not lived at these apartments, I only know friends who have lived here. They've told me the nightmares they've been through with management. One good friend of mine had to pay an immense $300 fee just because he wanted to sublet his apartment to someone else since he wasn't going to stay for Spring or Summer. As for maintenance, it was pretty horrid. I had to help the same friend clean his laundry at MY apartment two blocks away because the machines wouldn't work properly at the Apex and he can thank the useless management for that. You can believe me or not, but I suggest you go ask one of the current tenants for their opinion, I feel like that is the best way to get to know the living situation at the Apex. Make sure not to break any laws or creep anyone out in doing so. read more

For near campus housing, this place isn't bad. It's normally quiet. It's safe. It's close to campus, has ample windows. And for 2 - 3 bedroom apartments, Apex has some of the more spacious price-worthy living arrangements. They are undergoing management change now, which is going to apparently put in an actual bike room (YAY!) and update washers and dryers. The management could be a bit more on top of their shit, by a bit. We have a closet door and a light that have been acting a bit funky, but now that they established an online maintenance order system, we're optimistic about their fixing. But since you rarely (hopefully) need to interact with them, it's not too much of a burden. All rent / utilities are paid online, so that's convenient, and the website is a breeze to use. It's a 7 min bike ride to the center of campus (when lights are good), about a 14 min walk. And keep in mind this is a campus that takes 15 min to walk across... Two blocks away from the Burke Gillman, and super close to Portage Bay Cafe (which is all anyone needs to survive). As for the kitchen, the cabinets aren't carefully made, so some doors are a bit quirky, but they look decent (read: not terribly tacky like nearly every other apartment complex in U district). It's a bit crowded and narrow, but the ample storage makes up for it. They have garbage disposal and good compost/recycling. No dishwashers though. If you're looking for a solid place to live, definitely don't cross this place out. It's affordable, comfortable, and convenient. It's not glamorous, but yo- if you're in college, it doesn't need to be. It gets the job done, and I've been entirely satisfied. read more

Apex is not the newest or most luxury place in U-district, but in my opinion, it's one of the best options for convenient and affordable living for students. Apartments are quite spacious, and cozy. Yes, the building might be a bit old, and sometimes you would face some issues with plumbing or thin walls, but what I really enjoy about this place is their management. They have a 24-hour maintenance, and if you have a ceiling leak in the middle of the night, they will send a technician to your unit to fix it. Once my kitchen sink got clogged and water was rising. I called the maintenance, but nobody was replying. Since it was an emergency, I called the outside plumbing services. They charged me a lot more that I expected, and I had to pay out of my pocket, and got really frustrated because at that time I just moved into my apartment and barely used the kitchen sink, so apparently the problem was there before. I contacted the leasing office and sent them the receipts from the plumbing services, and they gave me a full refund which was really nice. They are also very friendly. The only downside is that my apartment is located by the main door. And people would knock on my window if they don't have keys (5am, seriously). Also, walls are very thin, and sometimes I would hear a couple fighting outside. But that's the only thing. Overall, this place should definitely be taken into consideration. read more

*****WARNING****PARENTS*****WARNING 5 The term "Student Housing" is misleading at best. My son is under 21 and a transfer student and his first roommate is under 21 and a new, incoming student. The other roommate is a 40ish male that isn't a student at the university. That seems off that a grown man would want to be housed with young students, and that Apex on their website gives parents the impression that this is "Student Housing" (their term). Nowhere in the website does it state that you could be sending your son or daughter to go and live with an adult, that isn't s student, that they don't know or have anything in common with. False advertising, misleading advertising. You take away our choice. If this information would have been known, that Apex Student Housing will rent to anyone, student or not, that qualifies through the application process, maybe we, my student and I, might have chosen another option for housing. You (Apex) took that option away by not discIlosing your policies on renting, and especially that "Student Housing" isn't truly your intention, and that the true intentions of Apex and "U District Student Housing" is to ren't rooms to anyone, and not only students, regardless of how that affects the students experience. Fraud is the word that comes mind, regardless of legalities, it's false and misleading advertising at the least. read more

-The dryers on two out of four floors don't work. It's never taken me less than 4 hours to do laundry because the entire building is sharing two laundry rooms instead of four. -We experienced a major ant problem in our apartment as soon as we moved in. -our ceiling creaks whenever someone crosses the room upstairs. The entire apartment complex needs a major renovation and needs to work on its maintenance ASAP. The 2nd floor dryer hasn't worked for the last 4 months and has a "Broken" sign on it and has still been left unattended to. The management is terrible. I lived at Apex for a year and was due to renew my lease. Management called me and told me to renew or move out since a potential tenant placed an application in for my current unit. So I went ahead and signed all 14 or so pages of the lease and they claimed they never received it. Truth is, they don't train anyone properly and misplaced my lease. They had move to another unit and pay all fees associated making the process painful. They have misplaced my paperwork several times and have no idea how to run an apartment building. Two stars for convenient location and nice appearance. However, the absolute worst management ever! I asked for a screen for my bedroom window and they told me it would be coming out of my security deposit. 10 months later..still no screen. They also stole a months worth of rent money when I first moved in and was paying for the next month early simply because the money was there. So if you do decide to live here NEVER PAY RENT EARLY. And don't get me started on the washers and dryers. They are very outdated and are never cleaned. They have taken my quarters without running many,many times. The dryers rarely dry clothes the first time around (even if you don't put a lot in them) and will sometimes leave clothes completely soaked. If you tell management about this, they just tell you to submit a maintenance request online but they do not post signs on the broken washer/dryer so other people know not to use it. They do have time, however, to post violation notices on your car because you are not parked in " your" spot. They make you tandem park even with dozens of parking spots available. read more

For the apartment itself, beware of the dark windows in most units, it will definitely cause DEPRESSION. And if your unit faces the highway, then good luck. The thing that really irritated me is that they charged us a fee that they shouldn't, and they didn't even respond to my argument. When we move in, there's a deep scratch on the bathroom floor, we reported it to the management. But no one ever came to fix it. Because it didn't interfere with our life we did not pay attention to it anymore. When we moved out, they charged us a total of 240 USD. And more irritating, their letter used very strong and unfriendly language to ask us not to call but email their manager, we emailed but nothing came back. They should at least check with our damage report in the first place, and it seems like they are gonna keeping charging the next tenant this fee, once a year. I would give minus 5 stars if I could. The reasons are plentiful, but the biggest one amongst them is the *management* or rather *mis-management* I should say. The management people are very hard to reach on phone; at times, I've had an appointment with them, traveled all the way over to the management office, only to find it locked! Ok, this was the simplest of all problems. The management keeps sending invoices for bills --- but dont let the dates on the bills fool you. We paid the bills on time, only to find out that the management had "conveniently applied" some of that money towards paying off bills for the previous month, when we had not even yet moved in!! They send invoices about utilities, (water, wastewater, etc.), and parking. We paid for each of these separately, with the exact purpose and dates on our checks, only to have the management again randomly re-assign the money that we paid to pay off other "bills"---and then to send us yet another invoice to pay for something that we had already paid for. We are literally totally bamboozled by the extreme incompetence of this whole show, and cannot wait to get the hell out of this place. I subleased an apartment from Pacific Sunrise during the summer of 2017. On my first day being there, I realized that I had made a huge mistake. As I walked in, I instantly realized my new roommates were extremely dirty and that I should call management to do something about what I had walked into. Unfortunately, on my first day in the apartment, I was told that I should help clean and since I had already signed the paperwork, they couldn't do anything. In fact, the direct words I received were "We can't make people be clean." So for the next three months, I was pretty much living in this disgusting apartment in which I had to go elsewhere to shower, constantly use fragrances to block smells, and deal with almost daily construction noises. Then, after move-out, I received the dreaded letter that the apartment was so damaged (aka dirty) that they had to replace the carpet and stove drip pans. My deposit is not enough to cover this so now I am coming out of pocket to pay for the "damages." I am not sure how accommodating this place is for those who are simply "leasing," but if you are subleasing, I say STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE! read more

We have lived here for at least a year. The staff is great, helpful, and super friendly. It's in a great location for UW Students. It's close to the freeway and is in walking distance to everything. I love how big the bedrooms are and how quickly maintenance takes care of maintenance issues. I have only lived in these apartments and I am planning to renew my lease with them for next year!! This has been (by far) the worst living experience EVER! I too, was sold on the security cameras in the parking garage, only to find out they are fake. My car was broken into over the summer....along with 4 or 5 other cars at the same time and nothing was ever done to find out who did it. My neighbors were wanna be gangster rappers.... lmao. They suck so bad! If they had any talent, I would have been fine with it..... but it was just loud crappy music and parties nonstop! I used to see them going over to the managers apartment (312) nonstop, so I'm assuming they are buddies. Not to mention there seem to be a lot of other trashy people going in and out. Looked like some tore up strippers???? Nasty, nasty, nasty.... it was like living in the ghetto! You don't really want to see your landlord with a stripper on his arm!!! BAD FOR BUSINESS! But yes, its true. My buddy saw her dancing at Deja Vu! HAHA!!! The manager always reeked like weed and it smelled like weed BAD around his apartment all the time. not like a casual smoker... I'm 420 friendly, but he must have been growing it or something cuz the smell was way too strong! So... if you are OK with your car being broken into, your manager being not very responsible(and stoney all the time), living with a bunch of fake musicians who are loud but have no real talent, Trashy strippers, and dealing with parties all over the apartment complex in the middle of the night...this just may be the place for you! I would give this apartment building 0 stars if i was able to. Living in Apex this year has absolutely been the worst experience I've ever had. My friend and I rented a 3 bedroom apartment here with one random roommate. When we moved in, we realized the random roommate was a much much older woman. As someone said down below, Apex advertises itself as STUDENT housing, so we were expecting a UW student to be moving in. Aside from that, there have been countless problems with the managing staff. Despite their being a new management team, they are just as horrible as I imagine the last one was. They take FOREVER to fulfill work order requests. The washer/dryers on every floor ARE AWFUL. I have to dry my clothes twice or else everything will start smelling horrible. I normally just take all my clothes to my friends apartment in the Kennedy to have them washed because despite not working, they are slowly ruining my clothes. Also, the cost of the washer + dryer is about 3.50 WHICH IS ABSURD, ESPECIALLY for its quality. This winter it was also so cold in the apartment I got sick TWICE over the span of two months because even with all the heaters on max, NO heat was coming out and it was freezing everywhere in the apartment. I have several friends in the building who had the same issue with the heating. I also met someone this year who lived in Apex last year, and she said when she tried to sublease her room over the Summer, they made it immensely difficult and charged her a ridiculously huge fee. Here are just a FEW of the problems from my first day moved in: disgusting bathrooms, the poorly working appliances, the MOLD EVERYWHERE THAT HAD OBVIOUSLY BEEN PAINTED OVER AGAIN AND AGAIN, the broken heating system, the RIDICULOUS trash & random service fees, the hardwood floors that have been sticky since first moving in, the broken & overpriced washer/dryers, and the dirt & bugs all over the windows. We always turn the fan on in the bathroom to help with the mold, but the mold was there when we moved in and because of the poor heating, the mold has only grown in even more places. Lastly, in the few times I've tried to call the management office, the staff is extremely rude and obviously does not want to speak with you or hear about the numerous problems in the apartment. Of all the people in the building who live here this year, my own roommates, and those of people who used to live here(and gladly moved out) Apex is a HORRIBLE apartment with even worse staff. This place is a truly awful place to live. I can not wait to move out of here this summer. If you are looking for a place to live, I beg you to avoid Pacific Sunrise/Apex/Kelsey, ESPECIALLY if you are a UW student. It really is too much stress and you can easily find a place to live in the same price range that doesn't have such horrible living conditions/ rude staff. Living here ruined my senior year of college. I beg anyone who reads this, DO NOT LIVE HERE. There was no issue imaginable my roommates and I did not have to overcome with NO help from the landlords. The apartment FLOODED. It turns out there was an issue with the building structure and the apartment was not water proof. My entire floor was covered with water and mold. My roommates and I started considering suing Apex. Despite the horrifying living conditions we were given no money back or even moved to another apartment but instead had to endure an entire month of the apartment struggling to fix the walls to keep out the rain. In addition to floods, we had BUGS. The apartment was always crawling with ants. It seemed that no matter what insipid "we're exterminating today :)" note we found left on our door, the apartment was never free of the bugs. As if to further add to our misery, our roommates lost hundreds of dollars of food when our REFRIGERATOR BROKE. Even with the flooding costing us a safe place to sleep and live, the landlords still fought us to replace the fridge and finally gave in after over a month of our pleading to be given a decent place to live. As someone that has been living in apartments for five years, this apartment complex is definitely one of the better ones. The staff is kind and helpful and is always there for a helping hand when confused. The maintenance crew is always there in emergency situations. Their online paying program (mycarmelhome.com) is extremely convenient for paying utilities and rent whenever I feel like it rather then walking to the main office to turn in a check. For any student that goes to University of Washington, this apartment complex is close enough to walk to without any hassle! Also close to the Highway and other Seattle Neighborhoods. Guaranteed they have nice apartments- its clean and what not, but the management is probably the worst you can find in the U district. You are bound to get roped into bills and costs that you would have never imagined to pay in your entire student life. The management does all the sweet talk when you attend the open house and until you sign their lease. And right after that, they are behind you constantly to pay rent, pay utilities, hike prices, and be awfully rude to you when you run into problems. I would say, if you have a truckload of money to invest, go for it. But if you're just an average college student wanting to rent an apartment within your means, DON'T go with U District Apartments. Several break-ins of my car while parked here. Constant building-wide ant infestation. Overpriced rent. Management couldn't care less, and is extremely hard to work with. They kept my deposit and demanded that I pay them extra for carpet cleaning and painting, despite having left the apartment in great condition. They ignored my emails and voice messages for months before sending it to collections. I wouldn't recommend this place to even my worst enemy. read more
