Guaranteed pickup date for ubox dates by U-Haul in lakeville, MN, of 7/31. Sara Mau is the lakeville manager. Then they called to say 8/2. Sara would not take my calls but happily took the mankato mgr's call as I sat there. I could not hold over because my lease ended that day. I had several emails, text messages, and recorded phone calls (I recorded) guaranteeing the pickup date of 7/31. I expressed how important this was because of my lease ending, and I was assured they would be picked up that date. I received a call while driving across the country that my boxes would not be picked up that date - 7/31. Then the lakeville office said they were "working on it" and would "call me later." I turned around and drove back to mankato. The mgr at the local office, Jerome, called Sarah Mau in lakeville- who was now suddenly available to talk - and she said there was no way they could help me. No one was willing to contact a third party vendor with a flatbed truck to just pick up the boxes and have them sit at the mankato site until lakeville could come get them. Then I spoke with the mankato regional/district mgr, Christopher Bohlman, and he told me that he does not have to honor the contract pick-up date, and yelled at me. I paid thousands of dollars to have the boxes picked up and - on contract and many written (and recorded on FB e phone) conversations with corporate this would be done according to the contract. Christopher does not want to honor the contract because to do so he would have to spend money with another vendor. First U-Haul said the driver was injured, then he was sick, and they told corporate there was a mechanical issue. They told me 8/2, and told corporate 8/1 because I sat in my car and called corporate for help, and they got involved but to no avail. Christopher is a dishonest businessman, and he is rude. While on the phone with corporate, I found out that U-Haul unilaterally amended the contract today to reflect a pickup date of 8/1/26. I did not sign for this. It is highly illegal to breach a contract and then unilaterally amend its terms. If the U-Haul office signed my name - while I was in my car - we have a forgery issue. This is not how we do things in mankato. Do not trust Christopher or do business with him. read more

We were really impressed with the service at this UHaul location. We rented a truck in Rock Island, IL to move my niece to Roseville, MN. Returning the truck couldn't have been any simpler. I drove in the lot, handed off the keys and was basically done. Quick and easy. As we headed to our hotel I discovered that I had left my wallet in the truck. We called back immediately to find that they were trying to call us. A quick dash back to recover the item and we were off. The staff was professional, polite and helpful. I have dropped off one-way truck rentals here in 2 occasions. They always seem to know I'm dropping off & tell me I'm good to go & I'll get a receipt. I always expect people to ask how things were but they never have:m; seen in a hurry to get me out if their store ASAP. This time, my one-way rental had over over 75,000 miles in it which seems like they are just asking for trouble along the 2,000+ miles of the trip. Sorry to hear of the other gentleman's bad experience--go back and complain to the manager preferably during the week-- different staff, different experience.... I have used this Uhaul 8 times from 11/17-3/18 for a long long series of moves to storage and a small apt. I find that calling does not work since they get lines and can't answer the phone. For the best and most accurate service with ALL Uhaul locations I have learned you COME IN PERSON. Zero mistakes, better service and plan ahead (2 weeks minimum) for they run out of trucks fast!! There was an outstanding young African American fellow who recently moved to a better job. I am using them again now ( August through October) and already the male staff have been outstanding. I have dealt with some of the female staff and have indeed found them busy chatting to one another, emanating a sense of boredom towards this job. I suffered a horrible last minute NO show a few weeks ago with Movers Plus, a movinghelp.com team of movers. After waiting 2 hours I called the 800 number for Uhaul and was told to return the truck and equipment blankets ASAP. I drove maybe 5 miles total. The young men were great gracious at original pick up and with return. I was refunded all my money on the spot. Then they did the IMPOSSIBLE and called a live human being for me at movinghelp.com who IMMEDIATELY credited my money to my card and took my complaint about not showing up! In appreciation I returned later with the delicious Turtle Bread rolls-sandwiches I had made for the movers-- they were ecstatic. PS. I made an appointment online to have a trailer hitch installed at this location. An email was received to confirm the appointment and my credit card was charged. I showed up for the appointment to which I was told had been cancelled. No email was sent to me canceling anything. Then I was told that they don't even have a hitch tech in that day and that I should contact another location to reschedule. The other location started trying to sell me what I'd already paid for. I won't be going to any location as they all have horrible reviews. I chose Uhaul because their price was the best. I guess you get the service you pay for. read more

The customer service was horrible. No one even greeted their customers. The manager was so rude and the teller can't even do basic math as I was paying. No one was nice to me. Then they called to rush me to return the van right away because they rented it out already for another customer when I said I was going g to extend. DON'T COME HERE!! STAFF IS DISTRACTED AND RUDE. Apparently reserving a truck online means nothing to the employees here. I was allowed only two hour to use a rental truck when I specifically requested well over that amount. They claimed that even though I had a reservation, I wouldn't be able to use the truck for a reasonable amount of time! I asked if there were any other options at all but the staff was (already distracted with their own conversation) very rude and didn't even attempt to assist me. If I didn't absolutely NEED a moving service I would have never even thought of U-Haul but now I will definitely never use their services again. Never again. I had trailer wiring updated to a 7-pin plug at the Maplewood location in July, 2020. This spring, the control box failed and only some of the lights worked while my brake controller did not work at all. I took the car in to the University Ave U-Haul because it is the closest to my house that services trailer wiring. They identified the failed equipment and replaced it at my cost because it was out of service. When I returned home and hooked my trailer up all of the lights operated on the trailer but the brake controller was receiving no power. After repeated attempts to reach them by phone (they never answered no matter how long I stayed on hold) I drove over. I had to make an appointment for the next week. I took the car in this week. They were to call me when it was ready. They never did. When I went back, I was told that the wiring harness checked out. I explained again why that couldn't be and the service person (not the repair person) went out to test it. He couldn't figure out how to test it and simply repeated that the repair person had said it was fine. He didn't offer to have the repair person come out to check it again and I was too pissed off to think of asking him to. I contacted the brake controller manufacturer who confirmed that the failure to deliver power to the controller was the issue and that in his experience this was a common problem with U-Haul. I am writing this as I once again sit on hold, knowing my call will never be answered and that I will have to drive over and go through this entire process again or find someone else to fix their mistake. I have decided to contest the charge and take it elsewhere. read more

Anthony Duke, the manager, was terrible. I am appalled to have been called "combative" by Anthony Duke when I posed a question. He watched me and my friend park our car-- and said nothing. He was assisting me when a male employee said, if you are not being assisted, please move your car. Anthony then said we needed to move our car. I said, we were being helped, so I didn't understand. He then said one of us, me or my friend, had to move the car or he wasn't helping us. He got up and refused to assist us. My friend, who was also to be a driver for the rental leaves her license with me. This is also as we are giving him our licenses, which makes this very uncomfortable as he has our information and wants us to walk away from the counter-- especially given his behavior. My friend goes to move the car and I said what was said and that I wasn't clear on how that applied to us. He tells me that I didn't need to be "combative". I told him it was not combative given I posed a question. To be clear- I am an academic and am very aware of how I was stereotyped and how his authority was being used in an inappropriate way. He then behaved in a disgruntled manner throughout the rest of the transaction, which included yelling to others while talking to me. At the end of the transaction, he threw down the key and gave no information as to where to find the truck we rented, the status of the gas, he didn't ask questions he asked other clients. This location is poorly managed and Anthony Duke was not responding in a rational manner. From the time we parked our car, there was no clear message of what the processes and procedures were. Anthony was extremely disrespectful and unprofessional. I wish I could give zero stars. read more

If I could give a negative star, I would. The area U Haul leadership does not care about customer service or support. I had my reservation changed and then moved to Wisconsin pickup. I escalated it up and the manager said it was the only one in the area. Drove 1.5 hours to get the trailer only to find out it was out of service. When I called in all of a sudden there were 3 trailers within 8 miles of my home. This was all done the same day. Awful experience and rude customer service with U-Haul employees on October 2, 2018 in Minneapolis On Oct. 2, 2018 I called the U-Haul branch at 883 University Avenue West in St. Paul to ask if I could reserve a van for that morning. I spoke with "Hewey". I gave Hewey my phone number and approximately one hour later, arrived at this branch. I also gave Hewey my telephone number. Upon opening the door to the reception, "Kheta" announced that the U-Haul internet network was down, and that they had no idea how long it would take until it would be up again. Hewey had not called me to warn me of this. I explained having spoken with Hewey, who was in the room. I explained to Kheta that I was moving and needed to remove the remainder of my belongings from my former apartment. Kheta repeated that they had no idea how long the system would be down. I suggested that I leave my telephone number, and she agreed. I then remarked that it would make more sense to report this to the new occupants of the apartment. At that point in time, Kheta announced that she would not help me - even with my own telephone number. I responded that I was just trying to inform the current occupants of the delay. Kheta REPEATEDLY stated that she would not help me - in a very ugly tone. At that point in time, I asked her for her name and business card. She refused to give me a business card, and instead gave me her first name. She then pointed towards the door to the garage, and stated that I could speak with the manager. I walked to this door, opened it and asked for the manager. He yelled at me to leave the garage. When I say "yelled", I mean YELLED. I asked him for his business card. He gave it to me and again yelled at me to leave the garage. This card identified him as Mr. Joshua Thelen. I turned around and attempted to open the door back into the customer service area. It was locked. Over this entire time, Mr.Thelen continued to yell at me to leave the garage. I then pointed to the car entrance, which was open, and asked if I should leave through that door. Mr. Theien continued to yell at me to leave the garage and did not answer my question. I then left the garage through the car entrance and returned to the customer area. There was Mr. Thelen and Kheta again. Both of them began yelling at me again, saying that they would not help me. I pointed out that I would describe this experience on the "Yelp" website. Mr. Thelen said (verbatim) that they didn't care. In all of my life I have never, ever had such an awful experience like this with company representatives. Believe me, I will never, ever return to the U-Haul branch at 883 University Ave West in St. Paul. I recommend to U-Haul that they immediate fire both Mr. Thelen and Kheta. read more

Our friends warned us not to use Uhaul but we did anyways. Major mistake. The website gives the appearance you can schedule your pick up time. We planned according to this and were left waiting for a truck for six hours. We had to drive across the cities to get a truck. No one called to inform us there was not a truck at the location we requested, so my husband was stranded there when he finally learned there was no truck to pick up. By the time we had taken two hours to get a truck and get home, our moving help needed to leave, and our move took two additional days because of Uhaul. When I called customer service I was told I would hear back in three days. After waiting a week I called to check on the case and they had closed it because it had been "resolved." No one had called me and there had been no agreed upon resolution. They treated me as if I was wrong and didn't really care about our experience. We were offered a measly discount which was just insulting. $50 for our suffering is no match for the hell this move was because of them. We will never use this company again. read more

We have had to use this location of U-Haul more times than I can count....They always have what we need and we have been treated fairly. They also have a huge selection of boxes and packaging supplies here they do not have slightly used or damaged ones so you will pay more money for these. Idiots work here. Impossible to contact via phone or online, was told multiple times by people on the sales floor and at the national call center that my phone call would be returned promptly... Spent 5 days waiting for a trailer hitch I rush shipped overnight with zero contact from the company. Finally went into to the store to speak face to face with a representative and had to read their computer screen myself to see that the hitch was in fact delivered the day after I ordered it, even though they insisted it had not reached the store yet. Cross-country move unnecessarily postponed a full week thanks to them. Save yourself a huge headache and choose the Uhaul location right next to hwy 280 instead! I've rented from U-haul numerous times with no issue. Moving sucks, so the bar for expectations is fairly low. That's why this time I had to write a review. First off, the customer service was lackluster... I waited 20 mins to get my truck (even though I had reserved a truck ahead of time) then I was simply thrown the keys with no pre inspection of the truck. THIS IS THE KEY PART. If you turn down the insurance.... make sure they walk through or around the truck with you OR take pictures of everything... After 3-4 hours and less than 20 miles of driving I returned the truck. I made 3 stops. Pick up, drop off, and back. They next day I get a bill for ~$150 for excessive damage. What? I ask for details, I get nothing. Until I get a call from some "rep" who stated he examined my truck personally and there was a 10 ft scratch on the side of the truck. Interesting... 10 ft is pretty noticeable and would most likely cause a lot of damage to another party or object. Not easily forgettable. Regardless, no such incident could have happened. I was on the highway. Rather than listening, talking it out and finding possible reasons or settlement. I was told "you should've just gotten the insurance"and "I dont know what to tell you". Oh, thanks. Good luck with business. Typing this post and dealing with this place has wasted enough of my time, dont make the same mistake. read more

I was severely overcharged on miles. I did the express checkout when I ordered my cargo van. No one did an inspection with me beforehand of the vehicle nor wrote mileage down anywhere and when I dropped it off the guy checking vehicle drop offs said I could leave the van there and get an online receipt. When I received the receipt they charged me for 77 miles when I drove approx 27 miles! I went from your store to Golden Valley and back to St. Paul (your store). I didn't take a photo of the in and out mileage bc I figured the workers would be competent. I was wrong. Never will I go to you guys again. Never will I trust you with mileage. You rip off customers! How did I drive 77 mikes when my fuel receipt to fill the van only came up to 1.813 gallons! I filed a complaint and the Regional Manager was suppose to call me within 72 hrs and I never heard from him/her. Uhaul sucks. Use any other company. read more

Set up an appointment to get a trailer hitch installed on my car. Gave deposit so they could order the hitch. Arrived a week later at 8:45 am for a 9 am appointment. Called at 2 pm to check on the status of my installation. Someone was suppose to call me back. Called at 4 pm to check on vehicle, someone was suppose to call me back. Finally went back the UHaul at 6:45 pm (closes at 7 pm). My car wasn't touched/moved from where I left it that morning. All I got from a UHaul person outside was, "leave it overnight and we will get to it tomorrow". Very poor customer service and communication. I took my vehicle and asked for my money back. What was the use of an appointment if they were not going to get to the vehicle. All they had to do was communicate and I could of moved it to the next day!! read more

I had a WONDERFUL experience at this U-Haul location! We literally showed up at about 7:15am, with no reservation, and walked in all like, "Hey I need a truck!" And the guy behind the counter was like, "Holy shit we have 'em!" That aside, the dude was super helpful, he even found a way to make sure that we got the lowest rate possible instead of paying the outrageous $119 that the last place had me pay for the same truck rental plus almost $90 in gas to fill the friggin thing! No-no, not this time! I only paid $48 including gas for this truck! Screw conformity, I'm goin with Plan B! I digress once again... The move only took about 3 hours, I only went over by a single mile and the guy basically told me not to worry about it since I put more gas in than I used. They are honest, easy to work with, and the trucks here are super clean unlike some other U-Haul places I have been... Maureen, sorry you got dealt with that way, but my experience was quite the opposite! I feel really good about this location, and depending on where life takes me next, I may rent another truck here, or at least take the guys advice again :-) read more

My day with uhaul was very dull, I have never been so bored in my life. I'm sorry to say, but the excitement expressed by the people in the advertisements doesnt translate. FIVE STARS for being the only game in town and still providing clean, fully operable equipment, excellent service, and reasonable prices. We unexpectedly needed to help family with a cross-town move on a Sunday morning. This U-Haul was the closest to the location and was the only one with Sunday hours, so I expected to pay a small fortune if we were lucky enough to score a truck with zero notice. To my great surprise, the truck we needed was available for the day and because we got the right size, we only made one trip with it resulting in a total cost of just under 40 bucks. The staff was efficient and helpful. The equipment was clean and ran great. Thank you U-Haul of St. Paul!!! We will be back. read more

Moving is never fun and can be stressful. I have never had to deal with a truck rental in the past, but figured it could not be that difficult. I was totally wrong. I pre-ordered a moving truck online, from this location, a week prior to my move. They automatically set it up for 7AM, thanks but no thanks. I promptly called back and asked to have the truck from 10-4 on a Saturday. The man on the phone said no problem and I assumed I was all set. I called the morning of my move to let them know I was running late and they informed me that I only had the truck till 1PM. I was very confused because I had just called and was told 4PM. Apparently my original reservation was not changed and I was still due to pick up at 7AM. This was of course wrong, but they were unwilling to work with me. The man on the phone said I would have a late fee of a $100 if I returned the truck after that time. Screw that buddy, you messed up my reservation. I asked for the manager and attempted to calmly explain the situation and his response was, I am not going to argue with you about this, you can take the truck or not. He seemed to have no interest in listening to me or helping me any further. This was the worst customer service I have ever had in my life. The staff and owner of this location were totally unwilling to help me find another truck, let alone call another location, when it was their fault my reservation was not correct. My bad experience here had mostly to do with the way they hose you on fuel. They don't give you a full tank, so you're supposed to fill it back up to the point it was at when they gave it to you. If you don't they charge you $30 on top of market rate for gas. Then they give you a little sheet of paper that's supposed to tell you how much fuel you'd need to add depending on where the tanks at when you are done-- only the estimates it provides are really inaccurate in their favor. That meant I filled the tank for them, costing me an extra $10-$12 over what I actually used. And they refused to discount my bill at all despite me having a receipt showing how their estimate was 30% off in their favor. I don't go back to companies that do anything to squeeze extra money out of their customers. read more

Moving is a stressful thing to start. All that packing, coordination that goes into making things sync up. I chose Uhaul/Ubox instead of the Pods because of price, but I think that may have been a mistake. Ordering online was just as big of a mistake, but that is another story entirely. It is impossible to get in touch with this office, as they don't answer the phone. I had the corporate team send this office messages over their IM system, and they still don't respond. I've been calling since I noticed the shipping date changed on my online order, without my knowledge. The date has slipped twice now, and the corporate office is saying the St Paul office is supposed to coordinate and thay they are "sure they will respond". But alas, they do not. Needless to say, nearly four days after I returned the Ubox, it still hasn't shipped. These guys are unprofessional and unresponsive. I should have paid the extra money to Pods and avoided this stress. read more

DO NOT return your truck and let them tell you that you can just "leave the keys and go"-make sure you get the exact mileage and time on the receipt. They checked my truck in 4 hours after I returned so they could charge me an extra day and added 40 more miles than what was traveled. Still haven't heard from the manager after a week of emails and calls. This was the icing on the cake as my 2 months in advance reservation left me last minute traveling 15 miles out of my way bc the place where I was to pick up the truck didn't have it and the moving pads and dolly I reserved were also not available. Will never do business with uhaul again but want people to avoid this location for the completely falsifying information to be able to charge people more. Update: After sending proof that I returned the truck in the 24 hour timeframe by showing screenshots of the call I received from this place after I had dropped off my truck-I finally received an email saying they will refund me for the extra day charge. read more
