U Katsu is a new Japanese restaurant that specializes in katsu in the Foothill Ranch area. Hawaiian roll ($16) - This consisted of a California roll topped with tuna and avocado. Taste wise it was ok, and in terms of quality, it's what one might find at a local super market. Tiger roll ($17) - This consisted of a California roll topped with shrimp and avocado. Like the Hawaiian roll, it wasn't anything special. Chicken katsu curry ($19) - This came with rice, Japanese salad, miso soup, some pickled vegetables and a large chicken cutlet (breast meat) coated in panko served with a sweet-savory Japanese curry sauce. The portion was pretty large and the chicken katsu tasted great! Overall, I would pass on the sushi rolls here, they are just ok. The chicken katsu on the other hand was a winner!
Tucked in a corner of a small strip in the larger shopping center, I wish I noticed it sooner. It's small with a few tables and casual. It's a little wonky having to order takeout using the website when youre standing inside the place. But service was friendly. The food was good, and katsu had the crispness and lightness you want from katsu. What impressed us the most, though, was the presentation. The takeout boxes even impressed our typically indifferent preteen.
What a great spot, with excellent service, amazing food, and overall excellent ambiance! Came in right when they opened @ 11:30 and this place QUICKLY fills up! It's a very in demand spot in this area. We were greeted very promptly and told to pick a table. We were given water and told to scan the QR code for the menu. The menu is fairly simple to read online. We got the chicken katsu and the beef katsu. Both were delicious & had lots of flavor! The meal also came with a miso soup which was very tasty.
I really enjoyed this new spot! Food was delicious and came out fast. Prices are decent and portions are large. The pork katsu was crispy, juicy, and tender. I really liked the tonkatsu sauce. The curry udon is a bit heavy but tasted really good. I'd like to try other menu items next time
Nice new small katsu place opened up in foothill ranch! nice to have another katsu place so close by! Giving a 5 stars since the food is really good. The katsu was higher quality than other katsu places in OC, it was rly plumb and juicy and cooked through. The breading was more like a crispy fried chicken like breading and not a thick panko breading. The cons however are that this place is way more pricey than other katsu places and the portions are a lot smaller. You'll definitely be hungry afterwards as compared to Hako which gives more.
A very nice find. We went as a group. Didn't really know what to expect since the place is so new. Most of these new places have the QR code scanner for the menu, which I'm not a fan of. You order from here and then pay afterwards. Anyway, they have plenty of chicken and pork options. I ordered the chicken curry udon, which was a fantastic dish. As flavorful as the curry was, I was even more impressed with the quality of the chicken. Very tender and tasted amazing. Anything I order from here after this will be compared to this dish. Everyone in our group enjoyed their meal. The chicken katsu with rice looked amazing too. My friend ordered this and sad it was delicious. Big portion size too. Our group also ordered the edamame ( standard) and the gyoza, which was very good. The servers are very friendly and checked up on from time to time. Definitely looking forward to my next trip.
The hubs & I are always down to try a new katsu place. Opened just 10 weeks ago, U Katsu is located in nearby Foothill Ranch ~ between the Outback Steakhouse & Mickey Ds, on Portola Pkway. It's a small & quaint eatery with decent amount of seating. We stopped by close to 8 pm on a Saturday (per Yelp, it says they close at 9 pm), so it wasn't crowded much..just 1 other seated family & a couple of to-go orders. The decor is minimal, but the space is bright. You order from a QR code on each table and/or on an ipad for to-go. The staff are welcoming & friendly. Everyone seems to still be figuring out the flow of things. I wasn't uber hungry (since I had a late lunch), so I just ate a side order of spicy tuna roll off of my hubs' chicken katsu curry ($18.95) order. It came w/ 6 pieces and was enough of me. The spicy tuna very fresh and delicious w/ a side of eel sauce..trust! The chicken katsu curry was notable, but not wow or memorable. All katsu meals come w/ a cabbage salad, miso soup & seasonal pickled vegetables. It's definitely pricier here, for the amount of food you get..compared to other places in OC. We both shared a garlic butter edamame appetizer ($5.95) ~ which was uber garlicky. I liked it. We ordered a chicken katsu ($16.95), cheese tonkatsu ($18.95) and gyoza ($6.95/6 pcs) for the kiddies, to-go. Both kids enjoyed their meals. U Katsu is a good option for days when Hako's wait is too long..IYKYK.

The staff is very friendly and seem to do their best to service their customers, when they remember which order is for the correct table. We were given another table's food by accident (same dish though) but it was delivered way ahead of the rest of the table so one person was eating while others were waiting. The table next to us heard the mixup and they were also given a mixup when their plates came out. I got the pork tenderloin katsu, which was average compared to other places I have had katsu. There is no fresh sesame to crush and add to the katsu sauce and my cabbage had too much dressing on it. If you are in the area, this may be a suitable place to try.
Ordered online with their website for takeout. Packed very well! The pork katsu was Yummy! I'd steer clear of the beef katsu like others have mentioned it's ground beef. Other than that, Great place and we will return.

U Katsu is a new Japanese restaurant in Foothill Ranch, where Pick-Up Stix used to be. I'd consider it's in its soft opening period as it was first opened in April. Guests can order food using the kiosk mounted on each table. I suspect there is only one person in the kitchen preparing food because it takes some times before the food comes out. While I used the kiosk to order food, it is not equipped to process payment so I had to go to the cashier station to pay. It's a family owned/operated joint. Dave and Christine are welcoming. It seems to me this is their first time running a restaurant. There is no sign on the door for their hours. There is a nervous energy when they engage guests Food here are tasty. Katsu is crunchy, not oily. Crunchy roll is good too. I hope this joint will flourish so there is another place to go in this area. I plan to come back in a month to see how things go.
I visited here for lunch during their soft opening. Tonkatsu (pork katsu) is one of my very favorite meals so I was excited to see this place open in my neighborhood. It's located in a large plaza in Foothill Ranch so there's plenty of parking. I sat at a table (there are maybe a dozen) and ordered from a touchscreen that every table has. There were many variations of both pork and chicken katsu as far as size and sides. I decided on pork katsu with sides of salad and rice, which also comes with miso soup. Canned sodas are available, and I got a Coke, but I would have been fine with the pitcher of water set at my table. My food was delivered to my table in less than 10 minutes. The pork katsu was excellent, very delicious. The panko crust was perfectly crunchy and the pork tender and flavorful, obviously good quality. It wasn't oily at all. The presentation was a bit unusual as katsu is usually cut into thin slices but this was served in small chunks. No matter, it tasted wonderful. I'm a sauce guy and am critical of katsu sauce but this homemade katsu sauce is the best I've tasted outside of Japan. The accompanying salad was fresh and vibrant and the rice was fine. I even thought the miso soup was pretty tasty, this from a guy who isn't usually all that thrilled with miso soup. There was a small banchan of some sort of radish that was good too. Chopsticks were provided - I'm not sure if they have utensils if using chopsticks isn't in your skill set. Service was friendly and attentive and the décor is simple yet tasteful; I like their lighting. I'm glad to have a place nearby that serves quality katsu plates.
Solid new katsu spot in Lake Forest. I got a cheese katsu and it was nicely fried, crispy, and was filling. Other than that it was pretty standard for a Katsu compared to other places in Irvine. It was also served with miso soup, rice and a salad for 18.99. I wish there was more katsu sauce and a curry option down the line. Interior is pretty but kinda small. It seems like self seat and order with a tablet on the table, but I think they didn't have a hostess or dedicated waiter for seating yet. It got busy when I came on a Wednesday evening and my order took awhile. They're still in the opening phase and seemed understaffed so I'm understanding of that. Hopefully they can get the kinks out and staff more. Give it a shot if you're in the mood!

The pork katsu was delicious and fresh! I love the katsu sauce here, it's authentic and well balanced. The portions are fair for the price and you will definitely get full! The service is fast and efficient! We came in for lunch and it was moderately busy. The server took our orders and the meal came out in a timely manner. The ambiance is clean and modern inside. There's ample parking because it's next to a Walmart and Hobby Lobby. read more

Finally got to try this place. The worker was very nice and attentive. The bento box is pretty a nicely presented. The japanese curry is great. Its been a while since I have had good Japanese curry. I got the pork curry katsu. The pork is thin which is how it should be. I would like it to be thinner but I am ok with this. Came with cabbage salad and the dressing it normally comes in. For the price, I say will def come back and try more items. read more
My fiancée and I have been wanting to try this place since it opened and it did not disappoint. The chicken katsu is crispy and fresh. It pairs perfectly with the cabbage salad, white rice, and pickled veggies. The curry sauce was well balanced with that great umami flavor. And the katsu sauce was delicious too! We did a to go order and service was still super friendly. It's a cute tiny spot with a good amount of tables inside. Will definitely be coming back :) read more

Really good chicken katsu! I got a chicken katsu sando, chicken katsu curry plate, and a yuzu sparkling ade. The sandwich was amazing! The chicken katsu was the perfect amount of crispy and the slaw and curry were the perfect combo. The chicken katsu curry plate had large pieces of chicken with perfectly crispy katsu. The curry was phenomenal. Super flavorful. And to top it off, the staff was so nice and attentive. I will definitely be back! read more
A great addition in the foothill Ranch area for all the Japanese style Katsu dishes. This is a tiny restaurant with some seating area and take out. I like having my food fresh so I had to check this out for myself. They have all the usual Katsu dishes like that Katsu Plate, Sando and Curry. I knew I had to try the pork loin katsu plate and add some spicy tuna roll just because it's one of my favorite rolls in general. You place your order on your phone and it is sent to the table that you are seated at. The katsu was tasty and crispy, and I love the panko they use as it was very similar to the one used in Japan. The flavors all meshed very well but I felt like it would have been better if they would give a little more sauce (the curry) or even serve tonkatsu sauce at the table as it didn't feel like a proportional amount for what was being served. Service was good as everyone was friendly. Definitely enjoyed my meal but little things like those have huge impact in the long run but I will definitely be trying their other items soon. read more

My kid goes to a taekwondo studio nearby, so I've been seeing this place while passing by for a while. It opened about a month ago, and we finally tried it today. The tonkatsu was seriously delicious, and the chicken katsu was amazing too. We also ordered soba and the Crunch Roll -- and honestly, the Crunch Roll was insanely good. Probably one of the best rolls I've had in a long time. The kids had the yuzu drink, and I had the matcha yuzu drink. No joke, it tasted even better than drinks from some nearby boba places. Everything we tried was great, the food didn't feel greasy, and you can tell they really care about quality. Definitely a spot I'd highly recommend read more

This is hands down one of the best chicken katsu places ever. The chicken had a perfect crust and crunch on every bite. The flavor was amazing and the service was stellar. I will be coming back as the entire experience has been amazing. read more

Had a katsu don and it was amazing!!! Also got a chicken katsu bento and we ate everything! Loved the small container of pickled daikon. On our second visit we got two katsu plates and they were gone in minutes!!! read more

Excellent food! The pork was thick-cut, juicy, and cooked perfectly. The service was friendly, and everything was delicious. Their California roll was also very fresh and tasty. Ordering through the QR code was simple and convenient. I went for lunch on a Thursday, and the restaurant was packed. That's a great sign of a popular spot--I'll definitely be back! read more

Food was really good. Tonkatsu had great texture and flavor. And the sauce was awesome. This is the second time I have been there in about 1 month. Service seems a bit off and the instructions are a little unclear. They are a smallish shop and seem to have issues when it gets busy. If the service was a little better and we did have to wait like 40 mins to get our food, would have given 5 stars. Good food but it seems like they are still working out the service and ordering process. Will give this place one more try. read more

This place absolutely deserves 5 stars. We came in and were immediately taken care of--great service from start to finish, and they even surprised us with a free drink, which was a really nice touch. We ordered the chicken and pork katsu combo, and everything was on point. The katsu was crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and perfectly cooked. It came with miso soup plus our choice of udon soup and a California roll, which made it feel like a full, well-rounded meal. We also got the garlic edamame, and honestly, that alone is worth coming back for. I'm glad Foothill Ranch finally has a yummy place to get katsu. Overall, great food, generous portions, and excellent service. David, the owner, was very helpful and welcoming. We will be back! read more

Soba was great for a summer day. The beef katsu was with ground beef.... Not worth it for my taste. Better go with the pork. Service was slow for a small shop during lunch. Curry was more towards Korean curry than Japanese curry. read more
