From that location, it is about 8 miles from the North Carolina border. When you look at the outside of the place, it looks dated. Although it looks dated, it's not as noticeable as such inside. This post office is small and doesn't have a drive through. Parking is also fairly limited. However, due to the location of the post office, it's usually not that busy. They do close for a lunch break during the day. I can get in and out of here faster than other post offices in the city (such as at the Courthouse or Lynnhaven Pkwy). On this most recent visit, I came in to have a package delivered. After talking with the representative there, she was able to help me pick the best option for shipping. Since I was the only one in there, it was a very personable experience that is rare to find anywhere these days. Overall, this is a nice post office to come to if you don't want to have to worry about lines and waits. Sure, the drive may be a little while for some, but you may wait longer at other post office locations than it is to drive back and forth to this post office. If you are down in the southern part of Virginia Beach and need to go to a post office, this is your place to go.

How did I never know this Recycling Center existed?…read more My son has been helping me purge my house of old computers, printers, monitors, etc. They had been taking up way too much space. The weight, removal of the hard drives & bringing them downstairs had been a formidable obstacle. My son researched & found the city's recycling center which really impressed me. The location was quite convenient. From the north side of town take I-64 to the Indian River East exit then an immediate right on the road that runs in front of Regent University. Then take a right turn on Jake Sears Road. The Landfill & Recycling Center is on the right and very obvious. One immediately sees a very large version of Mount Trashmore with no landscaping. I suspect eventually it might become a similar park. At the gatehouse show your driver's license as proof of Virginia Beach residency. Entrance is free for individual but has a charge for businesses. Since we had household electronic recyclables we were instructed to go to the HHW area, which was a beehive of activity. The employees didn't offer to help since my son was there. I'm not sure if that would be the case if I went alone. They instead pointed out the various spots where the different types of electronics should be placed. It was a quite a quick instruction. So be prepared to listen closely. The organization is terrific. There are areas separated by dividers for the different products. I even saw an area closer to the open front building where the employees were located that had refrigerators. I believe that was the area where the computers were placed. Getting out of the vehicle and walking to the building I was able to learn quite a lot from my questions. The items placed on the street by residences for bulk pickup aren't taken to Recycling. They go in the dump with other trash. But 100% of what we brought on our trip will be recycled. So it's much better for the environment to bring those items to the Recycling area than to leave by the street for bulk pickup. As we circled out of the area I saw the bins where wood & other items the city considers construction debris (even though most is not) are placed. They are not allowed as a part of curbside pickup. I've struggled with what to do with these since my husband died since many won't fit in the trash bin. These bins weren't ground level. So it required hoisting the items over the top of bins similar to those behind shopping centers or businesses. This area was quite busy with what must have been commercial drop offs. Were I to struggle with getting something into the bin, I'm certain one of them would volunteer to help a Senior Citizen. Don't dare tell anyone I described myself in that fashion. :) I'm happy to know how to dispose of wood that falls apart so quickly in my backyard that faces the Chesapeake Bay a little less than a mile away. The corrosive atmosphere is a terrible destroyer of metal & wood. This was a very productive & informative visit to the Virginia Beach Recycling Center. I wish I had known the extent of it years ago. Recycle! Don't trash!

I was…read moretold here I would need to re-register my car and need VA plates despite not having VA as my resident state (here for a couple years due to the Navy). When I came to make that happen, someone drove into the DMV, so I was forced to go to another office. At the other office they informed me that I didn't have to register my car to VA due to military exemption. My husband registered his car here and retitled his car at this DMV. He was told there was a hold on his title and that he'd receive his title in the mail. After 3 weeks, I made him an appointment at the DMV as we hadn't received his new title and he had already paid for it. The appointment was at a different DMV. They informed him they hadn't correctly processed the title at this location and printed a copy for him on the spot. TL;DR: Avoid this place like the plague, unless you love wasting time!

While It is fun to just drop stuff on the ground and leave, it's always so busy because they make their hours of operation so ridiculous that everybody shows up at the same time and it gets constipated in that big building. And they limit the kind of things you can throw away there, while also wanting you to gently put it on a soft pile of crap in order to remove all fun from the experience while they wobble their hard hats on the top of their heads with glee at your disappointment. You will leave covered in dust, dirt, and a gnarly stench... like you're a damn zombie or something! You can also smell the place from miles up the road. Reminds me of my house.

Whether you've got some household hazardous waste, used motor oil or just a bunch of trash to get…read morerid of, it's convenient to just load it in your truck and head to the SPSA Transfer Station. The transfer station receives waste from the city's municipal haulers as well as private waste haulers so depending on when you show up with your load of waste you may have to wait in line to dump it. The wait is usually not too long, about twenty minutes is the longest I've had to wait. You just pull up to the scale house window and tell the employee what you've got then get in line to dump it. There is signage to guide you. Make sure you wait to drive in to the drop off area until another employee gives you the signal to do so. You just throw your stuff out and an employee will use the wheel loader to push it where it needs to go. Be careful because the area can get slippery and of course the place smells like garbage so be ready for that too. The employees are polite and helpful so don't hesitate to ask for help if you're not sure how to proceed. Be sure to check out their website too because it's full of helpful information.

The property has a unique exterior; one of the taller buildings in its area. This building can be spotted even before arrival; located 2400 Washington Avenue Newport News, VA 23607. Operating hours are Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM; the building is closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Wheelchair accessible entrances along with accessible doors. I didn't see a public restroom on the ground floor but again I wasn't there for long. I was able to locate the UPS drop off mailbox after asking the front desk clerk. The building employees seemed kind and the facility was clean.
