After reading all the good reviews on Yelp, my husband and I decided to try here for a late lunch/early dinner. We weren't as impressed as the reviews make it out to be. The restaurant was nice and clean, but the food was only meh. My husband ordered the scallops as a starter and couldn't stop raving about them, unfortunately that was the only item worth raving about. I ordered the minute steak, and he ordered the Charcuterie plate. Both were decent, but not exceptional. Their Chip 71 beer and the Prosecco wine was tasty. read more

Great dinner place, great location as well. The food was superb and the inside of the restaurant was very unique. We even asked local scottish people if that was a good choice before we ate there and the locals highly recommended it. We got the venison haggis and it was delicious (first time trying haggis). I've been quite a few times now. The restaurant is beautifully decorated, great staff, the chef himself is a lovely chap. There are always good wines and on the last visit we had very reasonably priced prosecco and white wine. The desserts have always been very good and I love the deconstructed nature of the dishes. read more

The U-Chip is an awesome joint. I love the Wee pub downstairs the best, but the upstairs bar and restaurant are worth a visit . The menu is full of "traditional" scottish fare, like "Finnie Haddie" and things made from lamb, but the menu generally focuses on "game", i.e. quail, rabbit, that sort of thing...Be careful of the downstairs restaurant though, I've heard that they often have expensive Chilean wines. read more

This place is super cool. Had a great day in Glasgow that ended with a beer, chips, olives and a salad. We found this place to be straight out of an old movie...maybe it should be in a new movie. One of our favourite eateries in Glasgow. The dinner menu is always excellent and I've never been sad about anything eaten here. They have highchairs which is a plus with a wee one and the cocktails and pints are delicious as well. I'm a fan of the Mojito and White Lady cocktails. My favourite dish so far is the mackerel with beetroot. You should definitely get a side order of their chips to try as well-so good. read more

When I was an exchange student in Glasgow (Fall 2008) I visited the Ubiquitous Chip only once. It was a decent bar, very cute, if not somewhat overpriced. Honestly though, just about every place near Ashton Lane (and near university) are overpriced, so enjoy the ambiance and grab a drink, if you wallet can handle it. read more

Eaten here on a number of occasions and always loved it but my last visit in May 2019 was very average. We sat in the main restaurant which is always an amazing experience. Started with broccoli salad followed by a duck main course both of which were ok i suppose but far from special. The service was slow. If this was a restaurant where i didn't have such high expectations i wouldn't have been so disappointing. read more

This place is extremely over hyped. If you live in any major city, I promise you've had better food, atmosphere and service. Our sommelier was sweaty and sick and couldn't offer any help with the 20 page wine list. The food was good, not amazing and unremarkable. We asked for a whiskey and found there is an entire book of whiskey that no one mentions. The paint is literally peeling off the walls, and the staff is kind but over worked. Super fan of the decor here, it's liking walking into a greenhouse for adults who like delicious food and excessive boozing. The space is huge and has three different areas, the restaurant, the brasserie and the bar. So technically you could stay here for breakfast, lunch and dinner and be just fine. We were there for dinner and the menu did not disappoint, theres something for everyone. In usual UK/European fashion, you order starters and entrees all at once and the sommelier will drop by after you've placed your order. The neighborhood is close to a lively part of town, so if you want a night cap, you've got several options near by. read more

Bothy was fully booked. UChip was able to squeeze us in. Excellent meal, wine (Croatian for a change), & waiters. Waiters were not Scottish - Canadian, Yorkshire. You need reservations and a sport coat if you want to eat in the main dining room - which had no tourists, by the way. Table around the perimeter was fine for us - though we did have to move away from the toilet/kitchen area by request. Other tables upstairs looked interesting. There is also a bar/pub area where the younger locals/university folks go - probably more fun. Safe at night. Hotel concierge later recommended the pub side more than the main dining room read more

We had the pre theatre menu which meant it was significantly cheaper than the a la carte. The food was good, but the wine list was enormous and a bit overpriced for what it was. It was also quiet and somewhat lacking in atmosphere. However the food was nice. read more

one of the best meals i had while i was on vacation in scotland.. it's quite pricy.. but service was excellent.. and the food was amazing.. we started off with an appetizer of haggis which was quite peppery.. a little bit overpowering. i had duck 3 ways.. puff pastry, leg of duck and some breast.. it came with a couple mussels.. it was quite excellent my fiancee's pigeon was cooked two ways.. it was perfectly cooked and she stated it was some of the best she's ever had.. this seems like a glasgow institution.. meaning if you're into fine dining.. you should drop on by if you're in the neighboorhood read more

The meal my husband and I had at The Chip was, for both of us, one of the best meals we have ever had. The duck pâté with cranberry and pistachio on crostini was HEAVENLY (and I do not typically enjoy pâté). The steak was perfect, potatoes delicious. For dessert, I had the Caledonian ice cream with summer berries and honey oats, paired with a FANTASTIC port. My husband had a lemon soufflé with a sherry and both were absolutely perfect. read more

Same Old, Same Old. This review is solely about the upstairs bar. It has been quite some time since I have been in UQ bar, mainly because of the staffs' attitude; too good to be working there and serving customers, too busy having long conversations with colleagues and ignoring customers. I visited last week with a friend and sadly, nothing has changed, I was ignored for about 5 minutes whilst the barmaid finished her chat with a colleague. When she eventually got round to serving me, I made it plain that I was not happy at being kept waiting but no apology was forthcoming - arrogance, or what? Will I be back, what do you think? In addition, I intend to get in touch with Colin Clydesdale about this example of shocking service as I thought things had improved since he took over the management of the place. KL read more

Really, the perfect place for dinner in the West End. The interior of the building is incredible: a lovely, two-story atrium is used for the main sitting area, there's a wee pub in the back, and nerds like myself are in for a real treat on your way up the stairs to the toilets, as murals adorn the walls with old Scottish poets and sayings. The food, however, surpasses even the brilliance of the setting. I had a delicious rabbit terrine and pork belly main on the pre-theater menu (only £16). I recently traveled to Glasgow with a large group - and made reservations at Ubiquitous Chip in advance - based on some of the reviews and details I had found online and in travel guides. We had a smaller menu designed, with three options from Starters, Mains and Desserts, and took over the Mezanine level upstairs. The food was fantastic. Highlights? Langostinos, Tarragon Tortellini, Fried Halibut, and the Chips Famous Caledonian Oatmeal Ice Cream. I'd go back in a heartbeat, with our group of 20, or just 2. The service for our large group was fantastic, with friendly attentive staff. Kudos to Eimear for her assistance in coordinating everything with me. We had a wonderful experience. read more

This is a restaurant is legendary and should definitely be on your 'to do' list. It's at the higher end of the scale and should be considered a treat, but it's worth every penny! The food is exceptional and the chefs use local produce and live-stock. The place reeks of quality - the menu, the wine list, the ambience, the mural on the way to the toilet. The staff are enthusiastic, and seem proud to work there. This is a dining experience and a real delight. read more

This is a review of The Chip as a bar, rather than as a restaurant. Drinks are not cheap but they are not particularly over-priced, considering that this is Ashton Lane. The quality of drinks has been uniformly good, in my experience. The same can't always be said of other Ashton Lane spots that charge the same or more. The upstairs balcony deserves a mention - it has heaters and is covered so is good all year around. It is mostly a smokers haunt but as it is so high it is not smoky itself. The views are of rooftops but it's fresh air with occasional wafts from the Wee Curry shop. The bar food is really excellent and very reasonably priced. On a recent wet Sunday afternoon I got a soup & sandwich, but no ordinary soup and sandwich - scotch broth with fantastic, home-made lamb stock and a proper sandwich with home-made bread, half-inch thick, still warm from the oven, slightly smoked ham with a side of home-made mustard. Each of these were truly delicious and each cost £3. Good points include the selection of beers, the pub food, the ambience, the late opening, excellent cocktails and the location. Too often the Chip is derided by many as being overly-expensive but it usually turns out these people have been but once to the restaurant if even inside the doors. read more

This can still be a quality dining experience. It has a lot of atmosphere, and a feeling of somewhere special. The hothouse effect of the greenery and the classic Scandinavian style work well together. The murals by Alasdair Gray are a reason for visiting on their own. The menus have always relied on local produce and sourcing, long before this was fashionable, and if some menu items are a bit old-fashioned, then others are bang up to the minute. The bar upstairs is also a classic and well worth a visit. It also serves food, including the classic take on haggis. read more

The Ubiquitous Chip is located on Ashton Lane in the west end of Glasgow. I really like this place. The food is usually very good and the ingredients I believe are usually locally sourced. There are a couple of rooms to eat in here, but I think the open main area is the best. Good food, good location. read more

The Ubi (pronounce you-bee by most, but me and my pals call it the you-buy to try and get someone else to get the round...ha!) is the greatest pub in Glasgow imho. It's alone in Ashton Lane in being the only pub without music blaring away, and doesnt need it if your chat is up to it. Gracious, elegant bar staff like Emmahontas and Jim and the really tall guy are always professional and they serve the mega draught beers with aplomb. They only sell 2 lagers on draught - Riegeler (lovely 4% one) and the dynamite Furstenburg draught which they have sold for years, before it became trendy to import nice beers. Chip IPA is nice too fi you prefer dark beer. Their wines of the month are usually well chosen and the bar prices are good value compared to the other bars in the Ashton Brain. The downstairs bar I never go in - dunno why ,and only occasionally the wee chip, which is nice, but a bit square sometimes I reckon. I love the new open air balcony which is a good place to score in the summer time, or fail beautifully at doing so. The restaurant is beautiful and full of green things, I think they 're plants, but maybe not. the atmosphere differs on friday night s and saturdays to the rest of the week and can get a bit rowdy but is still fun - it's glasgow after all and I cannot think of a time I ever saw trouble inthere. Which is a feat for Ashton lane I reckon. Their espresso isnt that good (right Roger?) but the upstairs bar food is very very nice and they alo give out freebie cheese on toast and hand made chips sometimes upstairs. The best thing about the place though is the mix of people. Lots of people will tell you it is a BBC / media bar. But this isnt true now, if it ever was . You get regular glasgow types (if this exists) in there, plenty of west end laidback people and also the fair share of Aku Ankkas. I guess too, like any bar ,but you wil also get top ballerinas, high level chess players, patriots, xenophobes, depressives, impressives, trouser-pressives, students, academics, artists, chefs, clerks, designers, international types, low level chess plyers (I admit it) , men, women, occasional dogs, decent writers, Scottish football managers and players, Kylie and loads more. They need you too, that's the point :) i like the little light things above the bar too. read more

Sorry to complain but I have been to the Chip twice in the last fortnight and on both occasions the food left much to be desired and the staff were rather condescending. I have been to the Chip several times over the years and it was always a good experience but it's standards have slipped perhaps because it's founder has passed away. This is criticism of the main restaurant but the bars and the bistro remain excellent. read more

We had an outstanding jazz lunch at this cute restaurant in the West End. The service was excellent, the food not only delicious but well presented. We both had the set two course meal for 19 - he had an appetizer and I had dessert and we each had a main (and we shared). The music was loud enough to hear but not too loud. On the 14th February this year, I had arranged nothing for Valentine's day. I phoned the Chip at 4pm or thereabouts and said something along the lines of,I know what the answer to this will be but I'm going to ask anyway, do you have a table for two tonight? Surprisingly, the answer was Yes. They saved me! Probably not for the first or last time. They had a cancellation from love's young nightmare, possibly. Or perhaps someone had caught the flu. No matter, we were in. And a potentially dreary Thursday night was re-born. We had an amazing dinner. I maintain that it's probably the best fillet steak I've ever had. It was £35, with pepper sauce, and worth every penny. If I remember correctly, we splashed out around £70 on a Margaux. Or was it Pauilliac. It was great anyway. And we had wonderful cheese. Possibly sourced from one of the two proper local cheese-mongers perhaps, George Mewes. And we had a Riesling to accompany. Gossip/name-dropping: Fraser Forster was sitting across from us with his brassy bit. He was so tall, his legs didn't fit under the table. He was very, very casually dressed but no one seemed to mind. Celtic had just been beaten 3-0 by Juventus in the days before. I felt like going over and consoling him in a 'Good Will Hunting' fashion It's not your fault. It's not your fault. I eat in this restaurant as often as possible and have never once regretted it. I have never walked out in any mood other than unhappy to be leaving. One time, we just showed up and they gave us a table for 45 minutes so we could have cheese and dessert wine, where other local restaurants had told us nicely to get lost. On another occasion, we couldn't decide what sherry to have and they let us try several at no extra cost. If I had limitless funds, I would simply live there and die a fairly young, very happy man. read more
