The best Sunday lunch in Glasgow FACT and I know my beef! I have only been here for Sunday lunch and work christmas night out but not been disappointed any time I have gone! So back to the beef...the Sunday Roast is the best value roast you can get! For £26 you get 3 courses (including that beef) and a palette cleanser. I've eaten at the Chip three times and always really enjoyed it. The main restaurant is downstairs and the Brasserie is located on a mezzanine upstairs and offers a less expensive (though still not cheap) menu. I visited last week for lunch in the Brasserie and I'm already looking forward to visiting again! The Brasserie lunch menu is flexible with starters, mains and desserts as well as "Pieces" or sandwiches for the non-Scots out there. There's also a set menu with two or three course options. If you opt for a piece you can add soup for £2 and still have change from a tenner, pretty good going for one of the top restaurants in the city. I went for the crowdie and leek cannelloni to start which was creamy and tart in equal measures. I'm so glad I ordered the Inverurie minute steak which comes drenched in garlic butter and with a side of skinny fries. It was mouthwateringly good! For dessert I had a chocolate mousse ( I think it was called something else on the menu) with peanut brownie and white chocolate foam. The dessert was ok but I really didn't like eating it out of a jar, it felt a bit like eating baby food! I enjoyed the peanut brownie a lot and would have really liked a big slab of it on a plate. One of the reasons I love coming here is that the place has character. There are three seperate bars including the Wee Pub and they also have a roof terrace which is a lovely place for a pre food drink on a sunny day. Don't miss the Alasdair Gray mural on the back staircase and keep an eye out for lots of other interesting artistic details. The main courtyard where the restaurant is located is full of greenery and even has a water feature. Sitting in here during the day feels like being outside without having to deal with the cold and rain. At night the fairy lights come on and it all gets a bit romantic. First visit to the Chip in over ten years and a great experience was had by all. We had a table of nine and every person was bowled over by the quality of the food and wine. We made a serious dent on their wine list so I can't quite recall what we had for last course but it was all good and the open nature of the courtyard where we were seated meant we didn't feel uncomfortable making a little bit of good humoured noise. read more

We visited, drank the Spanish bin ends dry and had a wonderful evening! Our small but perfectly formed party of 4 arrived after going to the movies next door. We partook of a quick pint of local real ale in the pub part of the 'Chip' which was refreshing. We had cracked a bottle vino over the course of the movie and were in a jolly mood, and unlike some other patrons we had some dress sense. However one might think I personally had no hair sense as I had spots in my hair...died to look like a cheetah! You may wonder why....well it makes folks smile and my motto is to make the most of my greying locks whilst I have them! Onto the staff....unlike others I found them to be efficient, pleasant and professional. Now the good part...the food! I started with the meat haggis and 10/10 it was too. Rather than have a main course I decided to have two starters, the langoustine pan fried and a portion of the scallops in a soup....which again hit the spot. I passed on the deserts but my fellow diners all jumped in and enjoyed ice cream and cakey things all well made and served with a strong espresso. The 2nd bottle of wine drained we toddled off 285 quid poorer but having had a jolly evening, and created a memory in the wonderful restaurant setting. Being July the night was light, the rain shower had passed and we wished we had the gold card that would allow us to fly over to see our Glasgow friends more often. Being exiled in the US we last ate in the bistro part of the place over 15 years ago, we were impressed that the food standard was as good as we remembered. My wife and I enjoyed a very nice dinner here while visiting Glasgow, Scotland. It was a very busy evening, around 6:30pm, reservations were required but they managed to get us seated at a table that was not occupied for an hour and a half, which was very nice of them. We loved the atmosphere, very warm and inviting place with good natural lighting, sort of an urban feel to it. We shared a bottle of wine, and ordered three things to share: the traditional haggis, pork cheek, and a wonderful pork cutlet with fresh veggies. I have to say, not a single complaint. We enjoyed these as a three-course meal and shared them, there was more than enough food for three people. The haggis, which was our first time trying it, was delightful. I believe it was cow lung, heart, esophagus, and veal liver, all ground up and seasoned. Served with a whiskey sauce, paired up with mashed potatoes and mashed turnips. Would love to have this again. The rest of the meal was also wonderful, the pork cheek was also something I've never had, very tender and delectable! I would recommend this place anytime when visiting this neighborhood in Glasgow. Feel kinda bad reviewing this joint, given I've never had any of their grub BUT yeah.. it's good. Hella good. First time properly in here recently and I was into it. Gorgeous decor and amazing staff who manage to keep things moving along even when it's super busy, as it was on Friday night there. Not as expensive at the bar as you may expect, this is a prime spot for a guaranteed good night out in the West End. A gander at the menu, and the 12 million reviews on Yelp, suggests a return visit for food is sorely in order. read more

A few weeks back, the Mr and I decided to take a long walk to the West End, investigating some local shops en route (see Velvet Moon & The Shop of Interest, for example). By the time we hit Ashton Lane, we had an hour to kill before heading to meet our fellow Yelpers at the Dumpling Inn. It was cold. Very, very cold. But then Mr A. recalled that Ubiquitous Chip has a fireplace - and it was nicely roaring when we stumbled upstairs into the bar. Thankfully. There's a separate restaurant part and a rooftop terrace. The main bar has a laid back confidence and kind of straddles the line between a modern wine bar and an old fashioned, countryside bar. The staff were pleasant, fast and professional. When we arrived it was kinda busy, but by the time we left it was jumping! It's somewhere good to go chill out with friends, if you're kicking about the West End. read more

I would love to go to Ubiquitous Chip for a meal but unfortunately don't have the funds, perhaps someone could take me though, hint hint. I have, however, been to the "the wee pub" section and one of my Uni lecturers bought quite a few bottles of wine for my class at the end of term, so after our last class test we all nipped down to Ubiquitous. This was before said Uni professor made a Facebook account and posted his letter of resignation for the whole world to see. Hilarious. While I'm not a wine connoisour, the wine we had here was delicious, I usually don't like red wine but this stuff was good. It was also a charming place to sit and chat with a relatively large group of people. I always imagined that it would be rather small as it looks deceiving small from the outside, but inside it's far from that. There are various seating areas and as it was a nice day we went between the bar area and the outside seating section. It's not as pretentious as I'd imagined, we were all dressed very casual and didn't look or feel out of place. I guess it you have a few extra pennies then the pub area is a great place to sit, I just hope one day I can eat in the restaurant section. read more

Yum yum yum. The Ubiquitous Chip (restaurant) is AWESOME! Stunning and beautiful inside, with leafy plants and lots of light coming in, it is full of class. The food was excellent; I had a very succulent steak (when don't I?!), and it was perfectly done. The wine list was amazing, and the waiter helped us pick a bottle suited to our tastes and to our meal. I was well impressed. Even though I was feeling very full after my main, I had a dessert as well. I couldn't help myself. My first two courses had been so superb, the dessert has to be fab as well. And it was. We were there for a while; and they didn't seem to be concerned with turnover, so we were at our leisure. It didn't feel like a long time, but a fantastic meal should be savoured. Quite right. Why 4 stars and not 5. Mainly because the food might not be for everyone. It could be considered slightly on the pretentious side by some. Having said that, the setting is wonderful, the staff are extremely good and are attentive and friendly. Food is contemporary and set out on the plate in an attractive manner. I had Octopus, that arrived one tentacle artistically placed over some cauliflower with some nutty sauce. Others in my party had scollops, all looked great. For main, meaty treats, homely and with some fantastic chips or tatties is recommended. The name is appropriate but Ubiquitous these chips aren't, you;d be hard pressed to find such good chips outside of Amsterdam. ;). I am sorry to say, I cannot remember what anyone had for dessert as it's been a wee while and the menu seems to have changed, but I remember it was chocolaty and good. House wine was good too. got possible one carafe to many. lol To sum up - Great food, expensive, a treat and great service and location with stunning decor. Not in the mood for a full production dinner, we ate at the "Wee Pub" attached to the Ubiquitous Chip last night. In addition to the full menu from upstairs, you can also choose selections from the Bar Menu which features some seriously tasty options at much more reasonable prices. We had the Cockaleekie (chicken and barley) soup, the Vegetarian Haggis, Neeps 'n' Tatties (turnips and potatoes for us Yanks) and Beef Stovies. The soup was the standout, the stovies were good but there is definitely something lost in the vegetarian translation of haggis. The Wee Pub is really a small place, with very limited seating, but it has a very warm atmosphere. Nothing remarkable as far as beer or scotch selections, but enough choices to satisfy most anyone. read more

Never eaten in here, in fact all the years I've lived in Hillhead I only went into here for the first time only a few weeks ago. We just went in for a few drinks as we had eaten elsewhere, and I was pleasently surprised what I found. We went to the bar upstairs, beside the snug, and the service was brilliant. My girlfriend got a taste of the wine before she bought as she was unsure what to go for and they had Duchers on draft, so a no brainer for me. We decided to sit upstairs on the roof garden - I had no idea Glasgow had any roof gardens open to the general public! After we had had a few drinks a server came up with complimentary chips and (some kind of fancy) cheese on toast! Perfect! The best way to accompany a nice pint is homey food. Will definitely go back here as they place is beautiful inside, and going by what other Yelpers say, the food is devine! read more

The Ubiquitous Chip is well known in Glasgow for being an established, highly rated restaurant that promises to give you an outstanding culinery experience. Time and again people return through its doors because it doesn't fail to impress. You are first met with the staff, who are utterly impeccable in their white collars and are all genuinely inviting. You are then led through to the diner area which is stunning. It's very leafy and with its glass domed roof, you feel like you're sitting in a conservatory decorated for a garden party. There was starry tea lights everywhere and an elegant, timeless atmosphere. The menu is rich in delightful food of the highest class. It's all locally sourced (as is indicated on the menu), and you can expect anything from salmon, duck or even Perth pigeon, should a rarer delicacy tickle your fancy. There are a few vegetarian options and each appetiser or main is accentuated with delicious veg and side orders should you desire them. For a standard dinner date, the Chip costs £35, and you are best to make a reservation as it is always very busy indeed. You might ask, then, why I haven't awarded the Chip 5 stars. It is undoubtedly worthy of every drop of praise it gets, but for me it's a matter of taste. Yes, it's an absolutely lovely evening where you feel as though you are being pampered by staff (and whoever is fronting the bill!) but it's not a viable option for low earners. The cheapest wine bottles are £20 so although they would be delicious, I can't afford that. I don't want to sound too grim about the price as the Chip is a real treat....but a treat it is, and so isn't the kind of place I would come off the cuff for a nice meal. I'm quite a down to earth diner, so hip and tasty foods in nice bars usually satisfy my hunger pangs. Some of the menu is too outlandishly frilly for me and although it's what keeps the yummy mummy brigade "yah yah" ing, I save it for special occasions. Speaking of, this place is perfect for big birthday parties, treating your mum to a beautiful night out, or popping off a wee proposal, so bear in mind that it is gorgeous! read more

Ashton Lane is one of our favourite spots in the west end of Glasgow. It's a small cobbled backstreet just off busy Byres Road. It may be a small street, but it is packed full of quality pubs and restaurants and the vibrant atmosphere has people coming from all over. Having spent many drunken night's in Ashton lane, we had never tried any of the many restaurants dotted along the street. The place we had wanted to try for a while was Ashton's Lane much celebrated Ubiquitous Chip. Everyone we spoke to raved about the place, with no bad reports. For one reason or another we never got round to going, but after hearing so many good reports, we finally booked in for a long awaited Sunday lunch. Before I start with our lunch details here is a little bit of history, "The Chip" has been serving the good people of Glasgow since 1971, previously it was situated in Ruthven Lane but in 1976 it moved to a larger premises in Ashton Lane and have called it home since then. The restaurant has 2 AA rosettes and is on the Michelin guide, but has a reputation of not chasing Michelin stars but serving up good quality Scottish food and has long been known as one of Glasgow's best spots. After a nice stroll around Ashton Lane we arrived at "The Chip". We were greeted by a young female waitress and shown to our seats. The restaurant was quite big with tables well-spaced out, we weren't sure if we liked the botanic garden decor but this was just our own personal view. We were shown the menus for the day, the a la carte and the set lunch, we opted for the set lunch of 3 courses for £19.95 which seemed good value. Each course had 3 choices so we had plenty to choose from. Now onto the good part the food, 1st we were served canapes of Mushroom foam and a small pastry with goats cheese, both were lovely. We were then served honey and oat bread which was unusual but very nice. For starters it was Duck Rillette and cure salmon both were amazing. For mains it was pork belly and hake. The pork belly was cooked nicely with a nice crisp skin as was the fish which melted in the mouth. Deserts were cheese board and a lovely chocolate cake, the cheese board was a bit limited as it was only one cheese but was nice and the chocolate cake was very rich and yummy. The reputation "The Chip" has earned is well deserved. The food was of a really good quality and we really enjoyed each course, the cheese course was a bit of a let-down as it consisted of two portions of the same cheese, although the cheddar was nice. The dish of the day was definitely the hake main course, everything was cooked perfectly and a joy to eat. The service was smooth and the staff were able to answer questions about the food with ease which is always good to see. The restaurant was quiet when we first arrived but within half an hour the place was full and created an enjoyable atmosphere to dine in. The lunch lasted around an hour and a half and it was an experience we would come back for again. Overall we enjoyed our first experience at "The Chip". It is certainly not a fine dining experience but if you're looking for a relaxed atmosphere and good quality food, then Ubiquitous Chip is a winner. The Lunch deal at £19.95 is a good deal and one we would recommend. "The Chip" is serving food on a higher level than most places in Glasgow and for us it easily goes into our top three restaurants in Glasgow; well deserving of its reputation as one of the cities best restaurants. read more

It depends where you go IN the chip - the main restaurant has a great reputation and a unique atmosphere/setting. Every time I've eaten there it's been very pleasant if maybe not 'oh my god wow!' And it's pretty pricey. If you're in the bar upstairs it's all dependent on timing. Midweek and during the day - brilliant, a haven from the sadly now homogenised by the G1 group Ashton Lane. In the winter a glorious smelling open fire and it's doggy friendly so you can usually make a few furry pals. The terrace upstairs (I'm loath to call it the smoking terrace at that spoils it for the non smokers) is great on a sunny day too... if you can get a seat/table as it's not the biggest. Food - wise in the bar - don't even bother. Small selection and nothing spectacular. I once had to send a meal back that I'd have been embarrassed to serve to myself at home, never mind send out of a kitchen with a reputation of the Chip. I'd always avoid the bar on Friday or Saturday nights for several reasons: it gets SO busy that getting to the bar is an issue. This isn't helped by the regulars who sit or stand AT the bar and get in the way, meaning you have to fight through or lean over them to try and get the bar staff's attention (good luck with that, they're never the most observant) then they huff and puff and tut at you when you try and lift your drinks from the bar over them. And it's a particular kind of weekend clientele too - hairsprayed middle aged nippy faced middle class golf club members & wives who are 'done up' for a night out and think they're 'it and a bit'. The one positive is that it's an older crowd so you don't have to put up with youngsters. read more

Service was a bit slow (to take orders & refill drinks, but food was quick) but that happens and they had a special event. We ate in the brasserie section. Loved the local IPA and the server recommended several scotches which I hadn't tried. Came to this place with a friend who lives in the area and comes to this place often for drinks. It it beautiful. The place is so nicely decorated and the atmosphere is great. The staff are very good and super friendly. The menu is a little different as it mostly is set up as shareables for the table. The portion sizes are pretty good and the staff are good at guiding groups about how much of what to order. The selection of food is good. Everything tasted great. I would recommend anyone travelling to Glasgow to stop in. read more

Oh my, to think I almost left Glasgow without savoring this gem, makes me shudder. For three years, I've listened to my son, with his budding college palette, sing praises ad nauseam for this West End dining destination. Tucked off the main drag on Ashton Lane, he took his girlfriend there, spent his weekly food allowance, to impress her. It worked but he never went back. Not possible on his student budget. On each of my parental visits, he mentioned Ubiquitous and I, well, to be perfectly honest, snubbed it. It sounded so pedestrian, so fried, so American, so unappealing. Then came his graduation from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. I didn't need to ask where he wanted to celebrate before moving to London. By far, this is one of the best restaurants in Glasgow, a hidden gem behind an odd name, an indoor jungle - think Jumanji - and white washed brick walls. Here's what our party of six sampled: - The Chip's venison haggis with champit tatties, carrot crisp and turnip cream. Divine, simply the best we've ever tasted. - Grilled monkfish with smoked pancetta and haricot beans. Melt in your mouth. - Pistachio dusted Islay scallops - delicate, yet left a lasting impression. - West Coast landed langoustines - don't miss. - Roast rump of Inverurie lamb - tender, savory. - Scotch Aberdeen Angus fillet steak au poivre - Oh heavens' gate, take us now. We were a party of eleven on Saturday night (04/01/14) to celebrate a big birthday. Everyone thought their meal was delicious. Some opted for the game, others the steak (all cooked to perfection) an some the vegetarian choice. The starters and puddings were delicious as were the little hors d'oeuvres and petit fours. It's one of those names that's synonymous with Ashton Lane and Glasgow's West End. The name that you weren't quite sure how to pronounce in the first instance and find yourself tongue-tripping over when you're trying to tell others about your dining experience there. 'The Ubiquouotus....Ubiquittitious....that pure fancy dear restaurant up Ashton Lane'. That will give them the general idea anyway. So off I went to meet my other half's extended family, at a rather special dinner for ten in the 'Chip. We'll call it that for now to avoid any slebbering. After battling my way up the cobbles in heels (the designer of that lane has a lot of bruised knees to answer for) we made it to the door, and the waiter opened it up to reveal quite a big surprise behind. A Utopia of greenery heaven, a wee indoor pond, glass ceilings and windows with light streaming through, cobbled floors (damn you cobble man) and a table laid for ten lay in wait of us. The place is really beautiful; from the darker ambience of the dining room complete with lots of interesting art work to the light and airy trellis filled Courtyard where we were seated. It took a while for our assemblage to assemble, and the waiters buzzed around us bringing water and bread. When everyone was there, we ordered a bottle of champagne, which a wee jaunty man brought to our collective amusement. He was the sort of man who's name you took turns to guess and imagined him in gold lame hot pants dancing to Copacabana in a Spanish gay bar. (Disclaimer: he may not be gay) It took a while for my wine glass to be filled, which was an accumulation of our tardiness to order and the wee hotpant wine man's particular wish to bring one bottle to the table at a time. When we did finally get our swill it was lovely, although no doubt very expensive. Dinner. This was the main part, the part we'd all been waiting for. The 'Chip offers an evening menu at a pricey sum of £39.95 for three courses, but for special occasions I wouldn't say this was extortionate. A little dinky cappuccino cup was presented to each of us with an appetizer of celeriac and horseradish soup (i'm sure there is a fancy name for it but whatever) which was bloomin' marvellous. I then had the venison haggis, which came beautifully presented as everything does, and essentially tasted like haggis without all the bits. Nice. But it really was. I moved onto the pan-fried halibut, which was d-licious. Served with a gorgeous cauliflower risotto, and tablets of guinea fowl boudin (I have no idea what that is but it was ok, and yes, I had to look up the online menu to remind myself) It was a small portion, but plenty, and superb. Sides were ordered for the table but to be honest, not really needed, although the baby potatoes and the chips were fab. As if I didn't have enough finery in my belly, the desserts were too delectable to dismiss, and I chose the 'famous' Caledonian oatmeal ice cream, which was served in slices, very unique and brilliant. Porridge ice cream. Yum. If you'd popped me with a sharp pointy bit I would have burst into a million Steph particles, and almost 4 hours after we descended upon this pretty little greenhouse, we left, hobbling along the cobbles helped somewhat by the wine. This one I struggle with...while it offers excellent food, the menu can be a bit pretentious. Their cuisine is very traditionally Scottish, but then they take it up a notch, cut the portions in half, and charge you more for it. Very tasty, though...just a bit stuffy, which doesn't really jive with the vibe of Ashton Lane and the ambience of the restaurant. However, I can't give a lower rating because the ambience, wait staff, and cuisine are excellent and you should definitely try this place out. read more

A great restaurant in the trendy, chic West End of Glasgow. The atmosphere is fun and edgy and the food delicious. Highly recommended.

4 1/2 stars. Some of the best Scottish cuisine I've ever had... the food is locally sourced and delicious, while also being imaginative and diverse. I had a 'trilogy" of venison which was outstanding (I'm not even a big fan of this). They have a superb selection of whisky, which is quite appropriate, and every part of my meal there was great. Great dinner place, great location as well. The food was superb and the inside of the restaurant was very unique. We even asked local scottish people if that was a good choice before we ate there and the locals highly recommended it. We got the venison haggis and it was delicious (first time trying haggis). All the food that we got was delicious. It's also surrounded by fun bars and pubs after dinner! :) I'd go back! read more
