Wow graduation in 2027 can't come soon enough...I'm so sick of this place. No wonder there are so many signs on the high stairwells saying "you're not alone" and "help is there"...because the UCI SHC (specifically psychiatry) is literally a part of the problem!! Their asinine policies make no sense (if I HAVE to arrive 30 minutes early, maybe set my appointment start time for THIRTY MINUTES EARLY!?!?!?!?!) I feel like the psychiatrists do this so they can have extra time to just hang out and still get paid without having to actually see patients. Honestly, it's like they don't even know or don't even care that they cater to STUDENTS. If you have UCI insurance and also have a car I recommend going somewhere else. So, I was at Wednesday Teller Lot meet up and I tripped over a parking..block thing and I ate it on the wonderful gravel really hard. Quite embarrassing but it also hurt like hell & I was bleeding. Since I didn't have health insurance with the school (I got it waived), I had no clue where I could go. I wasn't about to walk into Kaiser because well I needed to get cleaned up ASAP & Kaiser was far and it hurt to drive. I called my employer to tell them I'd be late and also asked where I could find such a place & she recommended the student health center. Duh, Tiffany! I hobbled in and they took care of me right away. They were really friendly, even asking me if I wanted to be wheel chaired down the long hall way to the patient rooms. But, stubborn me decided to hobble anyways haha. I didn't have insurance with them so there wasn't too much they could do. But, they honestly did more than they had to. They could have just the minimum out of obligation but they cleaned it up as much as possible and told me to go to Kaiser anyways just in case I wasn't up to date with my tetanus shot, etc.etc. The lady even asked how I was feeling, if I ate yet and gave me juice :) read more

Okay so complete 360 from my previous review. Things have gotten better - at least since my first impression and experience of this place. Between my first experience last September and today, I had stopped by one other time only to get a flu shot - that process was fast and easy despite the hordes of students who were at the health center to also get flu shots. The staff got students in, inoculated and out within minutes. Organized chaos - but it worked I was able to make an appointment for the same week to see a physician and I imagine was only able to do so because the quarter hadn't started yet (instruction at least) - so campus was still relatively mellow. The wait time once you complete self-check in to when your name is called is relatively short. There are magazines, tv, pamphlets and of course the university's free wifi network to keep you busy until it's your turn. My brief but thorough visit with the physician was pleasant and he was very professional and cordial the entire visit. I was able to pick up my prescription at the equally convenient pharmacy located within the same building - and the wait for that was also short. I had some insurance questions which were thoroughly answered by one of the friendly insurance/billing reps also located in the same building. What makes it really convenient is that everything (office visit, copays, prescription medications) gets billed to your Zotaccount if you're under UCI's insurance plan. If you're not, be prepared to pay out of pocket and file a claim with your insurance. Parking is limited upfront - the closest structure is the Social Sciences Parking Structure and it's not that bad of a walk from there. I'll write another update if things go downhill on my next visit once classes are in session again. I can only hope that the smooth experience this time around isn't completely due classes being out and campus itself being empty. read more

Nightmare to work with - and now that immunizations are mandated they force you through it. It looked like a student run center with - freshman humanities line the front desks and lower ranking interns man the back. terribly coordinated - always unprepared for any questions and the medical tools they use look like rubbish. My favorite part is every time Im put on hold to navigate their awful maze of automation I get deafening silence - so peaceful Btw, the student health plan is very comprehensive - call the "request reference" line and go to a place you really deserve. Oy...I wish I could say something...*anything*...nice about this place, but I can't. If Yelp would allow me to give zero stars, I would do it...yeah, it was REALLY bad for me. Back when I was a student in Irvine, I had to switch from a fabulous doctor back to this place. It's more run like a clinic than an actual doctor's office. Now I know clinics are notorious for having terrible service (I'm seeing a clinic right now because I don't have health insurance), but I resent that I had to go here instead, especially when I was seeing a really good doctor. I do understand that budget issues had a lot to do with this...however, what's with the crappy service, especially since MY insurance (that I willingly paid for) is paying for this?! I might as well go to Planned Parenthood or some other community doctor where I can basically go for free. I really abhor this center; I had to (unexpectedly) use this place 9 times in one quarter for crazy health issues that kept coming up; I don't know how on earth I got so sick in just one quarter, but it could have been due to the fact that I was already sick of Irvine and the rest of Orange County. Here's why I think the UCI Student Center is terrible: -THREE of my appointments could have been cut to ONE if I was properly diagnosed the first time. I had a staph infection that was misdiagnosed as eczema; it got progressively worse and now I have scars on my face that I don't know will ever go away...it's been almost a year and I still have them! (3 appointments; $75 for copayments, NOT including medication...one product that I didn't need because of the initial misdiagnosis). -*Another* appointment was so terrible because she was so booked that I had to wait about an hour and a half to see her; I was almost late for another appointment (not health related) I needed to go to (2 appointments; $50 for copayments, got angry and refused to buy their prescription). -And then ANOTHER doctor had to refer me to an awful obstetrician/gynecologist who is ALWAYS booked and has a very narrowminded view on women and birthing (a very interesting experience; see my other yelp review if you have the chance). Ugh. (4 appointments within 2 months; $100 for copayments, no prescription but other expenses paid at obstetrician's hospital). Unfortunately, I got sick again during the next quarter. I went to them to treat my bronchitis (ugh)...bought some medication that didn't work...thankfully, I didn't have to make another appointment; the doctor prescribed me some antibiotics, so I saved a copayment. Obviously I am incredibly bitter about this place. However, I think I have a right to be, especially since out of the NINE TIMES I've seen them in one quarter (10 if you include the other appointment for the later quarter), they could've had a chance to redeem themselves. Methinks not! Unless you get a morning appointment, this place is usually almost always crowded. You have to wait forever to see a doctor because they have limited time slots. I don't know how anyone gets to see a doctor right away unless they're not new patients. Truly terrible...the center made my UCI experience much more memorable (and I don't mean that in a good way). I strongly recommend buying your own insurance (not the USHIP/GSHIP that the University offers) so you can avoid this "clinic" like the plague. read more

Perfect place to go if you enjoy being yelled at by the staff & love waiting 15 minutes for a scheduled covid test that takes less than a minute to do! :) I've never had to ring a bell before much less wait to get a covid test done here because there's normally someone outside taking tests upon arrival. Had it been calmly explained to me that the bell works & that they are short staffed I would have apologized on my hands & knees for pressing it too many times but instead I was asked condescending questions & then harshly reprimanded for shit I wasn't aware of. Ridiculous, rude employees :) To the nurse who yelled at me claiming my pressing of the bell indicates an emergency, I suggest removing the stick that's clearly wedged up your butt & to maybe consider that had it actually BEEN an emergency, heaven forbid, yelling at someone isn't the best way to go about it. I had never used the bell before, could not hear it ringing, & waited a while with no response when I've never had to wait at all for an appointment for covid testing. It would take less than a minute to come upon the first 1-2 rings of the bell to let whoever is ringing it that they aren't being ignored & that someone will be with them soon. But because you can't seem to do that you leave people to wonder when someone will help them & continue to ring the bell. Don't tell people to ring the bell for assistance, not give them assistance & then get your panties in a twist when they continue to ring for assistance. read more

Really hit or miss when it comes to this place. Sometimes the pharmacists sound like they're coming out of a grave and hate their lives. Other times they're lively. That being said, GSHIP coverage here is pretty awesome. Had to have a bunch of lab tests done and I barely had to pay anything. On top of that, the doctor I chose is really good at what she does. Dr. Csintalan recognizes that I know quite a bit about physiology and works with me to come up with the best treatment. When I asked her about changing treatment, she did not hesitate to do further research to answer my question. Also didn't hesitate to offer me a referral to a specialist. read more

I called their main line on a Monday around 3 PM. If you try to make an appointment, you'll get an automated message saying "The person you want to reach is not available", then if you get asked to transferred to an operator, you'll receive a similar message. Lol, UCI student health center is a joke. I guess they have incompetent administrators or do not have enough of a budget to make sure their operations run smooth. read more

Dr. Csintalan is one of the few doctors that actually care about your well-being. She asked me questions with the intent of getting to the bottom of symptoms. She went above and far beyond what she needed to do for my visit and spent the time to make sure she knew what was going on and that I understood the diagnosis and treatment. I eventually went to have my blood drawn as per Doctor Csintalan's recommendation and Shahrzad was the one who helped do that for me. She was very pleasant and caused me little discomfort in the process (and I hate getting my blood drawn). It was quick and almost painless! I can't speak to the other doctors here, but Dr. Csintalan is absolutely one of the best doctors I've seen period. read more

Dental review: They break your teeth so they can charge you the fix. 1) The dentist numbed my mouth then tested a tooth for pain. I had to remind her that I was numb. 2) Dental assistant Maria perpetually talks and asks you stupid questions even while her hands are in your mouth. 3) They've keep making my teeth worse with $3000 worth of "treatments". I've a tooth grinding problem for a while and started wearing a mouth guard (extremely consistently). They told me a medical one would be better but that they wouldn't cover it. Ended up with a cracked tooth. They said they would do check ups on for free since they'd done a filling on it prior... then they charged me for that saying I misunderstood what was covered in my aftercare. Then, they recommended me a root canal on the tooth even thought there was not consistent or bad pain. Got the root canal and the tooth hurt WORSE. They told me that because the root canal hollows out the tooth that it might be made the crack worse and now I might need to get the tooth extracted. They advised me to get a temporary crown so I can figure out if I need an extraction or if a real crown will suffice. But, it might turn out that the temporary crown feels okay but that the real crown doesn't. So now I might pay for a temp crown, real crown, and get an extraction anyway... Time to find a new dentist. The so-called convenience of the perpetually booked, 2-appointment-max UCI dental is not worth paying $3000 for them to just keep breaking my teeth. read more

This place is totally awesome. Staff is amazing and helpful, doctors are intelligent and caring, and the pharmacy is cheap and fast. I can always get in quickly and I never wait a long time for my appointment. I have had incredibly positive experiences here over my XXX number of years in graduate school at UCI. The only thing that sucks is that the pharmacy is only open until 5 but blame the California budget crisis for that one. read more

I am posting this as a former employee. When I first started here I was so excited to be able to work here. My first day was a great one. I'm always very excited about a new opportunity to work in the medical field as a phlebotomist, I LOVE what I do. But I did not feel that here. I was told by my supervisor Nadar working here would be like working with "family". I've never experienced that. I would go to break & would overhear them calling me lazy, talking under their breath & saying whatever they wanted. I always made sure to try my best to learn the material. The computer system was yearsss out of date for ONE. Loan, always made sure to undermine my skills as a phlebotomist. & I'm pretty sure she is the reason I was let go. (Which was fine, I was miserable here). She never offered to help me. & when she did she took over the whole blood draw & never offered me anything. As a phlebotomist if you cannot get a vein YOU ASK FOR HELP! & that is what I was taught.. & those are my morals. I never felt like I was apart of anything here. They took any chance they could to make sure I was not apart of the health center. Nurses in other departments where nicer than the people I worked in the lab with. The CLS's included! My own coworker took the time out of her day to show me the things I should've been taught by my superiors, that was not her job to do. There was NO TYPE OF TRAINING I was thrown out on my own & was reprimanded when I didn't understand. (Beware of Loan, the worst of the worst) & SHAME on all of you in the Lab, because you all sat there & allowed this to happen & took part! I've never worked in such a toxic environment. & I hope you all see this. I'm posting this for the next phlebotomist! & God forbid she isn't a person of color. Thank you. read more

I can't believe I never reviewed this place after the horrible treatment I received from them. First off, they will try to rip your money off as much as possible even though it is a "student" health center, and you had to pay hundreds for it in your tuition to get their insurance. Last I remembered, they charged me around $20 for copay even if you have their insurance. My own insurance only charges me $10 copay... Secondly, they would prescribe you overpriced medication, ones that you can get for around half the price at other places. I remembered when I got very ill, the nurse practitioner prescribed a whole bunch of medication to me. when I got to the pharmacist, they told me that some inhaler I needed which was covered by the insurance was out of stock... so they had to give me the inhaler that wasn't covered. I paid $35 for an inhaler that I only used for a week or so. I was also given cough medicine, and some other pills to take. For a total, I was charged around $80 that day... Which reminds me, I was NEVER seen by an ACTUAL doctor there every time I had to go to that place. I was either seen by nurses or nurse practitioners. They would always try to make it so that I had to go to the health center multiple times so they could eat the copay off of me. Most of the asian nurses there are straight off bitchy, except for one. One, with a name tag, I believe it was Tram, doesn't smile or greet you. She would mumble while asking me questions, and when I didn't hear what she said, she would raise her voice at me. Another asian nurse looked down on me and had a pretty degrading attitude towards me because I was having problems with a missed period. Anything to do with missed periods and potential signs of "pregnancy", they would immediately look down on you and ask demeaning questions. In these situations, they would only make you pee in a cup and take a pregnancy test, and then say "nope, you aren't pregnant, we don't know what's wrong with you." The pharmacy sucks. Period. One asian lady working there was so rude to me- when I just asked one more question than I should have, she just told me to go back in and ask the doctor, because "I should do what the doctor says". As for appointments, you can NEVER, never seem to get an appointment online, but when you go to their front desk, they suddenly have a spot for you. When you go to your appointments, they make you arrive and check in 15 minutes prior to your appointment time, or else you will probably get some charge for not showing up at your appointment... Then you will have to sit in an extremely small and uncomfortable room for about another 15 minutes before a nurse practitioner decides she wants to see you. She will probably only talk to you for 2-5 minutes and off you go to pay for 2 minutes of their time. Did I mention the last time I sat there waiting, there was a bug(silverfish) crawling around the tools to be used for my PAP SMEAR checkup? Had I not noticed and informed them of so, they would have used those tools inside my body. And yes, the only thing I received was an apology and a sort of self comfort to themselves that they "never have bugs", and "it must have been from the rain". The cashiers are rude as well. They look as if they are debt collectors. Even when they see you waiting in line, they pretend to be busy and make you wait for 5 minutes. I've seen some people who waited for too long and just stood right in front of the cashier. The cashier ignored the person until she decided to take the payment. This is not right at all. They also mess up on taking your payments. I was once told there wasn't any fees, and a week later, a payment request was mailed to me. If you miss the deadline, they will charge a late fee of $20? or $25. There was only one cashier I knew of who was super nice though. I'm not sure if I'm missing anything else, but nothing is good about this place. It is quite evident as I am not the only yelper giving this place 1 stars. read more

Now that I'm in grad school with a different plan for health insurance, I miss how great the health center at UCI was! The staff was always quick and professional, the location is clean and convenient for students, especially those who live in middle earth. I came here before I studied abroad and all my shots for preventative care were covered. ALL THE DENTISTS HERE ARE EXCEPTIONAL!! I can't thank them enough. When I was younger, I used to hate going to the dentists because I've had some pretty traumatizing experiences. I had a lot of appointments here because I never wanted to go to the dentist before I had student health insurance (especially with my previous experiences). In total I've had 6-7 cavities filled here and two root canals done. All procedures were quick and painless, even the root canals! STUDENTS!!! Make sure you take advantage of your insurance before you graduate! The care that they offer at UCI is great! Your insurance covers you year-round, even in the summer. Might as well use it since you're paying for it already anyways, right? read more

Ehh. Grumpy workers, nurses, and doctors, ever-rising prices of co-payments...sigh. I only go here because I have health insurance with UCI, and it's conveniently located near to where I live. This place is definitely more like a clinic than a doctor's office. Appointments have been getting increasingly harder and harder to make here, since more people are flooding the health center for whatever reason. Sometimes, if you walk in and have a urgent reason for needing to see the doctor, you might be able to squeeze into a time slot that is supposedly reserved for same-day appointments. If you have health insurance, best to go elsewhere if you can. read more

I'm always satisfied with the service here. Staff is friendly and thorough. One of the PCPs went well above and beyond my expectations when last I went in due to illness. The system seems pretty streamlined and improvements happen too. The most recently observed improvement is that those with UC Ship no longer have to pay in the office, which is convenient but slightly unfortunate because the regular cashier is quite friendly! You can never get an appointment when you need one, and there is no walk in or urgent care system. If you want to go to an urgent care, you have to get a referral (which is always a pain), or wait until 5:00-- even if the student health center doesn't have an opening that day. I have literally never had a positive experience at this center. One time, I writhed in pain and repeatedly threw up from a migraine while they refused to give me anything but a shot of tramadol. I cried and threw up for four hours on a table in the clinic until they finally gave me my normal medication and I was better within 30 minutes. WELL PLAYED, HEALTHCARE. When I go in for ailments I've had before, every single doctor tries to tell me I don't know what I'm talking about until I force them to look back at my record. They simply don't trust student accounts. It's a true joy. P.S. Just tried to get an appointment for a refill on my migraine medication. The next appointment is in two weeks. In the grand scheme of things this place is not that bad. Pros: Conveniently located near campus and they will validate your parking if you park in their lot Clean environment CHEAP prices if you have USHIP Average quality of care by the nurse practitioners The women who work in the lab are GREAT. They never have missed a vein and are very kind and courteous Cons: The nurses who do your initial evaluation are not very personable and many had no idea why I was there. The wait times are long, I have always waited 20 minutes or more past my appointment time to see a NP 2 of the NP I have seen have been very snotty and condescending, maybe they are being overworked. However, overall quality is similar or slightly better than outside doctors offices so it is hard to complain. Overall, the student health center is good. The reason I love it so much is because of the low co-pay. Use it while your at UCI because you are already paying for it with USHIP. read more

I've been here twice, once to see a Nurse and the other time to see a Doctor. Both were really nice and helpful. The environment though wasn't conducive to any sort of healing. I know the school is lacking money but after coming from Kaiser it's disappointing to have to use the school clinic. Tip: Make the appointment close to when they open because when I had a 9:45 appointment the wait was better. I was there for 30 minutes total from entering the door way to being seen (granted doctor face time was like 5 minutes). The appointment I made in the afternoon was awful, 45 minutes just to see the nurse and then had to wait a long time because they were so busy. read more

I've had great experiences in the past here, but recently I was mortified at what I overheard. I came in to do a check up and as I'm walking down the hall, the doctor exclaims oh yeah she definitely has a ________. As a professional in the medical field, you should have the decency to respect someone's privacy and not tell the whole office the patients results. But what really pissed me off is that as I'm sitting in the exam room, that same doctor walks out of one of the adjacent exam rooms and tells the nurse, "oh man, you should have seen her yesterday" and laughs and walks away. If I can hear you so can the patient. You are so rude! People come to you for help, not to be ridiculed. read more

Ill make it simple, If you have to see a doctor, and you have U-SHIP preferably the UCI student health center is a solid choice to go see especially when you need to settle with an appointment between classes at UCI. In addition, they nurses pack the schedule in, so making an appointment the day of is quite reasonable. Let's start with the one good aspect of this health center: the doctors and nurses. They genuinely care about the students' well-being and are friendly and reassuring. Now for the bad part: EVERYTHING ELSE. First of all, for a general appointment, you're lucky if you can get an appointment within a week; my experience has been having to wait 2 weeks for any appointments. How does it help me to wait that long? Second, I actually have to make a follow-up appointment, and when I went to do so, I was highly disappointed to see they've removed the online scheduling option, which means you have to either call to make an appointment or go into the building to schedule your appointment. Well, I've been on the phone with this place before, and it's a pathetically long wait to get anything straightened out. Furthermore, do the people running this place honestly want me to risk my health to go in and make an appointment there? It seems a little counterintuitive to me. I guess saving that extra buck is that important, as it puts more work on the staff in the office rather than doing upkeep on a website.. Third, and most importantly, if you want to go anywhere outside the student health center, expect to have the most unbelievably difficult and unpleasant experience you've ever had in your life. You have to have a referral to go anywhere else you want, but strangely, the graduate insurance says PPO which means you should be able to go anywhere. Basically they don't want students going somewhere so they can maximize profits. I learned that the hard way. An eye procedure would have cost me thousands of dollars because even though I had a referral from an optometrist to see an ophthalmologist, it ALMOST wasn't recognized because..you guessed it..I didn't go see them about it first. It is MY right to go to the doctor of my choice, and I shouldn't have to get a referral for it. Don't get me wrong; I'm incredibly grateful for the provided health insurance. That being said, the way this place is run is totally unacceptable on all fronts. At my undergrad, I never once encountered a problem like this, so I know it's unique to the SHC. read more

This center is for use by UCI undergraduate and graduate students. I visited here for the first time this week. The doctor I visited is super nice and gentle. She was very good at explaining things and was not condescending at all. When I arrived there was a fast check in process and I did not have to wait for long for my appointment and payment was a breeze. I am glad this is what my insurance arranged for me. read more

When here to have a doctor look at my annoying ganglion (Cyst) and leaving there with recommendation to a specialist Dr. John F Cook Jr in Newport Beach. I was worry that it serious but turn out it was normal the specialist did nothing to relive it just take some x-ray and charged me 1k. Still have the annoying cyst and have to pay copay for that 1k. Beware*** make sure you do some research about your condition because the doctor here don't care especially the associate physician. I learned my lesson. read more

I came here because I needed a referral to see a chiropractor, since I have student health insurance (which is awful- but I'm thankful to have) anyway the doctor I saw totally disregarded the fact that I've been dealing with this issue for several years and know what helps me and what doesn't. He was an MD, only believes in physical therapy which has been a complete waste of time and didn't offer any results. He said he would never refer anyone to a chiropractor. If you can avoid getting student insurance and getting on something else I highly recommend. This has been very frustrating. The staff here treats you like your an idiot just because you are a student. Better off going to urgent care. Awful. Absolutely awful. read more

Their regulations are unacceptable. If a patient is 5 mins late, despite calling in and letting the receptionist know, there will be a $50 charge. On the other hand, you can expect to wait between 15 to 40 mins after being checked in, to see the doctor. Is my time as a patient worth less than the doctors? So done with this place. read more
