I enjoy goung to The Council thrift shops especially this location. Just prepare to be surprised and you'll always find something. Fairly organized, friendly staff. Reasonable price mostly though it can definitely be better. If they can price some things lower it'll move the items more. Unnecessarily rude sales clerks and a very disappointing experience overall. I wish I had read the reviews before purchasing here. The store has a strict no-return policy which I didn't know about, even for non-functional electronics and that creates a catch-22 situation. Electronics are sold without power cables, so you're expected to buy the item first, then purchase a compatible cable separately--only to discover afterward that the item is defective. At that point, you're stuck. When I brought the item back, the sales clerks were dismissive and unnecessarily rude. One of them literally said, "I can't and won't help you," instead of just explaining store policy. What made this even more frustrating is that the same item was back on the shelf a week later, which raises serious concerns about how defective products are handled. Poor customer service and questionable practices. Proceed with caution before buying anything electronic here. read more

I would say this place's prices sits between your regular thrift shop and a consignment store. The big catch is that there are no fitting rooms, returns, or exchanges. There's definitely a ton of clothes to look through, but with slightly higher prices than a normal thrift store (and a lot of branded stuff ranging from Lululemon to DVF marked-up even higher as a "popular brands"), it's a bit risky to purchase. In terms of clothing, I would only recommend this store for anything that you can try on over your clothes (jackets, sweaters, etc.). Don't donate your clothing here as they will deface and ruin them. They put the plastic price tags all over the clothing leaving holes that were not there when you donate. Also if they price the item higher than their normal pricing they will put a red dot on the label that they claim is washable and when you get home and wash the item the red will run and ruin your clothes and is impossible to get off and will smear all over the label. Please come up with a better system to tag items you want a larger profit without ruining the item!!! The prices are super high and sometimes more than the retail price. No trying on clothing, no returns and you will be charged tax since they are for profit. read more

I came during the start of the Labor Day Sale and I've never found so many unique and quality items for such a great value. Other chain thrift stores have raised their prices, but not the quality of product, while this store had one gem after another. I can't wait to see what I find there next time. Decent selection. For clothes, the prices are set depending on the type of item (short sleeved women's shops are all like $6, women's coats all $20, women's jackets all $10). Maybe you could find a great bargain with these flat rates but some of those coats should be way below $20. Compared to the Goodwill nearby, these clothes tend to be in much better condition and of higher quality. I ended up getting a couple of wicker baskets that were really cute, one for 99c and one for $3. They also have small plant pots and some interesting books. Overall, I would come here for the smaller items but not the clothes. read more

This thrift store was okay. Prices seemed a bit high, for the most part, clothing was no cheaper than $6.00 no matter the condition of the garment. They employed a basically flat fee structure for most items. The clothing was loosely organized but probably could be improved. I didn't really find anything of interest here. Thrift stores can be hit or miss though so maybe check back every few weeks if you're really wanting to find something! read more

You don't even deserve a star. Don't go to this shit hole place. Their employees air out dirty laundry about their coworkers. My friend was in line to pay and the cashier was like oh I'm sorry this person was waiting. That person was walking around and getting in and out of line. So it's okay to get in and out of line and cut people who are in line properly. I agree w/some of the negative reviews. It's very un-welcoming, I came in and got ignored, while another lady came in and got greeted. Sadly, for me being who I am (and I'm not going any further w/this) it's common. I guess it's how you look/or first impression of the eye of "particular" beholder that gets you acknowledged. I'm still giving this store a chance, because despite it's short comings, they actually had good stuff, cute stuff and prices although not thrift worthy, were still doable. Found this store accidentally on my way to the Goodwill nearby. Hadn't planned on stopping in but I like their other store on Veteran and there was an empty metered spot with 5 minutes left on it (and who in their right minds would pass that up?) As with all thrift stores, it can be really hit or miss depending on what had just been donated and how many people have their eyes on the same items and snatch them up before you get to them. When luck is on your side though, you can get an AWESOME deal on unique and NEW items here. When I popped in, I was able to find a plaque that was perfect as a gift, a new package of 10 popcorn holders (for the popcorn party I plan to old one day :P), a new pack of index cards for $0.25, and a stack of new 12" x 15.5" manila envelopes for crafting/packaging. I was in and out in 7 min (good thing the meter maid didn't come by in those last 2 min). What I like about this NCJWLA more than the one on Veteran is that they seem a little more chill so you have a bit more space to negotiate on prices for unmarked items. At the register, I asked how much the envelopes were. When she said $0.25 each, I asked if I could them for $0.20 each and if so, I would buy 10 instead of 5. She gave it to me - yay! Never hurts to drop in for a quick look if you're ever nearby! read more

Last week I had something unfortunate happened to me but thanks to the staff here they did absolutely everything they could to help me find my phone that was stolen in the store. They called it from several different places, turned off music so that I could look for my cell phone, and even expressed concern and allowed me to frantically look around the store for about 30 minutes. I didn't end up catching the person they got away with my cell phone, but just the fact that the staff was willing to help me and made me feel like my items were worth protecting was something that definitely didn't go unnoticed. On more than one occasion, I've seen every single one of these individuals act with grace, dignity, and respect in occasions that sometimes are a little bit difficult to display such affects. 'I LOVE L.A.!!!', or so goes the Randy Newman song. Council Thrift Shops is certainly one of the reasons I love going to Los Angeles. Or maybe I shouldn't love it so much since I always find a GREAT bargain to purchase. Designer duds, furniture, books, there's something for everyone at reasonable prices in a pleasant environment. The staff is always helpful and with a ready smile... and if all goes as planned I'll probably furnish my future L.A. apartment from purchases at Council Thrift Shops. I'll have to hit the other locations to see what the options are, an exciting 'To Do' item for the future... Vegas thrift stores should take a cue and reduce their prices accordingly, because they're way overpriced here in the valley and without the designer labels or the quality of furnishings. read more

I was up at UCLA today with my son. I decided I'd take a look at some local thrift stores and here's my story. HaaHHAAAHhhaaaaHaHaa........oohhh......ok, I'm under control now although my sides hurt from laughing so hard. A thrift store, for real? I can't believe they call this a "Thrift Store." I'm a thrift store connoisseur and THIS place is NO thrift store my friends. Don't even bother to search for parking for this place. For the prices they are charging, go to Macy's or Target for God's sake. They keep stuff normally on display at a Goodwill behind the counter where you can't see it let alone touch it. Walk up the street to the Goodwill. It is VERY clean and well organized. Plus, they actually have customers. Why? Because they charge thrift store prices, not Macy's prices. read more

The store itself could have once been a furniture store with high ceilings, dingy fluorescent lighting, built on the broken dreams of clothes that once had potential but failed. The selection was shabby, the prices too high, and its almost hidden along the street, we saw the back entrance first if that gives you a clue of how unmarked this place is. My friend wanted a skirt but it was torn, broken zipper, missing a button and $25 dollars, really?. I didnt see anything that constitutes interesting or chic, and they had a lot of old books, and VHS', c'mon who wants to watch old unknown cartoons? The only bike i saw was $50 bucks and not even a normal bike, it was a strange mini trick bike that was just awful. The furniture was worn, and hideous. I like a good vintage table, there were none to be had. The store favors women's clothing but in that regard its something i wouldn't dress my dog in. The mens section was lacking, a complete absence of functional shoes, and the jeans where in poor shape This store seems to take the clothes others thrift stores didnt want. Passing by, a Miro print in the window caught my eye, so I popped in here for a quick looksee. This place is great! There are some very quality items; I found a pair of blue and white candle sticks, very old dutch china style, and the Miro print was even better up close. I also found a previously owned CD by The Original Booty Burglars, no lie. I know, it's amazing that I didn't secure that purchase right there and then, but I held off somehow. Prices here are a bit higher than the Goodwill down the street, but the quality is also a bit better here. Check out both for some good treasure-hunting fun. read more

A lot of designer items mixed in with an absolute ton of crap. Pricing is all over the damn place, but you can get some great deals. Like my best find - a pair of Helmut Lang suede flats in excellent condition for just 30 dollars. Thirty, yo. My aunt found a gorgeous leather jacket that looked brand new for 40 bucks. The ladies working the shop were firm, but seemed fair. They weren't giving out discounts whether you begged, bargained, or threatened them; all three happened during the 30 minutes I was in the shop. They managed to keep the line moving despite the best efforts of a young woman throwing a fit in line - Juicy tracksuit, tiny dog and all. It was truly a sight to behold. I have been donating to this particular location for the past 10 years. I always pull up my car in the back and I have always been helped by an employee. Cory is by far the best manager I have ever dealt with. The employees are super friendly and they always help me by coming to my car as I have lots of bags to donate and they literally help me by taking each bag out of my car and always hands me a receipt for my own files. I've never had an issue and will continue to donate everything to them. The only thing they don't accept as donations is kids toys which I understand bc of the metal certain toys have etc.. but other than that it's a great organization to donate to. I assume that when people shop at a thrift store they expect things to be cheap... this store is not cheap. Not too wide of a selection and things were priced much higher than I'm used to. Also, if a thrift store is super organized and clean (like the Out of the Closet chain), I'm usually more willing to shell out a few more bucks. But this one wasn't. Do yourself a favor and visit Out of the Closet (which isn't too far and very fairly priced) or my all-time favorite- American Way in Toluca Lake! read more

They have a few locations, some are much better than others, and the prices are all over the map. All-in-all, I have to admit I love this place. I purchased my mint condition, perfectly -tailored- to- fit- my-body wedding dress here for $25. It was a couture dress from a local Beverly Hills designer.. their dresses start at $3,000. Other amazing finds include: Valentino a-line skirt- $20, Versace tulip skirt - $35, Theory Slacks - $17, Tahari Slacks- $7, Citizen jeans $7, AG Jeans - $7. All in like-new condition. When the deals are good, they're really good - but you REALLY have to hunt...and know your merchandise, I've found many things here that are priced ABOVE normal retail price. Major drawbacks: In general their furniture and housewares are outrageously overpriced. The women who work here are rude, combative, aggressive, and a total pain in the ass. read more

UPDATE! Just went to their Best of the Best sale last weekend and scored on a brand new Diane vonFurstenburg dress, my favorite designer, for 45 dollars as well as two pairs of earrings, one 10 dollars and one 5. There were Chanel pieces and Manolos and I had to add a star because of the fabulousness of the sale! Pretty disappointing compared to their other location on the same street on the other side of the 405. Street parking only and beware of the street cleaning days... The store is brand new, recently relocated from a location a couple blocks east. The space is very raw and cavernous and I thought, for sure, full of hidden treasures, but all I found was an Oscar de la Renta skirt for 25 dollars and two pieces of Pyrex, which I collect, for 1.50 apiece. If it wasn't for these finds, I probably would have given it only 2 stars. The lady behind the counter was slightly rude, but then, it could just be that the customer before me was trying to haggle with their prices, something they don't allow. I would probably only go back here because it is so close to the Goodwill I frequent. Nothing special yet, but it is a new store after all. Give them some time to grow. Happy hunting! read more

The one to check for the best finds is the shop on Santa Monica Boulevard. This is the one where wealthy ladies in the adjacent Beverly Hills, Santa Monica and affluent West Side Communities drop of their cast-offs. I have bought a great Jil Sander jacket, Bruno M shoes, designer handbags and a haute couture, hand sewn, vintage dress that Jackie O would COVET. The other location in the valley and on Farifax have finds too, but the Mother Lode is the shop on Santa Monica Blvd. Worth a look if you have the time to weed through the racks. read more
