The members and staff are very helpful when you have questions and there's a wide selection of tools to use that most people wouldn't have the space or funds to access on their own otherwise. You do need to take a class before using each type of tool / equipment to ensure you're using everything properly and safely, which is totally reasonable. The classes are reasonably priced as well. If you're looking to learn new things and have a creative environment to work in, I'd definitely recommend checking them out.

As I looked through my yelp bookmarks, it said yelpers reported this place "closed" sad face. I hate when that happens. So I deleted it from my bookmarks. I still need to head over to that area, to my surprise as I drove pass it, it say OPEN!!!! Yay!! I parked on the street and checked it out. Cute cafe!! Handful of baked goods, sandwiches, and snacks. I enjoyed my coffee. Also has vintage clothing for sale and pinball machines. It was fairly quiet when I came by. I also has an almond croissant which was also delightful. Overall I really like this cafe. I will drop by again if I am in the area.

Went to playland today with the idea in mind that the passes we bought were for admission + rides…read more Nowhere on any sign on the premises, or on the website where you purchase tickets did it say we were paying for GENERAL ADMISSION only. We were unable to go on any rides, and one supervisor told us it was our fault because we didn't read the sign posted on the ticket booth (in person). I went to double check, and there was no signage posted indicating that we were paying for only general admission. It wasn't the staffs fault at all, as it does say no refunds, and all the staff were super pleasant and understanding, but we just wished that it was extremely clear that during certain weeks of the month, entrance was admission only. Was super upsetting to hear that. Again, staff were super pleasant and gave us some coupons to still get on rides, and we really appreciated it. While waiting for one of the roller coasters, a group of 4 young boys (approx 8 y/o) were cutting in line SPECIFICALLY in front of my boyfriend and I, and seemed to find it funny to do so. One of the boys moms saw this and looked at us and shrugged. She did NOTHING to discipline her children. These kids seemed to be targeting my boyfriend and I, and would only cut in front of us. At one point, they were climbing over the metal bars so they could get back in front of this. They didn't stop, so eventually I yelled at them once they started trying to SHOVE past us. We told the ride operator, and thankfully they weren't let on. Leaving the ride, the families of the kids were extremely rude to us and got mad at us, yelled at us and made gestures. Why is it our fault that your kids are extremely rude and have no manners? After yelling at the kid, they were laughing and smacking their butts at my boyfriend and I. I wish there was more security around, and that there were stricter policies on younger children being granted the privilege to ride in adult-majority spaces. Words can't describe how rude and disgusting these children and their families were being towards us. This entire experience made us not ever want to come back. I couldn't imagine if we had paid over $100 for entry + the ride pass and we had the same experience of these kids and their families harassing us. Absolutely disgusting.

I had a blast on their thrill rides such as the OG wooden roller coaster which was built way before we were born in 1958...yup, its age does add an extra rocky and spooky element when you are on this ride. Their mini golf course was cute and with enough challenging designs for family fun. Hole in one at hole 16 and 17 was a thoughtful and encouraging design too. Paid parking available and free street parking is possible if you park further away. Staff is overall quite friendly. Vendor foods' costs are of course usually higher at an amusement park but hot dogs, burgers, pizza, donuts and cotton candy are the standard food options at an amusement park. Tips: Recommend to visit on a less sunny or even cloudy day to avoid the heat while in lineup. Do bring a hat or sunscreen on sunny days and stay hydrated. Look for online promotion when buying admission tickets for better value and please don't compare Playland to Disneyland. I chose to visit Playland when PNE is not open for less crowds and spent about half a day there. Put your hands up on the rides and scream for a good time :)

We had some time to kill during our trip, so I booked a time for my group to come in. It is a pretty small spot, but it is well thought out "gallery" to take fun or silly photos with your group (or date). It's like different backdrops for you to take your own photos. Plan to spend at least 30-45 minutes, so that you are not in a rush. You'll want to try different poses and angles for each space/scene/exhibit. My fave was probably the anti-gravity room, the optical illusion space (the one where each side makes a person look super big/tall and the other side shrinks the person, like Alice in Wonderland). Don't miss the mirrored room towards the back. Reservations are a must, at least currently, they don't take walk ins.

It was $25 for AYCE wings but it also included a $10 credit to play any of their arcade games. That's a pretty good deal in our opinions! I don't know the entire history of the theatre, but apparently it was built in 1938. The Rio is known for screening cult classic movies and live shows, and in 2012, it fought the outdated BC Liquor board so that movie theatres could serve alcohol -- a big win! In the past, I have gone to a handful of shows (mostly movies showing at the Vancouver International Film Festival), but I didn't go often for two reasons: many of the movies I was interested in started way too late for me (such as at 9:30pm or 11pm), and years ago, I had a really negative experience. I don't recall when the incident happened -- perhaps it was after they had acquired a liquor licence -- but you had to be 19+ to go (that's the legal drinking age here), and while I was much older than 19, apparently I looked young, so I used to get so much shit for my appearance. Shortly before the event, my ID had expired and I was waiting for a new one to come in the mail. In the meantime, I was using my passport as ID. The person at the door was extremely rude and aggressive and made a big deal of specifically asking ME for ID -- from his tone, I think he didn't expect me to be of age. I pulled out my wallet from my purse to grab my ID, then remembered that I didn't have it as it was being renewed, so put it back into my purse and reached for my passport. As I was reaching for my passport, the rude and aggressive employee sneered, "Oh, you forgot your ID, I see, huh?" Yes, even thought this was nearly 15 years ago, I still remember this incident, and it always upset me. The guy was so fucking rude. Also, they used to insist on stamping your hand, and I hate having the inside of my wrist stamped because the ink rubs off on the side of my shirt, so prefer to have the top of my hand stamped. This guy was also rude about this. Anyway, due to events not working with my schedule and my encounter with the rude employee, I had little interest in going to the Rio unless it was for the film festival. However, recently, there have been several events I have been interested in: a screening of The Shawshank Redemption with a Q&A with Gil Bellows in July; a screening of The Room presented by Greg Sestero in August; a screening of Clue in October; a screening of the original Carrie presented by Mike Flanagan in October; and a film festival movie in October. And each time I had a great experience -- no more rude and aggressive employees! The most recent event I went to was John Waters live on December 3. My husband is a huge John Waters fan, so I bought tickets for his show. However, I had only bought the regular tickets, and my husband then told me he would have liked the VIP tickets (better seats, a signed poster, a post-show Q&A). On the Rio website, they clearly state that all sales are final and that tickets cannot be returned or exchanged. So what did I do? Emailed them asking if I could exchange the regular tickets for the more expensive VIP tickets, despite their policy. Their answer was an enthusiastic "absolutely!" and it was easy to exchange the tickets. Amazing customer service! I am a fan of the Rio and I look forward to seeing more shows and events! This tiny, one room, CoOp run platform for local talent has determination in it's name and respectable talent to keep your eye on. I attended my 2nd show recently that included a variety of mixed media artworks by 4 or 5 UBC graduates. This show was part of an underground art crawl called #SWARM13. Discovery: Passing by one day I noticed the ad board out front. It really caught my eye. We don't have anything else like this locally so it's pretty exciting. I went that early summer evening for a contemporary art show that included a feminist monologue along with an unusual, interactive tee shirt exchange. Really hard to describe in that it was very 'outside the box' I'm SO glad I went, even though I didn't know what to expect and I was amazed by the talent. This art and theater venue has SO much potential, I can't wait to go back for another show or event there. Even maybe help out or facilitate an event myself! It's inside a building, but signage outside is small and not very clear, so it took a bit of wandering before I even found the line. I actually even passed the building up while walking. I needed to use the restroom before going up and saw signage for the one near the food court. Honestly, it was absolutely disgusting and didn't have paper towels. I ended up walking completely out. When I asked the lookout staff about a restroom, I was initially told there wasn't one. Then once they asked if I was intending on buying a ticket, it suddenly appeared that there all of a sudden was a restroom available upstairs. Hmmm but at any rate, it was a completely different experience from the first restroom. Thank goodness. The lookout itself feels dated. You do get a full bird's-eye view of the city, but there wasn't anything especially exciting or memorable about it. They also charged more than what was posted on the signage, so it looks like a recent price increase, $24 CAD mid June. Overall, if you go in with low expectations and just want a quick view of the city, it's fine. But I wouldn't call it a must-do in Vancouver.

Exploring science museums is one of my hobbies whenever I travel, and I really enjoyed Science…read moreWorld; the FIFA theme was cool to see. Buying tickets was pretty easy at the counter, and they asked if there was intent on exiting and re-entering - of course not, one go! Compared to other science museums that I've been to, Science World feels smaller, probably because it is mainly one large floor with a ground level. However, it's very spacious and has many interactive and interesting pieces. My favorites were the flipbooks to learn about the human body, the tactile demonstrations of hinges in the body, and the amount of many integrations of physics and music / sound. One critique is that it felt more biology and physics heavy than chemistry, but the variety of stations that they did have were very impressive. Some outstanding ones on the chemistry side include their geology exhibit, including crystal structures. The ecology and earth science stations were also fun to explore. By the window, there's also a nice view of the bay / pier. It looks like there are a few things downstairs, although there aren't too many signs for it. My friend and I actually got lost and had to ask for re-entry - oops! Coming with children? They have some neat children exhibits, too, including a little treehouse!

On the southeast False Creek seawall, just east of the Cambie Bridge, is the strangest, coolest art…read moreinstallation around. (It's actually visible from the Cambie Bridge if you are walking across it. It's practically right below the bridge, just off a bit to the side, if you're looking toward the Science Center, close to the VPD parking lot site). In truth, I had passed this structure many times before really noticing it, as it's comprised of large neon letters that spell out "SHOULD I BE WORRIED?" atop of a wooden support beam, and these wooden planks blend in with the craggy site at the shoreline here below the bridge (and of course the neon letters aren't illuminated during the daytime hours). So it's easy to miss during the day. Then, one day, I noticed the sentence atop the beams and now I am fixated on this piece whenever I pass it, when I walk on the seawall in this area between Athlete's Village and Spyglass Place, or when I cross the Cambie Bridge on foot. I keep on wondering, SHOULD I be worried? Should I? And, if so, about WHAT, exactly? There are so many possible stressors to worry about. Should I worry about them all? Prioritize them? Just deal with a few? Or perhaps not worry at all? To me, this work is both whimsical and provocative and it really makes me wonder what exactly should I be worrying about. It's simultaneously humorous and serious. It both blends in to its environment (by way of the rough, unfinished wooden support structure) and it also stands out (by way of the neon letters). In so many ways, it embodies dichotomies and contrasts. One can appreciate it at face value or one can ruminate on its possible deeper meanings. This piece was installed here fairly recently, in 2017, and the artist, Justin Langlois, is a professor and associate dean at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design. He was/is concerned with many of Vancouver's social and economic issues, and his art reflects that. Should we be worried? Check out this art piece, and you tell me! *NOTE: FYI I did not take the awesome photo of this art installation; rather, it is a stock photo, found online on multiple sites (including the City of Vancouver's official site, under its public art tab, and also online in every article about this art piece).
