I wish I could give this museum more than three stars, because I love museums and opportunities to learn about world cultures. But my friend and I visited the Ukrainian Museum last Saturday, and, other than beautiful building, there just wasn't much to see! Admission is $15 per person, but we were in and out in less than 20 minutes. There is a small gallery upstairs, which housed one single contemporary piece. The basement gallery has some pottery and ceramics, but is really just a hallway gallery on the way to some classroom space on that level. So that leaves the main level, which had a simple exhibit on Volodymyr Tatlin, a Ukrainian artist and founder of Constructivism, Even this exhibit had very few pieces or artifacts, but some signage about his life and works. The museum is beautiful, but there just wasn't much in it (especially for a $15 admission). I probably wouldn't visit again unless they had an exhibit I was very interested in, given the size. read more

Ukrainian Museum in East Village - New York's hidden gem. My personal favorites: Alexander Archipenko selected works presented in the first-floor gallery and ongoing exhibition of pysanky, drawn from the museum's extensive permanent collection Contemporary artist Christina Saj Farrell presented her "RE: Create." An exhibition of artworks (painted magnetic boards) that can be enhanced with provided art staples, customized, and transformed into new art pieces. A very engaging and fun experience that I highly recommend for children of all ages (2-92 yrs.) This is a hidden treasure in NY. I didn't know it existed until I was learning about Ukraine with my child. They have contemporary artists displayed on two levels of this new and airy museum. But make sure to go to the basement to see the fabulous collection of painted Easter eggs, pysanky. The museum also offers workshops on occasion. There is a small gift shop. I picked up a kit to make pysanky at home. Once you're done learning about Ukrainian art, head over for some Ukrainian food in the neighborhood restaurants! read more

This is a small, but beautiful museum. At an $8 admission, I would say that it's worth a visit. You won't need long to see everything, and I wish it were a little bigger, but the items that they did have on display were very beautiful and thought provoking. The museum is focused on displaying modern and contemporary decorative art until the end of September. I loved the selection of Ukrainian high-fashion clothing, and the Easter Eggs. read more

A major disappointment. The huge building is virtually empty. The main exhibition showcases only various types of Rushnyk (an embroidered towel, basically) and Pysanka (an Easter egg) and tells a story of how the League of Ukrainian Women in North America contrived to have a Ukrainian pavilion at the World Exhibition in Chicago in 1932. Surely, there were more important causes for someone who considered themselved an ethnic Ukrainian, what with the apocalyptic famine back in the Soviet Ukraine. Yet there was none of this when I visited back in April, although there is now a special exhibit on Holodomor (the Ukrainian for that famine), laid on for a limited time only apparently. If you are interested in Ukrainian culture and history, there are more satisfying places to feed your appetite in this neighbourhood, but this Museum is not worth the $8 entrance fee it now charges. read more

This is a lovely museum with interesting exhibits in an elegant setting. The gift shop is also very nice.

I feel kind of silly writing a review for a museum because you sort of know what to expect and exhibitions change often so anything that I really enjoyed may be gone when you read this and decide to go. That being said I feel like the Ukrainian museum does an excellent job of showcasing aspects of Ukrainian culture - whatever on display is interesting and well curated. It's a small museum - don't expect to spend more then two hours (and that's if you're a big fan) but that makes it accessible. Drop in on a quiet afternoon, admire some art and learn something new. read more

Brought some acquaintances here today to the pysanky workshop and we had a blast! Those elaborate designs are not easy to make with wax on an egg, but everyone was very cheerful and we really enjoyed our time at the Ukrainian Museum. Aside from interesting exhibitions (right now there is one on wedding textiles, and also one on Chornobyl), the museum offers a number of workshops and events, which are a very neat way to learn more about the culture and experience something new. You don't have to be or speak Ukrainian to take advantage of the offerings here - everyone is very open and eager to share the Ukrainian traditions and culture with others. Two thumbs up! read more

somewhat small but quite nice museum, heavy on Ukrainian folk art. there are 2 floors , when I went yesterday there were two exhibits, each occupying a whole floor , one of traditional Ukrainian woven wool rugs called Kilims and how they are made and one of modern art by a Ukrainian-Canadian artist. A small exhibit about Ukrainian Christmas observance traditions occupies a small room by the entrance. The very charming young Ukrainian woman who collected the admission price ($8) was quite friendly and patient in answering questions. The whole museum likely won't take you more than 30-45 minutes to check out unless you have a very strong interest in a particular exhibit they have, but it is nice. Apparently they have a big collection of Ukrainian folk art so I gather they rotate what they show. There is a very nice gift shop by the entrance. Conveniently located nearby are a couple of authentic Ukrainian restaurants (Veselka being one) in case you want to accompany your Ukrainian cultural experience with a meal. read more

This is one of those hidden spots in the city. I went here to see the kilim exhibit, and it was very interesting. I love learning about different cultures, so I really enjoyed it. The decorated egg exhibit is interesting too. I'd like to learn more about it. read more

A very small museum in LES that I had no idea existed until yesterday. I like to take my time in museums, and in this place I managed to cover everything in about a half an hour. When I went, the works of Borys Kosarev was on display, and while I'm a fan of modern art, it wasn't super dynamic. I'm glad I got to explore this place. read more

Authentic and wonderful. I've visited often and bought beautiful pysanky and books. There is a lot to see and do. Brought a Russian friend who had lived in NCY for decades and did not know of this jewel tucked away in a cozy neighborhood. Many exhibits from traditional folk art to modern, contemporary. Workshops of all kinds. Helps to preserve a rich and proud heritage of Ukrainian art. read more

I visited this place because I like learning about different cultures and religions and am sad to say that it was a disappointment. the kilim exhibit was somewhat interesting but small and the only other exhibit was by a Canadian art professor named Ron. I like to take my time but was in and out in half an hour. waste of time and $8. read more

Great place to learn about Ukrainian culture. The museum has a gift shop and place for various classes where on can learn about how to make Easter eggs, folk dolls, etc. Exhibits vary, but the place has historically had famous sculpture, historical and modern art exhibits. Of coarse, they also have the museum folk art collection with various Ukrainian costumes embroidery, etc. For museum lovers i would recommend. read more
