I really wanted to like this place and I was excited to find a Ukrainian restaurant on our way back to Toronto from Detroit. However, you are eating leftover food. Everything was pre-made days ago and the owner just puts it in the microwave. Even the rice is made awhile back. I am sure this place was good 20 years ago but the owner is all alone running the kitchen. The restaurant is also very old and dirty. Tables are not clean after each guest. What a treat this was. A truly unique dining experience that all should come try for themselves. You sit down- basically in a living room converted into a dining room. You go up to the counter and order your food from the sweetest elderly woman running the whole show, Anna. She mentioned to me that she is almost 90 years old! Make sure to call ahead of time, just to let her know you'll be coming and how many in your party. She told us she appreciates this as it helps her to prepare. The menu does have many options, but we were limited to whatever Anna decided to cook that day. We had the stuffed peppers, borscht, chicken stew (so delicious!) and pierogi. Ask in advance what she has ready to make. Affordability was the cherry on top, as the two of us ate until we couldn't eat anymore for under $35 CAD. After a pleasant after-dinner conversation with Anna, we talked about this experience our entire ride back home. We were honored to eat her food! In terms of unique dining experiences, this is high on my list. The Ukranian Restaurant is in what appears to be an entirely residential area, situated between homes, a little bit southeast of downtown Windsor. As far as I could tell, the restaurant is solely owned and operated by a very intelligent, articulate woman in her 90s. She's also the waitress. And the chef. We (three of us) sat in one of a few empty booths and ordered quite a lot of food: cabbage rolls, perogies, sausage, beef stew, and apple strudel for dessert. There isn't much in the way of drinks, so we got a can of iced tea and a bottle of water. The food looks average - nothing fancy. The taste is fantastic, though! We particularly enjoyed the sausage and beef stew. Really delicious. If you're looking for a very different experience with great food and a smallish bill, this place is worth a visit. (Maybe call in advance and ensure it will be open first, though. It was not exactly hopping when we ate there.) read more

Yes, this place if FOR REAL !! I decided to try this restaurant whilst in Windsor this past weekend after reading these YELP reviews. I used YELP on my phone to provide GPS guidance and thought it was directing me incorrectly when it stated that my destination was 200 feet ahead. I was on a residential street!?! Then I saw the sign. Well, I guess I'm here. THE SMELL...... I was transported into my memories of vacations to eastern Europe. I knew that the food had to be homemade and was ready for a sweet old lady to come out from the kitchen. There she was! A nice woman walked over to us, she seemed to be the owner and was obviously the only person there to do the serving/cooking/cleaning. The menu was organized a little difficult to understand, but whatever you order will be good. The plating is less-than-beautiful and was on very small dishes. This place was decorated years ago and hasn't changed a bit. The room, with tan and yellow tiled walls and floors was cold and seating was a bit haphazard. The water barely worked in the tiny restrooms and there was no music. The funny thing though, is that all of these would be detractors just added to my enjoyment of Ukrainian Restaurant! Great REAL food, traditionally prepared. An ambiance so authentic that it may shock some visitors. I had massive issues at the Canadian border en route to Ukrainian Restaurant - its hard to tell when Canadians aren't joking - but it was worth it! If you go to Ukrainian Restaurant, you experience having Ukrainian grandmothers. The food is carefully prepared, based on authentic, traditional recipes. The golubtsi (cabbage rolls) were terrific. They carried kinda red pepper and strong onion spice. Also, as the grandmother notified me, other cabbage rolls have too much rice and not enough meat. These came through; high quality and filling. The borchst was similar to other Ukrainian borchst except it also had a sweet buttery taste - very nice, no? So, go to this place...and Canadians, please be patient with foreigners. This restaurant is just like going to grandma's for dinner. The food is all prepped from scratch. She is great with kids. She made homemade applesauce for my son just as a nice gesture! The only downside here is that it is cash only and there is no convenient way to get cash nearby. This is one of the most incredible restaurants I've ever been to. We called close to 9pm to see if they would still serve us. Anna, the woman who owns the restaurant, told us yes she would still stay open, and what soups would we like so she can start on them while we are on our way? She is very sweet. The second you walk in the house on a residential street (but clearly labeled) you feel warm and are overwhelmed with the smell of delicious home-cooked food. You also feel as though you have just walked into another part of the world! We had a very nice chat with Anna, who came to Windsor 50 years ago from Yugoslavia. The restaurant opened in 1921, and she bought it in the 1960s/70s when the owners were too old to manage it anymore. She is not Ukrainian, but they told her not to change the name of the restaurant or the menu, because she would lose her customers if she did! So she cooks the same Ukrainian menu today, but with her own Slovak-style touch. She speaks multiple languages and can understand Ukrainian, "but not if they speak very fast!" It was such a pleasure talking to her, and I will definitely come again soon for both the delicious food, and also to talk to Anna again. As a vegetarian, I can't each much more than the beet borsch and the pierogies, but I'm totally okay with that. My boyfriend got the beef stew and the chicken noodle soup, and he claimed it was just like his grandma used to make. I bet the desserts are amazing, too. read more

A quaint home style restaurant, staffed by a charming old lady. She does it all. Perhaps on a busy evening she has help, I don't know. Limited menu, but clearly quality food being served. I ordered, chicken soup, beed stew and perogies. The décor is an authentic Ukraine home kitchen dinning room. Heirloom dishes on the wall, hand stitched linen table cloths (under plexiglass) and large authentic Ukraine embroidery pictures framed and hanging for view. The restaurant first opened in 1928, and the lady serving me has been working in the restaurant since 1968. The chicken soup had great flavor, delicious carrots and onions, a morcal of chicken was nicely tucked into the rice. She brought me sourbread with butter and sour cream on the side. The perogies are home made, the beef stew has a mild pleasant aroma with a wonderful peparika kick to its flavor. This restaurant is supposedly the oldest restaurant in Windsor, pushing 80 years. Since the interior looks like it hasn't been touched since the 40s, I believe it. The entire operation seems to be run singlehandedly by one motherly Ukranian woman. MMmmm does she do a good job. When we called to ask about our seven-person group, she asked on the phone if we were going to have pierogi. We were a bit confused until she explained that she needed to start making them now if we were! That's what I call fresh. Everything we had here was wonderful: homemade sausage and sauerkraut, borscht, cabbage chicken soup, smoked ribs (SO TENDER), stuffed peppers, and of course several platters of homemade pierogi. The poor owner had to go back and wash more dishes so she could serve us, that's how tiny this place is. The restaurant must predate city zoning laws, because it's really the ground floor of a house; the owner told us she lives in the back and has several tenants as well. She wasn't the original owner, by the way, she inherited it from the original founder when she moved to the US sometime in the 50s. Don't let the unorthodox façade fool you though, this place is legit and delicious! read more

I have seen in a thread where Brian S had recommended this restaurant as one of the most romantic restaurants for a Valentine's Day date, and I have been to the Ukrainian Restaurant many times in the past, and I would have to agree. It is quiet, quaint and like no other place. It is nothing fancy, it is not fine dining, but no little restaurant has the food to match or the charm that this place has. Nothing in Hamtramck compares to the Ukrainian at all. I am really surprised that there are no fellow Windsorites reviewing the Ukrainian Restaurant ! This restaurant is a gem and one of my favorite places in all of Canada. I have ate all over the Detroit area, Windsor, Toronto, Quebec City and Montreal and this is perhaps the best food there is. One word explains it, "Homemade" !! Food made with a passion. There is no restaurant more deserving of a 5 star review. I have been to the "Ukrainian" many times as I used to live in the Walkerville neighborhood and it was always my father's favorite place to come to. This restaurant is also hidden in a residential neighborhood here on Marion Avenue. It also has been here over 80 years. Anna, is the owner, chef, server and does everything here. Eating here is like eating at Grandmother's house; however, even my own grandmother cannot cook as well as Anna. Anna is very simply a genius in the kitchen. If you are to dine here, I really suggest you call Anna ahead of time and make a reservation... this is highly recommended. Inside, you will feel like you are stepping back in time to some quaint little house in Eastern Europe. The yellow lighting, the ancient quilts and fabrics tucked inside beautiful frames, and hung with quiet pride. It is breathtaking stepping inside. Although this restaurant is the same as it has been since the 1970's, there is not one speck of dirt on the floor, no grime on the ceiling, tables, or walls. The decor speaks volumes of the cultural history that inspires the delicious home-cooked meals that this place specializes in. Now for the food itself, we came here with the intention of ordering a lot of food. To sample as much as we could. I brought two girlfriends here from London, ON who had never been here before and I will admit that my one friend is so hard to please and so damn picky that going out with her is usually a royal pain in the ass. She is the type of woman that will turn her nose up to "Roast" or "Insignia" in downtown Detroit. We started off with the cabbage rolls or sarma which are so delicate and so wonderful. For our soup, we had both the chicken noodle with chunks of chicken and homemade noodles and the cabbage soup. The main courses that we tried were the Perogi, roasted chicken and the smoked pork ribs. The perogi are simple the best I have ever had and so refined. My friend (the picky one) really liked the roasted chicken with rice. She made the statement that the rice was incredible and so good. The smoked pork ribs seemed quite good, but I have had better ribs off the street in Detroit before at a church parking lot off on W Warren and I 96. Anna's ribs are quite good and probably should not be compared to that of Detroit's street side BBQs as her ribs are a little different, but they are good. For dessert, we had Anna's apple strudel and also tried the Dessert perogis which Anna herself suggested and let us sample for free. After having the dessert perogis, we had to order more of them.... they are perhaps the best perogi I have ever had in my life. So tender and so precious. This is one of my favorite restaurants. It had been a while since I have been here and coming here again just served as a reminder to come here more often. I have made it a commitment to come here at least one a month from now on. Anna's prices are very low and one of the reasonable places to eat in Southwestern Ontario. Highly recommended and perhaps one of the very few restaurants I will ever give 5 Stars to. read more

She of course does not have a liquor license, but if you want amazeballs home-cooked food you have to come here. I was not sure what Ukrainian food was, but I never let not knowing what something is get in the way of me eating it. After we put in our orders, I was very concerned about the sounds of the microwave. She cooks out of her own house, which is super quaint. The borscht came out, and my fears were allayed. It was beety deliciousness. My buddy had the pierogies, and the pole in him gave his sign of approval. My chicken entree also came with a side of pierogies - the chicken was slap yo mama good. It would be a very worthy goal to work your way through the menu. Gamgam does things how she does things. If you need sour cream, she gives you a big grocery store tub and a spoon. From nasty white sandwich bread with margarine, to greasy bland food, to a sad, sad ambiance (multiplied with a lack of air conditioning (I visited on a hot summer day) that made everything, including the proprietress, unpleasantly pungent), this place screams for help! Having grown up with proper Ukrainian food (yes, cooked by a real Baba!), I know what things should taste like. This missed the mark. By a longshot. Had to visit Windsor for a concert, and decided to try this quaint restaurant. It is actually an old house, with the owner Anna (85 yrs old) cooking for you. The food is great, and desserts also. The best thing is half portion of 2 or 3 items so that you can try almost everything on the menu. The cabbage soup is to die for. Cash only but the price is pretty low for the food that you get (tax included in the pricing). Don't expect to rush since its only Anna there doing the cooking and serving. The experience is just like visiting a friend who brings you home to eat at Grandma's. You have to get your own drinks from the fridge. My boyfriend and I were at the Caboto club and wanted to look for something new to try, I found this place on yelp and it looks like it have good rating so we decided to give it a try. To be honest when we first arrived we were a bit skeptical, the place was in a neighborhood and it didn't look like it was open but the sign said it was. We went in anyways and it was dimly lit in the dinning area, there was no one to greet us so my bf went to know at this little window thats connected to the kitchen (looks like its used to bring out food) to see if someones in. A old lady came out to greet us and turn on the dinning room lights. The place looks out dated but felt comfortable like a home. The menu is very limited so we made our decision quickly. I got cheese and potato perogies with cabbage rolls and my bf got beef stew. She gave us a pitcher of water and cups from the fridge in the dinning room and gave us both tiny bowls of chicken noodle soup, the soup seems ordinary but you can really taste the flavor and the noodles were nice and chewing, definitely home made. we also got some sour bread and butter on the side which was delish! When our meals came it looks ordinary size, the old lady thought we wouldn't finished but it seem small enough and I was starving! there were so much ingredients in the perogie and cabbage rolls I was stuffed and I couldn't even finish that small meal which surprised me! my bf beef stew was amazing! it's a MUST try dish if you go there! my bf is a BIG eating and he was stuffed as well. We also got small desserts I think it was apple strudels, they were sooo good. I read that the apple sauce is home made and they had it in the strudles omg it was sweet but not drown in sugar and it was freshly made still warm, and the cake was soft not dry. I do recommend this place it give a homely vibe. The most unique restaurant experience I've had in a very long time. I walked in and immediately thought I'd intruded into someone's house in a twin peaks episode. A wonderful lady greeted me as if I was a friend coming over for lunch. She's the only one that works there and could be any one of our grandmas. Eating here was like that. We basically had a 9 course meal but we didn't care -- we kept ordering because we wanted leftovers! We were ready to shell out $80-$100 we ordered sooo much and had soooo soooooo much left over. The damage for the evening? A measly $53 including tax. I am glad I went to this hidden delight! Located 1148 Marion, just north of Giles in a house converted into a restaurant. The day I went, both mother and daughter were working, the service was great and the homemade meal was delicious. I had the cabbage rolls, perogies, and cabbage soup; the meal also came with fresh bread as well as a spicy sauerkraut type spread and sour cream for the perogies. Anna seems to be slowing down based on our experience last night and the reviews from the spring. Delicious food and a great story. She had us self-serve water from the fridge, and asked us to come to the kitchen pass through to receive the food. We did have a nice conversation through that window later in the evening. We went to Canada to celebrate Canada's 150th anniversary on a beautiful summer Saturday. We were the only customers in the restaurant at 6:30 pm. How much longer can she continue? Fifty years of nine open hours, seven days a week. She mentioned that rather than take vacations she'd rather have a few dollars for children. The math is staggering- over 180,000 hours of work. The old lady who runs the restaurant is super sweet and gave us some extra things to try.
