I wanted to take myself out once during this business trip. I knew I wanted something different. That I did not want pizzas, steaks, or burgers. I was looking for a nice sit down restaurant that can allow me to be present and enjoy the quiet ambiance as opposed to chitter/chatter and general noise. I read that reservations are needed. I called Tuesday night and asked if I can get a table w/o one. The gentleman that took the call was very polite and said I can absolutely come in. This was pretty much next to the bookstore I went to on Monday. I didn't even know because I was too wrapped up in the book that I just purchased. I rarely do things like this because I feel guilty for enjoying myself on a work trip. That I away from my kids and my cats. I was seated right away. Service was spectacular. I did not get his name. I enjoyed our exchange. He shared that he lived in San Diego before moving back and checked on me throughout my dining experience. I ordered the kielbasa from the appetizer menu. The grilled onions, pickles, fresh carrots and purple cabbage, especially the mustard made the kielbasa so succulent and savory. I have been craving for pierogi so that was what I ordered as my main entree. I had one of each flavor that they offer. It was a surprise w/ each bite because I did not know which was which. I was surprised I didn't devour the plate. My entree came w/ a fresh salad w/ house made ranch and house made roll (dense but airy!). After I ordered, I marveled at the decor. That rustic and historic vibe. There was a frame that holds music notes from Mozart and a piano to my left. I love how serene and intimate this restaurant was. We've been looking forward to this for days. Turns out we even over-dressed. Technically our second Polish meal in Southeast Michigan and it was fabulous. One descriptor says they serve a Polish fare in an old world atmosphere complete with classical music. Couldn't have said it better. Our new friend Michael explained everything possible to us and made sure every detail was handled all night. Made for a spectacular experience. Schnitzel to pierogis to kielbasa, it was all a triumph. Our group passed around six different dishes and they were all exceptional. Perhaps I've been too hasty in my judgement of this cuisine? Something to put on your bucket list is this Bigos dish. It's Polish hunter's stew and it is out of this world! Ya gotta like sauerkraut. This place has charm that is hard to resist. More than 6 years after my first visit, it's time for an update. I have since been for brunch (which isn't currently offered) and recently decided to return for dinner. Arriving on a chilly weekday night, we were promptly seated and chose a table towards the back to avoid the draft near the door. I had reviewed the menu in advance and had an idea of what I wanted. My companions chose different dishes and we were all able to share. We started with the large pierogi plate and sampled a little of each. The variety was fun and the flavors were all well-balanced. Next came the light dinner salad with a side of homemade buttermilk ranch, a great segue to a heavier entree. I got the cabbage rolls but also was able to sample the kielbasa and the chicken. I actually think the kielbasa would be my pick next time, or even the polish plate so that I could have those plus the cabbage rolls. We couldn't resist dessert, and for a chocolate mousse and a mango dessert to share. The mango won hands-down for flavor and light texture. I'm torn here. It's upscale and definitely has a European casual off hand type elegance vibe. Beautiful setting, music, service. On experience alone it's definitely bringing it. It's not cheap but thats not the main issue. The food is ok but does not sing at all. It's not that comforting, rich but tangy soul satisfying grandma food that I want from this cuisine. It's too stylish and contrived feeling. I was not brought up by such refined eastern Europeans though, clearly. It was bland. It was very pretty but lacked something. I know cooking with love is a trite cliche but it's like the heart was missing and salt... ahem and acid. You can elevate things without losing what makes them sing to you but that's not the case here. Take my opinion with a grain of salt. I just prefer the cheaper yet more fulfilling versions of these items elsewhere. I want to feel as if someone's babcia, babushka or nagymama is cooking or at least inspiring someone to cook. Unfair? The food was pretty good but they left the bay leaves in the dill pickle soup which is actually just kinda dangerous. Also while I'm sure it was an honest mistake they gave us a bill for like over 600 dollars. Our meal was like under 200. They had live music tho which was incredible!! I've eaten here twice in the past 3 months while visiting the area. They serve Central European food (Poland, Austria, Hungary). The first visit was a solid 5 star experience. The interior is a bit dated (it's kinda feels like eating in an antique shop), but the food and service were fantastic. So good that I insisted we go back on our most recent visit. This past trip, we ordered the farmers cheese & potato pierogi, but they had no cheese in them. We told our waiter that our pierogis tasted like they didn't have farmers cheese and his response was "oh they have cheese in them". Ummm, ok. The rest of the food we ordered was very good but our server that night continued to be forgetful with our orders and seemed to have an attitude. Despite the inconsistent service and dated interior, this is a good spot for Polish food if you can't travel into Detroit for some. read more

If you require a reservation, you need to state that clearly on your website and put the information as to how to make that reservation as well. We came at 6 pm on a Friday- after having checked whether a reservation was needed on the website- and were told, after waiting a half hour for parking, that they were unable to seat us without a reservation. By that point it was too late for us to go anywhere else downtown without a 2-3 hour wait. Ruined our entire evening after we paid for a sitter for a date night out and everything, and the annoying thing is just a little bit of consideration and clarity of information would have fixed it. read more

The menu seems mostly Polish/Hungarian. We ordered a few appetizers and drinks, taking our time and not feeling rushed. We ordered potato pancakes and pierogies. The pancakes were pretty good, not great. The pierogies were excellent, but we were not given the ones we ordered (there were about 6 options), which was okay since they were still good. As I am unable to eat onions, I kept asking our server if dishes contained onions or if they could be made without. He kept going in the back and twice came back and said I am not sure. Really, come on. I settled for my 4th choice, the Kielbasa, which was very good, but not what I really wanted. I did have a very good beer. Polish platter was good but portion was on a smaller side. Goulash was ok - a bit blend. They have a pretty big dessert menu -do try! Lemon tart was great (and this is coming from someone who doesn't like lemon tarts :). ) hazelnut tart was delicious. However, Napoleon wasn't a classic recipe I expected , so wasn't my favorite. Went here for the first time for dinner last night and really loved my food! I'd been here for dessert in the past, but had never made it for a meal. I will be back! I tried the sampler platter entree of pierogis and loved them all except for the one with the American cheese. Surprisingly, the sweet cheese was my favorite of all, but the mushroom and pork varieties were especially notable. I even really liked the sauerkraut one, which I wouldn't have been inclined to order otherwise. The salad dressing on the lovely garden salad was the perfect ranch--not sweet. My friend who invited me to this restaurant loves the chicken paprikash, and that looked fantastic. I will try that next time. There were so many varieties of desserts in the dessert case that it was hard to choose. I chose a lemon torte, and I was especially thrilled with the flavor of that--so yummy!! Our waitress said that her favorite was the chocolate gateau, and I am adding that to the list to try sometime as well. To top it off, the service was great, too--our waitress had great recommendations and gave us the perfect amount of attentiveness without rushing us out the door. I loved the interior of this quirky, little place; exposed brick wall with different mirrors above the plate rails interspersed with musical instruments, The entrance is draped with a dramatic red curtain and two intimate tables flanking the entrance have lots of plants around them. I would have enjoyed my rolls warm enough to melt the butter I put on them, and that was my only criticism of my experience here. Rounding up from 4.5 stars. What a treat!! read more

This is going to sound crazy, but I'm writing this review 5 months after eating this meal because that's how great this restaurant is and I want to give credit where it's due. I've been to 124 restaurants in Ann Arbor, and this is in my top 5. If you're wanting to try something new with unique food and a more refined ambiance in Ann Arbor, look no further than Amadeus. This restaurant has great eats and felt like going into a time capsule with its decor and service. What a fun experience! We were first served hot bread and got some white wine to begin our meal. We ordered the salmon mousse, polish plate and and viennese pork cutlet. I'll start off by saying everything was fantastic. The salmon mousse 4/5: This appetizer was fresh in flavor due to the dill and cucumbers but still indulgent when paired with the potato pancake and sour cream. I loved this plate. The side salad felt a bit unnecessary but it was still all so delicious. The polish plate is the main star, 5/5: This is fantastic if you're like me and haven't had traditional eastern European food and want to try a little of everything. I chose the mushroom pierogi which was soft and so flavorful topped with little breadcrumbs for a contrasting crunch. The pork sauerkraut stew was my favorite on the plate as it was sweet, tangy, meaty and flavorful. The cabbage roll was also bomb as well (my dad's favorite on the plate). Topped with a tomato-y sauce, there was a lot of flavor for something that seemed simple. I liked the kielbasa as well, I just think the other things on the plate were so awesome it's hard to compare. The mustard, potatoes, sour cream, dill and side salad were all good additions to the plate as well. My dad got the pork cutlet, 4/5: Him and I both agreed this pork cutlet was tasty but not as stellar as my plate. Personally, I'm not really into pork cutlets so it just wasn't for me and I felt like it was a tad salty. We didn't get any dessert since we were so full, but it was all delicious. In addition to a great meal, our server was attentive and thoughtful in service. Amadeus is a unique establishment, perfect for a curious eater, celebratory dinner, or date night. 10/10 recommend! read more

The traditional polish staples are all very good especially the pierogi, kielbasa, and golabki. The caviar placek is also good. My, my....So many red flags.... Our group of five went here for Sunday brunch and arrived about 10 minutes after they opened. Upon walking in, the greeter asked us how many in our group. When we said 5, she looked around at the empty tables and at first suggested we sit at a round table for 4 and one of us could sit next to this table at another round table. I nixed that idea because we were a group not to be separated by tables when they had a couple of larger empty ones that weren't reserved. I asked if we could sit at the rectangular table. She hesitantly allowed us this better option. It felt odd and uncomfortable as if we were putting her out with our suggestion of a better table for our group. We looked around and there were maybe 5 other tables of diners waiting to be taken care of and realized she was the only one waiting on all of us... immediate red flags. She gave us one menu and said she'd return with the remaining 4 but the wait was taking way too long so we shared the same menu. Fortunately a few of us in the group looked at the online menu, which eased the share time of the one and only menu. By the time she came back with the rest of them, we all knew what we wanted. Again, red flag. Finally a second person came to work about 15 minutes after opening, followed by a third about 11:30 Yes, we thought the service might get a little better now that additional help arrived! No.... not so fast on the thinking..... It took our waitress 40 long minutes before she took our order. This was from time of arrival until we had our orders put in. We had plenty of time to see potential customers walk in and wait to be seated and gave up and left. Another table got tired of the long wait and walked out. Red flags galore. As we sat and waited and talked and waited, the persons in our group noticed a few things. There was a woman in an apron sitting on the floor behind the work area. Hmm.... not appetizing to look at. Red flag. I was seated looking towards the wall and there was a door leading to another room. The filthy edge of the door wasn't something I wanted to see, but had no choice considering it was in front of me. Something simple of basic cleanliness has been ignored for a long time. Red flag. Finally we had a couple of bread baskets to eat after the 40 minute wait for our busy waitress. I walked in hungry so by this time, I was starving and couldn't wait to eat some rolls! Our drinks came. Three at our table ordered the Viennese Coffee and all three thought it was weak and nothing to write home about. I ordered a Mimosa which I must say was a generous amount and very good. This was the best part of the visit. In all honesty it really was. Fortunately, not long after the rolls were delivered to our starving group, the food arrived about an hour after we arrived! But.... only one plate for one of our people came. The way it was delivered to our table wasn't what a diner would expect. It was placed in haste to the right of her in between her seat and the empty seat rather than in front of her in a more presentable manner. In fact the waitress dropped it off so quickly, we looked at each other and thought it was a strange way to deliver our food.... weird red flag. A couple minutes later, the other four plates came and they looked delicious. I ordered the Amadeus Breakfast and tasted the eggs first. Guess what? Lukewarm. Ugh! I then tasted the potato pancakes with the delicious looking salmon placed on top. Again.... warm, not hot. I dislike lukewarm food. So the disappointment replaced my long awaited anticipation. We all finished our food without ever being checked on or asked if we wanted water refills. The wait started for our bill and yet another red flag was raised. After another long wait, we had to ask for the bills. We promptly prepared them and waited yet again for them to be picked up from our table. We again had to ask for them to be processed. We all couldn't wait to get out of there. So after two long hours, we departed... unsatisfied, disappointed and knowing I have no reason to want to return. Lack of service, poor service, ho hum food, long wait times, 2 hours in there for a simple Sunday brunch was not the way we wanted to spend our extra hour of the first morning of daylight savings time. Unfortunately I can truthfully and fairly give only one star and I'm always very lenient and generous with all of my reviews. Hopefully this was just a fluke and we caught them shorthanded or on a bad day. But I feel it was one of the worst experiences and one I'd like to forget. It put a damper on our day. read more

An intimate, quiet little nook serving some continental classics over a backdrop of (at least on some nights) live classical music. Old school for sure, though that makes a refreshing contrast to Ann Arbor's trendier eateries. We haven't had a bad night here. Krakow chicken (served over Bigos pork stew) may be our favorite. Goulash, chicken paprikash, dill pickle soup, and Bitki (pork tenderloin w/ dumpling) have also been good. Triedt he Bitki for the first time a couple of nights ago and was really impressed. The meat was almost fall-apart tender, and the sage gravy made an excellent complement to it. Sage isn't a seasoning I associate with pork, but it went with perfectly, I thought. Amadeus's wine list is budget-friendly, with a lot of bottles in the $28-$30 range. We've picked winners each of the three or four times we've ordered from it. I did say it was intimate, which sometimes means it can be difficult to stay out of the way of servers passing by, or to avoid being pinned in by a neighboring dinner sitting a little too far back from his or her table. Tables are small, great for a cozy dinner for two, but Amadeus would be hard-pressed to put up a large party. For date night though...hard to beat. read more

On Washington next to the iconic Literatti sits Amadeus, a Central European restaurant with variations of Kielbasa to pierogis and everything in between. It's a small place, and our party had made reservations - we heard three groups turned away during our time there because they were fully booked for a Saturday evening. We partook in Hungarian pancakes, the polish plate, and kielbasa, as well as the dill pickle soup. While the plates had a nice variety of samplings, none were standouts. The pancakes however had a lovely chicken cream sauce, but the kielbasa was unremarkable. What was interesting and tasty was the soup, which stood far above the other offerings ordered. Service was unhurried (translation: slow) particular given the small size of the establishment. As the menu is extensive, A probably deserves another chance, but there are so many other places it would take awhile to get back. read more

Not terrible for being at U of M area, University and the hospital, we need to go to the hospital tomorrow, got a hotel. Ready for food! And the only thing they have is reserved seating for the weekend. No reservations, no food. Sad, for us. It looked cute inside, most of the restaurants are about the same size because they are the original buildings from way back when, renovated to accommodate the type of business they are now. The decor is quirky, decorated with knick-knacks and a centerpiece chandelier of multi-colored Christmas lights playfully decorated with flatware. On some nights, you are entertained by a live musician, which adds to the intimate cafe feel of the restaurant. The food lunch and dinner menus feature kielbasa, pancakes, and hearty goulash, pierogis, and other hearty favorites. Entrees are accompanied by bread and a house salad. I am partial to the dill pickle soup - a must for pickle lovers. I have many times found the food under-seasoned, but I would be surprised if ever leave hungry. First time here and definitely won't be the last! Hubby was craving Polish food and a quick Yelp search guided us here. We started with the pierogi appetizer. We ordered sauerkraut, potato and American cheese, and potato farmer cheese pierogi. Holy cow! These brought back memories of grandma making a huge Polish feast during the holidays. I ordered a funny sounding meal called Salmon-Ski (to make it Polish, maybe??). Very good! The salmon was a little dry but the seasoning was great. Hubby ordered the Polish Platter (I think that is what it was called) as he could not decide on what he wanted. Naturally I had a bite (or four) of his meal. My fav on his plate was the galumpki (I could eat stuffed cabbage every week). Hubby loved the kielbasa, which had an incredible sear on it! Amazing brunch! We went with the Polish breakfast (scallion eggs, garden salad, kielbasa, potato pancakes) which was fantastic and the fresh horseradish and ranch (??) dressing we're a nice add!! In addition the pierogi breakfast was lovely. We opted for kraut, shroom, and farmers cheese pierogis. All were very tasty! The mimosas and fresh breads didn't disappoint either! I've lived in A2 for a while and have always walked past this place. Finally went in randomly one night and was delighted. The decor is warm and eclectic but still kinda romantic. There was some live music that was a perfect touch...it all felt very private and personal as the restaurant was empty. I enjoyed the food - stroganoff and polish plate. It felt hearty and home cooked. Service was forgettable. I recommend if you're looking for something different from all the trendy buzzy restaurants that proliferate downtown.
