I bought a product that didn't work for me, and although it was unopened, they refused to return it because it was just 6 days over their 60-day policy. Took my daughter to Ulta yesterday on Mothers day to use her $25 gift card and we were told by the cashier that we were unable to use our gift card because she didn't know how to ring in the gift card payment. Not sure why we can't use a valid gift card because of an employees ignorance but it made me not want to go back. As a teacher, it's really hard to get to stores that close early. Ulta beauty being one of those stores since they close at 6 o'clock. Today I got off early and rushed as fast as I could making it with 10 minutes left before they closed. Sometimes when you come to a store with a short time left I find that the workers normally rush you or you can find them staring at you. I did not feel any of this today. I felt welcomed and not rushed in anyway shape or form. When I walked in the door they politely greeted me and let me know that I had 10 minutes left. When I came over I felt bad asking a question because I understood there was only a short amount of time in their day left, but they were eager and leapt at the opportunity to help me, Megan was extremely knowledgeable and worked quickly, but also did not rush me. I used to buy most of my cosmetics at Ulta, got my eyebrows done and I got my hair cut there, but getting an eyebrow appointment is impossible and I had a disastrous hair color experience and have since moved on. Now I only go when I need something I can't find elsewhere. Ulta has a nice selection haircare and cosmetics products. They have a variety of product lines so you can shop price or luxury. Let me start by saying I leave reviews for great experiences because people deserve recognition for providing great customer service. I am not rating this Ulta Beauty store at Short Pump for the salon, brow bar, or at the register but strictly for the experience I had while shopping the floor. This was an experience I had today with a prestige brand consultant and note this is a longer review. I am usually a Sephora shopper for all my makeup and skincare needs for the high quality and large selection of prestige brands but I had received a fantastic Ulta Beauty coupon in the mail that I wanted to use. I hadn't shopped at this store in awhile so I figured I would give it a try. As soon as I walked in, I knew I had some questions about skin care brands but no one welcomed me or even approached me. That's understandable though because I know how busy it can get. Once a consultant was finished with another client, I walked up to ask a question and complimented her very nice Halloween inspired makeup look. She seemed to brush me off right away but I asked my question anyway to which she replied, "you can go find that at Sephora down the street". I was maybe expecting at least another recommendation since I was here at her store. I next asked about another product and instead of walking me there to show me, she pointed at the back of the store and told me, "it's all the way back there." At this time, I'm just like "okay, thanks for the help!" and let her be on her way. Later, after I've collected my basket of goodies, I was checking out a MAC lipstick I was interested in. Again, the same consultant was standing behind me and greeting everyone that was walking into the store. She saw me looking for this shade in the other lipstick areas but I couldn't find it supplied. Knowing she is still behind me greeting new customers, I didn't want to bother her again especially after how our first interaction went. So I opened the extra supply drawer at the bottom to see if my shade was stored below. At this point, she does come over to ask if she can help and I told her I didn't want to be a bother and make her look through all these lipsticks. Her response was a blunt, "this is only for store workers to go through." I told her I understood this. She didn't continue to look for my shade but told me I could order online. I thanked her and began to walk away when I noticed she walked over to her coworkers and said something to them to which they looked over at me. I felt embarrassed and belittled. I put the $100 worth of products back in their spots on the shelves and left the store. I am leaving this store with a bad taste in my mouth purely off the disrespect from a single employee and that is sad. I know my business does not mean much to a large supplier like Ulta, but this is just terribly unprofessional. I hope this review can at least be used to change the tone at this location and be a learning experience. Working with the public is no easy task, I get that and I've been there. Sometimes all we can do is learn from these experiences. read more

I had a gift card so I went in to load up on some make up! It's all about the smoke and mirrors, baby! I found some great products, like the Urban Decay palette and bare minerals powder. They have a pretty good clearance section and a handy trial section at check out. They have a nice beauty department with hair care needs and a decent fragrance dept. I was looking for a brown mascara and they only had one that wasn't a pharmacy brand. A make up store this large should have some better selection. Ah well, maybe I'll check Sephora... If I could get rid of that manager I would. My girlfriend went in to get her hair done by one of the workers which obviously they did their job however she didn't finish the job. I'm not blaming the worker, the lady is a selfish petty lady. She sent my girlfriend out the store with her hair with bleach and not having any dye in her hair. I will be calling corporate and she will see some sort of consequences. This is unacceptable for her to send her out with her hair not finished when she has school the next day. I really, really don't like giving one star reviews. However the only reason I'm giving one star is because Yelp won't let you leave a review without one. Was in earlier to pick ups few things, mascara, shampoo, conditioner, blush. A well over $100 purchase. That being said- when they have your shampoo BOGO you snatch it up! TIGI Urban Antidotes anything from $7-$33 was on sale. Mind you the sign was on the floor and written in very tiny print but BOGO was in big bold letters. Got the shampoo and conditioner in the large bottles and went on about my shopping. Got to the check out and the TIGI didn't ring up BOGO. Hmmm. Per Ulta, liters weren't on sale. Hmmmm. The bottle was 25.36 oz. Now, not sure where you went to school, but that's not a liter. After a brief discussion I went and got the smaller sizes and made my purchase. Disappointed because you get so much more value from the larger bottles. But it's not a liter. Hubby went in and tried to prove this point politely to the manager who advised him very rudely and abruptly, "Sir, we consider those liters". So what is being said is... We know this is false. We don't sell liters of this. But we will use it as a loophole to make an extra $29, the value of one bottle. Well played Ulta. So here's the tea Ulta. I'm telling everyone I know about your shady practices. I am writing corporate. You can't claim something isn't on sale that you don't even sell. What I had fell within that threshold and did not equal a liter. You need to change one of two things. Either your practices or your signs. You're dishonest and shady. Your people are RUDE and condescending. It's because of folks like you that we, the consumer, turn to Amazon and that's a darn shame. read more

Reasons I went to Ulta today: 1. They carry The Ordinary skincare in-store. (everything else I was looking for is available at Sephora) 2. I had a giftcard. Reasons I won't be returning to Ulta any time soon if I can help it: 1. Tonight. I sincerely hope Ulta does not count themselves as serious Sephora competition, because if that's the case they're falling desperately short. Yes, this location was busy. But it was also ridiculously understaffed, and the staff I and other customers did approach were less than enthusiastic (read: rude, with one exception), to say the least. When I saw a product I really wanted that they were out of, no one could even be bothered to check another store to see if something they were out of was stocked elsewhere. Several areas were woefully unorganized and labeling was unclear. I know it's the holidays, but c'mon guys. This experience was dreadful. Overall, if you've ever spent time in Sephora, you likely wouldn't stand for this. I know I won't. I was reminded tonight of why I almost never patronize Ulta, despite working in a building that was directly next to one for several years in Los Angeles. I have very oily skin and running out of blotting papers on a business trip counts as a bona fide emergency for me. Thankfully, I spotted this Ulta on my way back to my hotel. The staff was not outwardly welcoming or helpful, but when I finally found an sales associate and told her what I was looking for, she was able to point me right to them. BONUS: I got the very last pack. I was checking out their eyebrow and makeup services as well, but since no one bothered to take a moment from restocking to ask me if I was interested or had any questions (there were two associates on either side of me, near the brow bar, restocking products), I just made my way to the line to check out. I got what I needed, but they might have made their store an extra hundred bucks or so just by being just a bit more engaging. This store has the widest variety of sale items I've seen at an Ulta store. The checkout line was quite long, so scoping out all of the cute pursed-sized odds and ends was a great way to kill time until it was my turn. read more

With my experience at other stores, I would normally come out with the wrong shade and I would look ashy or the product would break my skin out, but this time, I came to the right location! The staff was knowledgeable and quick, and made sure to check in on me consistently. Natalie (spellcheck) was super helpful and recommended the perfect product for my sensitive skin. She had the best energy and was extremely positive! Jess was abundantly helpful and if she didn't know something, she would reference me to someone who knew. I loved her calm and welcoming demeanor. The worst Ulta I've ever been to. I don't know what is wrong with the staff but every time I go in here I encounter rude staff. Let me tell you about this: I was in Ulta the other day looking at an essence by Cosrx. There was only a sample out so I asked a worker if they had any in the back. She said no and started asking me why I wanted this product. She then took me over to the Exuviance skin line and tried to sell me a $75 serum. $75....I'm a college student, I even told her that. She told me the essence I wanted would be "too drying" for my skin when 1. she had never even heard of it and 2. The product is literally for "super hydration." She was acting like I was completely stupid and didn't know what I was talking about. She was so condescending and acted like I knew nothing about my own skin. She continually insisted on me buying the Exuviance serum when I flat out told her I couldn't afford it. Sadly this is the closest Ulta to me so I'm sure I'll go back but I will do anything I can to avoid conversing with the staff. read more

I went to the salon today trying to get a medium-lightish brown on the bottom half of my hair and some light pieces in the front. My hair turned out SUPER dark and I look like a 50 year old woman with salt and pepper hair. I called Ulta and stylist had an attitude with me and gave me these excuses on why she screwed my hair up: 1) She told me I was late (I was 5 minutes late, that's great for Short Pump) 2) I was written down for something else entirely even though I explained my situation to the receptionist the day before. I even spoke to the stylish before we started and she said she had time to dye AND cut my hair. (We had 2 hours) Because of these things, the stylist believes I should have to pay full price again to get it fixed. I WILL NEVER RETURN. If you HAVE TO go, only to Rivkah. Oh yeah, but the hair trim was decent. It's the only reason there are 2 stars. read more

THE DONALD TRUMP OF ULTAS Yeah so, this is the worst-staffed Ulta I've ever been to. As a brown woman with thick, wavy (and dare I say, gorgeous!!) natural hair, I had a borderline racist experience with the woman at the checkout counter who, it should be noted, had stick straight hair. My experience as follows: Her: Did you find everything you need? Me: Yes, thanks. Her. Are you sure? Perhaps you would be interested in some frizz control products? Me: No thanks. Her: We have lots of products for hair suffering from frizz. Me: ----silence, shaking my head "No" ---- Her: There's a great line of serums for controlling humidity and all frizzy flyaways and such. Me: I just want to head out of here. Not interested in any more products today. ** And would you believe me if I told you that, even after the above exchange, she CONTINUED insisting I would benefit from products to make my hair look like hers. And for those of you reading this ignorant enough to think racism doesn't exist, let me clarify that the entire conversation involved her looking at me with condescending disgust. So let me end this review with this message to the snobby, look-like-a-white-person-or-else-feel-shame staff at the Short Pump, Glen Allen Virginia Ulta: Stop trying to make women feel BAD about themselves in order to sell them products that "solve" problems that---um, hello?!---never existed in the first place. I experienced the worst customer experience at the short pump Ulta. I wanted to use my Ulta credit card to take advantage of the 20% first time purchase but Emily (store manager) accused me of trying to scam a 20% off. I'm a diamond member I spend hundreds of dollars a month with ulta plus $70 worth of points on my account why would I SCAM.... She could've saved my time and hers by overriding the transactions but instead she referenced "recent fraudulent activity" that they've received. Common sense would tell you Emily that if your register is ringing up that I'm pre-approved and I'm telling you that I received my card in the mail then the system just hadn't updated with my card info. But ulta doesn't pay Emily for common sense. read more

I placed an online order in which I asked for a text when the order was complete - never got one. Picked up the order today, happen to look at it before I left and glad I did, she gave me the wrong order. This review is for the salon. Honestly, I was skeptical about visiting the Ulta salon. I made an appointment for a haircut on recommendation from a friend who had a fabulous blowout at Ulta SP. This is the best haircut I've had in 2 years! The stylist (wish I could remember his name...maybe Chris or Paul?) took his time and gave me a beautiful cut and styling. My hair hadn't looked this nice in months. I also got a mini size of the product he used in my hair with a purchase. I've made an appointment to return for a blowout! It's amazing that I can get my hair done and then ship around. Tip: if a friend refers you and you mention it when booking, you can get $15 off your service and your friend gets $15 off. I love deals and makeup, so naturally, I am a ULTA fan. This storefront is quite spacious so they cover a lot of the luxury brands and many of the drug-store brands. It seems there's always some type of deal going on so definitely keep your eyes peeled on any stickers for $avings$.
