Tonkotsu Ramen, Shrimp App. dumplings @phidingthefam

So who would've thought that the middle of Baja California in Mexico, a delicious ramen spot would have existed. Umai brings a great diversity of asian cuisine to mexicali. Umai aims to be a Japanese and Mexican fusion, and successfully able to do so. The restaurant gets pretty busy, so plan accordingly but it's definitely worth it. We able the Tonkotsu Ramen, Dumplings, Shrimp Brochetas, Chicken Pad Thai, and Shrimp Fried Rice. Like I mentioned earlier, their aim is for Japanese food mixed w/ mexican influences. Therefore, the ramen was probably the highlight of our table. The dumplings and brochetas was good as well, but the fried rice & pad thai were just put together. They weren't bad, but it wasn't anything special. Definitely swing by and get some ramen; in addition, the sushi rolls looked good as well so maybe get some of those! @phidingthefam

I stopped by Umai for lunch during my first trip to Mexicali. It's one of those Asian "fusion" restaurant. In this case fusion means they have a variety of Asian dishes ranging from pho to ramen to bao to pad thai to sushi. It's clean, open and has a good bit of tables. We beat the lunch rush and we're seated immediately. I ordered a jasmine tea which comes iced and with a little sugar added. It was very good. We actually asked for more and they gave us a small pitcher for the table. For food, I ordered the Umai fries as a appetizer. They were great! The fries come with a spicy mayo, hoisin, furikake, onion and I think seaweed. The fries were crisp and the flavors were really well balanced. My main course was the pad thai which comes with a bunch of add ins including chicken, egg, onion peanuts and more. The pad thai was delicious. The noodles had a nice chew and I ran out of noodles before I emptied the bowl. They give you soy sauce that I think was fermented a little to give it a little acidity. Overall it was a nice lunch and at the price point a great spot. For sure recommend if you make it to mexicali. Next time I've got to try some of their bao.

    Spicy Miso Ramen! My favorite!

El mejor ramen de la ciudad! Tienen poca variedad de platillos pero todos muy buenos, además de que la atención siempre es genial!

We had heard about Golden Dragon but it is a bit of a drive for us. But what the heck. Let's go for a ride give it a try. In 2 separate visits we tried a variety of items. Started with egg rolls, egg drop soup and their simple fried noodles. Egg rolls were crispy and hot seasoned great. The soup served was a nice generous portion. Broth was good. Could have used a bit more seasoning and maybe a sprinkling of green onions. But very good nonetheless. Entrees started with sweet and sour orange chicken. This chicken was breaded perfectly. Nice and lightly crunchy without being hard. The sauce was nice and orangey. Next time will try the spicy version. Chicken chop suey looked very basic but the plate was piled high. Lots of bean sprouts, cauliflower, carrots, that were very fresh and tasty. A little more chicken would have been nice. On a subsequent visit we had the pan fried chicken with the vegetable chop suey. Can't stress enough just how fresh everything was. Huge portions and great taste. Iced teas and adult beverages rounded out our meals. Fat, dumb and happy! Pricing was reasonable. Could have been more generous with the proteins but the portions were huge. Service was good. A bit of a language challenge but we managed to charade our way thru. Spanish language speakers will have no problem. And the place was very neat and clean with well maintained restrooms. Will definitely be back!

The food is pretty tasty. Portions are pretty good too just not so much with protein. Place is…read moreclean and decent. The chairs are a bit old and outdated and not so comfortable. Yet, this is our second visit and we would definitely come back again. Thank you, service is good too.

Food: I had the Michigan roll with edamame. Very unique and it is cool that they have 50…read moredifferent rolls for 50 states. If I lived close, I would need to try all of them... except California because I've had a bunch of those. The only negative I would say is that me and my colleagues plates came out and they were presented really well, unique looking and on fancy plates. But he got an order of gyoza and it was served on a plastic basket. So everything else was all fancy, but the gyoza came out and it wasn't as nice of a presentation. Atmosphere: Its spacious inside, not too crowded and lots of Japanese decorations everywhere. I would have liked if they had cleaned the menus though because they were a little greasy feeling. Price: Not a bad price, middle of the road I would say. Edamame less than 4$ so that was cool. The coke they served was a long, 16.9oz glass bottle, I didn't even know they made those anymore! Service: Our server was nice, no complaints. Although it took a little while to get her attention, but after that it was all good. Overall: Like I said, I would totally come back here to try more rolls. Very cool little place in El Centro. If I come back through to go to Mexicali, I will stop here again.

Absolutely…read more I want to begin by saying that the staff was friendly, the food was excellent, and the overall atmosphere of the restaurant was enjoyable. Unfortunately, my experience with the owner was deeply disappointing. I was unaware that the restaurant opened at 11:00 AM. After seeing other customers enter, I assumed it was acceptable to go inside. The owner responded by yelling at me from across the parking lot, which I found unnecessary and disrespectful. When I later placed my order, she did not greet me and instead gave me an unfriendly look. She then made comments about me in Korean to one of the employees in a mocking manner. Having studied Taekwondo for 15 years, I was able to understand what she said. As someone from Los Angeles who appreciates and respects different cultures, I was shocked and hurt by this experience. I drove three hours to visit this restaurant and left feeling singled out and racially profiled. No customer should feel judged or insulted because of their appearance or ethnicity. Businesses should treat every guest with respect and professionalism. Because of this experience, I will not be returning, and I hope the ownership reflects on how customers are treated.
