Ok, I order falafel regularly, because I love the falafel (I do). While most don't match the falafel wrap of The Lebanese House at the Harcourt Street Food Market (only 5 EUR, wow!), but rarely are they a big a let down as there were here at Kilkenny Cafe Shanagarry. Why do places serve up what's currently popular/trendy if they can't do it right. I almost forgot that it came with some mediocre chips and soup that was far far too sweet. Ok rant over. They sell nice stuff here too, if you can afford it. Since we'd spent enough on lunch, we skipped buying anything. Staff and facilities were grand though, just the food a disappointment.

Not to worry and we headed for the Kilkenny Cafe in the village, in the former Stephen Pearce emporium. Walked through the shop. The cafe, indoor and outdoor, is at the far end. We were warmly greeted and took a seat outdoors overlooking the local fields and looking out towards Ballycotton. With a dinner arranged (fresh hake from the English market) for the evening, we didn't need anything major. Started with a delicious Potato and Leek soup (€4.50) and a couple of slices of gorgeous freshly made brown bread. Skipped a variety of well priced main courses - tempting salads, burgers, Paninis - and ended with a pot of tea and scones (with all the trimmings, including jam and cream). Total came to just over seventeen euro. Took a stroll through the shop and bought a few food items. Service, at both restaurant and shop, was first class, very friendly and efficient. So, if you are in East Cork, an under-rated area where there is so much to see and do, I'd recommend you mark this cafe as a stop on your tour.

Cork is a place you DEFINITELY need reservations for dinner - it's very busy, and popular restaurants like Orso do fill up very quickly. It was bustling even at 6:30PM, and was great to see a busy and thriving restaurant. The food and service was phenomenal, so good that we chose to dine at their sister restaurants across the rest of our visit to Cork. Highly recommended.

Though she was literally the only server for the entire restaurant this evening, she never made us feel rushed and was always patient with every group that came. This is a relatively small space with only about 6 tables inside. There was a large group sitting outside, they probably put together 2 or 3 tables. It's a relaxed place with some beautifully framed artwork on the wall. The menu provides a wonderful selection of Middle Eastern food. We didn't choose any drinks other than the water that was offered. My wife and I shared the Grilled Halloumi salad to start. The salad was delicious and the halloumi was superb. For the entree we both chose the fish of the day, a grilled sea bream with some sort of slaw. The fish was fantastic, prepared perfectly. It had wonderful flavors in addition to the excellent taste and texture of the fish. We ordered a side of sweet pea hummus with pita, which was absolutely delicious. We succumbed to ordering dessert because they too sounded so good. What made them totally special was that birth the Pear Tartin and Mahalabia were flavorful, not too sweet, and we didn't feel stuffed after enjoying them to complete our meal. The fresh mint tea that accompanied dessert was delicious.
