I still love Satoe and the idea of this place. I loved it so much the first time, I made a point to return 3 years later. Sadly, the sushi did not meet my expectations this time. Traditionally, sushi chef put soy sauce and wasabi in the between the fish and rice, and it's part of the flavor. I don't remember how it was done last time, but that was not the case this time. I had to awkwardly flip the nigiri pieces and dip the fish side in soy sauce, and then they fall apart. Ugh. Also, I didn't appreciate the size of the rice. It was impossible for me to eat the whole piece in one bite, but it's kind of rude not to under the traditional Japanese etiquette. The fish quality was.....okay. TBH, I had better in Sacramento/Roseville for way cheaper. I had more elegant, delicious, and satisfying omakase in San Diego, New York, Shanghai....you name it. For the price (even adjusted for the Maui premium) and the capability of the owners, I truly believe they could do better. Sending love! read more

We each ordered the Omakase Sushi "A", and because the meal was so good we ordered 2 more rolls to share -- the 6 piece California roll (with real crab), and the eel and cucumber roll served with warm, just cooked eel and a sweet eel sauce. Make a reservation by SMS text, with the number on their website. It's a small place, though a walk-in two-top was able to get a seat the Thursday night we were there around 7 or 8ish. We were also able to make day-of reservations a few hours before they opened for dinner service. It's a small restaurant with a few tables and seats at the bar. Very cute and playful Japan meets Hawaii decor with a bit of peanuts characters thrown in. I loved the driftwood Christmas tree! Service was wonderful despite the restaurant being full at 7pm. We started with some Hakkaisan sake and beer. The sake was dry and smooth, just the way I like to start a wonderful sushi meal. Of course I had to order the omakase, which I opted for the "Sushi B" set, which is the basic omakase but with a few additions including tamago, ikura, and since I cannot eat squid I believe they subbed tai. The two owners that run this small place do everything - makes sushi, serves food, cleans up dishes... Definition of a small business. For four people we ordered 2x chirashi, 2x aloha sushi (B) plates (12 different fish/items), ankimo sashimi, 1054Togashi roll, and a fisherman's miso soup. Meal came out to just over $400 for 4 people after tax and tip. -0.5 stars for finding ants on one of the plates we got - but the quality of fish, speed of service, general ambiance - you don't come here for "cheap" eats - you come here for the authentic food and fresh fish. For just the two of them this place is a quaint, homely place to get a meal - I am certainly glad I dropped in, but it's expensive to be a regular here, for sure. Hands down one of the best sushi experiences in Maui. The owners are incredible people who make you feel like family before, during, and even after your visit. We made reservations (recommended, esp if it's a busy weekend) and were welcomed with smiles and a wonderful greeting at the door. all of the decor is very Maui and warm - which was just a bonus of the great food and experience we had. I was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. And I KNOW what the quality of "authentic" sushi restaurants in Tokyo has to be, including the ones in Ginza. I don't hesitate to say 1054 Togoshi is absolutely the best sushi restaurant on Maui. Food Quality is very high, authentic, and absolutely far more delicious than other Sushi restaurants on Maui. Chef Manabu is very quiet (that alone indicates he is a very professional Sushi chef from Japan) and his Sushi is amazing, and his wife Satoe, who manages floor operations, is super attentive, polite, and offers services with genuine "Japanese Omotenashi" spirit. The restaurant is very clean and stylish with a Modern Maui ambience and cute decorations that Satoe creates. I must admit prices are on the higher side, but the restaurant is definitely worth checking. I have been living on Maui for over 16 years now, and this is a very special place that I must regularly come back to feel at home. read more

We started with the white snow shake and the wasabi ika (diced squid in a mild wasabi sauce). We look forward to this dish as we cannot find the same quality in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our wives both ordered the chirashi (delicious and fresh sashimi over sushi rice) and two sashimi platters B. Oh my gosh, the sashimi they serve is so fresh and delicious. They also use fresh wasabi instead of the reconstituted powder wasabi. It is not as hot and is so much more delicious. It may be a little more pricey than some of the options nearby, but you can tell they take pride in what they do and the service they provide. A close friend of mine who has lived on Maui since 2020 told me this was a must stop when visiting Maui. Holy cow, I wish we didn't wait until our last day. I want to eat here again and again. It wasn't overly salty where you feel the soup need to be accompanied with beer or water to wash down. It was light and full of flavor Yellowtail carpaccio: WOW. Tangy but extremely balanced sauce toped with a very thin slice of jalapeño. If you want the extra kick fold up that bad boy with the fish and take out tastebuds to heaven, or omit and it will still make your mouth happy! 10 piece sashimi: call me a rookie, but I had the raw octopus for the first time tonight and it was delicious! All of the fish was perfectly sized, fresh and my gluttonous self wanted more. Spicy yellowtail roll: balanced with just the right amount of fish to rice ratio and fantastic flavor. Washed it all down with an Orion beer. I'm not a huge beer drinker but let me say, it was tasty. The also have wine and Japanese vodka and whiskey. It's a husband and wife owned sushi restaurant.
