I would say it was a very good experience. Alvaro listened carefully to my questions and concerns, examined my account and the transactions in question, and effectively clarified everything for me. The only Visa card offered by Exchange Banks is owned by a company called Elan. And Exchange Bank should look into the reviews of that company that are posted on the Internet and then hopefully, change who they do business with. I'm posting this as a warning to anyone that might want to open a Visa account through exchange bank. We have used Exchange Bank for years and have had good experiences with no complaints. We've always just used their ATM debit card because we have a Visa through Costco. Because of other circumstances, we recently inquired about opening a Visa card through Exchange bank. Thankfully, we made some inquiries on line about the Visa company that they use, which is Elan. And we're shocked that universally all the websites that report people's experiences such as Yelp gave Elan Visa cards, one star and many users stated they wished there was a no star rating available, because they've had so many problems whenever they reported fraud on the card . Elan Visa card holders state that Elan does not help and often accuses the client of conducting the fraud. My advice is stay away from Exchange bank's Visa cards.

THREE BANKERS AND A BOUNCER I walked into my local Chase…read morebranch to deposit a check into one of my Chase accounts. The teller said she needed to check with her manager. The manager refused the deposit because the check, from a local business that has always known me by my nickname, a name I've had since birth, was made out to that name. I wasn't trying to cash the check or withdraw money. I just wanted to deposit it. I've banked with Chase for years, and I was stunned they wouldn't accept it. When I pushed back, the manager called in her bouncer, a young man in his 30s, physically fit, in plain clothes with no uniform or ID. He approached me, a 79 year old man, in a threatening manner, told me to leave or he'd call the police, and started moving me toward the door. A young, strong man closing in on a senior and physically threatening him is a threat, plain and simple. As he paused, a wealth manager I'd worked with before recognized me and stepped out of his office. I asked him, "You treat a good customer like this, and you want to manage my money?" He had no answer. I tried to photograph the manager, but she held up a file folder to hide her face, safe behind the bulletproof teller glass. The bouncer backed off as I left. I don't know if anyone called the police. I have never in my life been asked to leave a business, let alone one I trust with my money. Would the manager refuse access to funds I entrusted with the bank? Who knows? Epilogue: still shaken, I got home, tried to relax, and decided to try the Chase mobile app instead. Deposit submitted in under a minute. Later that afternoon, an email arrived: "We accepted your check deposit." Thanks, Chase! So the Chase app did in sixty seconds, civilly, without threat or disrespect, what four Chase employees (a teller, a manager, a wealth manager, and a plain-clothes bouncer) could not do. Worth noting, Chase has been cutting jobs all year, including roughly 250 in Texas and 475 in New Jersey, and CEO Jamie Dimon says AI has already trimmed headcount 30 to 40 percent in some areas. Here's a thought for Mr. Dimon: your app did what three bankers and a bouncer couldn't: help a loyal customer deposit money. Pull the security footage if it still exists and tell me if this is how Chase cares for its customers. Maybe this is how the bank got its name: by Chase'ing out its customers.

Walking up to the deceivingly plain in fascia of the 4th Street branch you find the door, grab the handle and... BANG!*%^#&CLANG... what ? Why is the bank closed? Make sure you take your hat off, leave your unibomber shades in the car and you might reconsider that full length trench coat you're wearing on a hot sunny day....freak. Posted outside the door is a sign relaying this message and you must abide by it to get in. The dude abides. Once you are in though, things just keep getting better. You see, for some reason there is never a line there. The branch manager is always available and at her desk if you need to speak with her. In fact if all of the tellers are busy, she has no problem processing your financial transactions herself. At Bank of Marin, customer service really is their specialty. And it's not like the other banks. There is no script the tellers follow. There is no closing statement with the mandated corporate speech and smile. The tellers get to know you and you get to know them too. There exists a very human element to this branch. Sometimes yourself or the teller is having a lousy day. It happens, and its OK. The last thing I want if I'm having a down day is to listen to some teller run though the cheery greeting, bogus small talk and chipper closing you'll get at what I call the "McDonalds of Banks" I'm not one to toot my own horn very much, unless I'm in LA traffic... but I'm actually sort of well qualified to judge a bank from a number of aspects. Since 2005 my job has sent me around to almost all of the banks of a regular basis. I frequently make deposits at the following banks in Petaluma: Wells Fargo Bank of the West 1st Community Bank Chase Bank of America WestAmerica Exchange Bank US Bank Redwood Credit Union That doesn't cover all of the banks in Petaluma, but it is a nice survey of of the large institutions, regional banks, local banks a credit union thrown in for fun. There are some really good banks on the list and some that I don't care for too much, but this review is about Bank of Marin and all I can say is that they are one of the best for sure. Aside from the great customer service, you'll also find an honest bank. Open, up-front fee schedule. They're not trying to sell you loans or credit cards constantly. They'll call you if your account dips negative BEFORE they hit you with a NSF charge to see if you can get it back into the black.

The moment you need anything out of the ordinary, you're handed off to the Retention Prevention Team: the Bulldog and the Bubble Boy. The Bulldog is a senior teller who steps in when a bewildered teller can't answer a question. Maybe she was recently laid off as a guard at San Quentin or a DMV supervisor. Her role is to find a reason to say "No" and get you out of the branch as fast as possible. At this, she excels. If you question the Bulldog or won't accept "No," enter the Bubble Boy. He sits in a glassed-in office in his suit and tie, like a small-town insurance salesman, never leaving his isolation room. In my case, the Bulldog vanished to confer discreetly (but in full view) with Sean the Bubble Boy and never came out -- safely insulated from any pesky customer. The verdict, handed down by the Bubble Boy and delivered by the Bulldog: I needed to open yet another account (on top of four banking accounts, three cards, and a car lease), after which my documents would be kicked upstairs for senior executives -- i.e., real bankers and lawyers -- to review. No one ever looked at the documents; the whole exercise was to verify my identity for a transaction of nominal value. The DMV and TSA do this millions of times daily for strangers where public safety is paramount, but the Petaluma branch can't do it for one of its own branch customers. Chase is the largest bank in the U.S. -- nearly $5 trillion in assets across 5,000-plus branches. Petaluma, with maybe $200 million in deposits, is a speck of sand in the Chase universe, with all the authority that confers: none. At best, it's a sandbox for suits-in-training, like the Bubble Boy. If you want a BIG faceless bank that treats you like a small-town, small-time, run-of-the-mill customer, Chase's Petaluma branch is for you. I have a number of banking relationships with a number of banks, but Exchange Bank is my favorite, and as these other banks price themselves out of my market I'll stick with EB. My favorite EB perk: they refund foreign ATM fees. Since they are a local bank, I prefer them to WFB or others for overseas transactions, A good bank.
