Every now and then, a roadside deli catches your attention and earns a stop. While passing through…read moreSonoma, I decided to pull in for a quick lunch, and I was greeted by a team that was warm, attentive, and genuinely happy to help, always a great way to begin a meal. The daily special was a Caprese sandwich, and that's what found its way to my table. At first glance, the presentation was rather understated and didn't quite create that immediate "I can't wait to dig in" moment. Fortunately, the flavor told a better story. Fresh mozzarella, vine-ripened tomatoes, fragrant basil, balsamic glaze, and quality olive oil came together on fresh bread to create a classic Italian combination. At the staff's recommendation, I ordered it toasted. The melted mozzarella was rich and satisfying, but if I were ordering it again, I'd choose it cold. A Caprese is at its best when not hot and the tomatoes, basil, and mozzarella remain bright, fresh, and distinct, allowing each ingredient to shine on its own. While the sandwich was enjoyable, it wasn't one that I'll be thinking about days later. What truly caught my eye were the steady stream of beautifully crafted tri-tip sandwiches making their way to neighboring tables. Judging by the smiles around the dining room, those appear to be the deli's signature offering, and they'll definitely be my choice on the next visit. The restaurant itself is comfortable and inviting, offering plenty of seating out front, along the side patio, and in a cozy tucked-away nook in the back. It's an easy stop on your way into Sonoma, perfect for a relaxed lunch without the crowds and a lot of options to eat & drink. Not every meal has to be unforgettable to be worthwhile. Sometimes you simply want good ingredients, friendly service, and an easy place to recharge before continuing your journey. This deli delivers exactly that. And who knows, the next time I stop in, that tri-tip sandwich just might be the star of the show.

Extremely rude. Have been there twice and both times I got odd looks like I did something wrong…read more Both sandwiches I have ordered have been microwaved. Their "specials" aren't good because It's a microwaved premade sandwich. They won't even bother to acknowledge you, but will take your money for a horrible sandwich. Listen to the 1 star reviews...

In 1959, family matriarch Mary Fazio opened up a "shack" serving up Italian homemade comfort food. That shack was in nearby Boyes Hot Springs. The shack is long gone and the family still runs their local restaurants. I'm no stranger to Mary's Pizza. Been dining at their various locations for over 20 years. My go to faves are the pizza and Mary's house salad. But I've never had anything I didn't like from them. The pizza when baked right has a crust with a nice chew and perfect combination of crisp exterior and soft interior. They use quality ingredients. I like that they use the traditional pepperoni with natural casing, it curls up into little cups when baked. Taste all so good. Mmm. Terrific, classic cheese stretch. Pizza sauce is housemade, as is the Sonoma salad dressing. I order that dressing with the signature salad which is another fave of mine. The late weekday afternoon I dropped in, our waiter was enthusiastic and engaging. But possibly due to staffing levels, he forgot to provide plates for the pizza he dropped off and the other items we requested (napkins, refills, the check). We asked the waiter that was assigned to the neighboring tables. Our waiter was covering other tables on the opposite side of the restaurant along with our table.

By the time we arrived, most of the local businesses had already closed for the evening, but thankfully Mary's Pizza Shack was still open and welcoming. The moment we walked in, the place had that classic, cozy, small‑town feel -- the kind of spot where families gather after a game, locals know each other by name, and visitors like us instantly feel comfortable. It's charming without trying too hard, and it has that nostalgic, homey vibe that makes you want to sit down, relax, and stay awhile. Customer service was genuinely friendly, which we appreciated after a long day of exploring. Even though it was later in the evening, the staff didn't rush us or make us feel like we were an inconvenience. Instead, they were warm, attentive, and happy to have us there. If you're in Sonoma and looking for a laid‑back place to grab a bite -- whether you're with family, a partner, or just want a chill night out -- Mary's Pizza Shack is a solid choice. It ended up being the perfect unexpected stop on our little adventure.
