In the heart of the Sonoma Plaza shopping district is Mary's Pizza Shack restaurant. The restaurant chain has a strong local roots. In 1959, family matriarch Mary Fazio opened up a "shack" serving up Italian homemade comfort food. That shack was in nearby Boyes Hot Springs. The shack is long gone and the family still runs their local restaurants. I'm no stranger to Mary's Pizza. Been dining at their various locations for over 20 years. My go to faves are the pizza and Mary's house salad. But I've never had anything I didn't like from them. The pizza when baked right has a crust with a nice chew and perfect combination of crisp exterior and soft interior. They use quality ingredients. I like that they use the traditional pepperoni with natural casing, it curls up into little cups when baked. Taste all so good. Mmm. Terrific, classic cheese stretch. Pizza sauce is housemade, as is the Sonoma salad dressing. I order that dressing with the signature salad which is another fave of mine. The late weekday afternoon I dropped in, our waiter was enthusiastic and engaging. But possibly due to staffing levels, he forgot to provide plates for the pizza he dropped off and the other items we requested (napkins, refills, the check). I'm guessing a lot of the bad reviews are due to service. I saw nobody was attending to those customers seating outside so I deliberately went to the bar where I got good service. The food was pretty good. I got the chicken parm. The chicken was a little dry but otherwise good. The pasta was good. The garlic cheese bread was half off due to happy hour and was excellent. This place is great for families (lots of kids when we went inside) and is more of a value meal spot. We were advised to get the chicken parm which came with a crispy piece of chicken, a small Caesar salad and a side of fettuccine Alfredo. Kind of a strange combination for Italian food, but filling and definitely shareable. Good vibes and inexpensive, smells like California pizza when you walk in - definitely giving Italian American pizza nostalgia. We also got the soup salad combo with the bean sausage soup, which was mediocre (it came out piping hot and quickly cooled down so it was probably microwaved.) After 8pm they have a happy hour from 8-close, with $2 off wine and cocktails. If you're looking for cheap drinks and eats, this is a good spot. We got the breadsticks half off (likely made with pizza dough) and $4 seemed about right for the price. We didn't end up ordering pizza. For two people we cleaned out at $60 + tip, overall not a bad deal. Prosecco was only $9 a glass and Gloria Ferrer brut was $12. read more

We have been going to this MARYS location for a few years now. It is always a wonderful experience located downtown Sonoma across from the park. We went on Friday, May 1 and we ordered the lunch festival, which was clam chowder and salad and an appetizer of calamari which comes with hot sourdough French bread and butter. The meal was amazing like always.! The owner Vince and Chef Francis really puts his heart and soul into all the food. Our waitress was Michele and she is awesome she is very helpful and an excellent server. Always taking care of anything we may need. We had such a good time that we ordered up a quart of clam chowder to take home as well as a margarita pizza which is a fantastic pizza! I was really impressed that I got a call back from the restaurant who found my umbrella that I'd left when there for a group lunch earlier in the day. I called to inquire after I got back home, and was told 'no' at first. After hanging up I thought I should have left my number. Then about an hour later I got a call that it had been found (that there was another group in the area we had the lunch and they couldnt' check again when I called). I'm generally very pleased with Mary's in general, especially the one right next to Sonoma Plaza. It has great "outdoor" seating with a great fireplace. My favorite pizza they make is mushroom. I love mushrooms, and they lay them so thick on the pizza, it's hard to tell there's a pizza under there! I stopped there for a small mushroom pizza to go yesterday. There probably weren't a dozen mushrooms on that pizza, which I was unaware of until I got home and opened the box. That was a disappointment. However, I sat at the bar while I waited for my to go order, and enjoyed the company of bartender Dominic who can make a heck of a Cadillac Margarita! We were on a wine tour and our bus driver dropped us off in Sonoma Plaza to grab a bite to eat. We were in the mood for pizza and wandered into Mary's. It was a warm day and although our preference would have been to sit on the patio, we opted for a booth inside. The inside decor made us feel like we were stepping back in time! We were warmly greeted by our server and she quickly brought us ice waters and sodas. After reviewing the menu, we decided to start with the Italian Wedge Salad. It was large enough to split, cold and crisp with a tangy Italian dressing. The tomatoes were especially sweet and delicious! We also ordered a classic crust pepperoni and Italian sausage pizza. It was pizza perfection! Loaded with toppings and the crust was crisp yet chewy. Dropped by Mary's late after a full-day volleyball tournament nearby, and we were definitely hungry. The staff were welcoming, along with being prompt and friendly in their service, including being quickly helpful after we spilled one of our water cups and checking in throughout the dinner. My husband and I were passing through Sonoma one evening back in June and worked up an appetite. We hadn't planned to stop and didn't want to spend on a fancy dinner that day, so Mary's Pizza Shack caught our eye in terms of price point. We hadn't had Italian food in a while and I was craving pasta, so we decided to try it. Upon walking in, we loved the high ceilings and the homestyle feel of the establishment. It was busy, but we were able to get a table relatively quickly. I took a brief look at the regular menu, but was drawn to the seasonal delights. I decided to go with the lemon shrimp linguini, and my husband went with the Mary's classic lasagna. Both of us opted for soup instead of salad, and chose the minestrone. It was a bit of a wait to get our food, but we didn't mind as we weren't in a rush. The minestrone was well-seasoned and flavorful, and had savory pieces of meat. The veggies were not overcooked. It was your classic minestrone and the perfect start to our meal. My linguini was the first to arrive, and shortly after came the lasagna. The linguini had six juicy shrimp and the pasta was cooked perfectly al dente. I was actually pleasantly surprised by the kick of spice from the chili flakes, and decided not to add extra. The flavor of the dish was well-balanced, but presentation-wise, it was missing the grilled lemon as stated in the menu. However, I personally didn't feel like the dish needed the lemon, but if I returned to Mary's, I'd like to see how the lemon would change the flavor profile. I didn't get a chance to try my husband's lasagna, but he gave it solid remarks and whatever little I got to savor of the remaining meat sauce, I enjoyed. Halfway through our dinner we realized that our server still hadn't given us the sourdough bread that was supposed to come with my husband's meal, as clearly stated in the menu. We asked for it and it arrived just in time for us to soak up the leftover sauces from our dishes. It was also perfectly warm and crunchy while being soft on the inside. Overall, Mary's Pizza Shack is a good option if you don't want to spend top dollar on the other restaurants in downtown Sonoma, and next time I'd like to try their pizza slices if I want a quick bite. Keep in mind, however, that I have had plenty of top-notch pasta from Half Moon Bay to Monterey, and while Mary's hits the spot, don't expect the same level of quality or depth of flavor in Mary's pasta dishes as those from dedicated pasta restaurants who make their pasta in-house. Again I would love to try their pizza the next time we visit Sonoma. read more

Clearly we didn't stop in for atmosphere, with its wide open dining area and very high ceiling, the sound really bounces around, but when it comes to food this is where you want to be. The open faced meatball sandwich is truly a meal! Those enormous house made meatballs are just the right size for the fresh sourdough bread, add the fresh melted mozzarella and red sauce and your in heaven!. Apparently sandwiches are in their wheelhouse, they also serve one of the best grilled cheese sandwiches I have ever had. Layered cheeses with a bit of sauce squeezed in between the grilled sourdough bread was the best I have ever had. Add a side salad and your set. Ordered a small pesto pizza, what was given was a medium pepperoni with red sauce called "Pestoroni". Manager corrected the order and I waited for my pesto pizza while spaghetti got cold. (I did not understand why pesto sauce cost more than red sauce.) I might have expected a manager to say, "Hey, pizza on us" as an offer of good faith to keep a customer, but no such offer made. My waitress was very sweet and brought us ranch for our pizza. Thursday night isn't too busy and we went 1 hour before closing. My dad grew up loving it, and gets super excited whenever we have the chance to visit one, so naturally I get excited to. This visit my dad and I shared a grilled chicken sandwich and an ancient grain bowl, both of which were simply lovely. My favorite part of the grain bowls was the texture, I'm a huge farro fan, and love how it combines with other ingredients in a bowl or salad. And the sauce on the sandwich, along with the in-season local tomatoes and the focaccia, created a flavor profile to drool over. We had a bigger group, and they handled it well, bringing the food quickly. Good, classic pizza place. I like coming to Mary's because it's family friendly and the quality has always been really good for the pizza. I also really enjoy their house red wine. I will say, the other dishes are a toss up. Their ravioli was good but their salads and children's hotdog were disappointing. Also, when we have gone the service is lacking. We arrived right before opening and were greeted by a waitress who wasn't particularly friendly, which set the tone for the visit. However, we were seated quickly and our orders were taken promptly. People will pay for quality. We appreciate it. We know the difference. It's possible to offer low price options, and keep the real deal the real deal as a different dish. You lost me as a customer. We have been to Marys a few times, great pizza and great service. I remember back in the day going to Mary's over in Walnut Creek by Shadelands, we went there so many times they knew our names.
