So I decided to try this place since my favorite bbq spot has been less than on point lately. I ordered the wing and tip combo. The tips were tender...the wings still had feathers on them...a big no no for me. The flavor was ok...but I don't think I'll be back. Absolutely Awful! We tried the food from this place twice. We have tried our best to give them the benefit of the doubt, but they don't care. The first time we paid for our carry out order in advance and still had to wait almost 45 minutes to get our meal. Then just tonight (3/10/2017) we ordered two menu items and only received one. I shouldn't have to guess what is in the order bag that you are handing me. To make matters worse, when we got home and opened the bag, it looked like someone had just dumped pig slop in a container and handed to us. Read about this place in Saveur magazine and had to try it when we visited from Texas. It was my first experience with Chicago-style barbecue and it was delicious. My wife and I had the rib tips, links and brisket. It was all perfectly done. As a first-timer, I had a lot of questions when I stepped up to order; the counter staff workers were patient, friendly and courteous. So.... I check their website, and order a catfish meal and rib tips. The man that took my order neglected to mention that they DO NOT serve catfish.... Instead, he placed my order as though everything was ok. Get there and of course they state they do not serve what the person on the phone took the order for. This was very good BBQ, cooked right and the sauce is rich and hearty. Tender and smoky, fall off the bone meat.

So far I have visited this place about three times. The rib tips are really pretty good, the chicken wings are very tasty. In fact, they seem to marinate them in something kind of wonderful. The only problem is that the two times I have had the wings, they have never been crispy. I think when I go the next time, I will request that the wings be fried longer. I happened to stumble across this awesome BBQ place. Im a uber driver and disabled there were many places to choose from to stop for refueling the appettite. I pulled up I googled the place very good responses from what i saw. I scrolled thru the menu it all looked very good. I chose the pulled pork sandwich and fries. Okay me being disabled i called inside the store lo and behold they took my order and brought out to the curb. The interaction was awesome and had no problem running order outside to me. They even threw in a lemon pound cake for dessert. Stopped in on a whim and I am glad that I did! When I walked in I was greeted promptly as I was reading the menu. I ordered the Lunch special 4 wings and tips $9.99 with the mix sauce. I was shocked at the portion that I received as the container could barley close. As I took my first bite I was amazed at the flavor of the tips and the mixture with the sauce was perfect! The sauce had the perfect spice where you aren't sweating The tips didn't even need sauce. The wings were done to perfection! I got half way through before I realized there was fries on the bottom! This place is great! Cashier very courteous she advised me on lunch specials and gave me a sample of those delicious butter cookies they have for sale on the counter which I did purchase. Food was great I usually visit the Chicago location on 47th St and order turkey tip with mixed sauce. If I am ever in the area I will return. read more

The food is good, but the customer service could really use some major improvements. One of the employees there is extremely condescending, as if he is doing you a favor by you patronizing this business. Awesome ribs..! Wonderful sauce..! Sad to say that Uncle Johns will no longer get my business.. My experience has been that there is no consistency from one visit to the next.. One time a full slab of beef ribs will be just that, 'a full slab.' The next time a full slab will be closer to half that size. I've been to Uncle Johns four times since discovering this place a month or so ago and have spent a considerable amount of money.. Last night we went to Uncle Johns and bought a full slab of beef ribs and a half chicken. The ribs were few and way over cooked. The chicken was literally burnt to a crisp..! i was a regular at Uncle John on 69th St. here the price is too high for the amount you get and the sauce is not Uncle john's the owner told me he was his nephew well you need to go get the recipe for his sauce. I got the mixed it tasted like hot sauce. The hot Links do taste the same but the cuts of the tips were a lot of bones nothing like what you got from the original uncle John's. need to get better cuts of meat and bigger sizes for the price i paid 17.00 and some change for a combo which had about 15 tips in it never again! read more

We live in Hyde Park and have been followers of Uncle Johns since their store at 69th and Calumet, 87th & Cottage Grove (not cut from the same cloth), Richton Park and now the Homewood location. Their food has never disappointed. We visited the newest location in Homewood on January 28, 2017 @ 2:08pm. Their order process is confusing and some their electronic menu is not up to date. A customer before us ordered from it and was told they did not have it and the marque had not been updated. We chose to eat in and were enjoying our meal while watching what was on the television until the "noise" from the staff overpowered it. Their conversations were annoying and very offensive. I wonder if they would have been so comfortable and loud, leaving the door open to the preparation area if the owner would have been there? The food was exceptional (though we had to ask for more utensils and napkins). The facility was clean (including bathroom). read more

Purchased a carry out order of a half slab of spare ribs and asked for the small end with mild sauce. When I got home, I opened the package to find RIB TIPS cut into the shape of spare ribs !!! What a sham !!! There was also very little sauce on the imitation ribs !!! I called the store to voice my complaint, but could only get an answering machine !! My first time going here to try this food. I will say this is the first and last time trying them. the tips were dry, and tough. The fries were horrible as well. The sauce they use is by far the worst I have ever had, it taste like a clumpy tomatoe sauce with chili powder. They give you large portions but I would rather have small portions with good food!!! read more

This is an update to a prior posting that I did. Since my last posting I've tried the grilled turkey leg & turkey tips which I thought were both good. I ordered the small turkey tip one time and the large turkey tip another time. I noticed that from all my experience there so far that the barbecue sauce is never consistent. I always order the mix and it's very hot sometimes to kind of plain the next. Since opening up last month the prices went up a buck or so on a few items. Why raise your prices when you give so little, are not consistent with your barbecue sauce, and just opened up?! Why is your large turkey tip just a tad bigger then your small turkey tip and like $3.00 - $4.00 bucks more? The menu is missing a lot of the items that are sold at the Richton Park location. Homewood location doesn't take phone orders. Wait time varies, depending on how busy they are and they will tell you it will take 15 minutes but you end up waiting 45 minutes. There was only one time that they were actually finished at the time they said it would take. With all these negatives I'm going to have to change my star rating from 4 star to 1. I am sure I won't be back again even if they add more items to the menu and perfect their barbecue sauce. They just don't give you much for the amount you spend there! I'm just going to have to take that extra 15 minute drive to the better barbecue place that actually taste great all the time and doesn't charge you and arm and a leg for their products.
