I truly love Uncle Nat's, and I'm not just saying this to kiss their ass. As a bigger person of color, getting a brazilian has always been a frightening, anxiety inducing experience that also usually leaves me feeling pretty dysphoric - I have yet to feel this way here and I doubt I will. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I love that they have a strict policy about arriving at least 15 mins early, because I love getting places extra early and most other salons don't want you showing up that early, it also gives me time to regulate my nervous system, pee, jam out to their beautiful playlist, or decompress in whatever way I may need that day.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I also love that it's in a residential building because it honestly just feels like I'm visiting a friend and chillin on their couch for a bit. I rarely post reviews on this platform but absolutely had to because Uncle Nat is a miracle worker! I'm talking Miracle-Max-bringing-Westley-back-to-life level miracles here, people. I've been avoiding laser for a long time because I was afraid of the supposed pain and the lengthiness of the process, but Uncle Nat has made things comfortable for me. I started with a "Chat with Nat," and they addressed a lot of my anxieties by explaining what laser can accomplish and how. A couple of weeks later, I've taken the plunge! The space at Uncle Nat's is beautiful, clean, and inviting. (It smells great, and there's fancy Le Labo in the bathroom). Okay so boom! I have skin irritation from home hair removal so my dermatologist was like, you should get laser hair removal. The process at Uncle Nat's is seamless and it's been one of the best investments I've ever made. It's in the neighborhood and it's super affordable in comparison to many other options within the city. I've had about 5 sessions so far. After my first session I saw about 80-90% hair loss. After the second session I'd say there was about 95% hair loss. The staff here are great, so nice and accommodating and they do everything to make sure you are comfortable for your sessions. They were extremely knowledgeable about their lasers which was very important, especially for those of us who are more melanated. They treat me with care and respect each time I come in and my results are fantastic. I mostly work with Uncle Nat and I couldn't be more comfortable with our sessions. No more razor bumps, ingrown hairs, or hyperpigmentation. I'm embodying the life of a wet hairless baby dolphin lol ready for summer 2022. Trust the other bad reviews! I don't know how else to get their attention. There's seriously a problem going on here and I hope the owner listens. Their policy will be their downfall. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to give this place a poor review. I've gone in the past and had excellent work. Bare with me cause this may be lengthy.. but I started sugaring with Natalie in July of this year. What l drew me into their business most was how open and welcoming it seemed for the more marginalized groups of people, including POC and sex workers. Especially the sugar fund because it gave help to those who couldn't afford the full price of their services! However I started noticing over the months that it just became increasingly harder to take advantage of the sugar fund. I had also never agreed with the way 24 hour cancellations are handled nor that mandatory 20% added on to each service. I was aware I couldn't get 50% off each time, but in reality that's all I could afford and I didn't want to lose the perfect esthetician cause I couldn't keep up. So two weeks ago, I came to them, first asking what the 20% really stood for and then also being completely honest about my financial ability to keep coming. Their response to what the 20% accounted for was basically a mandatory tip, which in itself is absurd. They went on further to explain they want to make sure that their employees stay at a certain income because they have lives to support... but do customers not also? So I responded that they basically admitted the 20% had nothing to do with feeling like the service is worth more but simply to keep their employees comfortable- absurd. Even then though, I made suggestions on how they could avoid their employees being fucked over while still being considerate to the client, things like deposits. I was left on seen. At that point, because I was still in need of a wax at the moment as it had been 4 weeks, I decided to go to one of their employees rather than them so that I could get my last wax and be done with the company. I booked for a pre care, under arm and Brazilian but ended up only doing the Brazilian and a quarter belly, no pre care no underarms. During the session, the employee explains to me that sugar fund is capped at 15% from now on (but what happened to up to 50%? Lol). I told the employee that I know I can't use 50% all the time but I haven't the past 3 times and my budget is literally $50 right now. To which that employee agreed to charge me $49.66. I didn't check my card after leaving the service but got a text later that day saying there had been a mistake and I was only charged $32.66, which was indeed correct. But then Natalie goes on to say that the employee was supposed to cap at 15% and that the 20% service fee had not been charged with it (but the total charge should've included that already as it normally does) AND that I actually have to pay for the services I booked, not the ones I received. So they wanted me to pay for a pre care and underarms that I didn't do. I actually have a screenshot of them in August saying that it doesn't matter what you put in the books, we work with the time that's left and with what you request when you get there (which is logical because do people not change their minds?). Just like that my total went from $49.66 to $143.18. I told Natalie they lost their mind and that half of their statements were contradictions. I was again left on read. And that's just a few of their issues because I've never met someone who complains so much about their issues when they're supposed to be looking out for the lesser. They actually had the nerve to tell me, when I responded to their 4 LONG paragraphs of feedback on my suggestions with equally long paragraphs that they had intense reading challenges (ha!). Or that because they have back disabilities (I myself have a herniated disk) and it makes it easier on them to do pumpkin pre care before hand that now customers should pay $10 more for that service. Or even more humorous that simply because you're booking with Natalie rather than her students, your Brazilian will be $10 more, again, for no logical reason. Natalie you are a disappointment truly and I'm disgusted with the way you handled our conversation. Nat and the whole team at Uncle Nat's is rad! I've been doing sugaring for some time as it helped with ingrowns, but I've yet to find someone as knowledgeable (and doing it correctly) in NYC. But! After speaking with Nat I decided that it was time to commit to Laser hair removal! Especially because I suffer from HS, which I haven't been able to find a Dr that can treat it. Nat totally guided me through the process, knew fully about my condition (more than my drs!) and goes above and beyond in making laser a pleasant experience. But they also showed personal interest in helping me build a routine and plan to treat my condition as well as the years of scarring it has caused. Laser is a bit "stingy" but Nat does great at communicating and reading body language. And will fly through a session super quick. It may be a little strange at first. It'll seem like your hair is growing in like normal. But it'll start to fall away over the next couple weeks then grow back in patches. This is why those follow up sessions are needed to keep it off. I was outside the door at 1:35 (appointment time was at 1:30pm) and as soon as I entered, they said I missed my appointment. Right on the dot. 2 min later another client came in. First of all, how are you booking people so closely back to back when a service like Brazilian laser and underarm doesn't take only 10 minutes. That's disrespectful to the client. You are rushing and squeezing them in when I have paid you a $400 that people do not just have laying around. If you expect respect for your time respect the clients time too. Second, I understand we sign policies, but as a first timer and only having crossed the grace period by a hair, for you to reject me for the 1 minute is totally inhuman and inconsiderate. So i've been coming here since September of last year for laser hair removal on my lower face. I am a black trans woman, and removing my beard was integral to me feeling like myself and being comfortable in my own skin. Since the onset of our appointments, I have sensed a subtlety transphobic, white feminist vibe from the staff here - a vibe in which my trans-womanhood felt resented and was made the elephant in the room every time I came for an appointment. They constantly talk negatively about their clients behind their back, almost immediately after they leave, which doesn't quite seem to align with their allegedly all-inclusive ethos, or lack thereof. A vast majority of their clientele is white and cisgender, which should've been a red flag to me but I chose to ignore it because I was admittedly swooned by their facade of professionalism they operate under. I am charged different amounts each time I come, even though I come for the same service every single time. Each time they offered an explanation that sounded barely believable and yet I persisted with booking with them. This should've been another red flag, but I chose again to ignore my intuition about Uncle Nat's. I cannot consciously recommend any service by Uncle Nat's to anyone who is POC, TGNC, or any intersecting identities which fall along either spectrum. Erika did my laser and was so thorough and patient. I've never had someone examine my skin so painstakingly , shaving hairs I had missed, outlining the area, etc to ensure a smooth process. No pain at all, quick and easy. I'm also having some pigmentation issues in the area that was lasered and felt self-conscious about it being seen but Erika made me feel so comfortable. I started my lasering journey in February/March 2022. Intermittently I have done a couple sugaring treatments but primarily laser. Prior to starting laser treatments, the hair in my Brazilian and underarm area grew in very coarse and wiry (which is odd because that's not the case on the rest of my body). I often would get ingrown hairs and struggle with discomfort when I allowed my body hair to grow out. At the end of the summer (maybe September?) I decided to try growing out my body hair (slightly to save money but mainly because I wanted to just see how it would go). It's now almost February 2023 and I'm only now feeling the need to get my hair removed again. I have had no itching, at most one ingrown (if that), and the texture of the hair is completely different. It no longer is coarse and wiry (which I imagine is what caused the itchiness). I don't have to exfoliate those areas as often and I feel more body confidence because of it. I have never been sugared or waxed (aside from eyebrows) in my life, and was getting curious about it. Despite the fact that I am not very interested in hair removal because my body hair grows pretty light and thin (wherever it does grow) I decided I would add some body hair maintenance to my self-care routine. Booking was super easy to do online. I booked the first time bikini extended and underarms. I was nervous about pain and also having my private areas on display for a total stranger. So cue even more nerves when the morning of my appointment arrives and it turns out I had to go to a doctors appointment, with my toddler in tow. Am I going to be late? What will I do with this rambunctious tiny human while I'm getting sugared? Will they turn me away at the door and say no kids allowed? I didn't know, but I couldn't cancel the appointment so I had to wing it. I did make it on time, thankfully, I even had time to stop by a cafe and grab a coffee for myself and a pastry for my baby. When I got there, Erika welcomed me (us) and we went though the new client intake routine as my daughter tried to escape her confines of the stroller and accidentally spilled my coffee all over the floor. I was so embarrassed, but Erika (a mother herself) was patient and understanding and gave me some stuff to clean it up. When I got on the table, fully prepared for pain and feeling awkward, my daughter saw the gloves and the headlight on Erika...and apparently her little toddler brain processed this unfamiliar situation as "mommy being tortured", she freaked the heck out. My daughter is typically fearless, but she totally ran and hid behind her stroller in the corner and started bawling. Poor thing. I got off the table to comfort her, picked her up and gave her kisses and hugs and told her it was okay. I lied back down on the table with her on me. My baby relaxed quickly, burying her face into my chest and neck with sighs and sniffles. Erika proceeded with the sugaring all the while my daughter lied on top of me so she didn't have to watch. I'm sure it wasn't ideal but Erika worked around that and never once acted like my baby was inconveniencing or annoying her. I didn't feel judged, the environment is fresh and welcoming, and VERY accepting. Thank you to Erika for making it easy for me to get this done despite life's little obstacles. The pain was way less than I expected, it was tolerable and it was over very quick! It's been about two weeks since I had my appointment and I barely see any stubble growing back. This was my first time getting any type of body hair removal service. So I came in pretty green and ready to understand the sugaring process a bit more. An employee named Jacqueline did a great, thorough job of explaining their services, mission, core values and the reasoning behind their practices. Knowing that their mission was to make all folks feel comfortable and affirmed in a spa setting was a nice touch. At the end of our initial meeting, I asked Jacqueline a technical question about the sugaring process, and then Natalie came in and filled in the blanks for me. For my first session both Natalie and Jacqueline did my sugar, and to be honest if you've never had any hair removal done, and have a rather low pain tolerance like myself, it is a bit of a shock and can be painful. But it is tolerable, and they gave me time to breath, take a moment whatever I need to do before continuing on. And the full length mirror they have for you to check your satisfaction with the service at the end of your waxing was very helpful and nice! Overall it was a pretty pleasant experience. My only constructive critiques are the following: 1. It would have made me feel more comfortable if all staff were wearing medical grade masks (surgical or KN95's) since this is a very intimate physical space and an even more intimate service that is being provided. Especially if there is any coughing or sneezing happening. 2. While I was laying down on the table, right before we were starting the waxing, Natalie told me that I needed a required pre-care service to be done before the sugar - either the regular or the deluxe version. Being in a vulnerable position laying down about to start a service, I felt a little caught off guard. I naturally opted for the regular priced exfoliation because this was an additional cost that wasn't made extremely clear. It would be great if this was told while doing the new client in-take with Jacqueline, while fully clothed and sitting up, and if it were automatically added when you book the "1st time Brazilian/bikini" on the website. Really great service. They make you feel welcomed and at home. Very clean and patient. They offer additional services like a pumpkin pre-care treatment to make the experience even more comfortable. I also like that they welcome all genders and are inclusive. It's a bit out of the way for me but worth the trip to Brooklyn. It's located in a cozy apartment setting with a rooftop. Compared to other sugar waxing spas, it's on the pricey side. Note they have a very strict 24 hour cancellation policy, so be sure to make it on time or you'll be charged the full price plus tip.
