    Ilford supplies.

I love this film lab! I received to best customer service, quality of prints and digital copies. They also have a cool store inside with photo books, zines, Ilford/Kodak supplies, film and some clothing. Overall price was worth it, and I will come back more and more.

    Developing a 120 roll

FILM LAB IN EAST BAY I developed my first roll of 120 film here this week. It was a very simple, quick and easy process. Step 1. Go to their website and place your order on how you want your film developed, processed, prints, sleeved, digital copiesm etc. Step 2. Drop off film, contactless. You enter the store and place your film in a ziplock with your order number and contact info. Step 3. Wait for email when they start processing it. Step 4. Email confirmation when the digital copies are ready for you to view in a Dropbox and when to pick up your roll of film. I dropped my film off Monday just before closing and received my digital prints in my email on Wednesday at Lunch. It was Quick!!! I called in multiple times to ask questions on how to use their website and every worker was amazing!!!!! They all took the time to make sure I understood everything. I also bought a few rolls of new film to shoot with. Excited to come back here again.

Horizontal (vertical bc of orientation) scan lines in the lab's scan (left). My scan (right) shows those lines aren't on the negative

I really wanted to like this lab; everything around the process is a great experience. Great service from staff who are excited to 'talk shop,' fast turnaround, and low prices. It's also convenient that you can drop off and pick up at Glass Key in SF. I understand why they have such a good reputation. Unfortunately, the quality of processing leaves a lot to be desired. My first roll I dropped off with them had some sort of artifacts from the sprocket holes on the image. In most of them it gets lost in the details, but in a couple it kind of ruins what were going to be good shots. In the example here (telephone pole), I have increased the contrast a bit to highlight the issue. When I asked about it, they said it looks like there was a brief, dim light leak in the dark room, and the film cast a shadow on itself. They said they'd comp a roll for me, so I was willing to accept that this was a fluke and decided to give them a second chance. However, with my second roll there are horizontal scan lines across pretty much the entire strip. I know this happened in scanning because I made a scan of my own using a digital camera. Obviously my scan leaves a lot to be desired, but it does show that the lines aren't on the negative (Airplane photo: lab scan on left, my scan on right). On top of this my negatives were returned to me uncut even though I asked for them cut and sleeved. Since this was a comped roll maybe they didn't want to include cutting for free since that isn't where they messed up before; that would have been super reasonable, but I wish they'd have said that when I dropped the roll off. I picked this roll up at Glass Key so I wasn't at the lab, so I just took it as is. Overall, quality is not emphasized here, but pretty much everything else is. If I was shooting professionally, I'd be extremely upset about the results. As it is, I'm just a little sad this place didn't work out for me because otherwise, it had all the marks of a great lab.

Up: the film processed by the lab. Down: the film processed by myself which completely fit the Kodak files.

It is astonishing that local people think their quality is great! For the negatives :The base of film is really red, which means that their processing is not only bad but completely wrong! For the slide films: The film is quite dark, means the first develop medicine fails. Conclusion: they use expensive professional machines but make horrible results. It means there is no quality control(Kodak or Fuji control strips), which is necessary for the big machines, since the machine use medicines for many times. Though the service is good and makes me happy, but the result is terrible! The good reputation only means that people in Bay Area is unlucky, they never went to a lab with is okay.

Covid update: they are taking drop offs at the physical location as well as mails with rolls, if you are interested in getting your films developed. They are also doing a discounted price per roll: $5 per roll - but this might last only till end of May. Kind and friendly staff, timely and professional service. An Oakland gem! Thank you for working during this time and adapting to covid cirx

Memento Press, what can I say, you really came through! I am leaving this because I'm ecstatic with…read morethe results. I'm a professional photographer and I had a client request a sexy yet tasteful boudoir photobook. I looked at several online vendors and they *almost* had what I wanted but I only had 3 weeks to ship before she presented to her partner. My concerns was that I had to trust an online vendor to get it there on time and have the right level of quality for the amount paid. I called a local Oakland press, Memento and talked to Josh the owner. He made me aware of even better options after looking at my photos and graphics and suggested a different type of layout/papertype that was suited for her level of sophistication and book quality. I sent the proof and specs, and within a few days they (thanks Sheryl!) produced a gorgeous leatherette black covered book with high quality matte paper with a slight laminate, perfect. Now the suspense was killing me, what did she think? The answer arrived this morning as I woke up to the clients text: "I got the book! It's beautiful. Thank you Kelly. For making me feel beautiful and helping me create this. I am forever grateful." I'm over the moon that they pulled this off and the client who has high standards loved it. So if you need exquisite quality by folks who know their stuff and an owner that has a great sense of what is needed and style, go to Memento press! Looking forward to doing more business with them in the future. Thank you.

I started coming here six years ago to augment the lab time and instruction I was getting in school. Their darkroom was my happy place for a long time and was fairly priced. What impressed me the most about their gorgeous space was that they encouraged clients to get their work off their screens and onto the walls. Literally, any time I had a question about anything related to photography or printing, Stuart, Ed, Constance, Chrysta, or Nathan would make the time for me and help me out or give me feedback. I enjoyed printing there and always left feeling inspired because they were so kind, knowledgeable, and professional. I actually found him after speaking with a different boudoir photography company whose ad I had seen on Instagram; I decided to do some research before committing to anyone, and found Cheshire on Yelp, checked out his website, and put in an inquiry. He called me very quickly and the conversation was so different from the other places I spoke with! Instead of just laying out "here's how it works, here's what you get for this price," etc., he asked a lot about what I was looking for, what I hoped to get out of it, my motivations or inspirations, etc. That personal touch carried throughout the experience. He consistently made an effort to understand what I was looking for--from the planning process to the photo shoot to going through the photos afterward--to make sure that I got exactly what I was hoping for. The photos themselves are absolutely awesome. It's incredible the different looks and feels he creates in a relatively small studio. More importantly, he just has an incredible eye for what is going to look good and how to create looks, moods, etc. I felt super comfortable the whole time, and I think that shows in the final product. Everyone who has seen my pictures has been blown away. He's way more than just a photographer; he's a true artist. Never in a million years had I ever imagined having a giant naked photo of myself on my wall, and yet here we are...and everyone who's seen it has been amazed. Can't recommend him highly enough!
