They also sell film here! It takes 30 mins for me to get here by bus from downtown Oakland, but it's well worth it. I won't go to another lab. read more

I recently had a panoramic photo taken using my iPhone and I wanted to have a print of it made. Many of the photo places don't have panoramic photo printing available and the ones online will take a week or so to have it shipped. Montclair 1 Hour Photo can have photos made in less than an hour. I came on Sunday around 2:30, they quickly airdropped my panoramic photo to their iMac, found the best size for me which was 8x24, printed and framed my photo in 30 minutes. Later, I needed two posters made for my husband's memorial service. I was able to design and order them online with ease. They offered a great selection of sizes and finishes. 'Montclair Photo' is an understated name of a place that does so many great things with photos! We've been going there for 25 years and have always had the best service, the best photos, photo projects, Christmas Cards, special events, and all of our family photo memories. Recently, our son got married, and we had to gather old photos of him, his bride, and their families from past and present generations. Taking a picture of the pictures, or scanning them, is not ideal, and cropping out unwanted backgrounds and restoring old ones that are damaged or faded is a monumental task. Paul and his expert team of photo geniuses not only restored our photos, but made them like new! Paul also helped me select the correct sizes and frames that would fit the photos, ensuring that all the subjects and parts we wanted to see were perfectly placed. Even though he and his staff are extremely busy with photo development, special projects, digital work, transferring photos and video, and converting images to digital, among other tasks, Paul made an extra effort. He worked past his workday to ensure we had the pictures by the wedding. Alison was a huge help, too, and is so knowledgeable. The staff were helpful and patient, explaining many of the processes required to complete our project. I had to visit the shop on many days for various reasons, such as to add more photos I had found, and each time they were welcoming and happy to help with anything we needed. It was a great relief, as I had tried to edit them myself using my own photo editing applications. I'm just an amateur and had a lot of other wedding preparations to attend to, so I could never have done justice to the photos as Montclair Photo did. Such an incredible result. The guests love the framed photos and were so impressed, they're still talking about them. Many people asked us later if they could have copies of some of them, so I went back to Montclair Photo to get more prints after the wedding. The frames Paul showed me from the store were exquisite, and came in sizes and colors that are impossible to find in the usual frame stores. I was shocked by some of the negative reviews. Yes, they are very busy and sometimes short-staffed. That's because they do the best work in the Bay Area. The community that Montclair Photo serves is also somewhat demanding, to the point that the store has to post signs asking customers to be patient, as employees are doing the best they can with the volume of business. And yes, people may find the prices higher than those at other photo places, such as CVS or Shutterfly. That's because Paul and his team are top-notch specialists and Believe me, 'You get what you pay for' - the BEST! The bride and groom created a program for the wedding and had 150 of them printed, but they were awful. At the last minute, he brought them to Paul, who adjusted the original and printed all of them, and they were perfect in every way, just in the nick of time. They were so worried and then so thrilled that he could help them out. These projects, if not done well, would have put a damper on all the planning, though they weren't the main elements for a wedding. However, if you've ever given a wedding, you know you want everything to be as perfect as it can be. We are grateful that Montclair Photo understood this and did an excellent job, and they made the time in their schedules to finish it before the wedding. We've loved Montclair Photo for 25 years, developing our 'film', but as I said before, they do so much more. I recommend them to anyone working on special projects, as well as those who need to print photos. I wanted to share pictures with a dear friend who isn't big on digital photos via screens. I picked the best 12 and uploaded jpegs (iPhone, regular and panoramas, DSLR regular pix.) I picked 4 X 6 for 3:2 and cropped iPhone pix, two 4 X 18 inch panoramas, for the biggest, and 4 X 12 for the medium pano. Picking sizes was painless and I got easy fits for the panos- just kept making them wider until all the vertical info fit. Paid by paypal, wrote a shopping list and stopped in before the grocery store to see how long it would take- the last panoramas were coming out right then. Less than an hour, start to finish. Nice people, excellent prints, easy web site. Perfect. read more

I come here for film processing and usually get my scans within the day, which is impressive! My scans turn out amazing everytime and I love how friendly and helpful everyone who works here is. I'm fairly new to film and have had a few mishaps with rewinding my film, exposing my film, and improperly loading a roll into my camera and getting empty rolls developed (I know!!!! So embarrassing!!!!)... but the people here have always been so nice, patient, and reassuring about it--as in they always boost up my morale whenever I start panicking about messing up and not knowing what to do. It feels really encouraging continuing this new hobby when you have a good go to film processing spot with the best and friendliest! I attached a few sample photos I got developed and scanned here for reference. Obviously I'm a happy customer and highly recommend them for your film needs! Something to consider though is that the film they sell here are a bit pricier but I'm also all about supporting local businesses and making sure they thrive so it's not a problem for me personally. Came here for passport photos. They have a little pulldown backdrop in the middle of the store where they take your photo. They'll ask what country you need your visa/passport for (different countries have different size requirements). Take your photo, and tell you to come back in 20 min. Service-wise: 5/5 Pricing: $16 + tax for 3 photos. Definitely not Costco pricing (RIP). Not sure how competitive it is pricing-wise. read more

Today I called in to ask about some recent scans which seemed grainier than what I'm used to. I wanted to see if it was due to user error (me) or perhaps it could be scanned differently. We looked through some images together and they explained a lot about the process. They even offered to rescan the roll for me. Very helpful thus far. I got the images back shortly after but noticed some of them came out very differently (see examples below, dark image: original scan, bright image: new scan) I called in again to ask what was done differently so I know what to ask for next time. I was connected to the person who scanned my negatives and this why I'm writing this constructive review. This person was impatient with me and didn't have much interest in making sure I understood what happened. Eventually I concluded that the difference I was seeing was because only grain reduction was done (at least that's what I think). I was lectured on how professional photographers use LR/PS to get the final Images they want and it wasn't up to the lab to do correct. I'm not a pro, but I could've told you that and I don't mind making adjustments. What I'm interested in is for some guidance since the scans came out quite differently in my opinion, you tell me. I wanted to know what happens when I submit future rolls - do I get images like set A or set B? The lack of interest became obvious when I was told the "we're actually closing soon" line - I called at 5:20pm, total phone call was 11 mins, and the hours say open until 6pm. My previous experience with film labs is that they're super helpful and willing to help make sure I get the images I'm happy with. The previous folks I spoke to were very helpful, hence the 3 stars, but I must've caught this person at a bad day (I hope). Hope this provides some constructive feedback. read more

We needed a restoration of a 1970's black and white business photo that was stored in boxes for years. The sides were torn into the actual picture. When your family needs non-American passport photos, a common pain is getting photos done. They just have different requirements. I was very happy that Montclair Photo wasn't bothered at all by my request for German passport photos and told me they'll do photos for any country. They turned the photos around in 45min and were incredibly friendly. They were great with my little kids too, and managed to talk them through the annoyingly specific photo. read more

If you shoot analogue and are looking to build a relationship with a local lab for development/scans---go somewhere else. (The gritty) I really wanted to be a loyal customer at Montclair 1 Hour Photo, but after a pattern of subpar customer treatment I've decided to develop my film elsewhere. I really felt the employees didn't care about my images or my questions. My 120 film rolls (multiple) were also cut right to the edge of the first exposure, leaving about a third portion of every first image to end up undeveloped. I guess I'll just crop them awkwardly narrow abandoning any means of a suitable composition. When I pointed this out to an employee, all I wanted was an apology because at least that might suggest that they won't screw it up next time. Too expensive for such silly mistakes. Do better. I only write this because I don't want someone else to lose their images. read more

Iffy quality for a high price!! But super convenient, so I went anyway. It's nice that there's still an actual store where you can develop prints. FYI, if y'all don't already know this, you can also store your digital photos on a flash drive, take them to your local CVS, and print them for 1/10th the price. If you're not having them do anything special to your photos, you can pretty much do everything Montclair Photo does at CVS: crop, edit, select size (5x6, 8x10 etc) and print glossy or matte, with or without a border. I'm not exactly sure what you pay for here, to be honest - you do all the work yourself while sitting at a kiosk. Edit your photos, hit the print button, and presto! The machine prints them out a few hours later. Some of my prints came out so poorly that I actually asked one of the employees about it... Apparently even if your digital pics look sharp and crisp on your camera, they'll look fuzzy when you print them. I was told to "look at the warning on the computer," as if that somehow changed the outcome. I didn't email the files or compress them (which I was accused of doing, which was weird) - I actually printed them in the same format they were taken, so resolution shouldn't have been significantly compromised. Summary: Great place to go if a) you need to print photos in a rush and don't want to go to CVS, and b) you're willing to pay top dollar for mediocre resolution. read more

I've always appreciated this conveniently located, high quality photo and printing shop in our neighborhood for passport pictures, film developing, and misc print jobs. The team has always been courteous and attentive. But recently they went above and beyond in providing a service experience I will never forget. A family member was missing amidst a mental health crisis and our family was incredibly concerned for their safety. We needed to print hundreds of fliers quickly on a Sunday morning. It's not easy to find printing shops open on Sunday, let alone before 10am, but Montclair Photo delivered. We sent them our file and they had hundreds of copies ready within 10 minutes of them opening and us calling. They printed an extra and posted it in their window without us even asking. Finally, they offered a discount for the print job given the nature of the situation. The kindness, responsiveness, and generosity they showed just blew my family and me away and reminded us of the goodness in the world. read more

I have been a frequent customer of Montclair Photo and never encountered the rudeness, unprofessionalism and mistreatment I encountered today. I picked up reprint photos I ordered the previous day and noticed that one was missing due to an error made by the employee who took my order. I was told by the manager that I could wait two hours to get the reprint, which I wasn't happy about. I then said I would pick the photo up the next day, but he could at least apologize for the mistake. That set him off, so he became belligerent, tossed my photos in the garbage and told me to leave denying me the possibility of paying for the existing photos. Neither he, nor any other employee would give me contact information for the owner, not even his name. The reasons the manager gave me when I asked why he wouldn't allow me to pay for the existing photos or give me at least the name of the owner were his personal dislikes, making comments such as, "I don't want to," "I don't like you," "I don't care," and adding that he ripped up the photos. Based on previous one-star reviews, and my experience with the staff both in person and over the phone, I am not likely to get a return call from the owner. My overall impression of employees and management, is they frankly don't give a damn about customer satisfaction! read more

Very unprofessional communication. I entered the shop around 10 minutes before closing. One employee said they will be closed soon. Remaining time was pretty enough for me to get the printing service. I asked questions about the user interface of the pc to print my photos quickly as possible. They didn't even bother to help me. According to the reviews, owner may have helped me later when he saw me struggling. I asked another question to finalize my order and same employee replied to me something similar to: "I will not be paid in one minute, so I can't answer your question." If you are not willing to help the customer within the last 10 minutes before your closing time then why don't you update your closing time for an earlier time, so no one wastes their time coming to your shop? No one deserves your rude answers and negativity. I read some other 1 star reviews and I see the same pattern in the answers given to the customers. I cancelled my order. It seems like this shop is always right and all those customers are hallucinating some negative experiences(!) read more
