They do 10 SHOWS A WEEK! They work hard, and have an improv school for all levels. I had a great time at a Yelp event, then stayed for the historical Seattle improv. It was pretty cool! I've never seen something that was semi-scripted like that, with great audience interaction. It's also in an iconic Seattle place, AT THE GUM WALL.... under the Pike Place Market. There are some good places for food and drink nearby (radiator whiskey, The Zig Zag Cafe, etc.), and decent parking below the market near the waterfront or in Belltown. It's also kind of close to the 550 and 554 bus stops for people coming from the Eastside. They also have A BAR inside!!!!! Hello!?!?!?!?!?! THAT'S AWESOME. They have wine, beer, whiskey... $7 for a whiskey shot and a PBR tall boy. Enough said. I was treated to some Theatresports for my birthday and really enjoyed myself. No it wasn't like "Who's Line is it Anyway" but you have to understand just how difficult improv is. Know that these actors have practiced quite a bit to do what they're doing. Imagine yourself up there. It's not about the laugh out loud value of every line. That said, there were some amateur feeling improv moments. Overall the group I was with, which included some older women, really enjoyed it. The bar is limited to beer so it's not a full service night club. It's a Seattle institution though and if you want to do something with a group, it's great fun. A movie might have higher production value but here you get to look over at your friends and interact with what's going on. You'll leave with more memories than had you gone to a movie or sat at home and played XBox. read more

Saw "Cotton Gin" last night for the first time. What an awesome show! Probably the best improv I've ever seen. I loved the unbridled limits to creativity that the puppets seemed to afford. I also loved the vocal jazz interludes between scenes as commentary on the progression of the story - such an enjoyable addition and a creative way to articulate what the audience is also feeling! I so enjoy the work that you all do! read more

So much fun!!! Was here for my first Seattle Yelp Elite event, and they threw us a great show. The space was medium but felt intimate. Even though I was in the back row I felt I had a great view of everything that was going on. I honestly wouldn't have thought such a gem was behind all that disgusting gum by Pike Place. Would recommend anyone to attend any subsequent shows put on by this group. One star lost only due to the fact they had only ONE female player that evening. Yes, she also emceed, but let's see more funny ladies on stage, m'kay? Otherwise, you'll make Tina Fey and Amy Poehler cry. read more

I've been to Market Theatre to enjoy Unexpected Productions many times, and last night a group of 10 of us went to see their Christmas Carol improv. I feel like if I'm sharing the love with my friends then I need to share via yelp as well. My cheeks tend to hurt after an evening of Unexpected Productions improv, and I always seem to be uncontrollably laughing. It is a really great time, and a great place to bring folks for an interesting and unconventional night out. There's a bar in the lobby so you can have some social time before show time, and even bring some libations in with you to aid in the laughter. Not that you'll need it...the troop always jokes well on their feet, and it is especially fun to join in the production. Come prepared to give suggestions and have the story take that oh so hilarious unexpected turn. Weeknight shows are a little roomier in the theatre, but even on packed nights it's a blast. I hadn't seen live improv in quite some time when I finally came to check our Unexpected Productions. They did not dissapoint. The players are funny, witty, and I do love that they came out and greeted us at the door and in the lobby. I can tell they care very much about what they do and their theater. You might have seen some improv on TV if you've seen Whose Line Is It Anyway, but if you watched Upright Citizens Brigade way back in the day, the structure is more like that. They also have types of improv shows and different themes on different nights, so be sure to check out the many different productions they have. No two shows will ever be the same! I had a question about their club, they actually called me back!! Unlike other clubs nearby. I had a marvelous time here and don't regret a thing about coming. I attended their improve Saturday evening Sportstheatre session. It was a hoot. Two teams competing against each other for points to be deemed the funnier team. What I love about it, there are no repeated materials because everything is fed off of the audience. For about $15 a person and the amount of entertainment I got from it, it was worth the price. read more

The venue is nicely located in the heart of Pike Place market! Just swing down to Post Alley and have yourself a very memorable night at Unexpected Productions!!! The show was filled with witty and cleaver lines, delivering laughter at every turn! Best of all this place doesn't try to break you bank while entertaining you! I've been to a few improv shows and have had a lot of exposure to the drama/theater realm where improv is common warm-ups, but these guys take it to the max! Improv is pure spontaneity, but with these guys, you'd think they had a script beforehand. For example, I've never seen an improv opera scene where Sarah and the other improv people are actually singing opera. And sound close to the real thing. Really friendly people and comfy seating. Highly recommend for those who would like to LOL, LMAO, or LMFAO. read more

It was a random Friday night & we didn't know what to do so an Improv show it was! It was truth of dare style. There were a total of 6 participants and they picked truth/dare and had to attempt with the audience as judges to rate 1-5 (the points they get). The people up on stage are not random people! They work for this place. They were all great and actually made me laugh HAHA some was awkward but that's what makes it interesting. I would probably come back for another show! Super-hilarious for sure! We were both laughing hysterically, more so me (I was literally at the edge of my seat in laughter). But then again, it really doesn't take much to make me laugh, but they were definitely without-a-doubt funny. We will surely visit again, again, and again. Disclaimer: Some of the audience members get quite annoying depending on their level of drunken-ness, so laugh a little louder to drown them out. read more

Hilarious! Came here for an elite event and stayed for the second show. During the event we won tickets to come back for another one! What can I say, we're fans! Best group of chip and dales dancers with alternative bodies, ever! This is a great twist on a date night. Not too much more expensive than a movie. The booze is reasonable and so is the concession stand. read more

WOW. Just saw this tonight. I had such a good time. I have never laughed so hard and this was my first ever comedy show. The actors are very talented, they do it all....from comedy to musical. By far the best 12 bucks you can spend. Even better than a movie, and I watch movies all the time. The theatre is getting renovated (they are doing a improvathon.......48 hours of strait improv to raise money) so that will help with the uncomfortable seats. But id sit in those any day to watch them again. read more

First time to Theatresports a few weeks ago - LOVED IT. HILARIOUS. Can't remember the last time I laughed that hard. You can participate if you want but they don't call on anyone who isn't voluntarily raising their own hand (so your jerk friends can't get you into anything against your will!). Tickets are cheap and so are drinks - you get more than you pay for on both counts. Really nice people running it, too. All in all a great night out for very little expense. Can't wait to go back!! 6/1/14 Been back a few times and I have to say there have been really funny nights and just kinda funny nights. Still 5 stars because comedy is subjective and because I truly believe the odds are in your favor that you're gonna enjoy it. Definitely worth the price of admission. We came here on Valentine's Day for the love comedy improv show. We didn't know what to expect and this is my first time to an improv show. I must say I was very impressed and found myself laughing non stop. Very creative and the audience was outstanding which really made a huge difference. At the beginning of the show they were throwing out to the crowds pink and red stuffed toys and that really got the crowd hyped up. I would come back for future shows and if you check in on Yelp you get free popcorn, now how bad can that be? read more

Would have been a nice experience but one of the acts seemed more like insult comedy... they could tell I did want attention but singled me out anyway...then called me socially awkward... like no Duh get a clue hence why I was doing everything to avoid eye contact...the performer felt more like a bully.. yet then part of the act is supposed to be acceptances...quite hypocritical.... read more

We had some extra ferry passes that we needed to use ASAP so we decided to do a date night in Seattle on a weekday. I've been to improv in Chicago and San Fran so I thought Seattle improv would be a great way to spend our date night. Unexpected Productions seemed like a great idea given that they are located a short trip from the ferry, have rave reviews on Yelp, and tickets were only $6. Other good parts of the night were that they have pretty cheap drinks ($5 for a glass of wine). We also got a free popcorn for checking in on Yelp. Despite all of these great things though, I can't give the review greater than 2 stars because the improv was not good. I had 3 drinks in me by the time they came on stage and I barely chuckled the whole night. My husband (who is a lot easier to please) also didn't find it funny. Maybe we don't get Seattle humor? Maybe the improv is better on the weekends? I'm not sure, but it didn't compare at all to the improv I've seen in Chicago or San Fran. read more

I've been to the Market Theater several times for different shows, and I'm universally impressed with the productions. Theatersports is always funny, but its quality varies with the performers. Go with a group and participate in the sketches and you're guaranteed a good time, though. Different types of improv shows go on throughout the week, featuring seasoned performers and new talent. They periodically have special scripted shows, like this month's Jungle Woman of the Jungle (it's worth the trip), that feature both actors from Unexpected Productions and other local talent. This is an awesome alternative to your standard bar outing. And, it beats the hell out of a movie. read more

Came for an Elite Yelp, event was thoroughly entertaining! Nice little decorations throughout and I thought the "yelp corn" bags were pretty sweet! I think well drinks were free... but the line to the bar was a mile long and didn't feel like finding out for myself. The show itself was very entertaining. The actors and actress were funny and engaged the audience well. There were definitely some "different" suggestions and situations that some audience members threw out... but they took them in stride and made the best of them. Husband and I go see TheatreSports at least twice a month. At one point, we were going every Saturday for a few months straight! We are teetotalers, so I can't really speak to how good the onsite bar is, but judging by the amount of drunk a-holes in the audience on any given weekend, I'm assuming it's fabulous! The theatre itself is clearly not new. It's definitely worn and comfortable. The shows, too, can be sort of hit and miss, depending on so many factors: performer experience, audience suggestions, audience behavior, etc. I've seen shows where I nearly peed myself laughing and shows where I've only laughed once or twice. However, I've met and spoken with most of the performers, and they're all really funny, genuinely cool people who give every show their all. If you go in with an open mind, and a few thoughtful suggestions (nothing crazy or out there; they really don't need you to go to excess), and an intent on actually attempting to participate in the spirit of the show, you will have a great time! Oh, and don't bring your freaking kids! You ruin it for everyone when you do. read more

After dinner a group of us headed over to the Market Theater to catch the Unexpected Productions comedy show. This improv show featured 2 teams battling it out to be crowned winner for the week. The returning champs when I was there was "His and Hernia," while "Nerds in Costumes" were the challengers. Tickets to the show were $15 and I actually won "runner up" for best audience contribution of the night (I suggested "Mister Rogers" when asked for a childhood show). My prize: VIP tickets for 2 to another show! Can't wait to head back there with my boyfriend and see how he likes it. The good? The show is actually pretty entertaining and a nice way to spend your night. The drinks are also super cheap and they had Strongbow cider (one of my favs) for $4/bottle so I was a happy camper. The bad? The cast isn't that diverse, which makes for limited diversity in jokes and material. Not just that, but with the audience contributing to the show, if you have a wack audience the show has the potential to fall flat. There were a few contributions from the crowd that were very boring when I was there. Luckily the teams were pretty good and did the best to roll with it. Rating the show is hard... I'd say a strong 3.5/5 stars. I wasn't falling out of my seat, but I did get in a few laughs. Again, I think it depends greatly on who the teams are competing, the theme for the night, and the audience. Nevertheless, it's an affordable show and worth checking out at least once. read more

I had a fabulous time at the Yelp event - my very first one! :) The drinks were poured strong, the theatre has a very efficient layout (no bad seats, as far as I can tell), the vibe was great, and the show was hilarious. These improv actors really know their stuff (and I should know; I trolled them with a fairly obscure theatre reference and they NAILED it - their Commedia dell'arte scene had me positively crying with laughter). If you haven't been to a show here, I highly recommend it. I had a great time, and will be back. A+! read more
