The Union Club is a historic part of Cleveland because it has been around for years. It is a private club that offers exclusivity and access to the city's best and brightest people. The mayor of Cleveland often hosts breakfast and lunch meetings or gatherings at the Union Club. Private events and weddings are held here and there is even a hotel inside for visitors to stay. I've been attending events at the Union Club for over a year now and a half now (since Sept. 2024). I attend these events through the CCWA speaker events. Many great speakers have come to the Union Club to speak on global topics. The dinner served at the private speaker events that I've attended is always delicious. Normally there is a starting dish such as a salad, then a main course such as salmon, beef, or steak along with a side, and the meal ends with a dessert. The building is old but it has been well kept over the years. It does get cold inside sometimes so perhaps the old nature of the building is an issue with heating but I am not 100% sure. The chandeliers in some of the rooms are beautiful with intricate details. The great reading room is quiet and serene with plenty of comfortable seating. Came here for for a board meeting in 2013 for the Cleveland Orchestra as well as for a wine tasting with the Emerging Leaders Club and Column and Stripe, the Young Professionals group at the Cleveland Museum of Art. The staff are always very welcoming and the architecture and atmosphere is beautiful. At the Wine Tasting Event, we had a private room all to ourselves and was great. Will be back for an Art Tour on 10/27/22. read more

I'm not quite sure how to rate a private club. The Union Club is one of those old-line business clubs. You couldn't afford to build this facility now -- huge public rooms, loads of marble, fresh flowers, elevators that were installed when elevators had human operators, staff waiting to tend to your every need. In October I stayed at the Union Club (I might have been the only guest), ate dinner there and then again breakfast the following morning. And I spoke there in an event in one of the private rooms. Meeting venue. As an event venue, the Union Club was great. The sound and A/V worked perfectly. The staff brought in extra chairs for the larger-than-expected crowd. (I spoke about Cuba.) Restaurants. After the program eight of us ate at the restaurant. To my surprise, the food was excellent. Breakfast the next morning was in a different room. Huge. Loads of windows. Lots of well dressed, high powered executives (male and female, black and white, 30s to seniors) actually talking business over breakfast. Copies of the WSJ. Brisk, polite service with the standard breakfast fare served on beautiful china. Sleeping facilities. The room I was in was huge but needed to be remodeled. The desk chair needed to be reupholstered, the wallpaper was curling at the seems, the bathroom looked like it had been renovated in the last decade. Bottom line: a three star hotel would have been less convenient but more comfortable. Having said all of that, the Union Club was interesting. Obviously it was where the city elite met back when Cleveland was an industrial powerhouse. It must have been a huge challenge for the Club to evolve as the city evolved. That they are still in business is a tribute to the Club's manager and board of directors -- and to mortgage that must have been paid off half a century ago. read more

Someday my husband and I'll hopefully be members at The Union Club - but, for now, I am extremely thankful that my father in-law is. I've had the pleasure of celebrating a wedding, attending cooking classes, partaking in scotch, wine, and Belgian beer tastings, as well as mingling at several professional networking events at this beautifully historic venue. All of which were superb - exquisite, really. There is simply no other place in Cleveland like The Union Club (fun fact: five of Ohio's US Presidents have been members). It's almost like you're transported to another era - surrounded by ornate oil paintings, prestigious staircases, brilliant chandeliers, and distinguished wood paneling. This illustrious atmosphere is somehow not imposing - in fact, it's quite warm and welcoming. A feature undoubtedly accented by and credited to their hospitable staff, who my husband and I have grown increasingly fond of throughout the years. Classy and unpretentious. I fall pretty firmly on the "pro" side when it comes to an opinion of the Union Club. It is indeed a bastion of Cleveland's long-departed halcyon days of over a century ago, when steel and iron ore brought men and money to the area. That's what makes it awesome! You should come here to gaze up at the 20-foot ceilings, corinthian columns, and gigantic oil paintings; to enjoy the plush leather furniture, fresh linen napkins, and delicious (and moderately priced) food; and to revel - even if just for an hour or two - how the other half lives. You can't come in here without a member anyway, unless you're part of a wedding reception or some other event guest list. Either way, you're associated with the bourgeoisie in some way, so embrace it. Eat and drink well. Network. Be comfortable. I will definitely be back. read more

The Union Club is hands down the premier formal event venue in Cleveland. There is a reason why the club has such an esteem associated with it. The club is gorgeous and regal, the staff is amazing and the staff to guest ratio is top, the food is spectacular, and the peace of mind for knowing you got the best possible is priceless. We had our wedding here and could not be happier. From the start Nancy and her staff treated us like VIPs. Every step of the way through to the end of the night they were there for us. Every piece of food (apps and entrees) we tried were so good it was actually tough to choose what we wanted to serve. On the actual night and far after the guests raves about the food. The venue itself is the definition of classy and was gorgeous. You pay for what you get and we got exactly what we wanted. The perfect venue for an elegant wedding. I absolutely loved my reception, thanks to Nancy and her team! The staff is so accomodating and takes great care of even the smallest detail. The food was absolutely delicious. (We had filet mignon and sea bass for dinner... I still think about how good it tasted from time to time!) The entire clubhouse, from the cocktail lounges to the reading room and the ballroom, are beautifully appointed. All we brought in were a few uplights and some rose centerpieces. (We went for a simpler look; previous weddings had more design elements and they looked amazing also. You can see many different styles by googling the venue; prior wedding photos should come right up.) My family and I still reminisce about that beautiful evening and will cherish this wonderful memory for years to come. read more

Disappointed. Great reputation, but I found the food to be disappointing. Very bland and under seasoned. I had the pork chop with apple chutney. It was like applesauce on a bland chop. The French onion soup was barely warm and tasted lousy. The salad was nothing special. The salmon was over cooked. The Apple pie ala mode was nothing but a Costco pastry on one side of the plate and a small scoop of ice cream on the other. The wait between courses was excruciatingly long. The Union Club exceed our expectations and was a wonderful venue for my son and daughter in law's wedding this past weekend. The food was outstanding (sea bass, filet, and risotto) and the bartenders and staff were so professional and helpful. Guests raved about the beautiful venue and it has such a wonderful flow from the cocktail hour to the dinner hour. The room had great acoustics and was so stately. Such a classy place. Nancy the event coordinator did an amazing job and was helpful and available from the day they booked the venue through the night of the wedding. Our daughter and fiance chose this venue and it was fabulous!! Nancy the event coordinator did an outstanding job from the start of the planning process, the tasting and the day of the wedding. She is an absolute professional. The rooms looked gorgeous and the food was excellent. The service was wonderful and everything moved along as scheduled. It was a perfect wedding weekend in playhouse square area! Our guests enjoyed the area and took advantage of venues like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Fabulous Food show and the Fifth street Arcades as well as Lolly the Trolley that we contracted to take people on a tour. If you want a magical wedding then the Union Club is the best venue in the city of Cleveland to host your perfect day. My husband and I cannot say enough positive things about this venue and wish we could do it all over again. Nancy, the wedding coordinator, is a joy to work with. She is easy going, patient, friendly, and answered my millions of questions. A true delight to work with. The Union Club is gorgeous inside with three rooms to host your cocktail hour and a ballroom to dance the night away. I mean who would not want a dance floor that lights up and sparkles as you dance your first dance (the only one in Cleveland). Our guests ranted and raved about the beauty of the venue and how amazing the food was. One guest commented on how the Mahi Mahi melted in their mouth and the beef wellington was the hit appetizer. We even heard from our guests how friendly and attentive all the staff was at the Union Club. From the valet attendants to the front desk staff to the wait staff, everyone treated our guests as though they were the bride and groom. My husband's family stayed in some of the guest rooms at the Club and loved the feel and close proximity to the ballroom (especially those with kids). They even provided a continental breakfast. The Union Club also provides you with a perfect setting for pictures. Why go anywhere else, when the club has a staircase to die for, a vintage feel, and many hidden treasures to take fun shots with (i.e. couches, telephone booth, a piano, bar, etc.) When Sunday rolled around and I looked around the Union Club, tears came to my eye because I did not want the wedding to be over. I selected the Union Club as my wedding reception venue because it represented every facet of a formal classic wedding. From the rich mahogany wood to the timeless crown molding, I knew the Union Club would be the perfect reception venue for a formal dinner and dancing. Working with the staff at the Union Club was a treat itself! Nancy Z, event coordinator, is caring, organized and supportive among other amazing qualities! She truly made us feel at home from the first time we walked through the doors. At the Union Club everything is done in-house- food, linens, glassware, chairs etc, they provide it all! I'd have to say the most fun part of our wedding planning process was the night our families had the food tasting. Nancy and beverage manager Linda were so fun we ended up staying an extra hour laughing and having more wine. At the end of the planning process we felt as though Nancy was part of our family. The day of the wedding the Union Club provided excellent accommodations for the bridal party to get ready, catered snacks/drinks for the in-between time, and had the entire room set up the night before! Union Club serving staff were so attentive. The bridal party's drinks were always filled and a designated staff member took care of our table the whole night! Since we did a receiving line my parents were unable to have any appetizers, so the serving staff saved a plate for them and had it at their table when they sat down. Every detail was so unique and pleasant that the night was truly a dream. I felt pampered and so did our guests.
