I have used dentists and doctors for 30yrs across the country. My teeth look better than ever and I feel so much more confident in my life. The team at Union Square Dental are the most caring and professional staff I have come across. They told me my insurance would cover a full cleaning. That ended up not being the case and I owed about $80 out of pocket. Instead of collecting from me, they sent it to a collection agency, which effectively lowered my credit score by 140 points!!! The woman I saw was not very good. Her cleaning was minimal. I would not recommend this dentist at all. There are much better ones that run an honest business in San Francisco and provide better service and care. read more

I never minded going to the dentist, but I was always cautious because I had bad experiences in the past. Coming here I was nervous, which I always am going into any new health care facility. That feeling was gone the moment I walked in the door. From the front desk to both doctors, you will never find another office that treats you better. They go above and beyond for their patients. My teeth cleaning was excellent and from there I inquired about possible Veneers on my front two teeth due to thinning. In the past, this has been offered to me, but it was the only option given and for some reason something was holding me back. These doctors gave me this as an option as well, but also gave me quite a few other options that were more and less invasive. Never have I ever in my adult life been given OPTIONS for my dental care! They let me feel in control of my health and my smile. I was never told I had to do something one certain way like every single doctor in the past. This office is incredible. If you are searching for the best dental practice in SF, look no further because I have been to a few already and have been they guinea pig per say for you. That's roughly 15 years of knowing both Hakim sisters as well as their staff, including the wonderfully kind and supportive Nicole. In that time, I've had two rounds of orthodontia, countless cleanings, and check-ins, all without any complaints. Especially in these times where communication, cleanliness and safety are top priorities, I have never doubted that I was getting the best care I could receive. I found Union Square Dental Practice through a LivingSocial deal offering $75 for two dental exams, 2 cleanings and an X-ray. Great deal right? Definitely! So I, like multitudes of other people purchased the deal, and not surprisingly, it sold out in only a few days. I excitedly scheduled my next visit and was able to get one 2 weeks later. The office environment was clean, modern and bright, and the receptionist was very friendly. The dentist was also extremely friendly and offered a detailed and amazing cleaning. HOWEVER. After a thorough cleaning, the dentist told me she'd run some sort of a "cavity-finding" instrument over my teeth to see if I had any cavities. If it beeped, she said, that meant that I had cavities. So there it goes, running through my mouth, and UH OH. Beep beep boop! over an astounding 7 of my teeth. Seriously? 7 cavities? And I'd been brushing religiously for years. She also told me that I had a cracked filling that needed to be fixed, which wasn't true - another dentist told me later that it wasn't a cracked filling, just two separate fillings on the same tooth. She told me that in order to make sure the cavities didn't reach the dentine level that I'd have to have them all filled as soon as possible. Without discussing payment options or asking me what I thought, she quickly scheduled me for 3 major filling appointments, novocaine and all. Despite knowing that I didn't have insurance, she gave me an estimate that came out to a whopping $2100 for the fillings. I told them about my financial concerns regarding the cavities and she immediately signed me up for a payment plan. Seemed like she was eager to get that money! I was suspicious so I got another estimate from another dentist for fillings, and the total came to $800 less. I went into this dentist's office for a 2nd opinion (he was extremely highly rated on Yelp by many people) and he told me that not only did I not have 7 cavities, the "cavities" she found were just brown stains. He told me that my x-rays showed no real cavities and that I should just come back in 6 months for another x-ray to check for cavities. Seriously? Talk about trying to rip me for all I've got! I will say that she gave an amazing cleaning and was very attentive to my sensitive teeth, so don't worry about going in for that, but be highly suspicious if she says you have cavities or need any major dental work! I've got a feeling that she wants to make as much money as possible as quickly as possible, and is willing to scam you for it. read more

UNION SQUARE'S BEST KEPT SECRET found in Ste 1326!! I feel like a million bucks every time I leave that office. Cheesy, but the TRUTH! Dr Hakim and her staff are honest, professional, and genuinely care about your well being. DENTAL WORK: During my first visit I had a long discussion with the Dr about my "rabbit teeth." The coolest part was when she took photos of my overbite and cavities to show me where the problem was. My previous dentist would just tell me I had four cavities without explaining where or how severe they were. Now, I keep these photos next to my bathroom mirror to remind me to brush. As a health care professional myself I know what good bedside manner is and she was so gentle and patient during my exam they could have recorded her on a commerical!! Fast forward to one year later-- I've finished invislign and my rabbit teeth are gone. I never cry-- not even a tear shed at both my sister's weddings but one tear of joy managed to slip out after looking in the mirror at the final results. A few weeks ago I received my engagement pictures and I cannot express how happy I am with my teeth! STAFF: I just wanted thank you all for helping me to get the invisalign and supporting me throughout the process. I remember calling the office on the 3rd day because it hurt so much. I wanted to give up but Nicole's calming voice really encouraged me to keep going. Every visit to the office the entire staff was very pleasant, professional, and extraordinary! READ THIS if you want a detailed and thorough review about this office from a long-term patient! Before I start, quickly, I should say that I use Yelp a lot and I am always extremely annoyed when I read oblivious people's reviews that are so completely out of context and are missing the point of the review. Like leaving a 2-star review for a restaurant that had a mind-blowing food, but a not-so-clean bathroom!! I just had my teeth fantastically bleached at Union Square Dental Practice and came here to reflect on the amazing experience I've had at this office for the past two years and noticed a 2-star review that didn't make sense to me. You've got to think long term. If you have brown spots (whatever you'd like to call them) they will have to be fixed, either today or in six months. I didn't use to have insurance either when I had a tooth broken, but I wouldn't blame a dentist for it. If you had a great experience, as you say you did, why the heck are you leaving a 2-star rating based merely on an estimate?! Wasn't there a ridiculously cheap offering involved in there?! Anyway, on to the actual review...I first met Dr. Hakim at a dental office in Novato about 5 years ago. Ever since my great experience with her I've been following her all the way to The City these days. The office is absolutely modern, with amazing views of The City. There's also parking available in the building right at the street level, and with the sticker they'll give you at this office, it'll be super cheap to park there. The receptionists are all very sweet and helpful too. I've never had to wait more than a minute or two to start in the many visits that I've had. Before getting started Dr. Hakim explains every little detail of what's going to happen to your teeth that day and what needs to be done in the future. Once you feel the slight pinching of needle with the local anesthetics, the rest is a super easy rid! She is very gentle and always frequently inquires about my comfort level and/or whether I need a break. She even massages my tight jaw muscles time to time after I've been keeping it open for some time!! Awesome, right? The assistants are very gentle too. You'd think a dental office visit is going to be a pain, but that has not been my experience here. You get out in a very reasonable amount of time too. There's also somehow often a sweet offering at their office too, like the one I got for whitening my teeth (75% off!!)! As far as the payments go, from the bills I receive from my insurance, it appears to me that they do the best they can to use my insurance in a way that I'd save the most. If there's anything left after that, there are always great payment plans that I've been taking advantage of for quite some time. Dr. Hakim truly blows my mind. She's a cool dentist. Didn't know that existed until today. Basically, she took my multitude of issues in stride, and walked my through the options as if she were a friend--a very, very intelligent and professional friend. I have a few pretty expensive dental things that I need done, half are cosmetic, half are more traditionally "structural". I want a decent amount of veneers for that sparkle smile, but I also need to fill in the gap from a tooth I had pulled last year. Nearly all dentists go straight for the missing tooth, and talk to you about implants in this kind of situation--even though this tooth is way in the back of my mouth. But Dr. Hakim talked to me about how to accommodate both the cosmetic and the structural needs on an affordable budget. She even showed me pictures documenting possible solutions, so it felt like shopping with a sister. Awesome bed (chair?) side manner. Oh yeah, that's the other thing--the two docs in this office are sisters. It's kind of adorable. And they still kick large buttock at their profession. Two thumbs (and bicuspids) up! read more

This review is for anyone who may have some trepidation (please read: abject terror) about walking into an office and letting someone poke around in your mouth with sharp things. So I've taken a little vacation from dentists for a few years. If I told you how long then we probably couldn't be friends. It's a long story and when it comes right down to it I have no one to blame but myself even if I want to blame really crappy bad dental experiences from my past. I was embarrassed and pretty scared when I went online and to friends to help me find someone who could help me get back on the road to good dental health. Dr. Hakim is the gentle soul I have been missing for way way WAY too long. From my first nervous phone call to my initial exam everyone in the office welcomed me and did their best to calm me down and help me to not feel like I was being judged for running from dentists in the past. Obviously I have a lot of work to catch up on from my dental sabbatical but I have a treatment plan now and I've survived my first deep cleaning in a LONG time. I really needed a kind person to help get me back on track and I think I've found her. She even hugged me after my initial exam! Seriously. She knows it's stressful and takes everything out of the equation to make it less so. Dr. Hakim is brilliant and kind and I think we are going to be friends for a long long time. If it's been a while, pick up the phone right this minute and call them! Trust me you'll be thankful when you look back on that first call. Mainly because I found these guys because of Yelp, and they've been amazing for the YEARS I've been coming here! ...and I haven't reviewed them. Shame shame shaaaaaaaame. From my first teeth cleaning and consultation years ago, everything has been exceptional. From the gentle cleaning I see them twice a year for, to the dental work I just recently did, I genuinely feel that both Dr. Hakim (two lovely sisters) have your best interest in mind in every regard. Sincerely. Having that in a dentist is truly invaluable. The staff has always been excellent too. I would say I'm particularly fond of Nicole, the receptionist, as she has become my homie. UPDATE 1/6/2014: They're simply fantastic - updated to five stars! *********** I needed to get my teeth cleaned and was short on cash - cue LivingSocial to save the day with their 2 cleanings, exam, and x-ray deal. Because I was a new patient, they emailed me some forms to fill out ahead of time, which I definitely appreciated. The day of my appointment, I saw Dr. Mahsa. She took the time to review my medical/dental history and we chatted a bit about San Francisco, the weather, my job, etc. I was surprised she took the amount of time she did to get to know me. My dental exam AND cleaning were performed by Dr. Mahsa. I don't know that I've ever been to a dental practice where the dentist, rather than a hygenist, does the cleaning. I don't know if this was special treatment for being a new patient, but I definitely appreciated the individualized care. Dr. Mahsa was very meticulous and didn't try to tell me I had cavities when I know I don't (because some dentists do!). I would give this place 5 stars, except, I have no idea what their prices are like outside of LivingSocial and don't know if I can afford to become a regular patient. Also, at times, I felt like they were trying a bit to hard to court me for new business. One of the dental assistants acutally threw her name out for me to mention in case a wrote a Yelp review. Thankfully, I don't remember her name... With all of this being said, I did enjoy my experience overall and would definitely like to return, LivingSocial voucher or not. read more

I have had more than a few issues with past practitioners doing a bridge and having to send things back and forth to the lab before the result is reasonable. The end result was something I was never satisfied with. This is the first practice that I have been to in over ten years that put patient care first. Options are clear and understandable. After a stream of scheduling issues and miscommunication with my PREVIOUS dentist, I decided it was time to make a switch...and boy, was I glad I did. I searched for a new dentist on Yelp and came across Union Square Dental Practice. I sent an email inquiry and was quickly responded to by Nicole, USDP's office manager. She was extremely responsive, super nice over the phone and quickly found me a time that would work to come in. I met with Dr. Nazanin Hakim for my initial consultation and she was very thorough. We did a complete medical history run through, discussed any previous dental issues, and then got some x-rays done. After this, Dr. Hakim performed my first cleaning herself, which I've never had a dentist handle before. This was AWESOME! I knew I was going to have some cavities since I hadn't seen a dentist for awhile, so I wasn't surprised by this news. What I was surprised by was Nicole working with me to come up with a plan of attack to get the best coverage from my insurance. She really worked her magic here and I was super grateful for it! I chose them because of my friend's recommendation. Over the years, I've done invisalign, X-ray & routine cleaning, fillings and tooth sealants. Not big procedures, but many regular visits. Many reviews have commented how professional and friendly the doctors are, which I completely agree. What I have also noticed, from often small acts, that they really care about their profession, are always looking for ways to improve, and take pride in their practice. For example, Dr Hakim once told me she searched through many vendors to get the most natural filling color imported from an EU manufacturer. Recently, I noticed that their protective shades seem to have become more comfortable, and learned that was an upgrade Dr Hakim made after her stumbling upon some better glasses elsewhere. I believe it is endeavors like these, big or small, that separate the great from the good. I love the Hakim sisters! Their office is gorgeous with each room having a view of downtown SF. The minute you enter, Tanya at the front is welcoming and very professional. My visit started with a cleaning which I normally dread, but Dr. Nazanin Hakim was gentle and warm the whole time. She talked to me about everything she was going to do, explained what instruments she was using and then ended with a polish so my teeth were as shiny as ever. I was pleasantly surprised that the dentist herself actually does the cleaning. I then met Dr. Mahsa Hakim and asked her about invisalign! Though I didn't nab the promotion in time, I ended up giving the practice a call anyway since I was looking for a new dentist. They advised me they had a special promotion for new patients, which was at a rather excellent price, so I figured...why not. It didn't hurt that their Yelp reviews were incredibly positive upon researching the practice. I am SO HAPPY I gave them a try. Excellent service. New, clean, state of the art equipment. I love coming to see Dr. Masha Hakim. Yes, I love going to the dentist, but it wasn't always like this! At other offices, I always had to deal with surly receptionists and long waits in the reception area. There is none of that at Union Square Dental Practice. Nicole, the office manager, is the paradigm of professionalism. At my previous dental office, I had a huge snafu trying to transfer my old x-rays to Union Sq Dental, but she was so understanding and organized. Plus, she was great when my dental plan was canceled by someone in HR by mistake. When that got straightened out, I got reimbursed promptly and there was no confusion. Scheduling is very easy, and the online appointment confirmations to be very convenient. The dental assistants are all very friendly and competent. Most important, Dr. Hakim has a very gentle touch. I feel that I am in very skilled hands and look forward to be under her care for a long time, since I do not want any more extractions in my life. read more

This is the best experience I've had at any dentist's office. Service, Service, Service. I'll start from the end, which is most important to you, reader, then move toward the less essential. I came in a month ago because, on top of the cleaning I needed, I had an occasional shooting pain in my jaw. Freaking out, I was prepared to hear I needed to pay top dollar; a dental surgeon once told me he couldn't see for sure, but I should go for a root canal of my back molar to nip the problem in the bud, for a mere $950. When she examined me, she couldn't see the tooth fully in the x-ray, but listened closely to my symptoms, did several tests, and asked me follow up questions that I thought were rather psychic; she was actually confirming what she had already concluded. There was a crack in my back tooth in the root, next to my filling, and here's the best part -- it probably wasn't going to get worse, and there's nothing I can do about it. She was suggesting I pay exactly zero dollars to get it fixed (but to keep an eye on it, of course)!! As a bonus, I half-jokingly asked if I could have the computer-captured x-rays emailed to me. They were emailed to me within an hour, AND mailed to my house later that week! I have them posted next to my bathroom sink, just in case I get lazy. The extra pain was due to my night-time jaw tapping, for which she recommended a mouth guard. I mentioned the store ones that I used to use but lapsed on lately, and instead of scoffing, she recommended I try it until my next checkup in 6 months first. If that didn't work, to try theirs, which costs $600. Guess why? Because the molding, the fitting, the lights, the receptionist, the education, the office, the insurance, etc. cost money, and people have to make a living, that's why. $600 to save my teeth, of which I'm already down to one set? Sounds good to me. Further, Dr. Hakim was very thorough in examining my teeth, and, for once, all my brushing paid off. No cavities! The cleaning went well, and at a casual but not leisurely pace. I was not mocked when I asked for a reusable cup to drink out of and rinse; they get how screwed up it is to have to use paper and/or plastic all the time, and offered me a mug. Before I even got in the chair, the conversation was polite at first, then actively engaging. As I told her about my career, she asked to see my website, and we further engaged in discussion topics about which we were mutually-interested. Cool. I've actually had about 75% of my life's dentistry experience go very well, but this place tops it. I discovered this dental practice with the help of a Livingsocial coupon. I needed my teeth cleaned and despite my roommate and many others trying to talk me out of buying it, I did. Everyone seemed to think that buying a voucher for a dental practice was "shady" but it was only 75 bucks, so I did it...and man am I so glad I did!! Dr Hakim and her staff are an absolute delight! Everyone has a positive attitude and genuinely cares about your comfort. They have top notch state of the art equiptment that makes getting ex-rays seem like the snap of a digital camera (instant results!) They are detail oriented and with every test or tool they use they explain to you what they're doing and what they're looking for. The best part about the whole experience is that at the end the Dr. sat down with me to explain to me the health of my teeth, gums, and jaw. My whole life I've been pro-active about an every 6 month dental appointment. My whole life I've had pleasant experiences at the dentist. But looking back on my experiences, I have only ever interacted with the dental assistant with an exception of when the Dr. came in to poke at my teeth and talk to the assistant in "dental language" that I could never understand. If it was possible to provide more than 5 stars, I would do it in a NY minute! I called Doctor Mahsa Hakim based on her recommendations here on Yelp as a great Cosmetic Dentist due to the chipping of some bonding I had on a front tooth. Without hesitation and providing a sense of urgency, her Assistant Nicole was able to get me in the very next day. When I arrived, I could tell the office was busy with clients but they immediately acknowledged me, provided an INCREDIBLY warm and friendly welcome and was able to have me seen almost immediately. I would point out that I showed up 30 minutes early. Most dental offices in general, do not take kindly to that. From the moment I met Doctor Hakim, she was incredibly pleasant, listened intently, showed a sense of urgency, examined me and discussed my options. Doctor Hakim was gentle, VERY thorough, expressed a genuine concern for my well being and made me feel valued as a patient. The bottom line is that finding a Dentist with all these qualities is like finding a great mechanic. You simply never want to go anywhere else. I found this place via a Living Social deal, and normally I am dissatisfied with these group buying coupons, but this place has been the exception. Every time I have been there, the Doctors personally clean my teeth -- not their assistants or the hygienists. They take a good 45 mins to examine my teeth and gums, give me pointers (and positive reinforcement for being such a consistent flosser!), and only when every tooth and gum is properly cleaned do they politely hand me over to a hygienist to polish my teeth. I feel like I'm in really good hands and enjoy my dentist appointments. Even though there are coupons for cheaper exams and cleaning elsewhere, I'd much rather drive over the bridge, pay for toll and parking, because I am in excellent hands at Union Square Dental! read more

This is my first Yelp review. I don't normally have the patience for writing my thoughts down, but Union Square Dental amazed me enough with some superior service that I was inspired to do so. First of all, I was able to get an appointment slot in the same week at my preferred time of day. That's rare. I've called other places nearby that only had appointments 2 months in advance. I know this probably won't last, but it was a nice start for me. When I showed up 10 minutes late for my appointment (...what an a-hole I am), and apologized profusely, the front desk girls were actually nice. They smiled and we made chit-chat for a couple minutes before the doctor took me away. Dr. Nazanin Hakim was incredibly polite, friendly and made me feel at home in her office. We went over my X-rays together and she pointed out all my areas for concern. I was happy that she didn't push for me to have extra work done, even though I could have been sold on getting a few fillings and replacement fillings done. I did decide to have one bad filling re-finished along with my normal cleaning appointment. When the time came to do my cleaning, the hygienist was busy for some reason and instead of having me wait 10 minutes, Dr. Hakim did the cleaning herself! It was great to experience that level of service. Both the cleaning and filling replacement was pain free and quick. A few days later Dr. Hakim called me to check if my filling replacement was comfortable and that my bite felt aligned. It did. I thanked her. 5 stars! read more

Is it weird to love your dentist? Well, I do. I'd thought about getting Invisalign for years, but never quite felt right. Then I found Dr. Hakim. She instantly made me comfortable with the idea and suddenly I was in. Now it's been 2 years since the process started and my teeth are perfect. The entire Union Square Dental team made the process easy and honestly make going to the dentist a pleasant experience. After 3 visits to Union Square Dental, I'm confident in my 5-star review. I had been a slacker on my dental care for a few years and came in with some gum problems. Instead of recommending the expensive and uncomfortable root scaling procedure, Dr. Masha Hakim suggested we give it a try with regular cleanings and more frequent visits. After my 3rd visit, it looks like this is working, saving me a bunch of money, time and pain. I really appreciate that she looked to solve the problem with a less invasive treatment plan. Dr. Hakim is very warm and friendly, and their staff is professional. I've never had to wait long to get started, and everything has been handled as well as I could have hoped. This is a great dental practice. You should use them. read more
