I've seen Dr. de Francesco for three years since I've moved to SF. Dr. Berd did some minor work for me as well and it was a painless and anxiety-free experience. Both are consummate professionals! I like the office overall - it's very clean, modern, and appointments are quick. The front desk are happy to help and I never feel like I'm being upsold. I do wish you would be able to choose your hygienist though because I felt passed around to different hygienists at every check up. Some were better than others, but I do like Vy Vy. Let's keep this real! The dentist for most is not first place you wake up thrilled to ho running to. Especially not me! I haven't been to a dentist in over 20 years!!! They freak me the 'F' out! Everything! In my case I suggested they have a mobile blood bank parked outside! Nevertheless things have to happen. I don't my freakin teeth to fall out my head, so go! Moooommy! So! With all that has been said and expressed, not a deal for some of us. Along with self conscience feelings that when you open your mouth they will be like WTF?! We are done here. Damn! Mixed experience - I really liked the modern technology and the fact that I could get a crown done in one visit - other offices require 2 visits for a crown. Staff was friendly and helpful in answering all my questions. My actual experience of getting the crown put in was more painful than my old dentist - Dr Berd was a bit rough during the procedure when trying to pull the sides of my mouth, so the skin around my mouth just outside my lip broke and bled and scabbed over. Dr Berd also injected me several times in the middle of the procedure with more numbing and didn't give any warning beforehand so I was rather startled and unprepared when feeling the sharp poke of the needle. My cheek is still swollen from numbing two days later after the procedure. I did not experience this kind of lingering pain from past crowns so I'm a bit wary. read more

She was very friendly and did everything with so much detail . Thank you for the amazing cleaning I have ever had . Update: Dr. Helen De Francesco called me the next day to apologize and to remedy the situation. They also rescinded the cancellation fee so I would not be charged for the appointment. While I still won't be returning as a patient, it was big of them to call directly and make amends. --------- Original post: I've gone to The Dentist Group a couple of times for regular cleanings. They've suggested getting a deep cleaning that they offer and I said I'd like to see what my insurance would cover before committing. 2 months later I received a quote for my treatment plan that was $62. Great - I went back for another cleaning and then booked the deep cleaning. 24 hours before my appointment they send me a new treatment plan with a quote of $260. I called to see what happened and they said that the original quote did not include everything. I told them I no longer wanted the procedure based on the price and to please cancel. Because it was 24 hours before my appointment - they charged me $75. This very much feels unprofessional to me and had they just sent me that quote before that 24 hour mark, I could avoided their cancellation fee - but I bet they probably do that on purpose/often. read more

The two experiences I've had here were excellent. I'd say it's the best dental preventive work I've ever had. Extremely thorough but gentle & almost completely painless. I've been coming here for 2 years now and I'm very happy with the services and the team. I had some filling done this year by Dr. Berd and am happy with the result, it looks very natural. The whole team is very friendly and I feel very well taken care of. Huge shout out to the front desk (I forgot her name) and Elise (my awesome hygienist!) for always doing such a wonderful job and my teeth and gum have been in a much healthier shape than they were prior coming here. Elise always got Netflix and had Friends ready for me so nothing negative to say about her at all! I highly recommend Dr. Berd and Elise. I honestly used to hate seeing the dentist and hygienist because they were rough on my teeth and gum but this team completely changed my attitude. I also loved getting the laser gum therapy after each cleaning. I would definitely recommend everyone to go for it if it's in your budget because it costs extra, but so worth it. Dr. Berd is nice and competent. The space is beautiful, and the equipment is new. The office staff are disorganized. When I worked nearby, I was never able to get anyone on the phone when I needed to reschedule an appointment. (They would call me back a few hours later when they had time - for a busy professional in meetings all day, that didn't work). I had to physically walk into the office to get someone to talk to me. Annoying, but not impossible to deal with when I was a few blocks away. I cancelled my last appointment weeks ago. I'm not even going to the grocery store, why would I go to the dentist when it's not urgent? This past week, I got a VM saying that my appointment was at X time, and I would be charged if I didn't show up. (I couldn't pick up at the exact moment their office called me, and didn't listen to the message until later). Today, I received an invoice for $75. Well, I'm not paying the $75, so I guess I'm looking for a new dentist. Many offices use modern scheduling tools. I'll be looking for one that does. read more

Great for normal teeth cleaning, but otherwise unprofessional service for something more complicated than that. Be cautious when you're considering an appointment. Back in August 2019, I requested an appointment with Dr. Francesco for a wisdom teeth consultation. When I was making my appointment, I made it clear that I had a teeth cleaning less than six months prior and would not be needing another one. I had x-rays from my previous dentist visit that I offered to share with the office ahead of time, but the secretary said that they would take new ones in case my teeth had shifted. When I showed up to my appointment, I was treated by an assistant and Dr. Berd instead. The assistant told me she wanted to clean my mouth up, and I assumed that it would just be a simple rinse so that my teeth would be easier for Dr. Berd to examine. It turned out to be a full 30-minute teeth cleaning. When Dr. Berd came in to give me the "consultation", he spent a few seconds looking at my x-rays, and then a few minutes explaining to me how he doesn't have enough expertise to determine whether I should get my wisdom teeth removed, and then gave me a referral to an oral surgeon. The entire appointment, from entrance to exit, took close to 45 minutes. A complete waste of time. Now in January 2020, I was notified of an invoice and a remaining balance of $8.20 that I have to pay. I was charged for "Prophylaxis", which is teeth cleaning (a service I did not ask for), and a "Periodic Oral Evaluation", which lasted at most 5 minutes and consisted entirely of Dr. Berd telling me he didn't know what to do. $8.20 is not a crazy amount, but the fact that they are shoving this bill in my face feels like a kick to the gut. I feel cheated, and I wonder if this office just wanted to take my insurance money for the cleaning, prioritizing their bottom-line profit over their ability to serve your customers. I am upset with the lack of communication and complete disrespect for your customers' time. The lessons I've learned personally are: 1. ensure that both parties understand the exact services requested at the time of appointment 2. request for an itemized estimation of service costs ahead of time I will not be returning to this office. There are plenty of other practices that put patients first, not profits. read more

I've been going to the Dr Berd for a few years now but In 2021 there was some issues with their billing dept and my insurance all unbeknownst to me. Than I was told I couldn't be seen because the insurance company (who is a top tier & A+ rated company) was in need of some paperwork. The dental office asked me to send over the paperwork which I did and I CC'd the dental office, after not hearing back from the dental office I called back some months later only to be told, I'm sorry yes we see it and received a payment but it's want in full. I asked why no one informed me? Again the apologized and said they will reach out to the insurance company and get back to me. This pattern happened for 2 years!!! Me calling them, me helping their billing dept and then them not responded to me until I call again. Today I was told the same BS they heard from my insurance and are waiting for a response and NO I cannot be seen! It's a nice facility but I've encountered multiple issues with overbilling. That's why when I had a recent procedure done, I requested the invoice prior. The invoice states $0 and I was encouraged to proceed, so I was surprised when they sent me a bill for almost $1200. I contested, but they wouldn't honor their invoice. Hard lesson that you can't trust their office at all, and it's disheartening that they pulled this during a pandemic when times at hard. Frankly, their office feels predatory. Pretty good practice: offfices are very clean and staff and dentist warm. There's even a therapy puppy! And you can watch Netflix when getting cleaning. The visit started late today - ok but no apology and very stiff wording re if patients are late. Downsides: it's very much a commercial practice with lots of upsell even charging for flavored floss. Many medical groups think selling product is unethical. Ditto on laser treatment. Google Atlantic article on how many dental add ins are not supported by evidence I asked why I should get X-rays since flawless teeth and told it much show bone loss. O-kay so I asked about getting again, and they suggested again - even though bone loss in six months pretty unlikely. It's understandable since the X-rays are digital so all profit. Best dentist I've ever been a patient of. I lived in SF for 10 years, and found Dr. Berd and his team during the last ~3 years of being in SF. The team is extremely thorough during each visit, whether it's a procedure or a routine check-up. I compare going to The Dentist Group to a spa visit -- the team pays so much attention to the health of your teeth. The office is beautiful and immaculately clean, as well. Most importantly, Dr. Berd and his team are honest. I went to a dentist in South Bay previously who told me I needed all types of work done. Dr. Berd gave me an alternative and never tried to up-sell me into procedures I didn't need. I highly recommend this group to anyone looking for great dental care. read more

I've been a regular patient here for a few years now. I love this dentist. The office is really beautiful and chic. They have a really friendly office dog who is usually sleeping somewhere and/or walking around looking for pats. All the staff are friendly, courteous and good at what they do. The equipment is all new and top of line. And the dentists are really talented and work quickly. Which is important because I hate the dentist and want the experience to be over the moment I step into a dentist office. On top of this, they work really well with my insurance and on occasion give me really nice floss to take home. read more

This place was great! I had went to a different dentist that tried to corner me into paying $800 for unnecessary treatments. (I was pregnant at the time and a lot of times your hormones are so out of whack and it can affect your dental health which was why the other dentist recommended I get so many treatments). I waited for a few months and went to this dentist after I had my baby and they said that my teeth looked healthy and that they just would need to do a routine cleaning. I also didn't have to wait long for my appointment and was able to schedule it as a new patient about a week in advance. read more

I've now had 3 dentist appointments after seeing Josh Berd (to verify that his practice was the concern, not my expectations). My visit was in late 2019, but I've waited to post this review to make sure it was fair. Bottom line: My experience with The Dentist Group was bad, and I certainly would not recommend this dental practice to any of my friends or colleagues. The good things about the practice: Solid hygienist, convenient location off of Market Street, modern tech-enabled office and a super cute office dog. However, that didn't make up for the things that actually matter to me in a credible dentist. Primarily, I found this guy to be rude, aloof and condescending. He didn't want to engage on questions about my own oral health (e.g., "are there downsides to using fluoride as much as we do in the US?") and generally had a self-important chairside manner. Beyond the "soft skills", he pretended to find cavities that actually don't seem to exist -- likely just to bill a new patient, since the ADA is so lousy at regulating fraudulent dentists. I had a great dentist who I had seen regularly before moving to SF, who hadn't found a cavity in 10 years. After Josh acted all concerned about my mouth, I have gone and found 3 other opinions, all of whom said that at best the areas he wanted to fill were mild coffee stains. This really pissed me off, because dentists should be healthcare providers not bottom-line maximizers. The office also insisted on doing their own x-rays (even though I had digital copies sent from within the year, and explained that I had a lot of recent exposure after an appendicitis-scare) and refused to do another cleaning without also billing me for a dentist exam (even though I had been there less than 12 months before, and we had a pandemic in-between). There was an attempt at upselling at every turn. My impression is that they are focused on the $$$ - and trying to gloss bad practices with conveniences. Perhaps, Berd is just more conservative or would rather just focus on the cosmetic work. I hope I'm wrong about this practice and that they are more ethical, but there are many better places to try in San Francisco - I won't waste my premium insurance payments here, again. read more

I mean, Dr. Berd is a professional dentist, but I agree with another reviewer about Dr. Berd's bad bedside manner towards those who don't have perfect teeth. Kristine is a very professional hygienist and pays attention. To be frank, she is the best hygienist I have ever seen. My gum recession became worse because of the Invisalign, so some teeth were really sensitive. Kristine is very patient and cleanses those sensitive teeth carefully. And my teeth were super clean every time. Kristine also has a lot of knowledge about gum care and flossing. read more

One word to describe this dentist: sleazy I came here as a new resident of the city after seeing a dentist every 4-6 months in Boston where I used to live. I have only been diagnosed with one cavity in my life and it was around 5 years ago. I arrived to the office and had to wait 20 minutes after my appointment time to even be seen by anyone. Not a promising start. They lure you in with bells and whistles like Netflix and a fancy website but they didn't even have the show on Netflix that I requested on my intake form so it's just a cheap marketing ploy. Dr. Berd came by and examined my teeth. I noticed it was odd that he immediately seemed annoyed in his temperament and a few times he snapped at his dental assistant for typing numbers incorrectly into the computer. I think how a manager treats people that report to them says a lot about someone. Finally he showed me some pictures of my teeth and said I have 4 cavities. 4 cavities! He said we should fill all of these teeth. He also suggested a laser treatment, fluoride treatment and deep cleaning. Allow me to translate: GIMME ALL DA MONEYYYYYY. When I questioned him on why my previous dentists hadn't noticed any cavities in the last 6 years and how he could diagnose cavities without even probing my teeth, he said "They're wrong. You have cavities." Interesting. Well, I knew something was fishy when he claimed I had 4 cavities just from looking at pictures (without actually probing my teeth with the tool) so I said I'm going to get a second opinion elsewhere. I could tell he didn't like being questioned so he rushed through my cleaning after that. They didn't even floss my teeth for the cleaning. Weird. Maybe they rush the cleanings so they can diagnose you with more cavities later. I just came back from a different dentist in the city for my second opinion and shocker: she said I have no cavities. She said the teeth this dentist labeled as cavities are just slightly stained but when she actually probed the teeth, she said they are sturdy with no cavity issues. What a concept, a dentist who uses a dental probe to check cavities and doesn't just look at photos. It was good to find a dentist who actually puts patients first and isn't just out to make money. On top of that, this office sent me my x rays only after several follow ups and the new dentist said they are basically unusable so I have to get new ones in my next appointment. My takeaway: a dentist who tries to lure you in with a fancy website and bells and whistles often times is just in it for the $ and doesn't care about patient health.
