Quite a pleasant surprise finding a decent winery in NJ. Coming from Napa/Sonoma area I had never truly appreciated wines in the Jersey / NY area, but the dry rose we tried today was delightful. Maybe it's because it's made with my favorite cab franc grapes and was quite dry - perfect on a hot day. Service was friendly, plenty of seating around the barn outdoors and several areas inside first and second floors. Came here for a July 4th event and it seemed very popular amongst locals. read more

Went on a frigid Saturday afternoon. Enjoyed some wine tastings. The staff was busy but were able to provide intimate experience nonetheless. Live music was happening, people were milling about. 2/24/24 Visit: Really enjoyed the rich quality of their wines. Very happy that NJ has an excellent winery. The staff was very welcoming. The rustic beautiful winery interior reminded me of a high end rustic California wine room. The entire tasting room was spotless. At the wine bar, we sat overlooking wine vats. During our guided tasting, the General Manager John gave everyone a lesson on how to detect the age of a vine. Patty was our delightful wine server. We shared two flights of wine (12 samples). $22 per flight. Our favorites were the Silver Lining Cabernet Franc and Estate Blush. Afterwards, we shared a tasty cheeseboard. Yelp Perk- a 10% off a glass of wine. Towards the end of our visit, we were asked to scan a QR code with an indirect question, that could be leaning towards political affiliation. No, I'm not kidding about it. This doesn't fly with me. Of course, we didn't answer the question. Other than this issue, we really enjoyed the winery. read more

Cute outdoor spot - celebrated a friend's birthday, we were total of 15 people. We had a table reserved inside. It was on the lower level and was so dark and freezing with NO windows. It was in between the wine tanks / fermenters with cute lights but extremely secluded with no music. Outside was much warmer in the sun and there was a massive tent. Apparently that area is first come first serve AND you are welcomed to bring food whereas inside you are NOT allowed to bring food. Which I think they should get rid of, they said they had food/ grilled cheese truck? There was no truck, it was a dude inside with a grill and the wait was very long - we didn't bother. Upstairs had a small selection of meat/cheese and crackers/chips but very limited. From my experience at other wineries, they should amend the outside food policy. The bathroom situation is also very limited - we did end up being escorted to Farmhouse where a small bathroom under the stairs was available. Just a heads up for people! Our second stop on our visit to wineries on a beautiful February afternoon that was unseasonably warm. Parking in a gravel lot and a short walk to the tasting room up a short flight of stairs. There were others tasting at tables and at the bar. We sat at the bar and were served by Jay a retired Ad Exec working here now to pass the time. Very gregarious and knowledgeable about the wines here and wine in general. We left him a nice tip. The wines were served in proper glasses with a dump bucket nearby. We liked the Chardonnay. The rose was nothing special and the reds were ok but stupidly overpriced. We noted a few reds were made with Chambourcin and we also tried a port made from 100% Chambourcin. We do not like that grape but thought we'd try this after hearing Jay's elucidation. Apparently that grape, if harvested early, results in an off-putting bouquet and taste according to him. This was not like any Chambourcin we ever had. We learned something. We would return for a tasting when in the area. Mark & Nancy. read more

I have only ever sat indoors at the bar to do tastings and drink a bottle but There is an outdoor seating area with picnic tables. Stopped in this cute little vineyard on a whim. The scenery and surrounding areas are really beautiful with open fields. Myself and my friend went to the tasting room which was rather small. I don't know if there is any other tasting area. It had a nice homely rustic feel. We decided to taste six wines. The wines were very good. Some better than others as to be expected. It was interesting that they had a port wine which you don't typically see in jersey. I didn't get to try it though. It did get busy in the tasting room and there was only one guy doing the tastings. While he was fairly nice, he wasn't as attentive as he was to other tables. He also did not explain the wines as they were poured to us however we overheard him explain them to others that were there. The difference in treatment is enough for me to not go back. My four stars is strictly for the wines. They typically get food options from a local bistro however they didn't have them this day so we just had a cheese spread and some crackers. My advice is to eat hardy before going. read more

By far my favorite vineyard in this immediate area. Stopped by with a friend for a tasting on a Sunday afternoon. The gentleman doing our tasting was extremely knowledgeable about their own wines and wine in general. We received 10 tastings for $10 (tax included but no souvenir glass). They have a great selection of wines, including dessert wines. The gentleman doing our tasting kept changing our glasses. He taught us the proper way to hold the glass. He also let us know that they do not use detergent to clean their glasses because the residue changes the taste of the wine. He was really filled with incredibly useful information. ***3 1/2 stars*** Let me start by saying that a lot of my tepidness with Unionville is about preferences versus anything this winery did or didn't do, so keep that in mind going forward. I grew up very close to the Alba Vineyard in Finesville (I'd guess about half an hour northwest of here), and that was and remains my go-to when I'm in the area. I'm a big fan of the atmosphere and wine there, so unfairly or not, wineries in the area will always be automatically compared to it. I came here last Sunday afternoon with two of my chums (one of whom brought a coffee and basically supervised us as we discussed pop culture). They're both people I've been to wineries with before in the vicinity, so this wasn't an indoctrination for anyone. Itinerary-wise, two of us participated in a wine tasting and then each had a glass of wine and some food. The area is gorgeous. We've been to Old York nearby, and it's understandably similar; a lot of picturesque, rolling farmlands and dusty rural roads. You're either into that or not. Honestly, I'd pick Old York over Unionville in that regard because they have better viewpoints - they're overlooking the Sourland Mountain Preserve, so you can sit outside and take in more of the landscape than you can here. To be fair, we also stayed indoor since it was about 90 degrees out, but there appeared to be several picnic tables and a larger tented area outside to hang out in if the need arose. The tasting room is located upstairs in the barn loft, and they've got a very nice setup in there, with some high-top tables and a counter/bar that you can sit at for the tastings and to just drink in general (it feels almost low class to call it at a bar in a winery). For whatever reason, there weren't a lot of people there at all. I'd guess around 10 additional visitors were there throughout our two-hour visit. It may have just been fluky (and this is again where personal preference comes in) but honestly I think a few more people would have added to the atmosphere. I enjoyed the tasting for the most part. I like that you get seven choices, which is a little on the high side in my experience and allows you to sample a larger variety than at other wineries. I enjoyed most of the wines, but I wasn't blown away by any of them. The vast majority of offerings are dry, and I like a little semi-sweetness. My chum and I got a lot of the same wines and we both thought the dessert wine Cool Foxy Lady was the best. She actually grabbed a bottle for her parents as a thank you for watching their young pups during this endeavor. Constructive feedback - I actually thought the quirky, vivid descriptions of the wine were a hindrance to some extent, and after one or two samples I stopped reading them until after I'd tried them. For instance, one of them was described as tasting like a green Jolly Rancher. Well, once you have that in your noggin, you're not going to taste anything else. Massive power of suggestion. I suspect a lot of people are into the writeups and I don't dislike the creativity, but I think they almost work TOO well. Your mileage will certainly vary though. For what it's worth, my chum thought both of the reds she sampled were "awesome" (unusual for this area in her opinion) and loved the barn. We both really liked the girl who handled the tasting. She knew what she was talking about, was both casual/friendly and professional (can be a tough balance for sure) and also deftly navigated that line of being nearby to fill up the glasses almost immediately upon consumption while also not oppressively lurking. I was impressed. She also threw some mild shade at Alba when I mentioned that I was a big fan of that winery with a comment along the lines of, "Unionville chooses to focus exclusively on its wine," the unspoken part clearly a dig at the constant musical acts and food offerings that go on there. My coffee-swilling chum Maximillion Bojangles murmured, "Shots fired" under his breath. Indeed. And I admire and respect the conscious decision to do exactly that, but we did think that at the very least they needed to up the food game a little. You don't need a dramatic wood-burning pizza oven, but the cheese cubes, etc. hanging out in the nearby fridge are a little underwhelming. I don't think it would take a lot to raise the level in that regard. There's a lot to like here and I'm sure Unionville has a strong fan base. I'd come back, but I slightly prefer some of the other options in the area. read more

We came (8 of us) on a beautiful fall day. I had won a wine tasting for 8 people at a tricky tray just before COVID hit. While the certificate was technically expired due to COVID and the precautions suspending tastings for so long, they graciously honored the certificate. We packed a beautiful picnic and headed there. I made a reservation through the general manager via email but when we arrived they had no record of our reservation. The manager on that day asked us to set up outside while he figured out how to accommodate our group tasting. He came outside to us to suggest a solution to them being completely booked but us being there. He suggested that he send someone outside and do our tasting there and as I said it was a beautiful day so we agreed. Out comes Devin, a young and extremely polite and knowledgeable young man, carrying a large ice tub filled with different wines. He started our wine tasting but since we already bought a bottle, he pulled that variation from the tasting so that we could taste 7 (I think it was 7) new and different wines from their menu. Devin was extremely knowledgeable of the area, the wine and the vineyard. He was also funny, polite and had a very generous pour...lol. We frequent another winery but this may be our new "go to". They were extremely accommodating even though they didn't expect us and their set up is extremely friendly. They have a beautiful property and allow outside food to be enjoyed on the property. There are several sitting areas and when they filled up, Devin (a man of many jobs) brought out folding tables and chairs for additional seating. We had a great time, spent the entire day in the picnic area and they were great!! We will for sure go back. Great job Unionville!!! read more

I found this gem cause I wanted to go wine tasting and celebrate a friends bday. My first experience was outside.The scenary is beautiful.Both times I had the pleasure of having Rich and he is awesome. The wines are good.The blush one was my favorite. Rich remembered and even wrote my name on the bottle and said it's named after you now My girlfriends and I had a great time. When some friends of ours suggested we check out a winery last weekend, I was skeptical. Wine from New Jersey? The only kinds I've tasted have been extremely fruity and sweet, which I wasn't keen on having again, but these friends were persistent. And I'm glad they were. Even though the winery is a mere thirty minutes northeast of Princeton, it feels worlds away down tree-lined roads. (Hint: Take backroads to get there instead of 95 or 206 if you can help it, for full effect.) We went on a rainy Saturday so I didn't get a good sense of the whole place, but it's a historic property that often hosts weddings, so you can imagine how picturesque it might be. Tastings are held in the second floor of a refurbished barn. The area isn't huge, but there is enough space for a polished wood bar where you can stand and enjoy wine flights ($10 for 5, sometimes more tastings if they're generous). There are also some high top tables and a couch-y area for larger groups, which might be hard to snag on a busier day. I unfortunately didn't catch the name of our host, but he was great and super knowledgeable, sharing what was great and what would be even greater at what time of the year. At the moment (as of mid-June) there are 16 wines to pick from, a mix of blends and single varietals. I'm not a wine expert, but every one sounded equally interesting. Our friends had been to the winery a number of times and recommended some of their favorites, which we happily tried and then some. Although Unionville is known for their Chardonnays (not as heavy/buttery as Californias, apparently), their Mistral series - a white, a rose, and a red - were all delicious and very drinkable. We also really liked the Big-O, a Bordeaux blend that even I, who isn't a huge fan of super tannin-y reds, enjoyed. After the tasting, we all shared a bottle of rose over some food, enjoying a leisurely afternoon of conversation plus some views of the fermentation tanks below. The place does have a limited food selection (Di Bruno Bros. from Philly, a tasty choice), but happily enough they allow for outside food, so plan on a picnic if you have the time. When the weather's nice there are tables outside, too, and a once-daily winery tour. Unionville has now become one of my local favorite things to do, as a date night with the Tall Man or as a fun thing to do with out-of-towners. I even can't wait to bring my in-laws here -- Californians who are no stranger to Napa. We left with a couple bottles but could have easily bought more. Will be back for sure! read more

Their Chardonnay was also the highest-scoring wine from New Jersey at the "Judgment of Princeton", a wine tasting organized by the American Association of Wine Economists that compared in-state wines to premium French vintages. They Host festivals and events on the property throughout the year and have fantastic spaces for Private events, weddings and parties. This is my new favorite vineyard. It's quiet, off the beaten path and has a lovely atmosphere. This is a perfect place to spend the day bonding with your friends, family or significant other! I always go for the revolutionary red, their Cabernet. I haven't strayed from this one because it's the first wine I've had there and I love it too much to try another! What a nice afternoon! Our Sommelier Barbara walked us through 8 tastings of the fruits of this local winery's labors, All for just $10. We also did the complementary tour of the winery with such a great explanation of how the grapes are grown, processed and bottled. After experiencing such a great education on how wine is produced, I will never complain how much a bottle of wine costs because they go through such great trials and tribulations in order to produce the wine plus how many issues they have to deal with from weather to pests that eat the grapes and can damage the leaves along the way. All of the staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. It wasn't just about selling you a bottle, but the wines were great and we took two bottles home with us. I can only recommend that you purchase some cheese and crackers(which we're phenomenal) to have during your tasting just to try to stay sober. They were very reasonably priced. Our pourer was very well informed and we learned quite a bit that we were unaware of. We signed up for the private tasting under the tent. They only have 5 tables for each time slot so it's really spread out and very private with you and your pourer. The tent keeps you cool, between the fans and le mistral. We had Lisa and she was great...very warm, service-oriented and knowledgeable. New Jersey has a bad wrap for wines -- probably due to past with focus on sweet/dessert wines, but these are serious contenders. There's a Chardonnay for everyone -- light, medium, heavy. The Mistral Rose is dry and complex. Revolutionary Red is a great Tuesday wine, and the Silver Lining Cab Franc is unique (in a great way)! If you don't want to pay for a tasting, you can just buy a bottle from the tasting room and sit at one of the picnic tables with umbrellas. read more

We came today 3/16/24 .Me and my wife came a little late in the day and the place was so busy. We thought we would be turned away but the staff went out of there way to find a spot for a wine tasting. It did not disappoint. The price for was so reasonable and the wines were spectacular. Our server Janet was knowledgeable about all of the varieties and was so pleasant and welcoming to us during the busy period. A wonderful experience sitting on a scenic and beautiful property.
