I've kept a unit at Dexter Storage for ten years. I have had excellent service from the staff and…read morehave never had a problem. It is an outdoor unit, so I expect dust to blow in through the cracks under and around the door. However, my belongings are packed securely in boxes or under cloth coverings and they have remained in good condition. I recommend Dexter for safe outdoor storage.

When we went to unload it everything was covered with a thick layer of dirt, which needed to be wiped down multiple times with wet rags and dry rags. We also found that the bag with his clothes and stuff was torn open and some of the items were destroyed. We found a dead and decomposing squirrel on the ground by the mattress and box springs. Fluid from the body had gotten all over the mattress and box springs, which took an incredible amount of time to try and clean. We have the rental prepaid thru the middle of the month but moved out when we saw the state of our items. I contacted them originally and was apologized to and told they would inform the owners of this incident. Never heard anything, but got a notice that our move out was complete even though we had paid thru the 16th. I asked for at least a partial refund considering that we were giving the unit up early and the issues with the dust, the damaged items and the squirrel. Was told by Nancy at Dexter Storage that it is on a dirt road in the country and that our contract says no prorated refunds. So we paid $70 a month for a unit for 16 months and had our items coated with dirt, damaged and the mattress and box springs exposed to a dead animal carcass and the response from the company was sorry but what do you expect from a dirt road in the country. I would not do business with a storage company that cannot keep your items secure, clean, or undamaged. Would not recommend using them for the issues but also for the response to the issues.

Straight-up, no high-pressure sales, the property is very secure, but access is easy. The hours listed through Yelp are for the front business office. Gate access for existing customers remains open until 9 pm. This is not a 24 hour access facility. I have a larger, climate-controlled unit. One of the nice perks of this place is the overhead motion-detecting light system. I don't know if all inside units have that, but it's nice and not usual. It is not cheap to store belongings in secure climate control, but I think the prices here are reasonably competitive. The owner told me that if they decide to do price increases they space them about 11 months apart and the increases would be $3 or $5 at a time not $20 or $50 like I watch the other places do. Very few people these days can afford to pay for a whole year's worth of storage at a time. I see a lot of these places lure people in with nice introductory rates and promotions, to then jack the prices way up once they are all moved in. Moving is expensive. Storage is expensive. If you aren't careful you could lose everything. I did not take my decision to store my property here lightly, and like I said so far I am happy with the experience.

I finally moved out today, after years of them raising my rates to absolutely astronomical prices,…read moreand I can't recall when I was that relieved to leave a place behind. My last review was in March of this past year and, nearly a year later, the gate is still wide open. I drive by regularly and every time I made a note of when it's open. 95% of the time. Again, what security are we all paying for???? I'm getting angry again just thinking about it. Now that my stuff is gone and I'm not worried about them retaliating, I plan on reviewing the paperwork on the contract and see if there's a clause re: security in there because if so, every resident of this location is overpaying by hundreds for something that wasn't being delivered. It makes me sick when I think about how much money I gave this hellhole. Oh and also, my credit card expired in December so I missed one month payment while I waited for the new one and they threatened to auction it off. It wasn't even a full month behind. Which seemed a bit premature given the time and time of year (holidays when people likely travel and may not be as easy to reach). The only positive I can say is at least with the gate broken I could easily come and go as I cleaned out the unit. But then again, had I been someone with nefarious intentions that could also have made it easy for them, too. If you're considering this location or they're offering you a sweet deal to sign up, RUN AWAY.

I would strongly caution against using this company. I hired them to remove a fold-out couch from…read moremy third floor. When they arrived I told them I wasn't sure if the couch would need to be disassembled or the doors taken off their hinges in order to get the couch down the stairs. They assured me that they were professionals and knew how to handle it. Two hours later they had managed to get the couch out of the house after knocking three large holes in the plaster on the staircase. When I told them I didn't want to pay until the plaster was repaired, the movers were instructed to sit in front of my house in their truck until I paid them. I figured that my issue was with the management, so I paid the movers after speaking with a manager who assured me that everything would be taken care of. Long story short: it wasn't taken care of. When I finally spoke to an upper-level manager -- some two weeks later -- he immediately behaved as if I were trying to scam him -- claiming that I had had construction done since the couch was delivered which made it impossible to remove and that I was attempting to get him to re-plaster my entire house. When I said I just wanted him to repair the plaster they had damaged, he said his liability only covered 60 cents per pound of the object being moved so he would only be able to pay about $150 (Not sure where that figure came from.) and that it was my job to find a person to repair the plaster. (This was after the lower-level manager assured me that they had a person who could do the work.) I'm fine with people making mistakes, but in business and life people who don't acknowledge their mistakes or work to make them right are not worth dealing with. This company seems to operate well as long as everything goes smoothly. As soon as you have a justifiable complaint -- that, for instance, your property has been damaged -- you will be treated with aggression, condescension and contempt. Other reviews here echo that same sentiment and are worth paying attention to. This situation is very simple: I paid the full bill to have couch removed. I have not been compensated for any of the damage done to the plaster on my staircase. Anything else is noise. Let the buyer beware.

I was originally quoted for $180 (high enough) but, it ended up being like $220 with fees and prorating.. ridiculous! BEcause, I booked it on Thursday, luckily not Wednesday like initially intended (needed it for Friday) but, they had to start charging from time of booking which doesn't help me any and cost an extra $8/day. In addition, they left the damn lock on the thing so we couldn't access it until Saturday anyway and were there trying to unload on Friday night and couldn't. My family won an auction for one of their units, and when we arrived to collect my belongings, it was immediately clear that something was very wrong. The unit was completely different from what was advertised in the pictures. The high-quality items were all removed, and items that weren't in the photos were now suspiciously in the unit. There was a small and cheap lock on the door instead of the bigger and more expensive ones storage companies typically use. Additionally, the manager broke through the small lock with pliers instead of the red-colored and more powerful lock breaker that's in the original photographs. The manager tried to tell me that someone must have broken into the sealed unit without leaving any trace -- I find that ridiculous. What is important to note is that there was no sign of forced entry. My lock appeared untouched. Upon inspection I realized that the frame holding the door has screws on the outside. The second issue is that I was told, when signing up for the unit that "It is state law that you must have insurance on the unit" and was charged $10 for the month that I was renting it. I have since found out, through contacting the Department of Insurance and Financial Services of the Michigan government, that there appears to be no law requiring that a self-storage renter MUST buy insurance.
