Last month I went into the shop in a panic afraid to drive my car. It felt like some part of the car was uneven and the wheel would fall off. I took it into University Auto Care in hopes that a local shop would be more affordable and reliable than something like Firestone. According to the mechanic my repairs for brakes, and rotors, plus shocks and struts was quoted to be $1,100. Okay that's a lot of money but it was the second shop I had been to. They finish the job and the next day the car is "ready." Cue two weeks later my car is doing the exact same thing I took it in for. Maybe worse. Which leads me to believe they never fixed what they said in the first place. Going to be taking my car back and either demanding a refund or reimbursement because clearly they didn't want to fix it. I'm very surprised that other people had troubles here. I don't know if the ownership has changed recently or what, but these guys have been by far my best auto-shop experience in Detroit in the ten years I've been driving. I used to get diagnostic work done at Firestone for thoroughness, and then take it to a cheaper place for the work itself. Now I just go to University Auto, where they do the work right, and at a very reasonable price. Where Firestone wanted $650 for a big exhaust issue, University Auto got it done properly for about $200. Since then, it's the only place I go. There is a 20% off for new customers, so give that a shot. The guy who works the front desk, Ya Ya, is a real gem who takes pride in getting you in and out and served well. I'm really sorry for the people who had a bad experience. Again, I'm really surprised. Maybe Ya Ya is what has made the difference for me. read more

Most shabby work ever, they have no idea what they are doing at all. I had to keep going in for more work on problems they insisted weren't their fault even though they caused all these problems. I spent all my money going back in and at the end of it all my car is not even driveable any more because of them. I've had to bring my car back at least 6 times since December. These guys were paid for a new motor, first time they gave me a faulty motor and now I think they rebuilt my head caskets instead of replacing It like they were suppose to. Everytime I take it back due to my motor running hot they give me another "issue" that's wrong. I've paid $800 for a new heating coil (heat still doesn't work) 1,200 for transmission etc. and car still continues to run hot. First time they ever "fixed it" the guy told me he did something with the fan and it makes a little noise but it won't hurt it. Mind you it never made noise before. Now he we are months later and he's saying I need a new fan. This was something they did and they still are trying to charge me. I went and got a second opinion from another shop and was told basically I'm being played. So because they are trying to charge me for a new fan which I already have and I'm not paying them anymore money I know have to take time out of my schedule to sue these people because they didn't do right the first time. Communication is horrible, no one in the shop is on the same page. Super pissed I went here, my car has spent more time with them than in my own driveway. ZERO CUSTOMER SERVICE!! Oh did I mention sledge was coning out of my mother and they told me just ride it a few weeks and it would go away. read more

Took them 3 days just to quote me, and I actually had to walk in there because no one ever bothered to call me. The owner said he was just about to call me in a minute. They wanted to charge me well over $500 for a repair I got elsewhere for $225. Seeing as how I live in Midtown, I really wanted to support a local business, but if they are going to just straight forward scam people, then I refuse to give them my business. I took my vehicle there, they told me I needed a mass airflow sensor, that it had to be programmed for my vehicle, the injectors would have to be cleaned, and the carbon removed from the cylinders. They quoted it at $300. I thought it sounded fishy. I called a parts store, the sensor doesn't need to be "programmed." I looked it up on YouTube. It's not even a 10 minute fix! Screw these guys! It was 2 screws. I did it myself in parts store parking lot and saved myself over $200. Don't bother with these rip off artists! read more

Terrible customer service. I had given my car to them twice, and they did not even take a look at it in seven hours! In last December, I dropped off my car in the morning to change my fuel filter. They said they will call me back. At 6 o'clock at night I went there and found nothing was done at all. On the top of that, they charged 10 dollars just for nothing! Three month later, same incident. Kept my car for six hours and did not even give me an estimate, let alone look at my car. The front guy is always inattentive, and indecisive. They used my own car to give me a drop off, which shows utter unprofessionalism. Fortunately, I took it to Downtown Mobil on Mich Ave, and they fixed it within 15 minutes. read more

Avoid this place. Hassle. Messed up job. Bought 4 new tires. New tire going flat 2 days later. Went back. Owner accused us of mistreating tire. But only 6 miles on the car in between! He made weird excuses. Apparently didn't have proper valve, used old one, some crazy story about sensor. Sensor still on now. 3 hours first trip. 1 1/2 hours second (unnecessary) trip for repair 2 days later. No compensation for time and aggravation. Still not sure really fixed. There are better places. I am so shocked to see any bad reviews. I have been getting oil changes and tire repairs here for that last 8 years & no matter how much I shopped the prices, they always beat them. In fact, I drove a Mercedes for a few years & this is the only place I found that wasn't trying to charge me $80-$150 for an oil change. They're knowledgable in regards to lease returns and what tires dealerships will accept back instead of just trying to make the sale and letting people get penalized at lease turn in. I just had an excellent experience with University Auto. First, I went to Ferndale Honda and got an estimate for $1,980 (compressor and clutch/belt, ELD sensor, and O2 sensor, maybe some fluids too; parts, labor, and tax included). For the exact same repair, parts, labor, and tax, included (possibly not Honda certified parts or something - i don't know), University gives me an estimate over the phone for only 950. I can't believe how much cheaper this. So, to make sure they're not low-balling me and to ensure there's no miscommunication, University is totally amenable to my sending a faxed diagnostic work up from Ferndale Honda to make sure we're on the same page. Sure enough, the price of 950 is confirmed, they throw in free towing from Ferndale (a 20-25 min drive), pick up the car that day (it's already late in the day), and the repairs are complete by the end of the next day (a Saturday). I just got my car back but, thus far, car sounds/feels great and I saved a grand. University did the exact same repair for HALF THE PRICE. The guy on the phone was happy to walk me through pricing, understood that I had a limited budget, and clearly discriminated between necessary repairs and non-urgent issues. Very patient. Very pleasant. No hard sell at all. Again. Excellent experience. No complaints. They are definitely going to be my first stop next time the car needs work. read more

I had a horrible experience with this mechanic. I took my car for new brake pad instillation and left with my tires making scary clicking sounds that the mechanic explained was because the brakes were new and need a few days to adjust. After a few days and no adjustment has taken place, plus I'm still driving on this loud clicking tire, I return only to be told that it was my fault and they told me I needed things that were never mentioned. They were extremely rude upon my arrival and seemed very insistent on blaming me and running me out with rudeness. they do not respond to logic, they are liars, cheaters, and reinforce the stereotype of the untrustworthy, out to get you mechanic. I would recommend to everyone even considering this mechanic shop to find any other place in Detroit, it will save you a big headache and you will get better work and service literally anywhere else. read more

I don't know what the other reviewers are talking about I went there and the service was fast, friendly, and cheap.

I have had the worse experience with this repair shop. I purchased a used tire and I literally went from the shop to home which is about 1.5 miles. I leave out the next morning and the tire is low. I take it back to the shop and they did not have another tire to fit. The guy does something and inflates it. He assured me I should have no more problems. Today 9/21/16 the tire is completely flat. I called the shop and asked if they could please come put my spare back on and refund my money. They first tried to spin me with the owner is not there. After they u set stood my anger. Sam calls me and says bring the tire to them, really!!!! I do not have money to pay for extra tows to fix someone else's error. I bought a used tire in good faith, which should ha e lasted at least a day, and it didn't! Fairness is not part of their business practices. This is not over I refuse to allow these business owner that benefit from the community to treat us with disrespect. read more

Please Beware!!!! I'm going to start by saying that this is one of the worst experiences I've every had in dealing with an auto care shop. I had my 2008 GMC Yukon repaired at the shop and they stole my driver side mirror off my truck and damaged my truck and paint job in order to make it look as if someone tried to steal my truck after the manager (YaYa) reassured me that my truck would be stored in the security of his locked and secured lot and that he would not even charge me a storge fee. . When conforted about the damage I was told I was a lier, and that the tow truck driver must have did the damage. After two hours of going back and forward with the manager(YaYa) I asked to see the survillence cameras and of course they declined. But then they changed their mind and said that they would repair my truck. When I took it back for them to repair my mirror. They tried to replaced my mirror with another stolen part that does not fit my truck and the electrical componets no longer worked. When I brought this to the managers(YaYa) attention I was told to get off the property. read more

University is a one stop shop for auto repair Im a student at Wayne state and on way to school I notice that every time I apply the brakes it was a grinding sound. Good thing it was 25mins before I had to be at class so I seen the shop on Cass & stopped in wtithin 5mins they where able to gef my car in & inspect it truns out I needed brakes & rotors all the way around and a inner & outer rod on the left for the steering but they said it would take abt three hours it was bad so I had to leave it they even gave me a ride to the school after I came back after class the was ready & riding perfect thanks university auto right on time!!!! read more
