This shop is truly the best in Boulder - Amazing service and great people! I came in after being discouraged by the service at another bike shop in town and they immediately made it all better by giving me a custom tune up at a fair price. They fit me for a new mountain bike and when I ended up buying a used one, instead, they were super happy for me and helped me get it all set up, even on a slammed weekend. I've been back a couple times since and David in the service department has been nothing short of kind, helpful, and honest when it comes to picking out gear for a pretty new biker - he even remembers my name! I walked in to University Bicycles looking for a bike for my six mile commute to school. I told them I was looking for something comfortable that would get me three miles there and three miles back daily. The staff was really respectful of my ignorance of the bike world and walked me through the necessary steps to finding the perfect bike in my price range. Ben, (the sales rep who helped me) asked me a lot of questions and made me feel comfortable with taking my time and thinking over my options. He helped me hand pick a new lock, rack, light, helmet, and leash. He spent well over an hour with me and had no problem giving me his full attention. This store is well staffed and seemed totally capable of tending to all the the customers without making you feel like they were too busy to help you. I had visited a few other bike shops around town and it was a no brainer that this store deserved my business. I walked out feeling like I got a steal of a deal and that I have exactly what I need. This is such a great bike shop! We have bought three bikes from them and, even though it's out of our way in Boulder, we always make the trek up there for our cycling needs. The workers have always been extremely attentive and knowledgeable about their inventory. I've never gotten the hard sell from them. In fact, they have always encouraged me to price shop. As a smaller woman who is often condescended to in sports stores, I was pleasantly surprised that the salespeople here did not talk down to me or treat me like a novice rider (because I am not). I called around Longmont and spoke to some people about giving my bike a tune up. Bringing in on Saturday would result in me getting it Tuesday or Wednesday at the places I called with the cheap end being $60 dollars up to $100. My husband insisted that I call University Bicycles. They got me in and out in less than two hours for $30. Excellent service and a great price! read more

This is still my favorite bike shop in town for the ole bike store experience. Sales people are friendly and knowledgeable, and they still give me free tune-ups yearly for the Trek mountain bike I bought here four years ago. However, do not be fooled. Their accessories are mind-numbingly overpriced. Take today. I take my bike in for aforementioned yearly free tune-up. I am told it will be 10 minutes, so I wander around the store for the joy of it. I am arrested by the bike baskets, because I have a secret fantasy of taking my dog around with me everywhere I go on my bike and now I have it in my head that it is finally the time to make this dream a reality. So, I spend many minutes perusing the baskets, envisioning my dog in each, and a salesperson mentions that if I buy it here they will gladly install it for me. So, I start to think maybe the extra cost might be worth it in avoiding the hassle, I go home, I bring my dog, I set her up in all the different baskets. I'm deep in thought again. I finally decide to purchase, but now I find out, the salesperson told me the wrong rack and the right one is more expensive. Oh and just before we ring up, the cashier confirms that the install is not in fact free. Now, I balk. Over $100 for a basket for my dog? The haze clears and I firmly and clearly say.. No! I will not be bamboozled! And after an hour of my day, I leave, log onto amazon and buy the exact same set up for $57.80. To be clear, the amazon discount was only about $5 off and the rest was University Bicycles mark-up. A mark-up of about 30% over manufacture retail price! Beware. read more

Walked off the street with my broken bicycle (brakes) expecting nothing, but they fixed my bike up real nice in like 10 minutes! My bike is reallyyyy old (read: crappy) and most shops don't even want to bother with it for fear of breaking it, and instead they try to hard sell me on a new bike. Not here! They were honest about how I could probably use a new bike sooner than later, but they still fixed my baby up good enough for now. read more

Got some great Trek stuff on sale that was full price at the Trek store. Was fun spending money there too which is dangerous lol. But let the good times roll and you will love this place. I was really impressed with the level of customer service here. Actually, shocked. Our family went in on a Sunday to find a pink bike for me (the mom) -- the place was full but we were very well taken care of by staff. They helped me figure out exactly what I wanted, and when we realized that bike doesn't exist, they were able to piece together a bike for me which fit my needs. There was no hard (or soft) sell -- they really were trying to help me get a bike which *I* wanted. I was really impressed! Really great. I was out for the weekend to see some friends and enjoy some riding in decent weather (60s in Boulder, snow in Brooklyn? Boulder please!) and instead of packing up my bike, I rented from UBikes. What a great experience! My bike was in perfect shape, they happily tried me on a different model when the first one wasn't quite right for me, and they provided all the extras (helmet, your choice of pedal, a lock, water bottle cages, repair kit). I ended up picking up a jersey and knee warmers while I was there too since it was spring sale time. Can't wait to come back and rent again soon! read more

Andy, their Cannondale expert, helped me with a rear shock issue in August. The shock had to get sent to Sram for testing and it was fully rebuilt under warranty. Andy was awesome, communicating via email including Google Docs. I wish more businesses did this for their customer service, especially since it's so easy and better for all involved. University has always given me excellent advice in a friendly, no-pressure manner. Their kids selection is great, particularly their inventory of Specialized bikes, and their trade-in program helps a lot when you're purchasing two bikes at a time. read more

I do not have a lot of experience with bike shops, but I have been to some awful ones and University Bicycles stands out on top. As soon as you walk in there, are 1 to 2 greeters to point you in the direction that you need. It seems that all the staff are knowledgeable and even know how to run the register so you don't have to wait around to pay. I built my own bike and any question or part that I needed I was able to find at University Bicycle without any issue at all. I recently had my front fork rebuilt with them and it was done and as good as new under 4 hours. They are fast, knowledgeable, and friendly. I great place to meet other bikers of any kind, get work done properly, and find what ever path or trails you are looking for. read more

U-Bikes is legendary in Boulder when it comes to bike shops. They easily have the best selection of bikes in town. Pretty much any type of bike you could possibly want from a cruiser to a high end time trial bike and everything in between. The clothing selection is pretty good, but the last time I was in I noticed a lot of the selection seems to stay the same from one year to the next. It doesn't seem like their clothing buyer is too creative these days. Still they have enough that I'm sure you'll find something you'll like. The staff seems to be very well trained. They are generally pretty knowledgeable and there are always more than enough of them that you can get help quickly unless it's a busy weekend. Occasionally the store gets to be so busy that it becomes uncomfortable to be in there. I have noticed in the past few years that they have a lot of turnover so if you're looking for a place to go where they will remember your name this may not be the place for you. The amount of traffic through the store probably doesn't help in that dept. either. They have A LOT of customers so unless you're in there all the time don't expect personal service. If you're looking for a bike U-Bikes is worth the trip. There are a lot of other good options in Boulder, but I consider U-Bikes close to the top. read more

University Bicycles is at the west end of Pearl Street Mall. The staff is wonderful, full of helpful information. We were from out of town and wanted to get in a good day of riding. The bike rental selection was very good. They set the bikes up properly for us and gave us a map with a safe route to bike. Even recommended some local restaurants for dinner that were great. I've been to UBikes a couple of times and the staff is always friendly, but more importantly, they get things done fast and at a good rate. The last time I was in there, I asked for a tune up, but they suggested their free once-over and then if they find anything wrong, they tell you and will fix it. They checked it out for free, found one thing wrong, and fixed it for $13. This time when I went, the intertubes on my bike had exploded and they fixed it and got it back to me in a half-hour quoting me $24 for the tubes and labor. The only thing that went wrong was that it ended up being $31 not $24. But hey, that's fine! Fast, friendly money-saving service comes first. read more

After bringing my bike in for a malfunctioning component (expecting coverage through the parts warranty), I was charged $50 a week later for a tune-up with no prior explanation or projection of cost. I followed up with the management via email in order to get an explanation as to why I wasn't called first and how I was specifically billed for the $50. In the response from management, I received no explanation as to the break-down of the charge, was given no reason as to why I wasn't called first, and was told that the shop would never work on my bike again. Fortunately, the charge was dropped. When I picked up my bike I asked why it was their stance to refuse to work on the bike again and received the response "it doesn't matter." Equally as disappointing is the fact that the part is still malfunctioning. I do think that University Bikes has some of the best mechanics in town, however it seems like they receive enough business that they can afford to lose any customer who isn't on board with their pricing or customer service. *** update as of 08/05/14 *** Though I exhaustively explained the issues I was experiencing multiple times through the ^above situation, University Bicycles stubbornly maintained that the part was completely fine and insultingly offered me tips on how to shift the bike properly. Because the component was *still malfunctioning* after University Bicycles claimed for a second time to have corrected the issue, I followed up with Shimano, who issued a FULL REPLACEMENT at NO COST. read more

I'll preface this by saying that this review focuses only on the service department - I haven't had much experience with their sales, but have loyally taken my road bikes only to ubikes for service for a couple of years now. Generally, the service has been timely and satisfactory (if a bit pricey). It seemed like the mechanics were getting to know me and my bike, and I even gave one of the mechs a spare saddle (a nice Selle Italia saddle, for free) hoping that the favor would some day be returned. Apparently no good deed goes unpunished, as I've yet to receive any kind of discounted service or benefit in return. I recently upgraded some drivetrain parts and was able to do most of the install myself, but I took the bike in to have the cassette and chain swapped out as I didn't have the necessary tools. When I went in to pick it up, I was told that my new front derailleur was simply not compatible with my crank (I researched this extensively before purchasing the parts and every online resource claims they work fine). I was also told that my cable housings were too short, despite the fact that I've always had the same cable housings on my bike and they've never been too short. Mysteriously my handlebars now have half the range of motion they had when I brought the bike in, though the shop claims they didn't touch them. However, they were happy to sell me a new cable housing kit for $20. I took the bike home for lunch, pulled up a YouTube video, and was able to install and adjust my new front derailleur within 20 minutes, and it works perfectly. I rode the bike back into the shop just to chat with the mechanic and clear up the issue with no ill intent whatsoever, but was met with a pretty salty attitude from whomever was managing the service dept. I was surprised, given I'd just forked over almost $55 for a cassette install and a job I had to fix myself. It's really a shame, as I live close by and consider it my 'home' shop for all of my cycling needs, but it looks like I'll be taking my business elsewhere. read more

I'm a recreational cyclist and needed a long laundry list of items fixed and replaced on my carbon road bike. I do quite a bit of riding, and a bit of wrenching myself, so I can tell if something isn't done right. In this case, the repairs ranged from complicated to simple, and there was just a lot of them. I expected at least one item to be forgotten or messed up... but thankfully nope! After 500km it's clear everything was done with a lot of care and attention to detail. At first I liked the shop the bike I rented was nice but when I went back the guy pissed me off and Out the door I said fuck this place im a yelp reviewer and I guess I hurt the workers feelings. He claimed I called him a cocksucker or dbag.The front break pad fell out of the demo my friend rented and when we went back to drop off the bikes they told us there was no way that could happen and that we did something to it then charged us almost 300 dollars for a whole new break system besides the lever. The manager is soft and needs to run it more like a business then a therapy session about feelings considering he made me wait out side I would definitely recommend full cycle only a few blocks away they have better service and a restaurant. EXCELLENT AMAZING POLIET SERVICE I've been bike shopping for 6 months now. I have an old, beatup 2008 Fuji Mountain bike, which I love to death, but was looking for something lighter to carry up 5 flights of stairs. I've stopped into pretty much every bike shop in Boulder and Longmont while trying to find a shop I trusted. I always tell them I'm browsing, and a shop's reaction to that is very telling. Most shops decided to ignore me completely, not offering any help, or tried to push me into buying a bike. University Cycle did none of those things. All the employees and techs were very friendly and helpful, and never once pushed me into purchasing. Despite playing dumb, I knew exactly which bike style and brand I wanted, and proceeded to purchase it that same trip. I needed new lights because mine were burnt out and not worth replacing the bulbs. I was shown a variety of options, and was encouraged to go with the second cheapest one they had in stock, as opposed to the upselling shops usually try. They were all kind and patient, and recommended different shops that can better care for my old, standard bike. I'm not a biking pro, but I do spend about 6-10 hours a week biking. Being a broke college kid, I didn't want (or need) a $3000 top of the line bike, I wanted a quality midrange bike that would better fit my commuting needs. I will reccommend anyone UB for advice, tune ups, and honest salesmen. read more

I'm new to mountain biking (and, really, biking generally) and my first bike (which my boyfriend found for me just to try it and see if I liked it) was great fun to ride, but making me very uncomfortable in the... seat area. I called UB to ask if they do fittings or anything where I could get some pro advice on whether my seat was right for me, my bike was the right size, etc. They said to just come in anytime and speak with a tech. So I did that. They were a bit busy on a Saturday afternoon, so it was about a thirty minute wait, but I got to speak with a woman tech and she was great, talking with me for quite some time about my experience and what I wanted to make better, checking my bike's size for me, measuring my sit bones, then recommending a new (wider) seat. They have a 30-day return policy on seats, so it was commitment-free to try the one she recommended. I've been riding it for a couple of weeks now and it is working out great. I no longer think about my seat during a ride (or after) and don't constantly shift around trying to find a comfortable position. The attitude of everyone I encountered in the story was friendly, helpful, and non-pretentious. Don't be afraid to go to UB and ask questions, even if you're a really inexperienced newbie like me! read more

I was a first time buyer at this store but the reviews were so good I decided to try it. I was impressed with the sales people's knowledge and friendliness. I was purchasing a bike for my husbands birthday (Sunday) and wanted a bike in 3-4 days and was told it would be in by the time needed as it was "in transit". I felt at the end of the sale the communication shifted to "it will most likely be here by Sunday" it was Thursday -so I started calling Friday, Saturday, then Sunday- each time I got the feeling it wasn't going to be in and was told something different. One manager explained that the salespeople are not suppose to promise a bike in, that they are suppose to give a 7-10 day window and was apologetic and said he would talk to the salespeople. While I appreciated the apology, had I know this, I would have gone elsewhere. I guess I expected more, like a discount for my troubles or a bike to offer my husband to use in the meantime, something. This was not the case and when I called to cancel my order on Sunday, there was a half apology, but certainly didn't feel met by the manager. I guess I expect more service. I went to another bike shop down the street, where I got my sons bike as well and got a better quality bike for less money. I had bought a specialized stump jumper at University Bicycle and found out their suspension is outdated (13 years old) and instead found a Kona Process 157 at the new store for close to the same price, $3000 and am much happier. read more

I'm in the market of buying a new road bike. So I thought if I rent and pay $100 to demo a bike for 24hrs, they will set up the bike like you want it. I gave them my fit number: saddle height, saddle setback, handle bar drop and handle bar reach. I ended getting the bike that was set up 6 cm above the saddle. So, now the handle bar position was in a whooping 7.5 cm from what my typical set up is!! Not only I rode the bike like a sail of a boat, but also I ended up getting my back hurt. As a result, I can't ride too long to get the benefit of renting it. The reason I rented in the first place, so I can get the set up I want, Then I can eliminate the fit issue and being able to get the feel of the bike to make an educated decision which bike I want to buy. Now, I ended up fighting with the fit issue all ride long because I was so uncomfortable on the bike. I can understand they aren't willing to do it if I only test drive bike. But, I paid 100 bucks!!! The guy claimed that that number is a set up from my old bike and every bike is different. Well, that is my fit number for God shake. To make matter worst, the frame reach and the frame stack of the demo bike and my old bike are practically almost the same!! (difference of 1-5mm). That's no brainer in my opinion. They could have taken the spacer out and put the stem to negative angle or something. That, at least, will get the handle bar position close enough to what I'm used to ride. So not only I'm very, very disappointed with my experience, but I also have a sore back (which makes me even annoyed). I felt like I was cheated and I have wasted my money just to get a lousy service. I don't know maybe they saw me and I don't look like a racer or pro cyclist, then I'm somewhat totally clueless about bike. One of my criteria to buy a new bike is also to review how the stores service you as a customer (since I hate the store where I bought my old bike). How far they are willing to go above and beyond to satisfy you (especially since I paid). So if I end up buying the bike from them, I know I will be taken care off. That's what I called "great customer service". After this experience, I don't think I ever step foot again in this store. I will find other stores who will let me demo the bike and willing to set it up the way I want it. Hey, I could have just adjusted myself, but the point is I paid 100 bucks and I gave the number to follow!! So I expected to get at least close enough. I didn't ask them to change the stem, just get the position of my handle bar in relation to the seat close enough. (above the saddle set up and bellow the saddle request are hardly close enough!) Is this such a difficult ask to do for a bike shop?? Hello. If I knew that I will get that kind of set up, I might as well just test drive it and not paying a dime! And please don't give me a crap about every bike is different. I have done my research and there's reason why I have gone through bike fit before I buy it. And there's a reason, why I only test drive/demo certain bike and ask for specific size I want because I've already known that's the best bike geometry for my fit number. Sure there's going to be some additional thing to change or tune once the bike is purchased (like swap crank length, handle bar length, stem length and angle), but setting up a handle bar above or below the saddle should be no brainer!!! especially when you rent and paid for it. 6 cm above the seat? That's not minor discrepancy if you're used to ride with handle bar below the seat. Is that too much to ask?? UPDATE 3/16/15 After I wrote my review the night before, I returned the bike the next morning. I was in no mood of complaining whatsoever. I planed to just return the bike, that's it. (I think my review say it enough) To my surprise, the store has read my review, and they recognized me as the reviewer. The manager of the store came to talk to me and offered me to reimburse the rental fee. I thought that was a nice gesture and I really appreciate it. read more

We had been to another bike shop where the salesperson was trying to sell my wife a bike that my wife said just didn't feel quite right. The salesperson insisted that the saddle and stem could be adjusted so that it would feel better. When we went to University Bikes, our salesperson immediately told her that the other bike was the wrong size for her just by looking at her. I have been a frequent visitor to this shop since I moved here three years ago. My purchases have mainli limited to clothes and accessories. The service has always been super, friendly and knowledgable. The mainly young staff really know their stuff. I am sorry I never purchased a bike here since I am not happy with the shop where I bought my most recent bike. Unfortunately, UBikes does not carry the brand I was interested in. I needed some changes done to my bike, fitting etc. the bike shop where I bought it told me they could not do it and in fact would ruin the geometry! Another local shop wanted to do a full, complete fitting first. I didn't feel I needed a complete analysis. UBikes has several options to choose from so I scheduled one I needed and went from there. The "fitter" knew his stuff, is certified and very helpful while being extremely personable. I got the adjustments I needed, new stem, and the bike runs great.
